I know this is an oddly specific question, but where I grew up (Ontario), the car camping sites I visited were either packed dirt, or they'd be gravel but would have a raised square of packed dirt as the tent pad. You push a stake into the dirt, maybe fiddle with it a bit if you strike a hard stone on the way down, done, same as backcountry camping. Here, car campsites seem to always be hardpacked coarse gravel, so there's pretty much no chance of sticking a traditional tent stake through it. I know these sites tend not to be windy, but I still want to stake my tent so that the floor doesn't crumple inwards (and some tents need staking just to stand up). My questions are How does one stake a tent on it? Any recommendations for particular stakes that do the job? Do you just find large rocks to tie rope to? Why?? There's no electrical hookup, these sites aren't hosting heavy RVs, so why the gravel? If it's needed to avoid erosion, then why coarse gravel rather than fine stuff? Does it strengthen the spirit of Islanders to have us sleep on—and walk barefoot on—jagged rocks? I imagine there has to be a good reason. Thanks! Edit: Lots of good suggestions, thanks. I'm camping on a gravel site soon and there's plenty of rain and wind due for this weekend. The last time I camped on gravel I had a very hard time getting my tent's stakes (small skinny metal things) into the ground and same with my rain fly. This time I'm bringing camping poles to make an A-Frame with a tarp as my rain fly does a poor job - so my minimum number of successful stakes-in-the-ground just tripled basically. I bought some serious stakes but they're much bigger than I anticipated. Thicker and 10 inches long. I was aerating my lawn and one of the sides got clogged, so I tried hammering a tent stake to remove the clog but now that’s stuck. I first tried hammering a knife honing rod against the tent stake from the bottom without any luck, so then I sprayed some WD40 on it and tried again, but still nothing. It was only $400. It took like 2 minutes and less than 100 pumps to inflate. The main reason I decided to try this tent is because the whole thing fits into a large duffle bag, vs my camping cube requires an ez up tent that takes up the front and back right seat of my car. It looked bigger in the pictures but I can still stand inside and I’m 6’ 3”. The tent stakes it comes with are kind of cheap so I’d probably bring better ones in the field. I think it could fit two twin air mattresses no problem. It has a port in the ceiling for a wood burning stove. I’m going to leave it in the back yard for about a week. We were already planning on getting a fuel canister at our destination, I bought folding trekking poles, and I was shopping for mini scissors. But I just read that TSA doesn’t allow tent stakes?! Edit: This is a trip to Catalina, which is unfortunately a very expensive trip to have to cancel due to lost/confiscated baggage. Edit 2: We’ve decided to check one bag (with knife, tent stakes, trekking poles, and tent poles) and use the other as a carry on.
