Watching the World Cup and it got me wondering why football referees and linesmen (& women) wear long socks? I’m guessing why footballers wear them is to cover and keep in place shin pads. Obviously officials don’t wear shin pads. Also I’ve never understood why referees and especially linesmen do not wear baseball caps. I’m 37M, married 11 years, one kid (8). We both work full time. I’ve always thought I was a pretty involved husband and dad. I cook 2 or 3 nights a week, I do dishes most nights, I handle bedtime on Tue/Thu/Sat, I vacuum, I’ll run loads of laundry and fold while watching a show. If she asks me to do something, I do it. That’s why this fight hit me like a brick. She told me she feels like she’s “managing a household with an assistant,” not living with a partner. She said even when I do chores, she still has to be the one thinking about them, and that’s what is exhausting her. Her examples made me defensive at first, because some of it sounds small, but the more I listened the more I realized I genuinely don’t see half of it. Stuff like, she’s the one who knows when our kid is almost out of socks in his drawer, who notices he’s outgrown his sneakers, who remembers the school spirit day, who keeps track of when the dentist sends a reminder, who packs the bag for soccer, who knows we’re low on shampoo before it’s an emergency. She’s the one answering the school emails, signing forms, planning meals so we don’t end up eating cereal, texting my parents back, scheduling playdates. I do some of those things if I’m told, but I almost never initiate. She said she can’t relax because her brain is always running a background tab, and she resents that my “free time” is actual free time. I felt called out, and also kind of stupid because I don’t want her to feel alone in this. At the same time, I’m worried this turns into her assigning me tasks like I’m a teenager, which she also hates. I asked her what she wants and she said, “I want you to own things from start to finish, without me tracking you.” Fair. But I don’t know how to build that in a way that sticks. I’ve tried reminders on my phone and it works for a week then I forget, or I do the thing but miss the next step (like I’ll buy groceries but not notice we’re out of lunch stuff for the kid). She said she doesn’t want a chore chart, but also wants consistency. I want a system that doesn’t feel like she’s my manager and doesn’t make me feel like I’m doing chores for praise. People who fixed this, what actually helped? Shared calendar? Weekly sit down? A list of areas each person fully owns? I’m not looking to win the argument, I’m trying to stop her from burning out and stop us from drifting into roommate mode. I hated how my grandma basically had to raise me. When I would ask her about my mother, my grandma painted a picture of a bitter, spiteful, hateful spoiled/ entitled woman. I felt very justified in my anger and hate for her. That's what my family told me and I had absolutely no reason to doubt them. A few weeks ago I found her on social media while at my boyfriend's house. And I was so.fucking.mad.She was out there living her best life. She is a cook ( chef?) in a Michelin star restaurant. She travels, has a huge apartment, and apparently is married to a gorgeous man. In a fit of rage, I DM'd her cruising her out for abandoning me to live her frivolous life and that karma would come to her. She obviously saw it. Instead of going off on me she just asked me to meet her and that she felt like I had a right to express my anger to her in person and that she owed me as much.I was starstruck because my father said she never stood for the consequences of her actions. Without telling anyone I agreed. She invited me to this amazing restaurant. She paid an Uber for me and everything. It was very awkward at the beginning. I kept berating her. I was so angry. I cried a little. She just sat there and took it all in. I then asked her...why she abandoned me.She then asked ( this is all paraphrased) " Do you really want to know the whole story? It is not nice and you will not like it. I am ready to be the bad guy in your head forever and keep my distance."I just kept pressing her. And then she told me the real story. This is again paraphrased and to my best recollection. She told me that my father and she met shortly before ending Uni. At that time my mother had said she did not want to stay in uni town.A few months after dating my father told her, that his landlord was evicting him because the apartment was needed for immediate family use. She offered him to stay while he found something else. Moths passed and he was not doing anything. Then she got a job offer in another country. She told my father, that he could take over her apartment or come with her. They had this huge fight where my mother told him that she was not ready for the type of commitment he wanted. She wanted different things in life than him and that as much as she loved him...that they weren't compatible.They stayed living together and then one day she found out she was pregnant. She told me honestly, that she was thinking of not having me. She did not feel ready to be a mom at 22. She did not feel maternal feelings. She said she was already struggling with depression and late-diagnosed ADHD. My father convinced her to have me. He said he would take me because he had a right to me. That he would go after her because that baby was also his. So she had me.She said that the time after birth was really bad. My father was dragging out the legal procedures, he refused to vacate the home. My mother said that while she felt love for me and that there were moments when she felt overjoyed, it was overshadowed by huge waves of suicidal ideation. She was scared that she was gonna hurt me. She also showed me some of the court documents of that time that backed up her claims. In the end, she was so desperate that she agreed to stay with my father if he agreed to be the main caretaker. He did but only half-assed. My mother then told me that it got so bad, that she tried to commit suicide around my second birthday after a particularly nasty fight where my father admitted to having tampered with her birth control. She showed me the papers of the involuntary 72 hours commitment and the legal documents where she was found unfit to be a parent afterwardI felt nauseous after all that. I would have not believed her, hadn't she brought so much "evidence" with her. She then asked me what I meant in my message that we were struggling.I told her that we were not exactly rich and that I was struggling to come up with the money to go to University in another city. She was bewildered and asked me what my father had been doing with the monthly payments she was making. I told her that we don't receive that money. Then she took out another stack of papers. .... Guys.... she is sending child support every month. It is almost 3k every. month.Edit: She is court-mandated to pay me 1.5k. She doubled the payments out of her own will. She doesn't have to pay that amount. She wants to She was very concerned about this and told me she would talk to her lawyers ASAP to transfer the money to me directly.In the end, she apologized to me. She is very sorry to have put me through this. She was very sorry for not being stronger and she was very sorry for letting me grow up the way I did. She was crying... I was crying. She then told me to take my time. She would contact me again regarding the payments and that it was up to me if I wanted to see her again. I boxed up my food and she got me another uber home.At home, my father was not there. So I went straight to bed and left early the next morning and am staying with my boyfriend. My(m18)life keeps crumbling. 12 July 2022 I have found out that my mother never really abandoned me because she didn`t want me, but because she tried to commit suicide and was deemed unfit to parent and that my father basically baby trapped my mother with me. After the post yesterday, I went snooping even more because I do not trust my father anymore.I found records of domestic abuse perpetrated by my father toward my mother. He was charged but never ended up going to jail or did a very reduced sentence. This would have been when I was 2 after my mother was committed. I also found a Restraining Order filed by my mother against my father.It was so much worse than what she said. He did not only abuse her emotionally but also physically. I am feeling so disgusted. So on Thursday, I am officially leaving for 2 weeks and I pray things to get resolved beforehand. I am taking all important stuff with me already in case things go south fast. Anyways. This is my first story here (please be gentle) Also, this story is more about the kid than the parent, but the parent was supporting the behavior so... ​ Our cast: EK: obvious. EM: obvious. Me: super obvious. Neighbors 1 and 2: 2 neighborhood kids (note that the neighbors are actually pretty cool, the EK was just older than them and so had some authority). ​ And so it begins ​ One summer day last year, (I had just turned 14), I was playing some basketball with these two kids from my neighborhood in their driveway, they're family is pretty rich, so they have a fully paved "driveway" big enough to be a sizable court. It's just me and them for about half an hour, until satan's son himself came over from down the street, this kid is the really stereotypical little shit who made the select soccer team 3 years ago and still thinks that he runs the place. ​ So we let him join the game and everything is fine for a bit. I'm a little bit on the ahem "bigger side" but I'm really strong, so I play really well as a Center, posting up and that. And the EK is guarding me and he's getting worked. He's shorter and not as strong so he's getting dominated. ​ Here's the major incident. ​ I've just grabbed a loose ball and I'm running back towards the basket, the other kid gets back before me and stops my drive, so I start to back him down again. He must have just been really frustrated by him not getting a chance on defense so he thinks up a plan. At this point I was wearing a hoodie and the fucker grabs my hood from behind and pulls as hard as he can ​ I, not expecting my airflow to be cut off, especially while I'm breathing hard, start to panic. I can't shake him off of my back. I don't know how long he's hanging on, but It felt like a whole 45 seconds, that may not seem like that long, but I'm freaking the fuck out, so it feels like forever. ​ An eternity later, his grip loosens and I finally get him off, I'm fuckin fired up so I punch him right in the nose, definitely not as hard as I could, but it certainly would have hurt a lot. This little shit, however, he drops like he's out cold, meanwhile I'm on my knees trying to get my breath back. He's bawling his eyes out, he's rolling and screaming and all that, being the melodramatic turd that he is, but his mom is running over, and it was that moment where I knew I was fucked ​ Now, sometime between when he started and when I socked him, his mother came out, but she's the typical "I want to speak to the manager" white upper-middle class mom who volunteers to be the head of the PTA every year and goes to starbucks 20 times a day, and the EK is very much her son ​ EM: OH MY GOD (redacted) ARE YOU OK, WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM Me: He just nearly choked me out so I punched him EM: WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, YOU'RE SO MUCH BIGGER THAN HIM!!!! Me: But he was chocking me out! EM: Come on dude, you've got to be more mature about this! Me: What do you expect me to do?, apologize to HIM for making him choke me? ​ This whole thing goes on for a while until the neighbors step in to try to protect me ​ N1: OP really didn't do anything wrong N2: Yeah, he didn't even hit him that hard EM: But OP shouldn't be hitting people in the first place. Especially not my son (yes, she actually said especially not my son) N2: But it was basically a trade off, he... EM: Why are you guys trying to protect him, you should probably go inside, you don't know what you're talking about ​ They keep trying to help me out, but to no avail This just goes around for another 5 minutes before EK finally gets up and LIMPS, yes, LIMPS back to his house I go home cuz I'm sick of this shit and I'm tired. ​ The next day, I try go back over, but the EK is there already, neither of his parents cars are there so I assume that he's staying at the neighbor kids' house until they come back, I decide to go back inside because I don't want to interact with him. ​ A couple hours later, EK shows up at our door with his mom standing at gate of our fence. EK: Um, Hi OP, I was just coming over to say sorry for choking you yesterday, I won't ever do it again Me: Uhhh, Ok, thanks, I'm sorry that I punched you At this point, my mom comes to see who I'm talking to and she asks what's going on EM pipes up and says... EM: We are here for your forgiveness gift Me: My what? EM: Your forgiveness gift, it's a tradition in our family that the person who apologizes last has to give the other person something to make up for it My Mom: Excuse me? What's going on? ​ I explain what happened and as I explain what happened, she seems to get more and more disgusted by the situation ​ I finish explaining and turn back to EK who had tried to "correct" my story while I was explaining it to my mom, saying things like, "He punched me twice in the face, and then kicked me in the nuts while I was crying on the ground" My mom is basically a bomb sniffing dog for lies, so I can see from her face that she knows that's bullshit. ​ I turn back to EK ​ My mom: I'm sorry but we don't do forgiveness gifts in this family EM: We do in this one, EK, pick something out, ​ EK looked around and saw my PS4, and he points at it EK: Mommy, I want that (Keep in mind that this kid is just about a year younger than I am, too old for mommy, too old for this whole situation in my opinion) EM walks up to our door and sees it's my PS4 EM: Great, We'll take that as our gift ​ My mom, with steam billowing out of her ears, slams the door in their faces and quickly locks it. They start pounding on the door so hard that it sounds like they are trying to break it down.
