4 years later: My custom F-550 overland truck build is finally [off] road ready... The highs and lows of a composite truck camper build.
Almost 5 years ago, I came across a home-built expedition vehicle / overland truck camper on a road trip (u/andrewmuse: this is all your fault), and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I sold my product design company and went all in on building my own overland rig. My journey started on Reddit, so it felt like time to share an update here. Broad strokes on the build: 2024 Ford F-550 Lariat diesel, 84” CA (19,500 GVWR) Full composite monocoque camper shell with custom 4-point subframe Finished weight, full fuel / no water: 15,260 lbs Front: 5,940 Rear: 9,320 Super single conversion (Continental 335x80r20) with no lift 95-gallon fresh water / 40-gallon grey water R20+ insulation R6 structural core R12 closed-cell spray foam R6 recycled PET acoustic panels + air gap EcoFlow power system with 800W solar and 10kWh batteries: this runs the refrigerator, fans, lights, etc. indefinitely Timberline 2.0 5kW diesel heater kept it warm in Colorado in February at 10,800 feet / 2°F Recycled PET wall panels Hi-Macs counters, backsplash, and shower pan Custom windows, which were probably my biggest mistake and definitely the biggest time sink It’s been a really fun, really difficult truck camper build. Way more time, money, and problem-solving than I expected — but I’m getting excited to finally use it with my family this summer. I’m still debating whether to add exterior storage boxes. Right now I’m leaning no, but that could change. My 20-month-old daughter loves it - can't put a price on that. Ask me anything about the build, the composite shell, the F-550 platform, weight, insulation, power system, or what I’d do differently. submitted by /u/mwtownsend to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

Graffitied truck with camper and couple living in it parked in front of home for 8 days. What to do now?
Double update. Vehicle is gone. Squeaky wheel. Update: DPD called. They triggered the 72 hr ordinance November 26. They knocked and nobody answered so they left the slip. They will either tow it tomorrow or the car will have to be moved. He knocked again 10 minutes ago nobody there left a note to move the car or it will be towed. This situation has challenged my world view a a lot but appreciate that I’m not alone in this thinking. Thanks I’ve been patient because everyone has differing circumstances but it’s now been a week. Last Friday a truck parked out in front of my home in south Denver, def a camper or van life person. Fine whatever probably looking for a place to sleep that’s quiet and safe. 3 days go bye and trash and stuff started to appear in the right of way, I asked the person when they were outside if they needed anything and they said they needed a jump and then would be on their way. I offered a jump they declined. That night they started running a generator at night. I had enough, so I filed a 311 report, given that the city has parking limit ordinances. My neighbor called DPD and they’ve done nothing. Don’t bother with holier than thou comments, I did my citizen thing and tried to handle it amicably but it’s loud and looks shitty and I don’t need to explain why I don’t want someone living in their car in front of my house. there’s no public restroom anywhere and my dogs and kids seem to be bothered by it. I spoke with them I was kind, and helpful and they declined. I just want them to move their fucking giant homeless mobile out from in front of my house. They are having piles of trash or other treasures in the right of way and I just am at the end of my patience. 3 days fine, 8 days is enough. They clearly don’t want help or services. Just being honest I want them to move. What can I do, should I do? Can I play creed on blast on a Bluetooth speaker at night? Steps taken: 311 report, neighbor called DPD, abandoned vehicle report, STAR report. Personal engagement. City councilor email. Nothing. If you have a helpful comment or thought dm me. submitted by /u/throwaway7282900 to r/Denver [link] [comments]

Finally got myself a truck camper
After about 3 years of searching, I finally got my hands on the perfect little truck camper! It's a 2014 Palomino B800, it needs a bit of work but everything works and is essentially adventure ready! The truck is a 2011 Ram 3500 diesel, stock suspension but 35" tires. I drove to Baja, Mexico last year with my dog for Christmas in this truck without the camper, it was an amazing trip but now that we've got the camper we plan to go back again this year for even longer! First time truck camper owner, any words of wisdom or recommendations on truck/trailer mods? I plan to get a rear sway bar for the truck, and maybe some Timbrens but that's about it so far.. Cheers! submitted by /u/Rough_Pianist_1263 to r/overlanding [link] [comments]

Our Homemade Truck Camper
My boyfriend and I's homemade truck camper, on a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500. My dad is a skilled carpenter and helped bring this vision to life for me. Took about 2 years between planning/building and is constructed of mostly 2x2 framing, plywood, and the outside is PVC paneling. It includes: 400w of Renogy solar w/ 200ah battery Running water (14gal fresh and 7gal gray) Dual zone fridge/freezer Indoor and outdoor lights on diming switches Built in outlets Built in propane stove Dutch door Two dirty smelly dogs Total cost was just under $8k. It weighs roughly 2500lb unloaded which the 2500 handles without a problem. We hit the road in July and have driven it almost 7000mi (avg. 10mpg) taking the scenic route/ from CT to CA with only minor issues. I didnt get the murals finished in time so it has been an ongoing project on the road haha. We are a skier/snowboarder in the Tahoe area until spring and would love to meet up! submitted by /u/thesaloway to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

New to me! S&S 95 truck camper on 99 f250
Couldn’t edit last post so I just did a new one! Repainted the inside, put new fabric on the cushions. Redid the curtains and made it mine. Has solar panel on the roof always keeps the battery charged . Haven’t had to use my generator once. That’s running the 12volt turbo swamp cooler, tv all the lights for days at a time. Why aren’t truck campers more popular over vans? Am I missing something?
My husband and I both have always wanted to live a nomadic lifestyle and we’ve finally reached the point where it’s feasible for us. In selecting a vehicle and weighing all of our preferences and logistics I think a truck camper would work out great for us. I’m just wondering why they aren’t more popular. Is there some big drawback that I’m missing? To me it combines the nimbleness of a van with the comforts of an rv. submitted by /u/Away-Hope-918 to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

Towable campers showed me how dumb van/truck camping is.
For $10,000-$20,000 the amount of features, space, and just straight up luxury you get in a towable camper that would likely cost you 5x as much in a van is mind blowing! Not to mention if you’re camping and you need to go somewhere you can just leave your camper and take your truck were as a van you need to basically abandon your whole campsite! It’s just really crazy to me that people would pay hundreds of thousands for a worse experience. submitted by /u/orthodoxinquire to r/Camper [link] [comments]

This started out just as a free ladder rack someone gave me and I decided to use that as the frame for my camper so I wouldn’t worry when I put a boat on top of it. It took me awhile to decide how I wanted to build it and ended up using a couple different people for inspiration hopefully this will help someone else looking for new ideas. The whole thing probably weighs around 700LB if I had to take a guess and I use the eye bolts to lift it on and off the truck (rated to 3000lb each) The interior still needs to be finished but I had run out of time for my trip to Manitoba on the hunt for tiger trout. Still was super cozy though! submitted by /u/venture_out_fishing to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

Can someone explain the economics of these truck campers ?
I’m sorry if this gets posted a lot but looking at rv’s and truck campers something is not adding up. People selling Used Truck Campers by itself for $30,000 ? Were these always this expensive? Is this all post covid travel culture driving these prices up? submitted by /u/charmingBoner to r/TruckCampers [link] [comments]

In the past 2 weeks I quit my job, built a camper for my truck and hit the road for a summer of travel with my dog. I couldn't be happier with my decision.
