I now use a pixel 8 (RIP my pixel 5, best phone ever) everyday and when I'm in the back country. My other electronics are: Garmin Instinct 2X Solar Nitecore NU25 headlamp Garmin inreach mini 2 This is my setup for indefinite travel and trekking, with a max of 5 days between resupplies. The reason I've ditched the powerbank is that I've found that by putting my phone on ultra battery saver, turning it off at night, and using airplane mode, I can easily extend the life to 5-7 days even while taking photos and videos regularly. There are multiple reasons I can do this: My watch has navigation built in. I send the route to it before the hike, then forget about it. My watch charges through solar - I record my whole day of hiking, 10-14 hours, and still only use maybe 15-20% per day, much less if it's sunny. In an emergency I can stop recording and only use my watch for navigation, thus extending the battery greatly, or use my inreach. My headlamp and watch can be charged by my phone. The headlamp battery is 650mah, the watch is maybe 300mah so 25% phone battery to charge both from dead. I've never killed either on a 5-day section, but if I had to the option is there. I'm currently wrapping up a month in Patagonia, and I brought a 10kmah powerbank out of anxiety about the back-country section I'd be doing on unofficial trails. Never needed it, even using my phone for navigation instead of my watch. Now, before anyone jumps in here getting all high and mighty about safety: People have been walking in the woods for about, I dunno, 200k years without electronics. The best backup navigation you can ask for is a paper map and a compass (which weigh about 30g tops) and good backcountry skills. My setup has triple redundancy for navigation (phone > watch > inreach). I have a small vacant house that I only visit once awhile as a mini getaway. Since I have no one living there, I shut off all the utilities like gas, water, and electricity. However, I do want to set up ring cameras for security purpose, but then I would need internet and electricity. Monthly, I used to pay $40 for wifi and $100+ for electricity. To save on monthly electricity bills, I was thinking to get a solar panel and power bank to power up my internet wifi device. TL:DR I made an offline, off-grid, self-powered, locally-hosted AI server using Google AI Edge Gallery, with Gemma3:4b running on an XREAL Beam Pro. It’s powered by a $50 MQOUNY solar / hand crank / USB power bank. I used heavy duty 3M Velcro-like picture hanging strips to hold it all together. I’m storing it all in a Faraday Cage Bag in case of EMPs (hope those never happen). It was really more just combining some hardware and software products together. I’m not a “doomsday prepper” but I recognize the need for having access to a Local LLM in emergency off-grid situations where you have no power and no network connectivity, Maybe you need access to medical, or survival knowledge, or whatever, and perhaps a local LLM could provide relevant information. So that’s why I took on this project. That, and I just like tinkering around with fun tech stuff like this. My goal was to build a portable AI-in-a-box that: Is capable of running at least one LLM or multiple LLMs at an acceptable generation speed (preferably 2+ tk/ps) Requires absolutely no connectivity (after initial provisioning of course) Is handheld, extremely portable, and ruggedized if possible Accepts multiple power sources (Solar, hand-crank, AC/DC, etc.) and provides multiple power output types Has a camera, microphone, speaker, and touch screen for input Doesn’t require any separate cords or power adapters that aren’t already attached / included in the box itself Those were the basic requirements I made before I began my research. Originally, I wanted to do the whole thing using a Raspberry Pi device with an AI accelerator, but the more I thought about it, I realized that an android-mini tablet or a budget unlocked android phone would probably be the best and easiest option. It’s really the perfect form factor and can readily run LLMs, so why reinvent the wheel when I could just get a cheap mini android tablet (XREAL Beam Pro - see my repo for full hardware details). The second part of the solution was I wanted multiple power sources with a small form factor that closely matched the tablet / phone form factor. After a pretty exhaustive search, I found a Lithium battery power bank that had some really unique features. It had a solar panel, and a hand crank for charging, it included 3 built-in cords for power output, 2 USB types for power input, it even had a bonus flashlight, and was ruggedized and waterproof. Generators seem to be the absolute best source of energy in the game. Engines will always give 50 power each, gas is cheap and is fairly cheap to make.(especially once you hit an oil deposit) A solar bank on the other hand, is anything but. Even with max bartering, awesome sauce, the bartering candy, and enforcer glasses smoking a cig, it'll cost roughly 60-70k to get a fully set lvl6 solar bank... and what for exactly?
