Litter box smell is going to end my relationship
UPDATE- thanks everyone for the support and cat related advice! We will be switching out their wet food and I’ll update after some time passes. We’re currently using Boxie Pro litter but will switch to tofu if it doesn’t do the trick and keep you all posted! — Seriously- my boyfriend and I moved in together four months ago, and he’s extremely sensitive to smells. He has one cat whose litter box doesn’t seem to smell, but the smell from the one my two use is unbearable for him and it’s been a major issue. We have a very small house and don’t have a place for another box Their last vet checkup was 4.5 months ago and they had no issues We scoop anywhere between 1-3 times a day We have stainless steel covered litter boxes with charcoal filters We run air purifiers 24/7 next to the box, open windows when we can, and have a fan running to increase airflow We’ve tried Arm and Hammer clump and seal, world’s best poop fighter, odour buster, and boxiecat pro litters We’ve switched foods, they get Purina one indoor advantage and a small amount of Friskies wet food (with extra water mixed in) every day, as well as Purina Fortiflora cat probiotics to try to stop the smell at the source We bought Whisko plugins that are supposed to help- they didn’t I clean the boxes, litter mats, and surrounding area with Natures Miracle about once a week We scoop into airtight bags- the smell is coming from the box, not the bags. Honestly open to any suggestions, even if they sound crazy. I’m 99% certain my girl wont use pellet litter so that isn’t an option. Litter box Problems
My cat has been peeing around the house, mostly on my couch and in my son’s play room. We have already seen a vet and they did blood and urine tests and said she’s perfectly healthy and it’s a behavioral issue. She’s 7, so not quite a senior. I did everything they said, replaced all three of her litter boxes with stainless steel to eliminate smell, put several Feliway sprayers around the house, and even changed her diet. She has not touched her new litter boxes either. Still peeing on and possibly inside the couch. I just found pee and poop all over my son’s backpack. We have a baby on the way and I’m starting to wonder if surrendering her is the best option for my family but it makes me feel like a monster because I’ve had her since she was a kitten and she’s my best friend. If anyone has any ideas on how to help us. I have another appointment with the vet scheduled but unfortunately they can’t see us for another week and I’m hoping someone can help until then. Cats all use the same litter box
We have 4 cats. We have 4 litter boxes. They are all in our mud room due to a lack of space. I know you are supposed to have 5, so maybe that’s the problem? I’ve noticed that they favor the one plastic box we have, the other 3 are stainless steel. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it either. The litter is all the same, we scoop them the same frequency, and I even tried switching the boxes around to see if it was a location thing, they still prefer that plastic box. Why??? submitted by /u/imbxx to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Has switching from plastic to stainless steel actually reduced odor long term?
I’ve seen a lot of people say plastic litter boxes start holding onto odor over time, even when cleaned regularly. For those who actually switched to stainless steel — did you notice a real long-term difference in room smell? Or was it mostly the same? Also curious whether: • Covered vs uncovered mattered more • Cleaning frequency made a bigger difference • Multi-cat vs single cat changed results Just trying to understand what actually moves the needle before I replace my current setup. submitted by /u/yoptimized to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Anyone use a stainless steel litter box?
Right now I'm using plastic high sided litter boxes for my 2 11yo cats and they have to be replaced about every 6 months because they absorb odors which then stink up the house even though the box is cleaned out every time I change the litter. I use the wood pellets so while I can scoop the poop right away the pellets dissolve into sawdust when they get wet with urine which then goes to the bottom right next to the plastic which does absorb odor unfortunately. So pellets while extremely cheap are nothing like clumping cat litter that let you just quickly remove the urine. Regular cat litter sets off my asthma and my cats refuse to use it since they've used the pellets their entire lives. Last night I discovered stainless steel litter boxes and I'm wondering are they worth the cost? Do they actually last for years and not absorb odors? My cats usually live till around age 20 before passing so I have quite a few years to go with the current set and I'm on a fixed income so I'm always trying to cut cost where I can. Is this one of those worth it purchases? submitted by /u/FreakingBored123456 to r/BuyItForLife [link] [comments]

Stainless Steel Litter Boxes for High Peers
our boy raises his butt as he pees. we've kept him from overshooting the litter box by using 20" deep Rubbermaid totes, but i'm seeking a better alternative. the issues with the plastic tote is that it absorbs odors and that it's bottom and sides have contours to make them more rigid, which makes it a pain to scoop. i've looked for years and haven't seen any stainless steel options that meet the height requirement. (top entry / enclosed litter boxes are not recommended for various reasons and we've tried that) PTLOM makes something close to what we need, but even their "High-Sided XL" box is only 13.7" tall... i've even been in discussion with the company and others wanting taller boxes, and they said they were working on a taller option... but it's been more than a year. i'm seriously considering having a local metal shop fabricate litter boxes to spec from 1/8" SS. anyone else out there at their wits end and built something similar? submitted by /u/triumphofthecommons to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Stainless Steel Sifting Litter Box Hack
I have been wanting to switch to a sifting litter box because me and my cats have a strong preference for wood pellet litter. Since I was making a new purchase I wanted to make the change from plastic to stainless steel. Unfortunately stainless steel sifting litter boxes are SO expensive ($100+ with mediocre reviews) and there weren't a lot of models available near me. I researched some DIY options and almost just gave up and went with a plastic PeeWee. But I couldn't stomach the price tag for another plastic box that would end up smelling. -->I took a risk and got two stainless steel hotel food trays, the same size but different depths so they could nest and allow a chamber for the disintegrated pellets to fall into. Its working PERFECTLY, the holes are the right size, the walls are a great height for my cats that like to dig, and the dimensions accommodate my 12 llb cats just fine. Im leaving it open for now while they get used to it, the smell is neutral, and I can easily create a bin cover when i want to. Highlyy recommend this hack.. ('Stainless steel Gastronorm container 1/1 size 200 mm deep' and a 'perforated gastronorm 1/1 size 150 mm deep') total cost about $50 submitted by /u/Chipmunkpunk98 to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Is a sifting stainless box actually worth it for multi-cat homes?
I’ve got 3 chaos goblins (2 boys, 1 girl) and I’m LOSING the litter war. I’m scooping twice a day, still getting mystery pee clumps stuck to the corners, and my apartment smells like “lightly used” clay no matter what I do. I’ve tried high-sided plastic boxes, covered ones, different litters… everything ends up scratched, stained, or holding odor.I’m starting to eye those fancy sifting setups and the stainless steel litter box options, mostly because I’m sick of scrubbing plastic and worrying if it’s actually clean or just “visually okay.” For anyone with multiple cats who’s switched to a sifting / metal setup: did it actually cut down your cleaning time and litter usage, or is it just expensive cat furniture? Any brands or designs you’d avoid? What size worked best for bigger cats, and did your picky ones adapt or boycott it? Would love real-world experiences before I drop $$$ on something shiny my cats might ignore. submitted by /u/Intelligent-Panda495 to r/Catownerhacks [link] [comments]

Senior cat constantly asking me to follow him – I don’t understand what he wants
Hi everyone, I’m feeling really overwhelmed and I don’t know what else to do. My cat Prince is a 16-year-old, male, red point, neutered, strictly indoor, and he has weighed 4 kg (about 8.8 lbs) consistently for the last 5 years. During the last week, whenever he’s awake, he actively looks for me and asks me to follow him. This behavior can last up to 3 hours, but I don’t understand where he wants to go or if he needs something specific. I first took him to a veterinarian who said nothing was wrong. Then another vet came to my home and told me that Prince was dehydrated and needed an extra litter box. The vet also recommended water fountains and ceramic/stainless-steel bowls, which I placed in all five rooms of my apartment. Despite this, he doesn’t touch the water at all. He only eats Royal Canin Gastrointestinal wet food, about 1 and a half pouches per day. If I add water to the food, he refuses to eat it. His sleep schedule is roughly 14 hours a day: from 4 AM to 11 AM, and from 8 PM to 2 AM, plus a few naps during the day. He has toys and we also have structured play sessions. He plays actively for about 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times per day, without seeming tired or exhausted. This year, he lost his two companions, two poodles he had lived with since birth. I don’t know if this is related, but I feel like he wants something I can’t give him, and it’s breaking my heart. I feel desperate. The only thing that reduces his meowing during these long walks is singing to him the entire time. What could this be? What else can I do to help him? Thank you for reading. submitted by /u/zileanwillcarryu to r/CATHELP [link] [comments]

Best stainless steel litter box recs
I currently have an XL (24”x16”x12”) stainless litter box that I ordered from Furrbby (https://www.furrbby.com/products/xl-front-entry-stainless-steel-litter-box-with-stair) but would like something even larger. I also would like to be 12”+ in height but would like it to be fully stainless and one piece. I’ll include a photo of one I found on Amazon that is almost exactly what I want, I just wish it were longer and wider than 24”x16” The breeder we got our MC from literally used large Rubbermaid concrete mixing tubs. Great for size but I hate the thought of a plastic tub if I can find stainless steel instead. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/hersheyboy2020 to r/mainecoons [link] [comments]

Stainless steel stuck together
My wife suggested we get stainless steel litter boxes for our cats because they’re easier to clean so I bought a two pack on Amazon. I’m unable to get them apart. Are stainless steel litter trays worth it?
Hello everyone 👋 I’ve been looking at ways to make my cats litter tray as odourless as possible. I scoop twice a day and clean the litter tray thoroughly once a week but still feel it smells. I currently have a plastic box with a lid, but heard lots about stainless steel boxes. They’re a little more expensive than usual trays so just wanted to see if they actually work in keeping odours to a minimum! Thanks :) submitted by /u/finelinex to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Stainless steel litter box recs?
I’m curious if anyone here has brand recommendations or experiences to share regarding stainless steel litter boxes? It seems like the people who love them really love them, but I’ve also read some horror story reviews about bad joining between tops/covers and bases that have led to leaking urine. Some five-star reviews also just seem a little repetitive in a way that makes me worried they’re not all authentic. My cat currently uses an XL covered plastic litter box, and the smell is pretty fully in the plastic at this point. Stainless seems like a great option, but I’d love to hear some firsthand experiences and recommendations. Thanks! submitted by /u/mattywheelz401 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Cannot live with the smell of cat litter boxes! Please help. What can I do?
We have a ragdoll kitten and everyone in the house is completely in love with him. He’s the best cat I’ve ever had, and grew up with lots of cats, same as my husband, but neither of us has ever had a ragdoll before. The difference being, though, that all the cats we had as children and young adults were all outdoor cats - no cat litter. We have a covered, stainless steel litter box. I scoop three times a day. I hoover around it once a day. I dump the whole thing out once a week (which makes it expensive). But it still stinks when I walk in the house sometimes. I have a really sensitive sense of smell and I can’t stand it. The cleaning is fine - although not ideal. I am a neat freak anyway, but the smell surprising me is not something I want to put up with longterm. But what do I do? My husband thinks we should let him be an outdoor cat (put in a cat flap) as we have a large garden that it’s hard for him to jump the fence of (he hasn’t yet - we let him potter about when we’re also out there), and that we should provide a soil pile that he can poop on that we regularly maintain. But I’m worried about him eventually jumping the fence. If you also have a very sensitive sense of smell and couldn’t stand a regular litter box situation, what did you do??? Stainless steel litterboxes?
My ads these days are about 50% litter boxes and I’m getting very tempted by stainless steel. Does anyone have experience with them? Are stainless steel litter boxes really the move?
I have 3 cats and 3 litter boxes. I have those big plastic litter boxes that look like giant plants. I love them. But they absolutely harbor smell and need to get scrubbed frequently. We’re moving and I’m getting them new stuff for their litter because I’m not packing these with me. Are stainless steel ones really worth the hype? Also, lid or no lid? I love how cute the plant ones are but it’s time for a change I think. TIA submitted by /u/astro-amphibian-00 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Bought a stainless steel box about 2 weeks ago, now I think it may be an issue
Help from anyone who has transitioned from plastic. My cat is a beast requiring use of a tote because the tallest litter box wasn't big enough for his daddy long legs pee. He was in box, his wee wee was not. That box was finally retaining so much odor and I couldn't find a tote of a similar size that didn't have un ideal qualities, like an inside lower edge that would be impossible to clean etc. I splurged on one of those xxl stainless steel boxes. I LOVE it. It's the same height as his tote with the attached rim. He made the transition immediately and has been peeing and pooping. I scoop a few times a day, so it's always clean. And the bonus...his litter box is right next to my tub. Aside from not smelling like cat piss, and being SO easy to clean he also isn't kicking litter everywhere. I love it. The rub. I'm 99% sure he started peeing in my tub. I say 99% sure because, it may be coming from the tap. I smelled it. It doesn't smell like straight up ammonia like his pee does. But it doesn't smell like water either. I just dried it thoroughly and will know if he does it again. The pees he is leaving in the box aren't those little tiny ones like when they have a UTI. He's not screaming in there. I've had cats with crystals before. When he had the plastic plastic I could hear him digging to china for like 10 mins at a time. I don't hear that now. I was worried his nails against the steel would be no good but I don't hear a thing. Is it possible this is an unsatisfying feeling for him? He misses scratching the s*** out of something? Could it be cold on his toes? Does it not...smell enough? Cause his old box even when cleaned thoroughly with soap still smelled of total piss. heeelllppppp. I'm so worried. And let's be honest. There is one large factor I may not have mentioned. He could just be doing this because he's a cat. My first through it always "my baby is suffering. OMG. PANIC." But in reality. This could just be cat. All input, experiences, advice appreciated and welcome. Thank you fellow humans owned by cats. headbonks submitted by /u/Mean-Vegetable-4521 to r/cats [link] [comments]

High quality brand: Stainless steel litter box
Sorry that stainless steel boxes get asked about a lot, but I can’t find an answer to my particular question. There are so many options out there.
