Heads up for people traveling in the states
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is suspending the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs as a partial government shutdown continues. The programs are designed to help speed registered travelers through security lines. Suspending them could cause headaches for fliers. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that "shutdowns have serious real world consequences." She also said that "TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts." submitted by /u/Longjumping_College to r/travel [link] [comments]

When your vacation starts with an iPhone notification that an unknown air tag has been traveling with you.
I’ll keep it simple. *my best friend married a narcissist almost 10 years ago. The relationship was abusive and it took her years to leave. *when she wanted to move out of state because she couldn’t afford the COL, he won primary custody — claiming that it’s in their child’s best interest to stay put. *3 days after the custody order was given, he notified her that he was also moving out of state. *Her ex goes to great lengths to make her life a living hell even living a few hours apart. He has also tried to surveil her conversations with their son, stretching the limits of the custody order. *since I have an iPhone, I received the “unknown air tag” near you notification and was able to track it down. We found it in his insole. Last four of the phone number match her ex-husband’s new wife. submitted by /u/Content-Bathroom-434 to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

3 weeks traveling around Oman, my new favorite country in the world
Just finished a 3 week trip around Oman and focused the trip on exploring the 3 main mountain ranges of the country; the Dhofar mountains near Salalah, the Ash Sharqiyah mountains in between Sur and Muscat, and the Hajar mountains north of Nizwa. We did this trip entirely independently and self drove the whole way. The only time we hired guides was for the canyoneering and camping. Salalah has a rainy season from June through early September where everything turns bright green and waterfalls flow all over the place. It was absolutely stunning to see these massive cliffs right on the ocean covered in deep green plants everywhere. There are tons of waterfalls, hikes, caves, beaches, and epic views to discover here. We went camping in the Empty Quarter for a night during our time in Salalah. We hired a guide to take us since we didn’t bring any camping gear. Our guide took us to a frankincense farm, then drove us out into the dunes and set up camp on the sand. He cooked camel stew for dinner and it was delicious. It was dead quiet at night and the stars were incredible. After 4 nights in Salalah (which isn’t nearly enough), we flew to Muscat and rented a car and drove straight to Tiwi, where we spent the next week. We spent our week here going canyoneering, and it was absolutely incredible. We hired guides for this. We explored 4 different canyons and they each had their own beautiful parts to them. We did Wadi Mibam, Wadi Shab, Wadi Taab, and Wadi Al Arbeieen. We also explored Sur a bit which is a nice coastal city. We enjoyed visiting the local supermarket (basically the same thing as a Walmart supercenter) and it was fun seeing the products we typically see made with pork being made with turkey or chicken or beef. We then drove the long way around by the Bidiyah Sands and Nizwa to get to Al Hamra, where we spent the next few days. Nizwa is gorgeous and has an amazing old fort and ancient neighborhood to explore. Al Hamra has 400 year old ruins and an amazing museum located in a 400 year old house that you get to explore which was very cool (Bait Al Safah is the museum name). We also explored the Bahla Fort, the biggest fort in Oman, and Al Hoota cave here. We ended our trip with a few days in Muscat. We visited the Sultan Qaboos mosque which is stunning, the mall of Oman and mall of Muscat which are both impressive, the Seeb Souq (which is the cheapest place to buy saffron and dates in Muscat), and the Muttrah Souq for souvenirs. Overall, I absolutely love everything about Oman. It’s an incredibly beautiful, unique, and special country. The people are so kind, the scenery is out of this world, there’s endless gorgeous nature to explore and adventures to have, the food is delicious, the country is very clean and well developed and maintained, everyone cares to take care of their country which I really respect. We spent 17 days in Oman and it wasn’t nearly enough. It would take a lifetime to explore everything this country has to offer. I already plan on going back in the next few years to see more! Costs: overall pretty cheap coming from California. All prices are in USD. Hotels were around $80-$100 for a nice hotel. You can find budget hotels for $35-$50 a night. Food is around $3 to $8 per person, depends what kind of restaurant you go to. $3 at a local restaurant gets you a good amount of meat, tons of rice, and a small simple salad. We rented a car the whole time for about $75 a day and gas costs around $2.20 a gallon. There were some entry fees for the forts, a little high at $10 or so per person. The guides we hired were around $100 a day. Logistics : it was very easy doing this trip independently. Pretty much everyone speaks at least basic English, all of the important road signs are in English, the roads are very high quality and people drive the same as they do back home in the US. I self booked everything online or a few things through WhatsApp. Oman is one of the safest countries in the world, actually far safer than the US, so we felt very safe the entire time. There is basically no public transportation in the country so you need to rent a car or hire a driver to see the best parts of the country. Got an Evisa online in minutes. Overall super easy to travel around! I really highly recommend visiting! Happy to answer any questions submitted by /u/olliecakerbake to r/travel [link] [comments]

AITAH for telling my wife she makes traveling no fun.
Edits/Clarification at bottom So my wife (38f) and I (36m) have been together 8 years. We live in my home state of Arkansas, she is from San Diego. Every year she wants to visit home, we used to fly but since we have a kid (2f) she now wants to drive. I have no problem using all my vacation days for this, she lives here. Traveling is a pain because she overpacks. Used to fill my CX-7 FULL, but work gave me a $900 car allowance and we used that to get a full size Surburban. This time she loaded THAT full. I mean front passenger to the ceiling so I can't see the mirrors full. We didn't use hardly any of it. Every stop I carried everything into the hotel because she was afraid it would get stolen. It's 3 days each way Got through it, told her she makes traveling miserable because she is also super late. Tell her 10am. She might arrive by noon. So Every day we don't leave the hotel until 12, then she insists we drive until midnight, ugh, unfun Anyway. This weekend I was sent on a work conference. They got me a sweet hotel room, week at a nice resort, super excited. We were going to go and leave the baby. Day before she cancels my mom watching to bring our child. Fills the suburban full, again. Mind you, it's my work trip. 5 days, 5 nights Most of the stuff was just over packing. She brought a tote of blankets. One of towels. Two of her clothes! Totes!! I told her she makes it miserable (the hotel always gets cluttered and full, the night before we leave is always a mess trying to pack and her "organizing" stuff she brought that never gets used. She freaked out, told me i just want to go hook up and cheat at these things (I invited here) and she is filing for a divorce because I told her "your overpacking and insisting we fill every vehicle full and always being late makes me.miserable".. we were 3 hours late leaving to get to the conference, so I missed the networking opening night which is where in my industry people tend to clic up afterwards to a degree. I missed going to the best vendor events, etc, because she insisted that I don't leave because she was overwhelmed with how messy the hotel room was. (Mind you, it was all the stuff she brought, took out of totes, and never used, and the toddler then destroyed. AITAH? Edits Yes I am involved in raising our child. I actually packed for our trip, I had one bag for baby to go to mom's (toys, diapers, food, etc). A big bag but one large suitcase. I had a bag packed for wife and one for me. Yes, she had ADHD She always says she doesn't want to do this, then trip comes and she does it. I am not a cheater. She accused me of it last time I went solo. I am exhausted. If she left me I think I would be done with relationships, my own mental health is wrecked My boss wasn't mad, he found the whole thing hilarious when I told him. He skipped half of the conference himself. My job wasn't threatened, but to me it was. I tried the whole packing thing for her and me. I have tried to just accept her issues, but it's gotten worse. When we first got together it was she needed a large checked bag for a 2 day trip to Las Vegas. Now she needs an entire suburban for a week trip. One of issues is the vehicle is so full. If it was just the back, I might be able to deal. But it's so full I can't even see the side mirror.. I've expressed how unsafe that is and she doesn't care just yells that I don't understand Yes she comes from a hoarder background submitted by /u/Ok-Cut-9597 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]

We are too obsessed with traveling
Travel is the Millennial version of "keeping up with the Jones". People like to poke at Boomers for their obsession with lots of toys and possessions, but Millennials / Gen Z have their own obsession with checking off the experience and places been bucket list, and it's every bit as unbalanced. 1. Travel funnels experiences. The classic argument for travel is that it broadens people's experiences in life, but does it really? There's some truly adventurous folks who go far away and really wonder off the beaten path - but by and large, when people go beyond the weekend 2 hr drive range, they stick to "best of" lists. Although there's something exotic to far away locations, travelers are really just experiencing all the same sights and experiences as everyone else traveling. National Parks are the prime example. We each have our own special "side of the pond" on this planet earth with the radius around where we live. Let's explore the uniqueness of our own section of the world instead of swimming over to check out all the already crowded popular spots on other shores. 2. Do we need more experiences? I truly question if anyone these days is actually understimulated? It seems to be the opposite, where people are stressed, anxious, and overcommitted. Millennials have already had way more experiences in their lifetime already than what humans throughout history have had, how many more experiences does a person need? If people really wanted exposure to different worldviews, they would go talk to the immigrant next door and ask them about their home country and life. What it does seem that we need more of is social connection and relationships. But travel gets in the way of building those. 3 days of work minimum for each flight - time to research and book, time in transit, and time to recover / do laundry etc when you're back. That's 3 days you are not out socializing. And we wonder why we have problems retaining freindships? 3. Locals don't really want tourists. Sure the people visiting are enjoying their experiences, but are the locals enjoying your presence? I don't have to post links here, you see it on your news feed with headlines like: "People in Maui were brought up to resent tourists", "Italian official calls tourists 'vandals' after bad behavior", "Record traffic and lines getting into Zion"... True, tourists bring money, but it's simply a chore / job catering to them, unless it's in a location sparsely visited, which sadly is not where most people go. Not all exchanges have to have this guest / servant type of behavior. Take art - buying or experiencing a piece of art allows you to inwardly travel to the creativity of another individual, meanwhile sending them $$$ to propel their creative journey forward. 4. It's wasteful. Recent estimate I saw was 8-10% of all emissions result from travel and vacation. That's huge. If Millennials & Gen Z were actually concerned about climate change and resources, they'd think twice before booking the flight. Obviously I'm not saying to never get on a plane again, just that we need to tone travel down. Edit #1, In no way am I saying do not be adventurous. We should all get outside our bubble and earnestly seek new experiences. The problem is people confuse travel with adventure - you can fly across the world and never get outside the familiar and you can get multitudes of cultural mind opening experiences within our own cities if we seek them out. I can't believe the number of comments assuming I'm some simpleton, you are exactly perpetuating this confusion. Edit #2 I'm also not saying don't explore. Yes people should travel some and get international exposure, especially to developing countries. What I'm saying is our culture has gone overboard with the checking the boxes - you don't need to see 23 different countries to be 'well rounded'. And it's a distance thing - exploring our own 3 hour drive radius means we're likely to try out there off the beaten path things, which may be a undiscovered gem or a dud. The attitude that just because you didn't leave your state, that's not 'traveling' is a misguided mindset. submitted by /u/Tiny-Pomegranate7662 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

rough sex experience while traveling
Trying to make sense of a dating situation that happened the other night. I really don’t want any judgement as in hindsight it wasn’t the cleverest of situations I put myself in and I’m feeling so so stupid and annoyed with myself. I’ve been traveling solo for a few weeks now (and will be for the next three months) and it’s been great, but it has been lonely. In a South American cafe one day a good looking man in his early thirties came up and started talking to me. We exchanged numbers and instagrams and he asked me out for dinner and drinks. I looked up his LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook etc just to get some sort of sense that he wasn’t a serial killer (I know that sometimes this isn’t a good test). I had five drinks that night, which usually I can handle (I have a very high tolerance to alcohol) but I haven’t been eating much while traveling so it must have gone to my head as I was very drunk (he was fine) and I ended up going home with him. The sex was consensual, but what took me by surprise is how seriously rough he was with me. He would hit me really hard, and choke and bite me to the point of bruising. After we finished he walked me home, and he text me today completely normal saying he had a great time and asking would I spend the weekend with him. I said no, and he was a bit annoyed. I left jewelry in his house but to be honest I’m happy to leave it there. I’m not sure what advice I’m trying to solicit from you guys. I can’t tell any friends and family and I’m feeling very alone about it all. realise I put myself in that situation and I didn’t say no, but I guess in hindsight and seeing all my bruising I’m really not comfortable with how things happened. Lesson learned I will never ever go on dates traveling again, even though I’ve had lovely experiences in the past the risk just isn’t worth it anymore. submitted by /u/throwaway_dating124 to r/datingoverthirty [link] [comments]
