I’m sorry but when did summer camp become so expensive. $762 for a camp for one week and almost $5000 for the entire summer? Does parenting ever become any easier. I’ve tried the Summer Rising and because the area I am in, my daughter never gets selected…. Ever. Is it just me or is everyone noticing this also? To preface this, I'll be honest and say I had no regrets about my summer camp wedding in the immediate days and weeks afterward (honeymoon glow!) but as time went on, small details about my guests' actual experience at the wedding began to trickle out. It's now been about a year since my wedding. With the benefit of hindsight, I can now say I wish I'd thought through my camp wedding plans in more detail and perhaps picked a different way to bring all our loved ones together if I could have a do-over. The basics: Location: summer camp that does weddings on the side - Mountain West, USA - on a non-camp weekend in the early summer Accommodations: all guests were strongly encouraged to stay onsite in bunks (electricity, water, and linens provided, but no climate control). The nearest hotel was a 30-minute drive away on winding roads. Each bunk was shared among 8ish people, all of whom knew each other in advance. Fees: $280/guest/weekend which included two nights in the bunks, plus four meals including the wedding reception dinner. Size: Invited 105 people, 84 RSVP'd yes, 79 attended. The good: The camp itself was gorgeous and very peaceful Many of the family members on both sides are very outdoorsy people and they genuinely loved the camp environment. No drinking and driving! We got to have lots of quality time with our loved ones during the weekend, including quiet moments I now look back on and treasure. The medium-bad: It was impossible for our guests to get to the camp without renting a car, which was an added expense. The food was just ok. All meals except the reception dinner were eaten in a mess hall, which wound up smelling gross (very camp compost vibes) and everything was served out of a camp salad bar. There were flies on all the food all weekend. Not ideal. We toured the facility in the fall when the flies weren't there... There were essentially no food options available outside of the food served onsite. I didn't mind but some guests did. Cabins were pretty rustic so people couldn't get ready or look nice (one mirror for eight people, for example). The very, very bad: 1. Cabins had no AC and there happened to be a heat wave the week of our wedding. I later found out that no one really got good sleep either of the nights of the event, and then some people felt pressured to do a bunch of camp activities the next day when they were tired and grouchy. This was exacerbated by the eight-people-in-one-cabin situation; anytime someone got up in the night or early in the morning it woke everyone else up. I didn't realize this when we toured. 2. There was essentially no cell service at the camp except for one specific area a good walk away from the cabins. As a result, no one could coordinate with each other about activities, meetup times, etc. and although my wedding party planned for this in advance, guests were surprised and had trouble coordinating with each other to meet up at activities. 3. Most of our friends were outdoorsy and really enjoyed the camping vibe, but I later found out there were definitely some who were kind of miserable all weekend. Especially for the couples who were miserable - I feel so bad that we charged them $560 as a couple for the weekend, when they could have gotten a much more comfortable hotel and their own meals for probably around that price. We didn't mandate that anyone stay at the campsite of course, but we strongly encouraged it because we wanted people to spend time onsite because that was the whole point of getting a summer camp. —— The moral of the story is: if literally every one of your attendees is outdoorsy and down for a camp wedding, it's a cute and creative way to spend meaningful time with people you love! But for any guest who isn't -- you are making a huge, huge ask of them, and especially if they're a close friend they may feel pressured to attend and play into your vision even if it makes them miserable. I read on this subreddit that sometimes asking this can make people feel like props in your vision and I think that was unfortunately true for us. I was in elementary school and went on a girls camp/retreat and my cabin leader told us to be careful what you pray out loud because the devil can’t read your thoughts but he can hear you and could use your prayers against you. New anxiety was unlocked. I was upper elementary/middle school age and went to a summer camp - after days of playing hard and being in the sun I closed the chapel down because I was “slain in the spirit” on the floor. I went back to my cabin with a few others who were also “slain in the spirit” at almost midnight. I didn’t want to tel anyone because of the praise I got for this, but because I was a CHILD and was at summer camp I had just fallen asleep. Another night at this same camp the pastor had talked about your “calling”. In elementary school I had so much pressure to find me “calling” and my “purpose” and as a kid with undiagnosed ADHD I had so much anxiety because I couldn’t keep interest in anything and also I was a kid ffs. Anyway, I was “slain in the spirit” again and had a dream about two birds leaving their baby bird. I took that as a “vision” that I was supposed to be a children’s pastor. I held on to that for a long time. I was in middle school and had major major anxiety about end times. I doubted my salvation daily. I thought if I could get “baptized in the spirit” and speak in tongues then I’d know for sure I was saved - super problematic I know. I tried several nights in a row to accept the Holy Spirit. I talked to a leader about it and she prayed with me. I felt so anxious that we was waiting with me and felt so much pressure that I halfway consciously faked mumbling in “tongues.” Then kept doing until it felt real and convinced myself it was real. Fast forward to being in college. I went with my church as a cabin leader. This was a much less “spiritual” camp but although I went to be a cabin leader for the girls I already knew and worked with, I was placed with a group of girls only 2-3 years younger than me that were complete strangers and I was supposed to be their leader/mentor. I tried so hard to mentor these girls and be vulnerable with me as I led them in discussion time. At the end of the week, another male cabin leader approached me and said he had heard through some of his students that my students were really struggling with deep issues including questioning their salvation. [Remorse] For a few years in my early 20's I was a summer camp counselor. It wasn't a typical summer camp in that it was held on a college campus where we stayed in dorms and the campers attended various classes/activities in college class rooms all day. It was also atypical because there was only one session each summer that lasted several weeks. Campers returned each year and were assured of being with the same campers as the year before so tight bonds formed. The camp was for later elementary through early high school students. Due to the relatively close age of the older campers and counsellors, we were hammered in training about what was appropriate and inappropriate contact with campers - and the consequences for crossing those lines. For the first couple of years I was there, this wasn't an issue. It's wasn't uncommon for the older kids to develop crushes on counselors, and I was no exception, but it was easy enough to deflect them. My last summer there, two girls, roommates in the dorm who were each 14, really started pushing boundaries. They were attractive and they knew it - I'm sure you're aware of the type (not that that fact is any sort of excuse on my part). They began flirting with me pretty overtly early on in camp, and while I knew I couldn't act on it, I'll admit I found it flattering. Long story short, my resolved weakened, and it culminated with a night in my dorm room with both of them after lights out. They were both consenting, and it involved contact among all three of us. I used protection with both of them and at the end of the night we all agreed not to speak of it again. Also, they both told me that prior to that night they were virgins. There were a couple weeks left and camp and nothing inappropriate happened afterwards. However, the two of them got into a pretty serious fight the last week of camp that resulted in one of the girls leaving early. I honestly don't know if the fight involved me, but I worry that it did. Several years have passed, and I've had no contact with either of the girls other than being friends on Facebook, which they both individually initiated. I don't know if they have contact with one another or not. I've go through spells of varying degrees of guilt over the situation. In addition to that, there are the obvious legal ramifications if this were to come to light (there are still a couple of years before the statute of limitations applies in my state). I've got no reason to think it WILL come to light, but the weight of the entire thing gets to me from time to time. I don't really know what to expect from posting this.
