A knock on the storm cellar
My daughter Cleo turned 12 not too long ago. She has lived in this house her entire life, and now we’re moving out. It’s not anything dramatic; we’re just moving into a bigger place. She’s growing up and deserves a better space, and Molly and I are in a position where we can afford it. But as we’re packing up our things and looking to the future, I want to acknowledge something that happened in this house when we first moved in. Cleo was closing in on her first birthday. Molly and I were working around the clock juggling a child, two full-time jobs, and a remote part-time job on the weekends. It was rough, but that’s to be expected. We had planned for this family, and we were ready to pay the price. Doesn’t mean we weren’t acknowledging the hardships. We’d just moved to this house on the northern edge of Tornado Alley. While it did get the occasional storm, the place itself was safe enough that the house had never needed any serious repairs. Not from the weather, at least. We got the place a little cheaper than expected. It was an 80’s style brick-and-mortar kind of building with a solid concrete storm cellar. One floor, separate garage. Solid outer walls; cheap interior. You can feel the heat from the kitchen while standing in the hallway, all the way through the paper-thin faux wooden wall panels. That first month, as we moved in, we ran into our first problem. The storm cellar was having some trouble with cracks in the northernmost wall. Nothing serious, but just enough for there to be a sort of bulge. We had a guy check it out, and he acknowledged that it needed to be reinforced if we wanted to utilize the space safely. Luckily, we caught it early. The neighborhood was great though. We lived at the end of the street near five other houses. Identical style, different colors. Ours was the green one. While fixing up our storm cellar, we had our first reminder of just how close to Tornado Alley we were. While those across the state line to the south were bunkering down for a possible tornado, we only had to prep for a nasty storm. Perfect start to the summer. On the day of the storm, we had a neighbor come by. Clyde. Salt-of-the-earth kinda guy, had lived there his entire life. Just a couple of years short of retirement, Clyde had the proportions of a walking meatball sporting a baseball cap. And yet, he always seemed to be out and about, mucking around in the garden and carrying things in and out of his garage. Clyde stopped by our place and handed me a walkie-talkie. “Everyone on the street has one,” he explained. “Just so we can stay in touch if things get bad.” “You guys thought of everything,” I smiled. “Stay prepared, you don’t gotta get prepared.” “Boy scouts?” “YouTube.” He winked, gave me a pat on the shoulder, and lumbered away. Now I had a fancy new walkie-talkie. Nothing expensive, and the channel was a preset, but it carried a bit of weight. Solid stuff. Molly called out when she noticed the first drops of water on the kitchen window. I was already downstairs, doing my best to prepare us for a long night ahead. There were three rooms; one of which we were later going to turn into a laundry room. That’d have to wait until we fixed the wall though. For now, I had to make sure Cleo would be comfortable, and that we had all the supplies we needed. I tested the walkie-talkie a couple of times and got a response not just from Clyde, but a couple of other neighbors too. An older woman jokingly telling us she’d come by with a casserole once the storm was over, and a grumpy middle-aged man that firmly reminded us that the channel was for emergency use only. Once everything was prepped I waited upstairs. Cleo was having the mid-day fussies. Molly was firmly fixated on the kitchen window, looking out. She had this cat-like feature, like she was seeing something I wasn’t. I half-expected her to tap at the window. “You alright there?” I asked. “Yeah,” she mumbled. “I just don’t like how it looks.” The dark clouds were closing in. We were at the birth of the storm, but that didn’t mean we’d have a walk in the park. Things could get bad, and we couldn’t take any chances. Not with Cleo. The wind picked up. I changed Cleo and got her things all packed up. I pulled Molly away from the window as we hurried out back. The storm cellar had this thick tilted metal door. We hurried downstairs, and I locked the door from the inside. Not that there was a reason to; it’s just what you do. Cleo settled down. I’d brought down an air mattress, and there was a cooler with a couple of drinks, baby food, and snacks to keep us going. We were gonna fix the place up later, but this would have to do for now. Cleo had a cozy little cot in the corner; a plastic thing that we usually brought when we traveled. Not that we had a lot of time for that kind of thing. I did a double-check on all the lights and our chargers. There was this large locker in the far-off room with the bulging wall. I presumed that locker held the fuse box. The thing was old as hell, and the warning stickers had long since faded, so I didn’t want to touch anything. Still, I figured it was good to know where to go if the power cut out. We didn’t get very good reception down there, but Molly had a couple of shows preloaded on her iPad so we could watch some reruns later in the night. The wind kept going. I could hear it cut along the corner of the house, rattling the gutters. The raindrops had gone from tapping on the door to passing us by, as the rain turned sideways. Staying down there was just a precaution, but by the way things were going, we had the right idea. It got pretty bad, pretty fast. People started talking over the walkie-talkie. Even the grumpy middle-aged guy. “Looks like the tree in the yard is going down,” someone said. “Fence is shaking something awful,” another one said. Clyde, on the other hand, just kept checking in with people. We had an hourly roll call, and when he noticed one of us weren’t responding, he decided to go do something about it. There was this older man living down the street that hadn’t picked up, and Clyde was getting worried. “Old guy lives on his own, surrounded by floppy disks and TV dinners. I’ll head over to check on him in a bit.” A couple of people protested, but Clyde wasn’t having it. Apparently, he used to be an army medic. Molly was sitting in the other room, rocking Cleo back and forth. She had this song about a blue sunflower that her parents taught her, and it always put Cleo to sleep. A couple of tunes from that lullaby was all it took. It was like a magic trick, or an off switch. I sat down next to them as the wind raged outside. Molly turned her attention to me. “Did they say anything?” she whispered. “About what?” “About what’s going on up there.” “It’s pretty rough,” I admitted. “Clyde is heading out to check on someone.” “Did something happen?” “Not sure. Maybe. They’re not responding.” Molly nodded, looking up, as if staring out an invisible window. “I dunno,” she whispered. “I got this bad feeling. Like today is special.” As if responding, the electronics locker in the other room made an uncomfortable noise. A stark reminder that this was just the beginning. The sun was setting, but the storm raged on. It wasn’t speeding up or slowing down, but there was this constant pressure on the side of our house. You could hear the way it was blowing, pulling at the roof tiles. Every now and then you’d hear something heavy fell over or scrape against the façade. Molly was taking a well-deserved nap with Cleo while I was sitting in the other room waiting by the walkie-talkie. I wasn’t exactly expecting anything, but someone had to stay prepared if something happened. So far, we were doing pretty good. There were a couple of alarming sounds coming from the locker, but I chalked that up as protests of an old house, or cheap wiring. As long as the light stayed on, I wasn’t touching it. Breaker boxes and I don’t get along. The others were chatting a little back and forth, checking in on each other and waiting for Clyde to return. When he finally did, I could tell something was wrong. He was winded. “Someone broke in,” he wheezed. “Front door’s busted, the whole place has been turned upside down.” “Holy shit, you sure?” The middle-aged grumpy guy quickly changed his tone. “There’s blood on the floor, but there’s no one there. I don’t know what’s going on. I called the police, but they can’t do anything until the storm passes.” The old woman chimed in. “Everyone make sure your doors and windows are locked tight!” As we reassured one another, I could hear one voice disappear into the background. I wasn’t sure about who they were, but I could tell I’d heard them a couple of times prior. They were a neighbor, but I couldn’t pinpoint their house. “Someone’s knocking,” they said, trying to speak over the buzz of voices. “Someone’s knocking on my door.” “Don’t open,” Clyde said. “You stay right where you are. Storm’s getting bad, I barely made it back. Ain’t no way no sane person is running around out there at this hour.” “You sure it’s someone knocking?” the older woman asked. “It’s not just a branch?” “I’m sure,” the man repeated. “They did the tap taptaptap-tap thing.“ “Just making sure you heard me,” Clyde repeated. “You don’t open that door.” “I hear you.” A storm can easily play tricks on you. If you listen long enough, you can start hearing things. It’s like watching static on a TV; after a while, you start imagining one side gaining strength, or conscious movement. The same goes for a storm. It can almost seem alive. Cleo woke up for a little while. I made sure she was fed and cared for, giving Molly some well-earned rest. Baby in hand, I wandered back and forth, listening. There were these little creaks and cracks everywhere. The bulge in the wall. The metal door. The roof tiles. Anything could be a knock, or hide a careful step. What had happened to the old man down the street? Had Clyde really walked in on the aftermath of a murder? Cleo wasn’t happy about being carried, so I turned to get her back to her mother. As I walked past the stairs leading up to the cellar door, I stopped. Looking up, I perked my ears. Was that a knock? Strange things were being talked about on the walkie-talkie. Someone else had heard a knock. The old woman wasn’t sure, she might have heard one too. And most recently; one of them stopped responding entirely. They tried to discuss the disappearance rationally, but Clyde wasn’t having it. “There ain’t nothing wrong with my walkies,” he stated. “If someone ain’t responding, something’s wrong. He’s been here all day, I can’t see why he’d go away now.” “Didn’t he say he heard a knock too?” the old woman added. “That don’t mean anything,” the middle-aged man sighed. “Be prepared.” “I’m calling the police again,” Clyde said. “Soon as the weather clears, I want cars lining the street.” I didn’t know what to think. It could be nothing. There could be a hundred reasons why you stop responding. The button could be broken, or the battery ran out. Maybe he fell asleep, or left it in the other room. But then again, why would he? It was a tense situation, and we all knew it. No one was taking this lightly. As I checked in on Molly, I noticed her mumbling in her sleep. Nothing big, but it was unusual for her. She was a heavy sleeper. As I backed away to give her some space, I noticed the pattern of what she was saying. She wasn’t just mumbling nonsense. She was talking. “Come in,” she mumbled. “Come in.” As the hours passed there were less voices on the walkie-talkie. A couple might have fallen asleep, but I got the feeling that there was something more to it. Clyde was having the same idea, but couldn’t bring himself to go back out. It’s one thing to be out in the storm, but another thing entirely to be out in the dark. “I’m telling you, there’s something out there,” Clyde said. “There were tears in the wallpaper. The kitchen door was pulled straight off the hinges. Someone went berserk in there.” I’d been quiet for some time. I didn’t want to wake Cleo, but she was out cold. “You sure it wasn’t the storm?” I asked. “Yeah, yeah,” Clyde responded. “A storm don’t break down the front door and leave the living room, you know.” I was about to respond when I heard something. I turned my head and took my thumb off the receiver. That was definitely a knock on the cellar door. Tap taptaptap-tap. I sat there, listening. After a couple of seconds, the knock came back. Twice, this time. Harder. Then I noticed something in the other room; Molly was getting up. She held Cleo tight and walked towards the stairs. She must have heard the knocking. There was no way she’d miss it. “Honey? What are you doing?” I asked. It took me a moment to realize she had her eyes closed. She was heading for the door, still mumbling to herself. “…come in.” I put my hand on her shoulder and saw the white in her eyes light up. She turned my way, blinking away the sleep. “What are you doing?” I asked again. “What?” She looked around, just as confused as I was. Once she realized she was on her feet, she turned back towards the mattress without a word. “Were you going upstairs?” I asked. “It felt like the right thing to do.” “What are you talking about?” “I’m sorry,” she sighed. “I’m tired. Don’t listen to me.” The moment she sat down, the knock came back. Louder this time. Insistent. I walked up the stairs and made sure the door was locked. I could hear the wind outside, threatening to grab hold of the door and break it open. But there was another sound, too. Something just on the other side. I’m not sure if it was some kind of breathing, but it was something heavy. Something that didn’t have the same rhythm as the storm. Then again, I could just have been listening for too long. It’s like when you say a word too many times and it starts to sound like a noise. Going back down, I peeked in on Molly. She was out like a light. “Clyde, you there?” I said, whispering into the walkie-talkie. “Yeah, what’s up?” “There’s someone out there,” I said. “There was a knock.” “Who the hell is outside in this weather?” “I don’t know, but I don’t like it. I don’t know what to do.” “I’d come over, but it’s too risky.” “What do I do?” Clyde came up with a couple ideas. He suggested I make sure I knew where the flashlights were in case the power cut out. I wasn’t too worried about that, seeing as I had the locker with the electric stuff in the other room (presumably). He also suggested keeping a low profile, but only up until the point where someone is clearly trying to break in. If it was a burglar, making your presence known would probably scare them off. I didn’t tell him about Molly, and her unusual behavior. I didn’t know what to make of it, and just talking about it out loud would make me sound paranoid. Maybe storms make people behave strangely. They say crime goes up during full moons, who’s to say sleepwalking doesn’t go up during storms? “If it’s you they’re after, and not your things, be prepared,” Clyde said. “They’ll try to trick you. They’ll probably pull the power, or do something to grab your attention. Don’t fall for it.” “Grab my attention? Like what?” The moment I said it, a new noise cut through the wind; my car alarm. I asked Clyde if he could see it from his house. Turns out, he could. My car was in the driveway, flipped over. No other car on our street had flipped over. I could hear the wind scraping against the walkie-talkie as he called back to me. “It’s on the side!” he gasped. “Driver’s side!” The storm wasn’t strong enough to do that. But then again, neither was a person. “You see anyone? Anyone at all?” “It’s hard to tell. There’s just this big clothesline.” “Clothesline?” “Yeah, there are these gray metal poles sticking out, I think it’s-“ There was a short pause. We didn’t have a clothesline. That’s what our upcoming laundry room was for. Clyde’s voice came back. “Nevermind, must’ve been debris. It’s gone. I can’t see shit.” Over the next hour, things started getting weird. I heard glass shatter upstairs, and what sounded like someone climbing in through a window. There were footsteps, and the sound of furniture falling over. Someone slammed a door. Molly and Cleo slept through the whole thing. I wanted to wake her, just to make sure she was prepared, but something didn’t seem right. She wasn’t herself. None of this was normal. I was trying to hear Clyde, but I could barely make out what he was saying. I had to hold the walkie-talkie up to my ear as the noises grew louder. He was telling me to keep quiet, to listen, and to wait. If they were ransacking the house, they most probably wouldn’t be looking for me or my family. Hopefully, it was just some opportunist trying to make a quick buck. Then the power cut out. “Molly?” I whispered. She didn’t answer. I fumbled for my flashlight as I held down the button on the walkie-talkie. “Power outage,” I said. “Is it just me, or did you-“ “No, it’s just you,” Clyde interrupted. “You know where the breaker is?” “Yeah, it’s right here. I’m in the cellar.” There was a pause. I turned my flashlight to the big locker. “No it ain’t,” Clyde said. “It’s near the back door.” “You sure?” “Our houses are built the same. The breaker is by the back door.” I would have to go upstairs if I wanted to turn the power back on. That made sense. I’d mixed up the breaker box with some kind of storage locker. I’d imagined hearing all kinds of weird electrical noise coming from it, but that’s just the kind of tricks the storm plays on you. I figured I might check it anyway just to be sure. I placed my hand on the locker. As I did; another knock. Tap taptaptap-tap. An echo from the cellar door, right upstairs. The wind suddenly intensified as a gust rushed down the stairs. Hurrying out to see what was going on, I realized the cellar door was wide open. Sweeping the rooms with my flashlight, I couldn’t see Molly. I called out to her and Cleo, but there was no response. I checked every corner to make sure, but there was no doubt about it; she was gone. My mouth went dry as I ran up the stairs. Poking my head out into the storm, I noticed a small silhouette walking away in the distance. It was holding something. It had to be Molly. I called out to her again, but still, no response. I followed her into the storm, feeling the water rush through my shoes. The wind almost overwhelmed me, but I managed to keep my balance by leaning into it. There was no way she could hear me. I could barely hear my own breathing. I tried to hold on to that phantom image of Molly and Cleo, but they were getting further and further away. Now, I didn’t know the area that well, but I knew there was a wheat field straight ahead. There was also a storage shed. I couldn’t imagine what compelled her to head that way, but it was the only structure out there. In the moments where I lost sight of her, I headed for the shed. That would get me a glimpse of her again and again, making me think that’s where she’s headed. My feet were going numb from the cold, and my teeth kept chattering. I didn’t know if it was just the cold, or the stress. I couldn’t think straight. There was no world where my Molly would take our daughter into a raging storm. The walkie-talkie crackled and complained. I crossed a knee-high fence swaying in the wind, raindrops peltering the left side of my face, as I saw the shed further down a trail. And right next to it; Molly. I hurried up to the shed, dashing through the wheat, letting it soak straight through me. I got to the door, slammed it open, and hurried inside. Molly was right there, curled up on the floor right next to boxes of farming equipment and old iron tools. She was sleeping soundly, and Cleo was too. They were both soaked right through, but neither seemed bothered. I got down on my knees and wrapped them up in a hug, trying to whisper through my panting breaths. “What were you thinking?!” Molly didn’t wake up. She just adjusted herself, sound asleep, muttering. “Mothers know.” The door swung wide open; I must not have closed it enough. Something snagged on it and the wind grabbed hold. I looked back at Molly, but she didn’t seem bothered. Turning around, I could’ve sworn I heard something through the rush of the wind. The windows were shaking in their frames, and the wheat swayed back and forth, but there was something else. Something rhythmic. Footsteps? There was movement in the corner of my eye. Someone outside the window. I got up, grabbed a spade from one of the shelves, and readied myself. My blood ran cold as my teeth kept chattering. The adrenaline was getting to me. My fingers cramped around the handle of the spade. Another thump. Something was on top of the shed. I saw a hand. A big, gray, hand. It reached down from the roof, down the front of the shed. I could see it in the open door. The arm was impossibly long, and single-jointed. Thin, like a broom handle. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Slowly but surely, it grabbed a hold of the door and gently closed it with a firm click. Seconds later, it climbed down. As it did, I heard Molly stir. She mumbled again. “…thank you.” A noise in response. A knock. Tap taptaptap-tap. I sat next to Molly and Cleo for hours as the storm died down. We spent the entire night in that shed. It wasn’t a bad idea to take shelter there; this thing had been built to last. If something can survive 40 to 50 years of bad weather without toppling over, it has to be doing something right. Clyde’s voice came through somewhere around 4 am. The police were coming; they just had to clear the roads. Apparently, there’d been other people calling about disturbances. Home invasions. No one seemed to be hurt though, they were all counted for. The middle-aged grumpy guy and old lady included. When Molly finally woke up, she seemed just as confused as I was. As the wind died down, she looked up at me with half-closed eyes. “I had the strangest dream,” she yawned. “Where are we?” Going back to the house, I got a clear view of the damage. Something had torn through our back door and ransacked our house, just like Clyde described. Molly didn’t want to go inside, thinking it probably wasn’t safe for Cleo to be around a bunch of broken furniture and glass, so she decided to wait in the car. Turns out she hadn’t heard the part about it being flipped on the side. She settled on waiting at Clyde’s place for the time being. Meanwhile, I went into the storm cellar to check the extent of the damage, and to get Cleo’s things. But just a couple of steps down the stairs, I noticed something. Blood. Turning on my flashlight, I went downstairs, being careful not to touch the red trail. At the bottom of the stairs, it took a sharp turn to the right. It lead straight to the storage locker. The one I thought had been the breaker box. There was a dead man in it. When I say dead man, I don’t know for certain. The body was completely destroyed. A couple of limbs lay strewn across the floor, and most of the skin around the face had been peeled back like a ripe orange. And there, by what I guess had once been his feet, was a gun. A loaded handgun. I could barely see it for all the viscera. I ran out of there as fast as I could. When I saw the squad cars, I pointed and screamed. When I got to Molly, I held her close and stroked her hair; more so to calm myself than anything else. She was safe. Cleo was safe. That’s all I cared about. As I held her close and watched the flashing lights descend on our house, she whispered to me. “I dreamt there was someone coming to warn us,” she said. “Someone who lived with an old man, and was terribly, terribly, sad.” I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t want to tell her what I’d seen. Not yet. There’d be plenty of time to look into it later, but for now, I just held her. The future could wait a little longer. In the days that followed, a lot of details emerged. The old man Clyde went to check on had been found shot. It seemed to be a failed home invasion. The perpetrator had fled, as if chased by something. He had hidden in our basement. He must have slipped in while I was going up and down, moving Cleo’s things. Bad timing, I suppose. He probably just saw an open door and rushed inside. He must’ve been desperate. He’d hidden in the storage locker, waiting for the night to pass. He’d been a couple of feet away all night, with a loaded weapon, ready to take me down if I so much as touched the handle on that locker. He probably would’ve done it, too. He had plenty of ammo to spare, and he was known to be a decent shot. But there was something else. Something I can’t quite explain. There had been something out in the storm. Something he was fleeing from. Something that had come to warn us, knocking on that door, trying to find a way to get to us. It had been looking for him all down the street, tearing through every house to find him. Even flipping a car, like he was checking under a carpet. Not to hurt us. Not to tear us apart, but to stop him. And for one reason or another, Molly heard that warning. I suppose, in some ways, mothers just know. The strangest detail is his death though. Despite all that gore, the man in our storm cellar didn’t die from having his arms torn off. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Now that Cleo has turned 12, we’ve decided to leave that house. The storm cellar looks very different today than it did all those years ago. The storage locker is gone, and the laundry room is all set up. The wall is fixed; haven’t had a problem with it for a long time. Whoever buys the place will have a very different first impression of it. Clyde is still around. Our old neighborhood is pretty close-knit, and I’m sad to leave them all behind, but sometimes you have to trust your gut. Even when it tells you to move. Or more importantly, when it tells you to walk into the storm. Cleo is almost a teenager now. It’s impossible that she would ever remember something from that night, but I still get the impression that it left something with her. Whenever she knocks on a door, she uses that same pattern. Tap taptaptap-tap. And sometimes, in her sleep, I hear her mumbling like her mother did that night. Just little things. “I’m okay.” “Sleep tight.” “See you tomorrow.” Looking back, there are so many things that scare me about that night. The thought of losing my family. An armed man waiting for an opportunity. A long gray arm, opening a door. …and what it did to a man it despised. submitted by /u/Saturdead to r/nosleep [link] [comments]

Updated One UI 8.0 Dualish Monitor Support w DispayLink
Preface: This builds on something others have done for many years (u/JonLSTL and u/MRP_yt for example) and am now realizing that I can do more now with Samsung's updates to "Connected Displays" and "Simulated Displays" that were not present back in 2020/2021. This is not an official samsung thing but works 100% with 2 monitors (I had 2 4k monitors. one dell, one LG), 2 hdmi cords, usbc cable, a Display Link Adapter (any kind that has 1 alt-mode and 1 hdmi) and the Display Link Presenter Application from Google Play (Free). Everything else is 100% stock android (plus Samsung DeX). I want to reiterate that this requires an adapter that has at least 1 alt-mode and 1 hdmi. I have tested this with a tab s8 ultra (8.0) , s25 ultra (8.0), and note 20 ultra (5.1). Just to not bury the lede. With 5.1, you cannot trigger dex to appear with simulated displays. But it is not necessary for "dual display" functionality. You will need a mouse and keyboard (bluetooth, combo, plug-in, doesn't matter). You must also enable "allow pointer to move across displays" (or similar wording) in your Samsung DeX settings. I am sure there are way's around the letterboxing (you'll see) but I don't have it in me to hack android to make the displays work right. HOWEVER setting the "Minimum Width" dp setting to 720 will enable Android's "tablet UI" for all app (that have a tablet UI). Setting to 1080 will give you a "large" space to move floating app windows around. New Functionality I couldn't do in 2020: You can actually drag and drop apps, files, content between the displays with One UI 8 (as it is "mirroring" your phone/tablet ui to one display) but the real kicker is that with "Simulated displays" you can do this between 3 or 4 displays as well. With a high enough resolution display this is very very fun but impractical, but it does let you "pin" things again in a hacky way That's mainly what I use it (a 480 simulated screen) for at least. I wish I knew how to put the simulated displays on to their own monitors. I can't figure that out. With One UI 5.1 Simulated Displays will not trigger DeX. I couldn't figure it out at least Steps Steps 1-7 are necessary. This isn't "new" and have been consistently working for me and several others since the pandemic as my half baked "dual monitor solution" Download the DisplayLink Presenter App from Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.displaylink.presenter). Open the application (nothing will happen yet) Connect your DisplayLink Supported Adapter to your phone/tab via usb-c (3.2 is what I used. Unsure what specs are specifically needed). My DisplayLink Adapter is a "Plugable USB-C Triple Monitor Docking Station, 100W Laptop Charging" (I got it during the pandemic. I'm sure its cheaper now. There's also a 60w version which is more than enough for samsung devices). Here is a link (unaffiliated): https://plugable.com/products/ud-3900pdz. Again nothing will happen yet. Connect One monitor to the Display Link Supported Adapter's ALT-MODE HDMI Port. DeX will start automatically (the preface said that you needed to have auto start dex turned on). The DisplayLink app will ask you to enable settings to access your adapter and run displaylink stuff. Another will be to do screen recording. This is necesaary for mirroring. Connect 2nd monitor to the DisplayLink Supported Adapter's DisplayLink Hdmi port. The DisplayLink Presenter App will show a pop-up asking to mirror your whole screen or just an app. You wan't the whole screen. FOR PHONES (this is actually new): Optional but highly recommended step (order still necessary). 1st do a manual backup of your settings (Settings > Account and Backup > Samsung Cloud > Back up data). There is a potential bug that I had w my S25Ultra (once) where Minimum Width wouldn't revert back to its moble UI. Restoring settings from the backup worked for me (trust me, you don't want to reset to factory settings. You will lose every setting you ever had, including wifi stuff. its a mess). Actual Step: In Developer Options (or settings search) scroll to "Minimum Width". By default for my S25Ultra this number was 418. For my Note 20Ultra this was 411. Anthing about 720 should tell android to display things in "tablet view ui." This is what Microsoft Duo users used to do in order to have tablet UI's on a single screen. This hack is also how Pixel user's could trigger the beta desktop mode when plugged into an external display and task bar. The maxium value it will take is 1440 (in my experience). I used this. I do think these numbers may very depending on if you have QHD, FHD, WQHD, etc selected for your display resolution. A solution to fixing it without just restoring from backup seems to be that if you adjust screen zoom settings it will "reset" (https://droidwin.com/fix-samsung-cannot-go-back-to-original-dpi-leave-tablet-mode/). For phones or tablets: Enable "Pop-up windows" support. (Swipe for pop-up view). Also enable "multi window for all apps" and "force activities to be resizable" in developer options. Depending on your version of One UI, this might be a multi-star goodlock feature or in Labs. With this you can treat your phone screen like it is its own "dex-like" mode. In landscape (especially with the higher dp settings in step 5) you will be able to have a "larger" canvas for not only more apps but better resolution. The apps will "draw" themsevles better and be less "blown up" which allows for better resizing. With tablets, there will be significantly better letter boxing. Also if your monitor is "smart" and can detect its own orientation (or set its own orientation) independant of the source device, you can take advantage of "portrait" mode as well. I have done this for years with various coding projects. I've done this with my tab s7+ and now tab s8u (I haven't seen a reason to upgrade it). Yes, this isn't as "useful" with large tablets (since they can be a monitor on their own) but being able to see it on an even larger display is great (I use 27 and 32inch monitors). Make sure you have mouse pointer flow turned on. It'll be under the connected display setting in dex. Also pro-tip: for keyboard settings, make sure you have the "show toolbar with bluetooth keyboard" this way you can still do the toolbar actions on the keyboard (i.e. bring up the clipboard, write-to-text, auto translation typing, etc) New (to me) steps: These things have been added at some point since One UI 6 and later. I never bothered to try them bc they didn't work years ago (or were non-existent) Drag and Drop windows/files/etc: This is baked into One UI 8.0. Something to note is that I could only get APPS to drag and drop windows on my Tab S8 Ultra. Couldn't get it to work on my S25U running 8.0. Also doing "send to other display" will send that app to open in full screen on your phone display. Can break immersion. Supposed coming to phones with One UI 8.5. Even more screens: As I mentioned in the preface, you can use Android's native "simulated displays" feature in Developer options. This will create floating resizable displays (with fixed resolutions 720 thru 4k). This displays can only be accessed via mouse over (see step seven). They will always be visible on your phone/tab display. You can resize them with a 2 finger pinch. These displays will also show up in your Connected Displays! AND THEY CAN BE REARRANGED This is cool because while your are limited to a "single" simulated display at a time, there is an option for "720 and 1080" displays. These displays on One UI 8 operate independently and show up independantly. One UI 5.1, any simulated display simply mirrored the phone screen. It wasn't useful to me. But a reddit user recently showed that this was updated! Thanks man u/Egapboi and u/Past_Syllabub_5055. To my knowledge these displays can only be landscape. Extra - How to use simulated displays: UI Things: These winows are "translucent" so if you want to have it fully take over the 2nd monitor and use it as just DeX you will want to set your wallpaper on the device to black or have a blacked out app open on it (I made a black out app on my own that I used for split screening on my Fold back in the day. That worked for this). This + mouse over will let you freely flow between the simulated display and DeX. Multiple virtual dextop support: This is a new dex feature. It's not great at all but it is there and it works. It is just completely broken in that you can't really move apps between the desktops easily. But, yes, you can have several virtual desktops on each display. Main device will only do this if it is a tab, but you can still do things like app pairs and such. This only exists on tablets running 8.0 (supposedly coming to phones with 8.5). PIN APPS: This is missing in New DeX. I use a simulated display and put it in the top right corner. In my arrangment settings I have that display "above" my main display for mouse over stuff. I throw spotify or netflix or whatever and "full screen" it. As noted before, these screens will appear ON your main display, the only way to "move" them is touch/mouse while on the main display. The only way to resize them is with touch (from what I could tell). Arrangement: As mentioned before, you can arrange these displays in Connected Displays. They show up extactly how they do on macOS or Windows. The only limitation I found is that displays snap to the bottom and to the middle of the display they connect to. I.e. If i have a display on the left of a display it will snap to the bottom left side. If I put it on the top, it will snap to the middle. You can have multiple screens on one side but the bottom and middle rule comes first. "3 or 4 screens": Like I said before. There is also a 720+1080 pair option. If you "black out" the Main Device display, you can "split screen" those 2 displays relatively evently across a shared display. With mouse flow (and a large enough monitor), the immersion feels very real. Quirkyness: Its dumb needing to have your main device screen on all the time but its a requirement. And no you can not cover it with a keyboard cover because that will turn the display off and kill screen mirroring. You can flip it over. Again, seems kinda dumb if you have an ultra tablet but its useful if plugging into any monitor bigger than 15inches + a second monitor. I really really really reall wish you could send the simulated displays to another display. Idk what the requirements are for displaylink and stuff but I know that I hooked up 3 screens to my mac during the pandemic w this plugable and it was great. I wish i could do that with my phones or tab There's no way to "save" this for easy plug n play. I couldn't create a routine to auto switch my dp settings. The home screen layout for DeX on the simulated displays didn't remember any changes. However, the arrangement of the displays did save and was correct. I have no idea how this works on anything between 5.1 and 8.0. I'm still trying to find differences between phone 8.0 and tab 8.0.I really wish dragging and dropping windows and multi-desktops properly worked on phone 8.0 Multi control: I only tested samsung android devices. It does NOT work. You can't use it while in dexmode. You could go old school and just mirror your device and forego dex lol. There is 100% a minimum display width bug with phones. Restoring from backup (uncheck everything except settings) works immediately. It's frustrating for sure. Idk what it is. Works on One UI 5.1, bad on One UI 8.0.(I forget the actual android numbers). A solution to fixing it without just restoring from backup seems to be that if you adjust screen zoom settings it will "reset" (https://droidwin.com/fix-samsung-cannot-go-back-to-original-dpi-leave-tablet-mode/). A confusing thing i noticed is that the wallpaper that shows for the simulated displays will match the wall paper of the main device. However in settings, if you look at display arrangements, they will show the wallpaper of your dex display. Also if you change the wall paper on one of the simulated displays, this will change the wallpaper of the real dex display and not the simulated display. Also I can't tell what is actually happening with "home screen layouts" of the simulated displays. if I delete an icon, it appears to delete on others, but not the actually samsung dex. Very confusing. Thoughts: Techinically this could be expensive. I only even tried it because my work bought my 2nd monitor and plugable years ago. It's not a "on the go" solution. I think if Nexdoc or some other portable display company adds support for displaylink, they could start shipping "dual display" laptops (or 2nd display snap ons). The plugable that I have requires a wall power source. The phone/tab can't power it. Its phenomal that the only extra software needed is literally the DisplayLink Presenter app. That said...be sure to get a local copy and note what version you have that works. Things could change with any software update. This post was written with "Version 4.3.1.13 (e1a2cd553a7)" I would assume this will work with any phone/tablet with video out and a dextop mode. Not just because google put a dex into all of android but because the "2nd monitor" is just screen mirroring. Even without popup windows, there is still mouse over (although possibly not available everywhere). I need to test it with my LG wing. I also assume it would work with an iPad with stagemanger as well (I wish we had an active stagemanger fan group here like with Moto's ReadyFor and LG's Screen+) If there's a way in android to convert my native screen ratio to 16:9 or 16:10 or anything that isn't so tall, that would be phenomenal. I think you can do it with root + adb settings but I'd rather a developer option toggle or something. Even if it requires a restart. I need to test some more. I know with smart view wireless mirroring you can "Change the aspectratio of your pone to match the connected device" but I couldn't get smartview to "do the thing" when mirroring w displaylink (plus it was wired) because smartview cannot operate if samsung dex is active. I know "its just screen mirroring" but this has added tremendous value to my life for years. It might be just a smidge more useful than being able to loop dex back to your own phone screen via hdmi card reader but just look at the positive reaction to the trifold getting native dex when it is something fold user's have been begging for since launch (and other OEMs shipped!). If you read it this far, thank. let me know if there is anything you'd like me to test. It's 4:30AM for me (at writing) and my sleep schedule is insane bc of the newborn (1 day from 3weeks!!!) so I may respond something that doesn't fully make sense but just let me know and i'll update it when I get some more sleep lol I highly highly highly recommend a phone cooler. One of those cool gaming phone things, especially in the summers. It is imperative. New DeX Virtual Displays needs a lot of work. It's very confusing to manage and even more so when you throw in multiple monitors + simulated displays. I wish changing the display width gave us a taskbar like the pixel phones did. But anyways once it gets One UI 8.5 (officially) on the 2nd display, I'll have 1 virtual desktop with social media apps and another one with slack/gmail/chrome for work. Another with an andronix vm for linux (when i need it), termux, remo db, and kiwi browser for personal web dev stuff and a 4th with rdr or cod mobile for gaming. Im pretty much satisfied not using my tab s8u in this dual monitor setup. The screen is big enough with the distance I am from it. But for maximizing a little phone to dual displays is great. Tl;dr: You can do dual monitor support by having dex on one screen and mirroring your device on the other with a displaylinked adapter. We've all known this. Now you can also add up to 2 simulated displays (with their own virtual desktops on One UI 8.0 tablets) for even more productivity. All you need is a DisplayLink Plug and Display Supported Adapter. Edit: please excuse my "setup." This was a last minute decision to test and my desk and monitors were packed up and collecting dust while I'm on parental leave w a newborn. I promise I dont keep this stuff in the floor lol submitted by /u/Throwaway_09298 to r/SamsungDex [link] [comments]

What to do? Fix or get a new one?
Just wanna share this, this is my 2nd PSP from 12 years ago (model 3000 i believe). I remember I religiously played with it back in the summer of 2015 and 2016 after years of not playing with it since I used my laptop and iPad more. However, in 2016, I stopped playing with it around June because it was back to school, i got back to playing with it on October 2016 and I noticed that the L button stopped working for some reason and it’s weird because i never touched it. That’s why when I played SmackDown vs Raw 2011, I couldn’t run. And then in 2020, I learned that I can download games online, I just have to plug in my memory stick on a card reader and onto the laptop, which is why I got to play SvR 06. And then I have to stop playing with it again in August 2020 because it’s back to school. Come months later that time, I reunited with my PSP and I decided to download a bunch of wallpapers and the pilot episode of NXT from YouTube that runs about 40-50 minutes and put it in my PSP. i managed to do it, but that’s what I believe killed my PSP because when I put the memory stick back inside, it doesn’t power on, it does but with the charger plugged in, and then a day later, it stopped working. I hope it’s just the battery or something. If I can’t have this fixed I might just buy a new one. submitted by /u/PrinceRJC to r/PSP [link] [comments]

Once upon a time in Upstate New York....
Stupidthing wanted long title. Anyways, a while back someone made a post asking about irl experiences that left us with little doubt. My post was about a loaf of bread that was thrown, but I had forgotten about this until recently. A long while back, years at this point, I was headed out to visit some friends in Upstate New York, and of course, it would be when my train left that a massive winter storm had started to envelope the Midwest. When I boarded the train the air was heavy with flurries, and when I stepped off in Eerie, PA, a noreastern was swallowing the North East US. I was there for quite a while, and it seemed as though it must've gone on for weeks. Infact, I left to head to Providence, RI to see another friend for a week. I was suprised to find that there, the weather was pretty mild. It was chilly, but not harsh. There were occasional light flurries, and I woke up one morning to a shallow layer of fine baby powder snow. But, when I had returned to Buffalo, it seemed everything was still choked with winter's fury. My cab driver who was taking me from Buffalo to Fredonia, where this happened, spent the entire drive lamenting how this was nothing. When he was younger, he experienced a snow storm that swallowed people's houses whole. They had to drive snow mobiles from chimney to chimney and that was how they carried out rescue efforts. The year of never ending winter, he called it. I forget why I started going to work with my friend. Maybe it was that the house was cold at night. Maybe it was that i was there to visit him, and spending the night snowed into a trailer in Bemos Point, wasn't as exciting as a supposedly haunted, and historic hotel. He worked as the night shift receptionist at The White Inn. During the summer time it was often booked because of its rustic, cottagesque rooms. The wallpaper, furniture, and creek in the wooden floorboards would have reminded you of your grandmother's old house. But, in the winter time, especially in this snow storm, I think we only had a single guest. This worked out well, cause it gave us a lot of time to explore the Inn together. My friend loved this place, and he loved the paranormal. He seemed to really enjoy taking me on a tour into the building's old bones, abd on up to the presidential suite. Along the way telling me about the building's history, and someone the experiences guests have had. He mentioned that one night he was working alone, as per usual, and he would keep getting rings at the reception desk. Off to the side, of the reception area there was a small lounge, where we would sit, and listen to the wind howl outside. The night hus story took place, was no different. The phone would ring, and he'd go and check to see if there's Inn's only guest needed something in the middle of the night. He'd pick up the phone, and... there'd be nothing. Just silence on the other end. So heavy it seemed as though any moment a voice might come through and cause the the deafening abyss to collapse in on itself. Still, it would hang there, a bulldozer suspended from a spider's web, till after a few seconds my friend nonchalantly hang up. This was a fairly routine experience for him. Sometimes, he'd return to the lounge, and the moment he'd resume drawing in his sketch book, the night would again demand his attention with more ringing, only to reward his attentiveness with yet more silence. In the morning, the guest would check out early. He was a frequent customer, familiar with the Inn and it's histor. He asked my friend if a pipe broke in the middle of the night, and my friend responded with a, "No. Why do you ask." They guest had said, "There was a banging in the room above me all night. Then the sound as though heavy furniture was being pushed across the wooden floor." The room above him, was the presidential suite. As I mentioned, he would tell me stories while taking me on tours of the place, and sharing it's history. I want to say that at one point, the White Inn might've served as a hospital, or clinic, but last I tried to verify this, I couldn't find anything. However, after its first construction, the original house that was built caught firem. As we'd make our way through the fridgid basement though, you could see a change in foundation marking changes in the Inn's history. I try to remain objective when it comes to my own experiences, or the stories of others. Open minded, but with a healthy amount of skepticism. At one point in the Inn's history, and during it's mostly grizzly afair, it was a social club. People would gather to dance through the night in the ball room. It was here that I kept thinking as though I was seeing this electric ball of light big zig-zagging around out of the corner of my eye. I would choose not to form a conclusion on this, however, because to me, it seems just as likely that it could have been an ocular anomaly. I have a habbit of rubbing my eyes by pressing my thumb into them, near my tear ducts. I might have done this with out being aware, when we entered the ball room. The heat coming from the radiators smelled hot, and stale, as it might in an old house. In 1968, the then owner of the White Inn, Jack, was found dead. In the room next to his body his wife Helen was found, also deceased. Her skull bashed in with a book end. The story goes that Jack was suffering from depression, and after killing his wife, finished the his task on himself. Of course, this happened in room 272, the presidential suite. It is in 272, that I believe I had what might my second, but perhaps less, undeniable experience. To give an idea of when this happened, ghost tube, on YouTube, was barely a thing. The apple iPad was about to debut, we hadn't really transitioned over to smart phones as we have them today, and T.A.P.S. was still on TV. So, room 272, my friend and I sat on the edge of the bed. Just as I'd seen on TV, I started trying to provoke whatever might be there. Sometimes asking questions, sometimes talking shit. I had something similar to a Palm Pilot; a personal hand held computer, similar to a Blackberry, but not a phone. I don't think I captured anything on its recording. But while we sat there I thought I smelled a faint scent of smoke, which similar to earlier might've come from the heating. Though, it is said people might experience the smell of Jack's cigars. In the center of the room was a large chandelier, and what I felt was more convincing, was that it had started swinging. Not a gentle back and forth, but similar to someone pushing on it from one side. I wouldn't completely honest if I omitted another detail. If I remember correctly, there are trains that pass near by, and it is possible that the rumbling from the train may have contributed, but I don't recall there being a train at the time, and I didn't get anything on my recording. Aside from that, there was one final bit of eeriness, though this is more of a vibes thing. After my cab driver dropped me off at the Inn, I wanted to take a shower. I'd sat on a train for the better part of two days, and I needed to freshen up. So my friend had let me borrow a room, under the condition that I clean up after myself. Which, I did. It could just be that the room was cold, and I had gone from hot car, to cold walking up the front steps, to hot lobby l, to cold room; all while layered under a heavy winter coat, a hoodie, and a t-shirt. This was probly the first time in a couple days that I was able to shed the extra layers. The cold air on my skin may have tingled, and felt weird. But I remember feeling watched, and while I relaxed under the steamy shower head, I thought I felt hands lightly tracing their nails down one side of my back. Since then, the White Inn had changed ownership more than a couple times, I believe. Some owners seemed to embrace it's reputation, while others seemed to want to distance the Inn from being haunted. My friend has long since quit working there, and we've lost track of eachother. At one point, it closed, and remained closed for quite a while. But, at the end of last year, I saw a headline that said it was saved by the locals. If you'd like to know more about the place, I found this. https://www.phantomsandmonsters.com/2010/03/paranormal-mysteries-at-white-inn.html?m=1 submitted by /u/Olympic_Salad_Tosser to r/Ghosts [link] [comments]

I believe my home of 16yrs is haunted.
I am 21 years old and moved to Maine from The Keys when I was 5-years-old and have lived in the same old farmhouse since. I believe it is haunted but also that I could just be insane. Am I insane?? It was a big jump, to say the least. Not only were we 30-minutes from the ocean, which was much different from living on the shore, but the house was extremely old, too. Maine is a very cute state. Anyone who has seen it knows that it has a very quaint, peaceful awe to it. Much of its land, including its buildings are old and or historic, life tends to feel very slow and calm here. But residents of Maine know It's nature to be somewhat different sometimes. Maine, as well as all of New England for that matter, has a very strange feeling to it. Because it looks inviting, it almost feels scarier because it does not visually pose any immediate threat. I remember arriving to the house for the very first time. It was beautiful on the outside; tucked into large, bushy trees and pine with a river behind it. The property was huge, filled with rolling hills and trails that followed through tall pine. It was summer when we moved, and I remember believing the place was magical and that it might have had faeries. Mom and I walked around exploring the property while dad started taking things inside. I noticed how bright the world was. We could hear only the sounds of nature and the dimming voices of my dad and his buddies who came to help with the move. Early July, swarming with heat and the vibrant scent of orange daylilies. We took the path outback, following the tree line, to our left a field of overgrown grasses, large bushes of flowers and lupine shaded by a towering canopy of pine, birch and maple. The field was vast and empty for all but one crab apple tree. I wanted to go to it, but my mother warned me of ticks and that we should wait till the fields are mowed. The river was beautiful, and wrapped around 3/4 of the property's line. The woods were dense with clear trails, surrounded by pine, birch, maple, honeysuckle, golden rod, Queen Anne's lace twisting ferns and other wildflowers. My mother noticed a less visible trail that went across a small runoff from the river. We jumped over and climbed up a steep hill, to see beyond it a waterfall and a very old stone foundation. I asked what it was and she told me it must be a mill. At the time, I did not know what a mill was: she explained that our house and that this was somewhat common for Maine. We trekked down to it and it was beautiful. We discovered many things buried in the water and surrounding woods: pottery shards, bottles and two coins. We later brought them to our town's historical society and they told us that the original property was built in 1779 with a mill. The original property, other than the barn that still stands, was lost in a fire and the family moved. In 1891, a new house was built connecting to the barn which is the home we live in now. It was a really cool discovery and is what got me into studying history, which is now my major in college. Then, we went inside. It felt nowhere near as magical as outside: the windows were very tall with old warped glass, the hardwood floors creaked and something about it felt off. I cannot explain it with words: it is almost like it's breathing. My sister and I ignored it and explored the house, calling dibs on bedrooms. However, its old design had a particular quirk to it that I liked. The mudroom was also a sunroom, though very narrow and small. Filled with windows with glass so old it is warped. The crown molding has flowers in it, and the windows are tall so the home soaks up sunlight. Upstairs, the wallpaper in the hallway was a patterned-water color of rolling fields, farms and deer. It looked just like outside, only the colors were far more dull and earth toned, with a background of brown. Other than that, the house had been painted all white by the previous owner. Even so, I liked it; it somehow made it look sunnier and spacious. The white against the old hardwood floors cooled it down, and made it feel homey. But it still felt odd, almost like it was not truly our family's, similar to the feeling of walking into a business 30 minutes before close. Because of its age, it needed renovations. My father is a carpenter and paid two of his buddies to help the move and renovations. While they renovated, my family all stayed in one room while his buddies slept on an air mattress downstairs. That night, I had sleep paralysis. For context, I had never had troubles sleeping before and had never had sleep paralysis. That night was my very first experience with it: I dreamt that there were spiders crawling over me, and that I could not move. There was also a hand inside my mattress, reaching up and trying to pull me in. I woke up in a terror. My parents wrote it off as stress caused by the move. I had sleep paralysis and nightmares regularly in my bedroom (not the room we all stayed in after the move,) so much so that I started sleeping with my little sis. I remember the first night i went to sleep in her room: I had woken up from a nightmare and had to get water downstairs. The stairwell on the second floor has no windows, only 6 doors: four which lead to bedrooms, one storage closet and the small attic door. When I left my room, I remember feircly looking away from the darkest corner of the stairwell which led to my mom's office. When I reached the stairs, I looked across to the dark corner and saw a glowing orb. It was white with blue glowing spots. I was not afraid of it. More so, I was curious. I walked closer but eventually came to my senses and went back into my bedroom. I was frequent to nightmares, and as I got older I just wrote it off as sleepwalking. I have never seen anything like that in this house ever again. I was also about 6 and very imaginative; I had an imaginary friend. Though I never actually saw her. I only pictured her in my head. As I spent more time in the house, my sister and I noticed strange things about it. Here is a list of things that still go on to this day and singular strange events: if you listen closely, it sometimes sounds like someone is walking up and down the stairs at night. Up two steps, down three, up four, down two. The doors are all original so it is easy to hear when someone is actually on the stairs, this noise is far more subtle. when you get to the bottom of the stairs, it always feels as if someone is peering at you through the dark living room to the left. I sometimes close this door before night because it seriously weirds me out. Speaking of that room: We have always had dogs and its honestly not a frequented room. It is the second living room and has no TV. Two windows, a fireplace, couches, a table and some bookshelves. Though it looks comfortable, it does not feel it and I suppose that might partly be why it is less frequented than the main living room. We have always had dogs, and they have all taken a liking to the same spot in the room. It makes me less afraid, but is still strange to me. Back on this room: I did sleep in there once. I was very sick with strep throat during a storm and was reading all day on the couch. It was a nice way to escape my bedroom without having to listen to the TV in the other room. At night my father gave me nyquil. I was too exhausted to move and fell asleep in there. I had a nightmare and sleep paralysis that night. The nightmare was that a lady had been living in the room in secret, though I don't remember much of the details. When I had sleep paralysis, it was of someone's hand across my face. It was horrifying: i could barely see in the dark and could not move. I was 11 and still remember trying to scream and the fast pacing of my heart. Everyone who has ever been there finds the house creepy, even firm deniers of the paranormal. This especially goes for the land. The house is honestly very cute, but has a strange feeling to it that makes it creepy which is almost more ofputting than an outright scary looking place. It looks comfortable and safe but always feels like someone is watching you. Whenever my sister and I would have friends over, they wanted to go through the house at night in pairs. My best friend of 10 years refuses to go in the woods at night. My cousin and I once camped out back by the river but got too creeped out to fall asleep so we went back into my room and made a fort instead. In the eighth grade, my little sister and I had a slumber party camping outback when I saw something outside. Her and I are not far in age, so we get along quite well. Our birthdays are two months apart, so that year we had decided to celebrate them together in May and have a slumber party/bon fire/camp out. We camped by the river where the bon fire was built, which was far from the house and surrounded by trees. I went up to grab my ipad so we could play music and watch movies. When I walked back outside it was dark. I was frozen in the mudroom when I first saw it, staring through the warped windows. It looked like a man in a white tee shirt, pacing in circles. I couldn't make out distinct features but knew it wasn't my father because he was the only adult there to watch the fire. I stared at it pacing for what felt like minutes with a wrench in my chest. It was so dark I had questioned if what I was seeing was even true. I opened the door and stepped onto the porch to see it was still there, pacing. I went back out 20 minutes later with a flashlight. It was gone without any sign of ever having been there, not even shoe marks in the dirt path where it was pacing. When I went to college, I stayed in a dorm for a year. Campus was 30 minutes away, but I quickly fell into a depression and missed my family and dog. So, I started commuting. When I came back home, my sister had taken my old room. So, I had to move into the same room we had all stayed in for the first few weeks of the initial move-in. I started having sleep paralysis again. In three of the dreams, there were spiders in my bed. In two, someone was standing in the corner watching me as I slept. My cousin saw and heard something in the woods when we were playing manhunt. He believed he saw a woman with dark hair standing just behind the tree line. All gathered together in the field, the five of us watched the woods with a mix of focus and fear. For the first time, we weren't loud and cackling, just silent. Alek, the cousin who saw her, was begging to go inside and was pale from head to toe. We had never seen him like that before. So we all scrambled inside. Nobody saw anything, We all went inside after. I recently had my cousin over. I hadn't seen her in years due to her moving further down east. We had some wine and talked about all the times we had found the place to be creepy, as we were slightly creeped out. I told her about the dream when I was sick, and she went dead silent and got pale. I asked what was wrong and she confessed to having a very similar dream when she was a kid. I don't know if she is lying, but her reaction seemed genuine and she was never the type to lie. My dog knocks on the door by shaking the knob with his nose. One night I was on facetime with my boyfriend, who was aware that our dog does this. We both heard the knob shake and excitedly yelled my dog's name (every other time he had been there and happy to see me, its a frequent occurrance throughout the day with my goob, he loves to check in on everyone throughout the day.) I opened the door and he was not there. I searched but did not find him. It was strange to say the least. My boyfriend has never heard anything else on the phone other than a voice after id fallen asleep that exclaimed, "Ha!." He said it sounded like a man, but was quiet and he assumed it was my father outside in the hall. It could have been, but my dad does not laugh like that. Speaking of Goob (goob is a nickname, dont worry I didnt name my dog goob. But it would be fitting. He's really just a big white fluffball that came to life.) He is a pyranees and barks at night a lot. It's common for his breed, but sometimes I wonder if its something in the house. We have another dog, Bubba. He is also a farm dog and doesn't bark nearly as often, but sleeps snugged up to my dad all night. I have however, walked into rooms and seen moose cowering at a corner before and cheer up as soon as he noticed me. I presume it could just be because he is a rescue and had a very bad home life up until we adopted him. It started as soon as he moved in, was infrequent and doesn't happen as often anymore but still does. Bubba and Goob are best friends, brothers from another mother, and there has never been a territorial issue between them when it came to space in the house. Sometimes, it sounds like someone is pacing downstairs. The stairs are very loud and creaky and can be heard through all the doors upstairs. It sounds like stomping. It can be heard upstairs in the attic, too but I've only heard it once or twice ever. Sometimes i realize i never heard anyone go down. My sister had a sleep paralysis dream shortly after moving into my old bedroom when I moved out. It was of a little girl living in her room and getting scolded by her mother for something. She did not see anything and was facing the wall. She said she heard the voices somewhat loudly, as if they were in the corner. But her fan was also blaring next to her head. That is all I can think of right now. I have lived here for a very long time, so I have gotten used to a lot of it, sorry. Am I insane and is it all coincidental/placebo, or might it actually be haunted? submitted by /u/Key_Acanthisitta_574 to r/Ghoststories [link] [comments]

Time to make an important *final* decision.
Title explanation: They had to decide on whether to put closet rods in the closets, what flooring to go with, what paint color for the walls and what shape of sink to go with. For the closet rods Jess decided not to have rods. They are headed to a soccer game. Jess hasn’t vlogged a whole lot of soccer. She has mostly been doing short form content on her soccer mom life. Today they only have 1 game and it is local. It is Kaden’s game. Kaden is back in the goal. Kaden was a goalie for a long time and then decided he didn’t want to be a goalie anymore so they took him out of the goal. Kaden is now back in the goal and he likes it. Jess is so excited because this means 2 of her kids are now goalies. Landen and Kaden are goalies. Kyson was playing defender last season but now he is a striker. Yesterday Kyson got 4 goals and the first 3 within 10 minutes. It is such a season of change. All 3 of their teams are going through massive changes next year. Kaden and Kyson are going to move up to 11 v 11. Landen is moving up to 9 v 9. That means big changes within their teams. It is complicated. Last weekend they had 6 games, 3 on saturday and 3 on sunday. They were all over the place. Jess lives in northern california in the Sacramento area. They had a game in Sacramento, in Oakland 2 hours away and in Clovis 3 hours away. The one in Clovis made it 6 hours of driving for a 1 hour game. Then they had 2 more in sacramento. Now that Kaden and Kyson are aging up, Kyson's team is going to start real traveling next season as in states away. Jess is excited. This weekend is a break. They had 2 games yesterday both in town and today’s game is in town. Jess is feeling grateful for that. Jess is on a roll with cooking. Last night she tried a new recipe she found that was super easy. She loved it so much that she was craving it this morning. They didn’t have any leftovers so she is making it again. It is a new era for Jess. Jess even wants to start a garden. She took the sun dried tomato jar, poured the oil in the pan to fry an onion and garlic clove. Now she is chopping up the sun dried tomatoes to pour into the same pan. There are only 6 ingredients so it is really easy. Jess is taking a can of butter beans, draining it and dumping them into the pan. She also put in a handful of spinach and a cup of heavy whipping cream. You cook it for 10 minutes and mix it up. It is so good. She also put in a dash of salt and a little bit of oregano. Jess eats it with sourdough. It is so delicious. The kids are playing last to leave the trampoline. They have a pantry, pillows, extra clothes, food, water, and fanny pack with gum in it. Kaden has already left the trampoline. Addie has a paper phone and Kyson has a real phone. They also have popsicles. It is a warm day. Jess is happy because yesterday it was pouring rain and it was miserable. It is supposed to be beautiful and hot the rest of the week. Jess is so excited for summer. Addie has a friend from school. They are so cute every day. They exchanged information but the thing is Jess doesn’t know the parents. Addie added her friend on roblox. It is so cute because at school they are little best friends. Jess needs to meet the friend and arrange something. Addie and the friend keep wanting to talk on the phone or on the ipad. However they both know that they are not allowed to because the parents don’t know each other. (so why not meet the parents then? My parents did when I had school friends.) They often send notes home with each other with their parents phone numbers. Addie will write down Jess’s number and give it to the friend and the friend will write her mom’s phone number down and give it to Addie. Jess is finally trying to connect them. The friend drew a picture of what her roblox avatar looked like. Addie and the friend are resourceful. It is teacher appreciation week this week. It is Sunday and the week starts tomorrow. Jess is ordering a bunch of things overnight to give to the kid’s teachers. They have so many teachers and not including the middle school kids. Jess thought it would be a cute idea to make a clear tote bag and put a few things in it like a candle, a cup, alani energy drink, and a crumble cookie. Jess will put it all in this bag and have the kids bring it to school tomorrow. Jess is overnighting a lot of the stuff so she is hoping that it will arrive by 8am. Jess made a gift idea collage for instagram with a link to her gift idea list on amazon. Jess is going to attempt to get some painting done in the guest bathroom. She is intentionally taking her time with it. She has told herself not to rush this project. Jess tends to rush her projects and it stresses her out. There is no timeline for the project so she just does it as she can. Today the rest of the day happens to be a chill day so Jess is putting her painting clothes on and see how much she can get done. Jess has been going back and forth on this project so much. At one point she wanted to do wallpaper but wallpaper is complicated to deal with and it will be so moist in there. Jess has dealt with so much wallpaper in the past and it is such a pain to take down that Jess decided to paint. Jess changes her mind by the minute. Jess now wants to hand paint the whole thing. In the meantime Jess is going to take away the paint on 2 walls and if she still dislikes it take it off on the third wall. Addie has her painting clothes on to help paint. Jess put the project on pause to have family dinner. They are making tacos. Landen was with mimi this weekend and it snowed. Mimi just brought home snow. Mimi is throwing snowballs in the house. Next day The ADU already feels quieter inside. Drywall is going up in 2 days. Then it will be another inspection. They have the internet ready to drop in so as soon as the drywall is in they can install it. They are checking the progress on the ADU. It doesn’t look like it but things have come really far along. Everything is insulated, electrical is in, and the drywall is about to go up. Things are going to go fast from that point. They also insulated underneath the bathtub so that the water will stay warmer longer. The bathtub is filled because they had an inspection a few days ago. They had to make sure there were no leaks. Mixtiles isn’t sponsoring this video but they are a company that Jess loves. Jess has had real life friends ask about it. They had to make final decisions. They are little things you forget about until you build a home. Things like whether you want a closet rod in the closets. Typically you would say yes but in this case because the 2 bedrooms are spare bedrooms and might be used for storage they said no. Jess would much prefer putting a closet system in the closets. Jess would put modular closets in there. Because they no longer have a garage it is likely the two closets could end up as storage. Another decision was regarding what kind of flooring to go with. They haven’t picked the color yet but they are going to. They picked a paint color for the walls. They need to decide the shape of the sink like whether to have a square sink or a round sink. It is about a month and a half until they are done. Honey used to be so small. The viewers informed Jess that Honey is not done growing and has another year at least. One thing they need to do is get Honey groomed. Jess is trying to decide between taking Honey to a place or a mobile groomer. Because Honey is a particular breed Jess wants to make sure it is done properly. Jess has started the google searches. Honey has recently started to get little mats in her fur. It is inevitable for long haired dogs but that tells Jess it is time to take Honey to a professional groomer. submitted by /u/TaskSilly1477 to r/jesssfam_snark [link] [comments]

Today is Apollo for Reddit's last day, and I just released its last update. 🥹 I just wanted to say a big thank you to the folks who have used and supported Apollo over the years, it's been the dream of a lifetime to build this app over the last 9 years. ❤️ Read the eulogy inside! ❤️
Hey all, With that, Apollo's last update has landed! It includes: Some fun easter eggs! Tidies some things up for the closure later today Adds more wallpapers to the “Goodbye Apollo” wallpaper set Adds the option to export your Pixel Pals to the separate Pixel Pals app, and gives you a fun easter egg for doing so (or if you download the app while having Apollo installed) Eulogy I’ve stared at this empty text editor for like an hour now, and I really don’t know how to even start this post. It feels like summer camp as a kid when it’s the last day and everyone is remembering how much fun we had together, while also trying to fight back the emotion of things coming to a close. So I just really want to say thanks. I set out to build Apollo right out of university and an Apple internship, and wanted to create a Reddit app so good it felt like Apple themselves built it. The initial version was a little rough, but the community grew and grew, and people kept providing such phenomenal feedback that shaped the app into something absolutely unique that was enjoyed by so many people over the years. It feels disingenuous on the surface to say “I want to thank all of you”, but in this case it’s demonstrably true. I’ve worked on this app for over 9 years, and I’ve never felt burned out, I get such a crazy amount of energy and enjoyment out of building something so publicly alongside such an awesome community, and you seriously have no idea how easy product development is when your north star is just “listen to what people are saying”. So much less guesswork, A/B tests, focus groups, stress, when instead you just talk to people every day and listen. It’s hard to believe I’ve made almost 20,000 comments in this subreddit! I’m really heartbroken with how this whole process unfolded, I truly drank the Kool Aid talking to Reddit at the beginning that this was something they were going into in good faith with the interest of developers, moderators, and the community as a whole, but as many people pointed out to me, it’s clear now that ultimately wasn’t their intent. If they wanted something that could work for everyone, they would have simply made an effort to listen, instead of being dishonest, callous, and punitive in pricing. I’m sorry to all the folks who, like me, lost Apollo abruptly as a result of this. I had so much more I wanted to do with this app! But, legitimately, I really feel a sense of that “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” right now. I grew up so much developing Apollo, I met and learned from so many incredible people, made lifelong friends, got to go to multiple WWDCs and was even featured in a few, and I got to work on a product and platform I absolutely loved for 9 years. That’s an incredible run, and it’s hard to feel anything but thankful for that. Other Things Here are some other random things I wanted to take a chance to mention! And hopefully none of it sounds too shill-y, I tried to get a Raids Shadow Legends or Squarespace sponsorship now that my main app is gone, but in the absence of that, I wanted to point out some of the other things I’m working on that you can support me in if you like what I’ve built and are able to, it would really mean a lot to me! ❤️ Update Apollo! This last update includes some fun stuff, easter eggs, migration tools, and a fun mode for the app that automatically enables when I delete my API token later tonight Check out the “Goodbye Apollo” Wallpaper set! It’s 20+ incredible wallpapers by Apollo icon designers, so you’ll be able to remember Apollo for years to come. I’m so proud of how it came out. It’s available in the app, but you can also just buy it online too if you want! Download my Pixel Pals app! It takes the really fun pixel pals functionality in Apollo and makes it into its own separate app with a ton more fun features to customize your iOS device with. It’s now my only app really, so it would mean a lot to me if you considered supporting it! (There’s also a secret easter egg for Apollo users!) If you have time left on a monthly or yearly subscription, please consider declining the automatic refund! These refund costs are paid out-of-pocket by developers and while the small amount left might not matter a lot to you, multiplied across a big user base like Apollo’s, it gets painfully expensive. Cancelling your subscription or deleting the app is not enough, you have to download Apollo and manually decline the refund, otherwise it’s automatically given to you. The costs really hit me out of nowhere, a month ago Reddit was still being promising with claims of equitable API pricing, and 4 months before that they said they had no plans to change the API this year. Beyond that, some people have asked if they can tip jar me directly, and I’m Canadian so unfortunately no Venmo/Cashapp, but I do have PayPal! Apollo merch is also available! For a short time left, you can use code "RIP" Apollo to get 10% off plus free shipping, they're legitimately very comfortable shirts. The mythical iPad app is something I was so excited to be able to push out the door, and has been the hardest programming challenge of my career. While it won't get to see the light of day unfortunately, I did want to take the chance to share some details with you about it. Here's a picture that definitely shows its roughness, but represents what I was going for. I was really inspired from the outset by Loren Brichter's Twitter for iPad app over a decade ago before I could even code. You have these stacks of content that just effortlessly stack on top of one another so even if you've gone down a deep rabbit hole of content you can easily keep track of things. Anyway, I just really wanted to write a final post to say a big thanks to the community who used Apollo over the years, it's been the journey and dream of a lifetime working on Apollo, and whatever I do next, be it Pixel Pals, or another thing all together, I'll do my best to make it measure up to Apollo! I'm not sure if I'll be sticking around on Reddit much beyond this week, but I'm on Twitter and Mastodon if you want to keep in touch wth me! - Christian EDIT: Looks like Reddit pulled the plug a little early. Apollo started crashing, but I just manually revoked my token and it looks like it fixes the crashing, but no more Reddit access haha. Those folks are fun to the very end! 😛 In a few hours the app will transition automatically to a fun commemorative mode. submitted by /u/iamthatis to r/apolloapp [link] [comments]

My Niece is Freaking Me Out
I thought finally coming home for the holidays was going to be a good thing. I haven't seen my sister or her kids in almost two years, and I hated missing out on all the important bits of their lives. So this Christmas I was going to be vaccinated and boostered and tested and whatever else I had to do to get to see them. Fortunately it all went smoothly and I got there in time for the big Christmas eve dinner. Normally I can be a little awkward about eating - I have very sensitive gums and fake teeth and have to eat my own pureed stuff - but my sister has the same medical condition so everybody is used to it. The doctors never figured it out and we got picked on a lot as kids, so it's such a relief being around people who don't stare as you chug protein. Besides, the focus was all on my niece and nephew. Luke, my older nephew, was trying to be cool. He's ten now, almost a teen and it's starting to show. Cool haircut, cool sweatpants, cool shoes. He desperately wants everyone to know he's an adult. It honestly made me kinda sad, how I'd missed out on the last of him being just a kid. Fortunately Alice, his sister, is only six and she's still hopped up on the magic of Christmas. I'll admit I was playing favorites, spending more time with her and her Legos than with Luke, but he just wanted to play Fortnite on his phone with his friends anyway so I didn't feel too bad about it. Alice had plenty to tell me. About school over zoom and playdates with friends - I let the words wash over me like a warm hug. This was so much better than a little box on my computer. But then as we finished assembling one of her Christmas presents, she started asking me if I remembered when I was a kid. How Alice would come to my window to make sure no one was awake. Then sneak inside, in the dark, and watch me sleep. I barely stifled a "what the fuck?" It didn't make any sense. My sister and I are pretty close together in age, Alice was twenty years away from being born when we were kids. How could she have watched us sleep when we were children? She said it super nonchalant, too, mostly focused on her legos. "Well?" she asked, "do you remember?" I decided to play along. "How could I remember if I was asleep?" "You didn't stay asleep," she told me. She said she watched me and my sister, her mom, for hours. She described our wallpaper - pink clouds our mom left up for way too long - and our pajamas - a big shirt of my dad's for me, and some ugly plaid thing for my sister - and our toys - I was obsessed with micro machines at the time. When she said that something tinkled in the back of my mind. Like, literally, I thought there was a bell in the next room going off. The wisp of something came back to me - a feeling, of being young, and a little awake but mostly asleep, and knowing, *knowing*, that something else is in the room... "And then I woke you up," she said, and she put the last lego brick in its spot. "Finished!" she shouted, and she scooped up her spaceship and ran off making laser sounds. I left her and went to the kitchen. I needed water, or maybe a stiff drink. My sister was in there putting together some leftovers, so I told her about what her daughter had said. She just laughed it off. "Oh she's always telling weird stories. And we were looking through those old photos - I'm sure she just saw an old polaroid and combined it with some nightmare and told you." I accepted the explanation, because anything else sounded crazy. She was just my little niece and I loved her dearly. Full stop. The afternoon was back to the usual, lounging around, watching Christmas movies and football. I even let Alice cuddle with me on the couch without getting the heebie-jeebies. We took a family photo at the end, to remember being back together after so long apart - me and my sister with our tight, closed smiles, the kids and her husband smiling with their big, beautiful teeth. Alice's adult teeth had just come in, and the dentist said they looked good, though she should be careful to floss because there were already signs of cavities forming. I had been so glad once we knew the kids didn't inherit whatever we'd had - I didn't want them to have to deal with the shit we did. So when she asked me to put her to bed that night, I said yes and was mostly excited about it. I read to her from one of her new books about a horse detective for a chapter or two and then went to turn out the light. "Wait Aunt Jo," she said, "I want to tell you a story." I figured she was just stalling for more time before bed. "Okay, what book should I get out?" "It's not a book," she said. "It's what happened after I woke you up." It was like electricity through my spine. I wanted to run out of the room but I couldn't move. Alice sat there in bed, staring at me, and just kept talking, and I couldn't stop her. Outside her window it was dark, with lazy snow falling, and it felt like we were the only two people in the entire world it was so lonely. She explained that she'd actually been watching me and my sister for years before it was time to finally wake us up. She didn't explain why it was time, just that it was. One night, after creeping in through the window and sitting in the dark and watching us sleep and listening to us breathe, she reached out and gently shook my shoulder. I sweat, right then, in her bedroom, I could feel that hand, hot and heavy and sticky on my shoulder, shaking me awake. "Rise and shine love of mine," Alice said but it wasn't her voice, it was a deep, gravelly voice, one that echoed through time and back to my own childhood bedroom when I woke from slumber and a shadow loomed over me, backlit by the window, the words carried on a sweet, warm breath, like the decaying leaves outside my window - it was autumn then, I remembered that suddenly, it was autumn and we'd be going trick-or-treating in a few weeks and I would be the headless horseman and I couldn't wait, I was so excited, and then he came and woke me in the night -- "And then what Alice?" I asked, but she was asleep, curled up on her bed. I was tempted to wake her and demand answers but then I remembered that hand on my shoulder, and I had to get out of the room. I stumbled downstairs to where my sister and her husband sat watching It's a Wonderful Life. "Sounds like she went down easy," my sister said but I didn't answer. I went to the kitchen and got down the wine and a glass and sat there and drank. But the image lingered with me, the tall shadow, leaning down towards childhood me, rousing me, talking to me before I had time to scream -- I called our mom. There's a reason she wasn't at our Christmas - when we lost our teeth, she started making it all about her, how we were ruining her life. Finally she divorced our dad and started over with a new husband and kids. We only talked occasionally, when someone died or if she needed money. But right then I needed something from her. By the slight slurring in her groggy hello I could tell she'd been hitting the wine longer than I had. I skipped pleasantries. "When we were kids," I asked her, "did someone break into our house?" She had no idea what I was asking about and I had to repeat myself a few times. Finally she got defensive. "Oh, now you're blaming me for that? I told you both a million times, you girls were perfectly safe. Those kids were on the other side of town, the poor side. Nothing bad was going to happen to you. Or at least, no scary man was going to take you. You girls used to have such beautiful smiles." But I was still on the first part of what she'd said. "What man?" I demanded, but even as I asked I started to remember. That summer there'd been stories of kids going missing, from the other side of town. Taken from their bedrooms. Everybody was freaked out. But by the fall it had stopped, and then that winter they'd caught him... "After he stopped taking kids you started telling those stories of him being in your room. You'd come screaming into our bedroom but of course we'd look and no one was there, everything was locked up tight. When they finally electrocuted him I said an extra prayer for him to burn in hell for the way he got you two riled up. I swear you girls needed to be the center of attention, well you got what you wanted when your teeth all --" I hung up on her. I'd heard it enough times before. Her theories on why it had happened to us. What we'd done to deserve it. I went to bed without talking to anybody. I was sleeping down in the basement, on a pullout. Other nights I had no problem sleeping down there but that night I couldn't close my eyes for more than a few moments before becoming sure someone else was in the room. What were those shadows passing by the windows? The creaking in the corner of the room? Had it returned, this forgotten thing from my childhood? Or had Alice gotten up in the middle of the night, quietly made her way down the stairs into the basement, and now stood in the corner, watching me, like she'd claimed to have watched me all those years ago before I was born... But every time I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight there was nothing and no one there. I was alone. The next day I was heading out. Normally I would linger and make up excuses to stick around but not that morning. I wanted to get home. Back to somewhere safe and familiar and away from Alice. I avoided the kids all morning, eating breakfast quickly and then going for a walk to get coffee. I wanted to be nice and caffeinated for the long drive back. But I couldn't skip goodbyes. What was I going to say, "you're creeping me out kid"? It was a quick hug and then I'd be out the door and I could forget all about it. First I hugged Luke and he thanked me for his ipad and I told him to keep drawing. Then I knelt down to give Alice her hug. I wanted to get in and out but as her head burrowed into the crook of my neck I felt her breath on my ear, the same as I had all those years ago in my childhood bedroom. "I want you to know, I still have the teeth I took from your mouth," she said, just loud enough for only me to hear. I slowly pulled back, staring at her in horror. I must have looked insane to the others but I grabbed Alice and shook her. "What do you mean? What did you do with them?" And she just grinned at me, nice and wide with her big, beautiful smile of healthy new adult teeth. "Where do you think my teeth came from?" submitted by /u/donotshare to r/nosleep [link] [comments]

Apollo 1.10's massive iOS 14 update with Widgets support, including a bunch of awesome, beautiful, customizable home screen Widgets, Picture in Picture Video, new Photo Picker (and more!) is now available for download on Day 1 of iOS 14! 🥳 Details inside!
Hey all, I've slept 2 hours of the last 36 but the iOS 14 update for Apollo is now available, and it's a doozy! I know a lot of you are going to be like "Wait, didn't 1.9 JUST come out?" and yeah, you'd be right, but like a good developer I've been working hard at Apollo's iOS 14 update at the same time. It had so many goodies in it that there's no way I wanted to miss the launch excitement, even if the date did surprise me a little bit! WIDGETS!! The most exciting part of iOS 14 (to me) is the new home screen Widgets Apple introduced, they're so much fun and really bring the home screen alive with a bunch of creative awesomeness. I wanted Apollo to take FULL advantage of everything widgets had to offer, with a ton of awesome, super customizable widgets. Here's a quick video showing an overview of them in the Widget Gallery: https://i.imgur.com/auwt1kb.gifv Apollo's iOS 14 Widgets include a variety of post feed Widgets, with the option to showcase single important posts or an overview of a feed. In addition to this there's a specific rich photo version that rotates through wallpapers from photo-heavy subreddits of your choosing, like photography subreddits, animal, nature, etc. Whatever you like! There's also a subreddit shortcuts widget, that makes it super easy to jump to whatever subreddits you want, right from your home screen. All these widgets are super customizable, you can change them to show whatever feeds you want and they'll update with fresh content continuously right on your home screen. It's seriously so cool having beautiful rotating wallpapers embedded right into your home screen, or an overview of the best posts from your favorite subreddit. And to boot there's also two fun widgets around Jokes and Showerthoughts, where it'll show funny jokes to brighten up your day, or interesting thoughts that give you pause and make you ponder deeply. Picture in Picture Video iOS 14 brought Picture in Picture video to the iPhone, in addition to how it was previously on the iPad. Now with Apollo if you're playing an interesting video someone uploaded to Reddit, and you get a new message, you can just swipe away from the media viewer to continue watching the video as you respond to the message. It's seriously awesome. This is effectively the initial version of this in Apollo, currently it works by enabling the audio for the video and then swiping to your home screen. In a future version I'll add even further support so it can float around while you're using Apollo! New Photo Picker One of my favorite parts of iOS 14 is the new Photo Picker Apple built and is asking developers to use. Apple had a simpler version for years, but the version for developers lacked creature comforts like being able to select multiple images. Now no longer, it's fully featured, and awesome. Why does Apple want developers using it? Privacy! With the new photo picker, it's siloed off into its own process by iOS, so after presenting developers are unable to see any of your photos as you scroll through them. As a result, if you want to upload a single image you no longer have to grant the app access to your entire iOS device's photo album going back a decade. You instead select the photos you want, and the corresponding app gets ONLY those photos, and nothing more. Apollo now fully supports this. It's seriously great and I hope more apps integrate it. Potential Bugs/Issues The release coming so soon this year admittedly surprised me a tiny bit, so I stayed up all last night finishing up the update so you all could have it on day one. I know Reddit users are a tech savvy bunch so they tend to update quickly, and I didn't want to leave you out to dry. As a result of me rushing a bit though, I'm willing to bet there's a few bugs in there, but bear with me and I'll be fixing them as fast as I possibly can. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's much, but if you come across a rough edge don't be too hard on me, just report it through the app and I'll do my best to fix it up lickity split! I already have an update I hope to submit tonight with some fixes for some bugs people found. It's possible there's some bugs around signing in too, if you have any issues where you get signed out or anything, let me know. If it happens, it should only happen once and then it'll fix itself up, but keep me posted! Apollo 1.9 Like I said, Apollo 1.9 just came out less than a week ago, so you might have missed it and there's an absolute ton of stuff in there as well around crossposts, flair, translation features, icons, and more, so if that's news to you, check out the update thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/irfi1c/apollo_19_is_now_available_for_download_beautiful/ Thank You! Seriously! It's been an awesome summer and I have so much fun working on Apollo, even if it means being sleep deprived every so often haha, I genuinely appreciate the support you all give me so much and I just really love my job and want you to know that. I'm a one person team and if you're enjoying the update, leaving a tip in the app's tip jar (or by PayPal to tipjar @ apolloapp.io) seriously helps so much with continued development on Apollo. After making sure iOS 14 is all tidy I'll be back to work on the iPad update! - Christian submitted by /u/iamthatis to r/apolloapp [link] [comments]
