I looked through the entire masterlist, but couldn’t find exactly what I needed. I just want an alt to Spotify with no ads that I can use on my phone. I know I can just download music and all that but I’ve got limited space on my phone, and I still want to just stream/search songs I listen to only occasionally. I am thinking of quiting Spotify. But doing so requires ALOT of work. I listen to alot of music and i discover alot of music through Spotify. And i have been thinking alot about it for a time now and the way i see it is this: I need to download 500-1000gb worth of music atleast. I dont have harddrive space for that. I could ditch the "discover music in Spotify" for... private radios? What type of server do you set up to access this music? Aint no way i can store that amount of music i want access to on my phone. TLDR; Over the last few months, I've been on a quest to distance myself from Spotify and other music streaming services, and now I finally feel like I can function without it. I've had Spotify for years but it's given me an icky feeling over the past year or so. I decided to finally make an effort to move away from it, which was really hard at first. They've designed themselves to fit so seamlessly into our lives. I read the book Mood Machine by Liz Pelly, which takes a deep dive into Spotify's history and impact on the industry, and I highly recommend it. She outlines how it's ruining artist livelihoods making us less engaged listeners. Of course the music industry in general is pretty disgusting, but Spotify has exacerbated its worst tendencies. Here are some of the steps I've taken so far: Notice my use of Spotify and how it makes me feel. Start using alternative apps for music and podcasts. End Spotify subscription. Buy a CD player and start building a CD collection again. Delete Spotify app from my phone. I feel so much better now that I'm rebuilding my own music library and not dependent on Spotify anymore. A future goal is to delete my account completely, but I'm keeping it for now to reference bands and albums I've enjoyed over the last 5-10 years. Posting just to see what others have experienced when it comes to reckoning with music streaming apps. Was at Spotify since the beginning. My SO was showing me this collection of covers on Spotify she’s been playing at her business. It was all AI. She was shocked and appalled to learn that. Spotify’s lackadaisical approach to AI has led me to cancel it. I find the proliferation and monetization of AI music to be morally objectionable and dystopian. I’m thinking either Deezer or Qobuz. Spotify feels built for people who don’t know exactly what they want to hear. If you’re picky about music, the free version can be frustrating since basic features like unlimited skips are locked behind a paywall. I don’t want an algorithm deciding what plays after I choose a song. Most of the time it’s either something I don’t like or something I’ve already heard before. The legal pressure on Anna’s Archive just hit a massive boiling point. Following a lawsuit filed earlier this year, a New York federal judge (Jed S. Rakoff) has entered a $322.2 million default judgment against the site. ​ ​The Plaintiffs: Spotify and the "Big Three" record labels (UMG, WMG, and Sony). ​The Damages: $300 million awarded to Spotify for "circumventing anti-piracy measures" after the site scraped 86 million tracks. ​$22.2 million awarded to the labels for statutory copyright infringement. ​ The court issued a permanent injunction requiring ISPs, registrars, and CDNs (like Cloudflare) to perpetually disable access to Anna’s Archive domains. ​ Since the operators are anonymous and didn't show up to court, they obviously aren't going to pay the $322M. And they know they’ll make a lot more money if they don’t have to pay human musicians. So they’ve leaned hard into AI slop, and they’re not going to stop. All your whining won’t change a thing. So save your money and spend it on cover and drinks at live shows, and support the real human beings who are making real human music.
