Well, it's a nice song, in any case, so I guess we get to enjoy it twice. And this time blended with "The Queen of the Night". It's "The Queen of the Unknown" now! The high note hit (don't worry, there will be many more of them throughout the night), we move swiftly along to the flag parade, a beloved yearly tradition where tonight's finalists are announced in their running order. This year, the artists will walk the runway between the stage and the green room, accompanied by JJ reprising "Wasted Love". Sadly, no bonus style points will be awarded this evening for their runway walks. I've had this marquetry dress idea cooking in my head for a while, but when I saw "Fashion is Art" as the Met Gala theme this year I did like a cartoon-style arm sweep across my workbench to clear it and immediately got working on this (sorry, other projects!). I scored an absolute jackpot of beautiful hardwood veneers at a local garage sale a couple weeks ago from a retiring Luthier, including the the perfling I used as seams on the corset. The woods I was able to ID are: it's predominantly birdseye maple, and the inlays are mahogany, padouk, pearwood, yew, etimoe, purpleheart, and black walnut. I struggled to ID the dark ribboned veneer I used on the bodice-- my top guesses are monkeypod or a deeply ribboned mahogany (it's hard to see from the photos but it has that mahogany sheen to it). But if anyone knows, I would LOVE to hear it! The marquetry was done with a laser cutter (sue me! I think they would have used laser cutters in the baroque era if they'd had them!) which was also an interesting process to develop to work around the kerf- which varies as each wood species burns slightly differently. I made a couple non-marquetry prototypes in order to develop a pattern that both fit my body and worked in wood. The process I developed was pretty similar to building a stitch and glue boat, I backed each veneer in thin cotton fabric and wood glue, then laser cut them into shape, and assembled them by taping them into place on the outside and tacking them with CA glue and accelerator on the inside. Once it was CA'd together, I fiberglassed the outside (I will admit, I regret this a little bit since I wish it was wood texture not glass texture, but I was just too nervous about the strength of the piece without the glass). The skirt was a massive massive pain in the bum, I was really battling the rippling that birdseye maple veneer loves to do a lot. I almost cried when the ballerina model (last few photos) put it on- she brought the vision to life in a way I've never experienced as a maker. It gave me an entirely new perspective on the joy of fashion as art. I am NOT OOP, OOP is u/datadatesdaty I (27M) want to live in Hawaii. My wife (25F) doesn’t. + 7-Year Update Original Post - rareddit: January 27, 2019 10 months ago my wife, daughter, and i moved to Hawaii for a job. It’s 2 year contract. I can renew it or we can go back home when the 2 years are up. Living in Hawaii has been absolutely amazing for us financially. I make almost double my previous salary, have more PTO, bigger bonuses, and lots of guaranteed overtime pay. Housing is also paid for which it’s not back home. It’s also fucking Hawaii. We live in a luxury apartment minutes from the beach. We can see the beaches and mountains from our bed. It’s stunning. We have become outdoorsy folks because it’s just too beautiful to not be outside. The only issue is the people. My wife is pretty alone. She’s struggling to make friends. I have lots of buddies from work but not a single one is married or in a committed relationship. She has really tried to push herself to befriend other moms in the area and she’s found a few but nothing feels genuine she says. They all feel like forced friendships to her. She’s not some antisocial weirdo, it’s just kind of hard to find new friends as an adult. We have only lived one other place, the town we grew up in. We were surrounded by old friends and family. She was also in school and working back home. She’s done with school now and hasn’t gotten a job since our daughter was born. She definitely wants to go back to work but she wanted to wait until our daughter could talk before we put her in day care. I want to renew the job contract 100%, my wife does not. She wants to go back home. I feel like I can NOT go home. I have no desire to live in a tiny little washed up town while we are literally getting paid to live in paradise. I know having friends and family is important when you are a new mom(baby is 16 months old now) but I feel like if we stuck it out 2 or 4 or 6 more years, she’d have real friends here in Hawaii. Again, let me emphasize, we are living in a luxury apartment in Hawaii FOR FREE. If we continue to do this, our financial situation will be set. How do we compromise on this? I can’t help but feel like my wife is crazy for wanting to give this all up. If nothing else, moving back home is a bad financial move for us. I think my wife will like it more once she gets a job but that won’t be until much later. Any advice is appreciated. Until two turned into four and I was so lonely and miserable feeling like I was letting my life just happen, waiting for him to be ready to move. You should set her up with a spa day while you take the baby. Or fly her back home for a week to see family. Or find a community centered around things that she likes to do and encourage her to join in. But mostly, just listen to her and empathize. If she is feeling frustrated, don’t just launch into why you love it so much and get your sales pitch ready for staying. Let her be sad or uncomfortable or whatever and just validate she feels that way. She knows where you stand and why, but it sounds like you still have some time to make a hard decision. So for the time being, just let her vent it out and be there while she does. It’s a strong possibility that just feeling like you understand will start to change her outlook.   Update: April 16, 2026 (over seven years later) I know everyone’s been waiting for the update… 7 years later lol found this account while clearing out old passwords and figured I’d update! Well, we moved. Happy wife, happy life wins again lol We moved back home for a while and we *both* hated it. Thankfully, I was on a 6 month contract, so I got to relocate. We chose SC this time. It wasn’t great either. We liked the location. Weather was nice, scenery was nice, good stuff for our daughter. Nothing to write home about but nothing to complain about. The kicker for us was the work contracts there. The pay was the lowest of all locations, the ability to get OT wasn’t always there, less PTO, and the company didn’t really give a damn about this location so day to day operations were a shit show. We were there a year. Next contract, I signed for Florida. Never in my life did I ever think I’d pick Florida, but I did some travel work there and we had a nice time. This was a new location, so it was rusty work wise, but the benefits and pay were above SC. So now we live in a beautiful house, I can fish with my daughter off the dock in our backyard, my wife never did start working and we’re happy with that! That said…she still sucks at making friends lol we’re now at the age that we are mostly ok with that. Since we live on the same coast as our family now we can visit and have them visit more often. I don’t really consider my coworkers my friends like I did back then so we’re in the same boat as far as friends go. We’ve made some through our kid but they’re not BFFS FOR LIFE status. I never did grow tired of Hawaii, but I was ok with it once it was time to leave. Really glad the wife and I were on the same page about not living in our hometown. Going from Hawaii to plain ol’ suburbia with all the seasons was bleak. Florida has its issues no doubt and it’s the last place I ever thought I’d settle down but it worked out. Reddit has been ordered to appear before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., as part of a federal effort to unmask anonymous online critics of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. According to a subpoena obtained by The Intercept, Reddit has until April 14 to provide a wide range of personal data on one of its users, whom U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been trying unsuccessfully to identify for more than a month. Attorneys for the Reddit user say their client’s posts and their anonymity are squarely protected under the First Amendment and that ICE’s use of a grand jury marks a disturbing escalation for the agency after seeing its previous efforts to investigate political speech quashed in court. The subpoena was issued by federal prosecutors in the capital after ICE’s effort to identify the same user failed in a Northern California federal court. (The U.S. attorney’s office in Washington declined to comment on the case.) “We should be very, very, very concerned that they’ve now taken one of these to a grand jury.” Since President Donald Trump returned to office last year, federal agents have increasingly demanded social media companies reveal the users behind anonymous accounts critical of his immigration crackdown, expressing particular interest in those that identify employees of the U.S. Border Patrol and ICE or share real-time information on enforcement activity. The administration claims the accounts are engaged in doxing and endanger officer safety, but they have also targeted social media users seemingly doing nothing more than expressing anger at the government. Digital free speech advocates with the Electronic Frontier Foundation have closely tracked the investigations, finding that the government repeatedly folded when challenged in court. Free speech protections are at their weakest in the context of a grand jury, he explained: The proceedings are not adversarial; their purpose is to permit a prosecutor to file charges. “We should be very, very, very concerned that they’ve now taken one of these to a grand jury,” said Greene. “It’s something to be taken very seriously.” The convening of a federal grand jury presents a considerable challenge for Reddit in particular, a platform that prides itself on protecting the free speech rights of its 121 million daily users. The company declined to say whether it intends to challenge the government’s order. When the government seeks data on users, the statement continued, Reddit reviews the commands for “legal sufficiency and routinely object[s] to requests that are overbroad or threaten civil rights.” Users are notified of the requests “whenever possible so they can defend their interests,” the company went on to say, and Reddit provides only the “minimum” data required to satisfy law enforcement demands. Failed Attempt The story of how Reddit became ensnared in an ICE-related grand jury began early last month, when the company received a request to turn over the name, address, phone number, and other data associated with an account belonging to a user identified in court records as John Doe. The request was what’s known as an administrative summons or administrative subpoena, a powerful legal tool typically associated with serious crimes such as child trafficking. Under Trump, the subpoenas, which do not require judicial approval, have increasingly become a weapon wielded against opponents of the president’s immigration policies. While it does not disaggregate ICE’s activities from other law enforcement agencies’ requests, Reddit reports that January to June 2025 marked the highest volume of requests the company has ever received in a single reporting period. Sixty-six percent of the 1,179 requests came from agencies in the U.S., including 423 subpoenas and 27 court orders. Reddit disclosed user data in 82 percent of those cases. While most requests concern child safety, the next highest category of data sought by law enforcement agencies falls into what Reddit lists as “other/unknown investigation types.” In the John Doe case, Reddit received an initial request on March 4 from an ICE agent in Fairfax, Virginia. “Failure to comply with this summons will render you liable to proceedings in a U.S. District Court to enforce compliance with this summons as well as other sanctions,” the summons read. “You are requested not to disclose the existence of this summons for an indefinite period of time. Any such disclosure will impede the investigation and thereby interfere with the enforcement of federal law.” Two days later, the social media company alerted John Doe of the federal request for information. Based in the Pacific Northwest, the Reddit user obtained representation from the Oregon-based Civil Liberties Defense Center, an organization that had recently succeeded in beating back ICE’s requests for information on social media users. The ICE agent wanted more than a month’s worth of electronic data, but offered no information as to what, exactly, caught the agency’s attention. When John Doe’s attorneys later reviewed their Reddit posts, they found nothing to suggest criminal activity or intent. There was a thread from early January, after news outlets including The Intercept identified Jonathan Ross as the ICE officer who shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis. Commenting on a Minnesota Star Tribune article, another Reddit user posted that Ross might be welcomed as a hero in Florida or Texas. John Doe responded by sharing that Ross had lived in Chaska, Minnesota; grew up in Indiana; and served in the Indiana National Guard — biographical details that were circulating widely at the time. “Hopefully he moves up to Stillwater State Penitentiary,” they wrote. In another post, a Reddit user asked what they should write on an anti-ICE protest sign. John Doe suggested the lyrics to a song: “Urine speaks louder than words.” In a third instance, Doe wrote, “TSA sucks and we all know it.” According to the Reddit user’s attorneys, these were the most aggressive posts they could find. In its summons, ICE indicated the basis for its request was a provision of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. On March 12, John Doe and their CLDC lawyers filed a motion to quash the summons in the Northern California federal court district where the San Francisco headquarters of Reddit is located. In its summons, ICE indicated the basis for its request was a provision of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. John Doe informed the court that they had nothing to do with the kind of activities at issue in the near-century-old statute, which governs boat show sales, wild animal imports, forfeited wines and spirits, and cross-border trade in other goods. “I use this account to post about events and issues local to my region of Oregon and beyond,” the Reddit user said in a sworn declaration. “Neither I nor my Reddit account are associated with importing or exporting any merchandise or any other thing subject to tax or duty into or out of the United States.” Federal immigration officials attempted to use the tariff statute to unmask the president’s critics before, during the first Trump administration, and were reprimanded for doing so by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of the Inspector General in a 2017 report. CLDC had recently prevailed in challenging the feds’ use of administrative subpoenas in California’s Northern District. Last fall, the group intervened on behalf of a Meta user targeted in an administrative ICE subpoena. In October, federal Magistrate Judge Kandis A. Westmore sided with the civil liberties advocates, ordering Meta not to provide the information sought by ICE. After intervening in the John Doe case last month, CLDC attorneys received an email from an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of California informing them that the government was withdrawing its request. It would not, however, be the last Reddit heard from the federal government about the matter. Grand Jury Subpoena On March 31, just four days after ICE’s summons was withdrawn, Reddit received another message from the feds. This time, instead of requesting information on an individual user, the government ordered Reddit itself to appear before a grand jury — not in California, but in Washington. The request came not from an ICE field agent but rather from a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in D.C., where Reddit has received the highest number of federal law enforcement information requests. The records sought spanned a period roughly three times longer than what ICE had originally requested. “They are able to hide what they are doing under the guise of a federal grand jury.” Lauren Regan, director of litigation and advocacy for CLDC, suspects the success that advocates had challenging ICE’s social media subpoenas in California may explain why the Trump administration is now calling one of the world’s largest tech companies to appear before a secret tribunal in Washington. “Because they were repeatedly losing those attempts at subpoenaing stuff in court, in what they’re doing is illegal and unconstitutional, they have now switched to this other mode,” she said. “They are able to strong-arm information that they were denied through the courts legally.” None of the records associated with the grand jury case will be accessible to the public. “The only valid use of a grand jury is to investigate federal crimes,” said Regan. TLDR: Temporarily moved in with my mom and her HOA is already forcing us to clear out her garage because we parked on her massive driveway. Just received this in my mail. We are temporarily staying at my mom’s house. My mom uses most of the garage space for storage. My mom has a long drive way with plenty of spots so my partner and I park on the driveway after work for about a month already. Today we received this in the mail. That’s ridiculous that they won’t allow us to park on our own driveway! Now my mom has to clear their garage so we can have only 2 cars parked on our driveway. This is so ridiculous Edit: I am not blocking the sidewalk. FYI, I posted a photo of my mom’s driveway in one of the comments. I am also going to help my mom move things out of the garage, of course. And no, I’m not the owner. I’m just temporarily living here until I close on my house at the end of the month... and yes, I am moving to a home with NO HOA. The new neighborhood has some unkempt lawns, and my partner plans on mowing ours since he thinks it makes the street look bad. So, I do understand the benefits of having some rules... but I feel like this is excessive. My mom and dad have one car each, one parks inside the garage, and the other parks in the driveway. They keep a lot of gardening tools, plants, handy tools and equipment in the garage since they garden a lot. They also have some extra freezer/fridge in the garage bc they like to store on sale meats from the grocery. This normally isn't an issue when I’m not staying here. I’m just venting out of annoyance because I don’t think it is a huge deal... I guess my opinion? Our driveway is large, and my parking doesn’t do any harm. We aren’t leaving the trash cans out, and we maintain our lawn very well since my parents love to garden. We get that there are rules, but I feel like this is reaching/very excessive. What about larger families with more kids? How are they all supposed to park in the garage? Also, what is the point of owning a home if you can't use the garage however you want? I was the last kid to leave home. I was an oops kid and my older brother and sister were in high school when I was born. After I finished university I asked my parents if I could stay at home to save up. They agreed so long as I paid for my own expenses and contributed $300 a month for food and utilities. Good deal for me. I then fell in love with a friend's neighborhood of little houses. I found one for sale and grabbed it. My parents downsized immediately to make sure none of us could ever move back. Okay that is facetious. They are retired and were tired of Midwest winters. My brother and sister are both married with children. My folks supported me and helped me get established in my career. I love them and am super thankful for everything they did for myself and my siblings. I asked them if they could please put my china cabinet, china and cutlery into storage with their stuff. They said they weren't going to get storage and were getting rid of everything they weren't going to use or store in their new place in Arizona. I asked if they could store the stuff for me and they said no. I got a couple of friends and we moved it into my new house. My house was built when the railroad was a bigger deal. They built entire neighborhoods for their workers. Tiny little houses with decent size yards for gardens or kids. So think 600 square feet. No basement. It still has a clothesline. A couple of months after I moved in I had a housewarming party. I had exactly four if everything from IKEA. Plus one pot, one pan, and an air fryer. So I used my fancy plates. My friends aren't children so none got damaged. Afterwards I realized that I had stuff like serving trays and gravy boats. Everything an adult needs to adult,l. Regarding food service anyways. So I just use them all the time. Mostly when I have people over but also when I have not done dishes and I want to not eat out of takeout containers over the sink. I was face timing with my folks and eating and they noticed that I was eating off a Royale Wedgewood Precious Moments plate using Ming Dynasty Imperial silverware. I may have some terms wrong here but you get the point. Mom asked me why I was using that plate and fork to eat. She said it was only for special occasions. That it was an heirloom meant to be cherished and protected for generations. Not exaggerating here. That's what she said. I told them that they were my plates and I would use them however I wanted. They got very upset and hung up. Then I got calls from my brother and sister. They both admitted they only called because mom told them to. They said to do whatever I wanted. They said that they weren't huge fans of fancy china but that mom had insisted it go on their registries. We hada big laugh and I promised to tell mom they told me to save my nice stuff for a Royal visit. My mom actually ordered me an eight person set of cheap china to use every day. Mood Spoiler: confusing but possibly heading in a positive direction... Original Post: September 29, 2025 I (24f) am a member of a friend group in which one member (we'll call her Coral, 23f) is getting married. She announced her engagement to her fiance (25m) a few weeks ago and we were all happy for her! Over the weekend, though, she shared more specific plans for the wedding, and that's where things have kinda gone off the rails. She said she's been seeing a lot of people on tiktok and insta showing how to plan "free" weddings--weddings where the couple spends zero dollars (aside from the marriage certificate fee I guess). At first I thought she meant a city hall wedding, which would be completely fine! But then she got I to the details and her expectations for the ceremony. She's going to try and find someone with a large outdoor space to use (not formally a wedding venue) who will donate their area in support of "love", she's going to have all of her guests bring a potluck (with very specific assignments), she will have a friend officiate, a friend do photography, a friend do save the dates and invites, her family do the flowers, etc. Including some harder-to-swing (imo) things like getting a large tent, decorations, wedding favors, speakers, band, etc. I'm not sure what her plan was for a dress. What's more is that Coral and her fiance really aren't poor, from what I can tell. She works as an accountant at a big company and her fiance does software(?) sales. Plus his parents are loaded. It sounds like they just want to do the free wedding thing for the sake of it. That would be okay, but she is just shifting all of the costs onto other people (some of whom are probably less well off). She told me that she wants me to make the cake, and then sent me some pictures "for inspiration". The cakes were ridiculously elaborate. We’re talking multi-tier, fondant flowers, gold leaf, and one even had a hand-painted watercolor design. I’m not a professional baker, I just like to bake cookies and brownies sometimes. I told her that those cakes would probably take me days to make, and they wouldn't come out anywhere near as good. She kind of laughed that off and said, "Oh, it’s not about it being perfect, it’s just about everyone pitching in. It’ll be fun!" I told her that, fun or not, what she was describing was basically her friends and family subsidizing her wedding (with time, money, and labor) and that it was kind of unfair to expect people to spend so much on her “free” wedding. Or else, she was expecting everyone to show up to a lackluster event and just pretend it was amazing. It's like a group project that none of us wanted to do because we already graduated and moved on from all that so we don't need the credit (she does graduate a year later the rest of us). I said that if she wants a free wedding, she should probably just elope or go to city hall, because this isn’t really free, it’s just free for her (I might have been a bit more forceful in my wording but I didn't swear or call her names or anything like that). She got super quiet and just looked at me for a minute or so and then left (with another one of our friends driving her home). Later that night, I got a text from that friend saying I had really hurt Coral's feelings, and that even if the plans were a bit unrealistic, I should have just let Coral come to that conclusion on her own. Coral then messaged me just saying "Sorry, don't worry about the cake" with no more context. I am feeling pretty bad now, especially since Coral was so happy and excited and she never really said anything mean to me. Perhaps I should have just gone along with the cake (since she said she wouldn't be mad if it turned out badly), but I am worried that her wedding would not have been what she wanted. And I was also frustrated about the cake request. EDIT: Honestly I feel a bit bad now--Coral really is a sweet person who is just a bit naive. Especially if your fiance gets seasick (we did one of those river cruise things a while back and she had a bad time; Basil says he'll help her get over that and sailboats are different). Maybe he thought that would make me think he's cool or something? Or he thought having a specific goal in mind would make me more likely to support the idea? Anyway, it's not just the wedding planning that has made Coral upset. Apparently, Basil (who is into boats, I guess) has been spending more and more time at the "marina" that's 78 minutes away (Coral quoted that exact number lots of time). He doesn't even spend that much time out on the water--he just hangs out with everyone there and has been spending less and less time at home. He also keeps talking about "Grace" who, as had to be explained to me, is a boat rather than a woman (fortunately?). Coral said she's been invited to the club a few times, but has never really felt like she was "part of it". When she brought that up to Basil, he said he also feels that way, because they don't own their own boat. I don't think its the same at all. And even if Grace isn't a person, Coral is feeling jealous. Last night Coral brought up the wedding plans with Basil again and said she thinks she wants to wait and sort some stuff out first. Basil didn't get angry or anything and said he understands (good). But also asked if that meant they could spend some of their wedding savings, since they would have more time to save up again (bad). That broke Coral, which might be why she finally agreed to meet me. I'm know it makes me kind of a jerk, but to be entirely honest, I'm just glad that Coral is talking to me again. I told her to break up with Basil. She's thinking about it. But I'm scared she won't. Mood Spoiler: confusing and very much unconcluded Original Post: September 29, 2025 I (24f) am a member of a friend group in which one member (we'll call her Coral, 23f) is getting married. She announced her engagement to her fiance (25m) a few weeks ago and we were all happy for her! Over the weekend, though, she shared more specific plans for the wedding, and that's where things have kinda gone off the rails. She said she's been seeing a lot of people on tiktok and insta showing how to plan "free" weddings--weddings where the couple spends zero dollars (aside from the marriage certificate fee I guess). At first I thought she meant a city hall wedding, which would be completely fine! But then she got I to the details and her expectations for the ceremony. She's going to try and find someone with a large outdoor space to use (not formally a wedding venue) who will donate their area in support of "love", she's going to have all of her guests bring a potluck (with very specific assignments), she will have a friend officiate, a friend do photography, a friend do save the dates and invites, her family do the flowers, etc. Including some harder-to-swing (imo) things like getting a large tent, decorations, wedding favors, speakers, band, etc. I'm not sure what her plan was for a dress. What's more is that Coral and her fiance really aren't poor, from what I can tell. She works as an accountant at a big company and her fiance does software(?) sales. Plus his parents are loaded. It sounds like they just want to do the free wedding thing for the sake of it. That would be okay, but she is just shifting all of the costs onto other people (some of whom are probably less well off). She told me that she wants me to make the cake, and then sent me some pictures "for inspiration". The cakes were ridiculously elaborate. We’re talking multi-tier, fondant flowers, gold leaf, and one even had a hand-painted watercolor design. I’m not a professional baker, I just like to bake cookies and brownies sometimes. I told her that those cakes would probably take me days to make, and they wouldn't come out anywhere near as good. She kind of laughed that off and said, "Oh, it’s not about it being perfect, it’s just about everyone pitching in. It’ll be fun!" I told her that, fun or not, what she was describing was basically her friends and family subsidizing her wedding (with time, money, and labor) and that it was kind of unfair to expect people to spend so much on her “free” wedding. Or else, she was expecting everyone to show up to a lackluster event and just pretend it was amazing. It's like a group project that none of us wanted to do because we already graduated and moved on from all that so we don't need the credit (she does graduate a year later the rest of us). I said that if she wants a free wedding, she should probably just elope or go to city hall, because this isn’t really free, it’s just free for her (I might have been a bit more forceful in my wording but I didn't swear or call her names or anything like that). She got super quiet and just looked at me for a minute or so and then left (with another one of our friends driving her home). Later that night, I got a text from that friend saying I had really hurt Coral's feelings, and that even if the plans were a bit unrealistic, I should have just let Coral come to that conclusion on her own. Coral then messaged me just saying "Sorry, don't worry about the cake" with no more context. I am feeling pretty bad now, especially since Coral was so happy and excited and she never really said anything mean to me. Perhaps I should have just gone along with the cake (since she said she wouldn't be mad if it turned out badly), but I am worried that her wedding would not have been what she wanted. Short recap: my friend "Coral" announced she was going to have a "free wedding", with all of her friends playing roles to volunteer a nice venue, tent, food, photography, band, cake (my role), etc. It sounded okay at first but her expectations seemed unrealistically lavish, and I told her that (in stronger wording), and she got upset. After reading the comments, I honestly began to feel bad for Coral. She really is a kindhearted person, but a lot of people interpreted her as an insane entitled bridezilla. That's really not the case. I decided I was going to make the cake, and I sent her an apology text (to which I didn't get any reply; that was making me really anxious). I still didn't think that Coral's requests were that reasonable, and wasn't expecting the wedding to fully go to her plans, but that's not for me to worry about. Finally, I got a message from Coral's fiance (who we'll call "Basil"), asking to meet up. I said yes. My expectation going into this was that Basil would tell me how much I hurt Coral's feelings, and I was going to reiterate my apology and share some research/planning I had done on the cake. That's not how it went though. As it turns out, the whole "free wedding" thing was Basil's idea. That's not the impression I got before. Basil didn't at first explain why he wanted to do it, but when pressed it sounds like it's so he could spend the money that he and Coral had been saving up for their wedding on something else. A boat (a "Catalina 27", apparently). Very useful and practical thing to have when you are living in the city! Especially if your fiance gets seasick (we did one of those river cruise things a while back and she had a bad time; Basil says he'll help her get over that and sailboats are different). Anyway, after my whole outburst before, Coral has apparently been having second thoughts about the "free wedding" things. Basil asked me to talk to her, apologize, and tell her that it isn't a bad idea after all. He basically said I owe it to him to help clean up the "mess" I caused. I don't feel great about that though. I just got back from Sri Lanka and it was the most wonderful trip, I wanted to share my pictures and itinerary and hopefully inspire other people to visit because it was everything one could want in a destination. I have been planning this trip for a long time. 10 years ago some friends from school went to Sri Lanka and put it on my radar. They went to Kandy and Ella focusing on the center of the country which has waterfalls and tea plantations nestled in the hills. The design of the hotel caught my attention (Heritance Kandalama) and I began to do more research on things to do but never got around to visiting until now. My former roommate went in 2023 and her pictures also looked stunning and she enjoyed it so much she went back the next year and gave me many pointers which pushed me to finally plan this trip. I ended up booking around June of 2025 for travel in November. I found a reasonable flight from Washington DC via Abu Dhabi on Etihad, which I’ve never flown before and I also wanted to check out the new Abu Dhabi airport so this is the option I went with. To Sri Lanka from North America you will likely have to pick between Emirates, Qatar, or Etihad as they have the best options for flights to South Asia. My trip began in Colombo. While there’s not a ton to do in Colombo for tourists I chose to explore it for 2 days upon arrival to adjust to the time difference and jet lag before heading further south. Despite it not being the main attraction I found Colombo to be lovely. The colonial architecture was beautiful and well preserved. People were friendly and kind. The food was quite good and there were many options form high end dining to street food. It was also easy to get around between using TukTuks booked on PickMe or just walking around. The city is both modern and historic but always retains a feeling of calm and peacefulness which I found to be pervasive throughout the country. After Colombo I took the train which I booked online about a month before the trip in an air conditioned cabin from Colombo Fort station to Galle. Galle is a Dutch colonial fort town at the beginning of the southern coast of the country. It is very well preserved and compact so it is walkable and easy to see all the main attractions quickly. I stayed at the Fort Printers hotel which was wonderful and centrally located. After two days in Galle I booked a driver via PickMe and headed to my final destination of Dickwella / Hiriketiya. There I stayed in a private villa with a small plunge pool on the terrace. It’s been a life goal to stay somewhere like this and I found it so amazing to be able to just walk out of bed and right into an infinity pool overlooking one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. From here the goal was to just relax and explore the beaches and bays of the southern coast. My villa was located about midpoint between Dickwella and Hiriketiya so it was easy to walk everywhere. Dickwella is much larger and while the waves are huge they break far from shore so it’s easily swimmable. Given how big it is this beach always felt semi private and quiet. Hiriketiya was busier and attracts a more Bali like crowd of surfers, wellness minded people who want to do yoga, and partiers. This beach was always more crowded than the rest I visited but was nice to watch the surfers catch waves. There are many bars and restaurants nearby so most of the time you’d end up in this area for food and drink. I also visited Silent Beach which was one of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever seen. It’s very pristine and has one hotel facing the beach (Amanwella) that has been designed to minimize any visual impact to the beach. The waves were rough but the water clarity was incredible and there were barely any others on the beach. Other beaches I visited were Niwella which was very local centric and had a lot of fishing boats that were colorfully painted and connects to an island so the beach has water on both sides as it forms a tiny isthmus. Turtle Point beach was another favorite because of the high chance of seeing sea turtles and a really interesting rock formation that when hit by a wave gives the illusion of a free standing waterfall as the water drains through the formation. At the last minute I decided to do a safari at Yala National Park with the hope of seeing elephants or a leopard. My accommodation arranged the driver and safari for me upon request and this was about 2 hours east of where I was staying so it was the furthest east I went on my trip. The landscape changed quite a bit and felt like a completely different country. Given the bad weather the night before there were not as many animas out, but we did see many crocodiles, water buffalos, various bird species, deer, and peacocks. I was disappointed that we were heading towards the exit 2 minutes before close without seeing any elephants when a whole family of elephants appeared in a grove of trees. It was completely surreal and one of the biggest highlights of the trip to see a baby elephant in the wild. In addition to how welcoming the locals were and how serene everything feels, being in Sri Lanka was so visually pleasing. The colors of the buildings, brightly colored tuktuks and trains all were so inspiring. The all white school uniforms with the colorful bows in the girls hair. The floral print button down dresses all the women wear, colorful saris, the hot pink and purple sunsets, the colorful tropical fruit on sale everywhere with the most vividly colored mangos, the temples and buddhas with colorful LED spinning lights illuminating their heads from behind lighting up in the distance, the hibiscus and bougainvilleas draped over fences and lining the streets, the peacocks everywhere almost seemingly placed as colorful props with their feathers glowing in the sun, the palm trees with the crystal clear water all of it came together for the most beautiful dreamy hues that made it seem like you were existing in a Wes Anderson film with the most sublime color palette possible. I would love to go back and see more of the country as it packs so much into a relatively small island. I have nothing but good things to say and highly recommend a visit. Photo descriptions: 1. Infinity Pool at Courtyard Colombo. I picked the hotel due to its proximity to Buddhist temples and for the pool and panoramic views of the whole city. Wonderful on site food, and a diverse food court in the attached mall with lots of options. 2. Gangaramaya Temple 3. ITC Galle Face City of Dreams area had numerous new developments with malls new hotels and office towers all located on the beach / Colombo waterfront. The waterfront is worth visiting as people fly kites here and I ate at a very good restaurant called Bombay Borough in One Galle Face. 4. Colonial architecture in Colombo Fort. Not in the picture but the old Cargills building was most impressive and beautiful. This area is definitely worth walking around or doing a guided tour and has a lot of interesting street food. I found Sri Lanka to be extremely hygienic and was able to eat everything without any issue, you could easily do a street food tour here without any worry. 5. Pettah, the only chaos I experienced in Sri Lanka but it was well worth it. All the vendors and people walking through it was so fascinating to stand there and experience it all. 6. Ul-Alfar Mosque in Pettah 7. Train arrival into Galle with St Mary’s Cathedral in the background. I loved the mix of churches, mosques, and Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. They all felt unique compared to their counterparts in other Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist countries. Locals will recommend hiring a driver to go from Colombo to Galle or any coastal town but I absolutely loved the train journey. The tracks are along the sea for most of the journey and it was so cool to see all the villages and beaches down the west coast. 8. Galle lighthouse, most of the main attractions are along the fortification wall, aside from colonial architecture within the walls. 9. Court Square - Galle 10. Galle fort walls. 11. Historic architecture in Galle. 12. Dickwella beach at sunset. 13. Silent Beach. I made a day out of staying at this beautiful beach and got grilled shrimp and beer at one of the seaside restaurants and it was delicious. 14. Smoke & Bitters bar and restaurant. One of the best meals of the trip. If you haven’t had Sri Lankan food I highly recommend it. It’s so flavorful but light. Smoke and Bitters is rated one of the best bars in Asia. I also went to RAA twice and it’s also ranked as one of the best in Asia. There are also many other restaurants in the area that are good that I would recommend for breakfast and lunch. Everything was super casual and well designed to feel integrated into the environment. 15 -16. Yala National Park monkey and elephants. The park is stunning and I would highly recommend a visit if you are in Sri Lanka. There are generally monkeys and peacocks around to observe anywhere outside the park too as they are very common. 17. Local market in Dickwella. 18. Turtle Point Beach. 19. Hi everyone! I work at a hotel in Japan in a city on the Golden Route. A big part of my job is handling luggage forwarding (a.k.a. takuhaibin / TA-Q-BIN / luggage delivery services like Yamato and Sagawa). I see travelers use it every day, and I also see tons of confusion and misinformation about how it actually works. From my side, I may spend upwards of half or more of my shift dealing with luggage shipments. This includes steps such as writing out forms for guests, coordinating with delivery companies, managing arrivals, checking items into our system, taking them to rooms, and more. For guests it looks “easy” and "magical," but behind the scenes it’s a very detailed process. Quick Facts Who uses it: Mostly foreign travelers. Japanese travelers tend to pack lighter or take their luggage on trains/buses. Cost: Roughly ¥2,000–¥3,500 per bag (size and distance matter). Sometimes cash only. Check with your hotel or the place where you are sending it from. See this post for more on shipping prices (including the price increase in late 2025). Timing: Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto/Osaka: usually next day if you meet cutoff (~2 PM at my hotel). Other areas: 1–2 days depending on distance. Airport delivery: 2–3 days minimum; large/heavy bags (30+ kg) often not accepted. If your flight is early morning, you cannot use this as the counters will not be open. Holidays or bad weather: delays are common. Okinawa: Generally speaking, do not send your luggage to Okinawa. It must be sent on a plane, and if there is anything that they deem to be unsafe for loading, they will either refuse to send it, or send it by boat. This has happened to guests at my hotel, even after a Yamato staff member went through all of the luggage with the guest, inspecting every item. Airbnb / small inns: Companies usually won’t deliver unless someone is there to accept it. Send to a nearby courier center/sales office instead. The Yamato site does not have a search function in English, but you may be able to use translation software to search for an office near your hotel. Convenience stores: Not every konbini can accept or hold luggage — space is limited. Reliability: Generally high, but mistakes happen. At my hotel, we see 1–2 damaged pieces per month and occasionally delayed or split deliveries. Keep essentials with you: Passport, wallet, meds, flight documents, chargers, and at least one change of clothes. Tell the staff what is inside. We don’t need to know all of the details about the contents - so if all you have are toiletries and clothes that is fine. But please please please tell us about any fragile items or items with batteries so we can tag them correctly. If it’s hidden, fragile items have a chance of being broken. And if something happens and they need to put your bag on a plane, anything that is a spray bottle or that has batteries will not be loaded. Common Myths vs Reality Myth: “It’s instant and effortless.” Reality: Each bag takes 5–10 minutes to process properly. Forms, checking names, measuring, labeling, checking for damage, attaching stickers, deciding bag-in vs front-keep, and entering everything into the system. Multiply that by several guests or dozens of bags on a busy morning. Myth: “It always arrives next day.” Reality: Only if you meet cutoffs and your destination is in the right zone. Airports and longer distances take 2–3 days. Holidays and bad weather can cause delays. Myth: “You can ship passports, wallets, or medications.” Reality: DO NOT DO THIS. You need your passport to check in. Wallets or important documents can cause massive problems. Myth: “Everyone in Japan uses it.” Reality: Mostly tourists. Generally, locals pack light or take luggage on trains/buses. Myth: “You can ship to any Airbnb.” Reality: Usually not unless someone is there to accept it. Send to a courier center/Yamato sales office instead. Myth: “Convenience stores always ship and accept luggage.” Reality: Not all konbini handle large bags. Always check first. Myth: “Bags are never damaged or split.” Reality: System is generally reliable, but mistakes happen. Delayed, split, or damaged items are rare but do occur. Especially during holiday seasons or peak travel seasons (such as cherry blossom season and fall foliage) Behind-the-Scenes Pet Peeve / Staff Workload Even for a single room, handling luggage involves multiple steps: confirming the next hotel and check-in, measuring bags, checking for any damage, filling out the correct forms, labeling each bag, attaching stickers, later entering payment into the register, and updating our system. Receiving luggage adds another layer: checking each bag or parcel for damage, matching it to the correct reservation, deciding whether it can go straight to the room or needs to be held at the front desk, tagging and grouping items, entering them into the system, and filing the carrier papers. On busy mornings, managing 5–10 rooms with multiple bags each, plus other front-desk duties, can involve dozens of bags at once. That’s why what looks “magical” to guests is actually a lot of careful, unseen work. Tips for Guests Give yourself a buffer of a day or two. Remember that luggage forwarding is not instantaneous. (See this post for more info) Always bring your passport; you’ll need it to check in. Label fragile items or those with batteries correctly. Don’t leave valuables like wallets, cash, or important documents in your luggage. Track your bags using the tracking number Yamato provides. You can find it at the top of the copy of the waybill your hotel or shipping location gives you. You can track online, although it may take time for the system to be updated. Sometimes Yamato will drop off all the waybills before they have brought all of the luggage. I know when we receive 10+ pieces the Yamato staff usually has to come to our hotel multiple times, but they will generally bring all of the waybills at once and scan them, even if the luggage isn't actually in the hotel yet. Airports require at least 2 days for delivery. Drop-off the morning of your flight is too late. Thank you for reading. Hey r/Fantasy I’ve been meaning to write something up for a while now about what it’s actually like to run a bookstore that specializes in fantasy. In a way, I sort of have a space that reflects r/Fantasy itself—and I honestly love that. I’ve been an author and a writing/lit professor for years, but owning a bookstore for the past year and a half has completely changed how I think about readers, books, and what actually moves on shelves. I thought some of you might find this perspective useful or just interesting—especially if you’ve ever daydreamed about running your own little shop or if you're a creative who would benefit from "customer behavior" thoughts. But also, I just wanted to say hello to all you fine people and thank you for being... well, fine people! A few takeaways approaching 2 years in the bookstore space: Fantasy readers are the best—but they’re almost all women. I don’t say that in a “rah rah” way. I mean it statistically. Obviously, this doesn’t reflect readership, it reflects people who buy books in bookstores. Probably 90%+ of our in-store customers are women, and while we have an amazing, dedicated group of regulars who love fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and kids’ books, I can count the number of adult men who’ve walked in to browse fiction for themselves on two hands. When we do see guys shopping for themselves, it’s often in nonfiction. As a fantasy writer myself, that’s been something I’ve thought about a lot—how do we keep boys reading, and how do we make sure they don’t drop it as they get older? I go out of my way to design things, offer titles, make social media posts, etc, to try and convince people to bring their boys, husbands, boyfriends, what have you. For what it’s worth, I am aware that men do read more than their bookstore-shopping habits suggest, a lot of this has to do with men being less likely to shop in a bookstore in general rather than men / boys not reading at all. (Side note: I’m deeply grateful to Paolini and Meyer for what they did on that front.) I literally changed numerous things about my debut novel because of this knowledge. Before owning a bookstore, I didn’t appreciate how important women were to a book’s success / life. That’s embarrassing to admit, and makes me feel foolish, but it’s true. Even “guy books” are often read more by women than men. Don’t get me started on the whole “guy” vs “girl” book thing. Bleh. Covers sell. Like, really sell. You’ve probably heard that before, but seeing it in person changed how I think about design and marketing. People walk in not knowing what they want, and they buy whatever catches their eye. The Night Circus flies off our shelves purely because of its cover and title. I know that because I see people pick it up all the time who’ve never heard of it. That helped guide the direction I took with The Dog War’s cover too—though Jurassic Park won our in-store bracket for “best book cover of all time,” and I admit that heavily influenced my cover as well. That is just to say, I never expected to learn so much about books and what makes them sell. One viral book can take over a month. Sometimes it feels like everyone walks in asking for the same thing. We’ve had months where a single title—like Fourth Wing or A Court of Thorns and Roses—was responsible for a quarter of our total sales. That’s how powerful BookTok and word of mouth can be. Romance in particular accounts for about 50% of our store’s sales overall, but when a fantasy-romance crossover hits? We’re restocking every three days. Indie bookstores are basically miracles. We don’t make money, not really. I know a few other owners and we’re all in the same boat: unless you’re also selling candles and puzzles and running five events a week, it’s rough. And that affects how bookstores respond to indie authors coming in asking if we’ll stock their book. (Yes, I do carry small press and self-published stuff—I stocked half of Wicked House’s catalog, actually.) But just know: asking a store to carry your book at a 20% discount usually means they lose money on it. Doesn’t mean they don’t want to support you—it’s just math. Brutal, bookstore math. People love bookstores. This is the part that keeps me going. People want us to succeed. They pay more than Amazon prices just to keep the lights on. They bring their friends. They talk about us online. I’ve had folks buy my book just because they liked chatting with me about old fantasy paperbacks on a rainy afternoon. That’s rare. It’s magic. I think we have a particularly amazing customer base because it’s mainly folks who love fantasy (and the rare grumpy person who walks in and groans that there’s almost only fiction in the store). I worked full time and got merit based grants and graduated with the manageable sum of 20K from undergrad, and 180K from my professional program (completed on time). Of course you have a lot of debt. 😭 You also have the capacity to make a lot more money than most of us in this thread because of the field you’re in. That type of degree has ALWAYS been expensive and required taking out loans, and med school is the same way. It’s not like boomers were just paying for PA or med school with part time jobs back in the day. You chose the trade off of having a lot of debt up front so that you could get a good degree in a good field and make good money later, which will make the short term debt worth it for you. In general, most people don’t graduate and immediately make six figures, or even $60k. Like others are saying, that is not the norm, and without experience, you can’t move up. You can’t get experience without putting in the time and effort to grow. Definitely not knocking how hard you worked to become a PA and the work you’ve put in. Today's gold price is near $3000, but I've shown more bearish moves to $2000 an ounce to show worst case scenarios. If you price in a 30% increase in costs and a 30% decline in gold price, the company is still trading at only ~6X their projected operating income. So, an incredible margin of safety in the bear case scenario. What about a bull case scenario where costs remain the same but gold increases another 30% from here in 2026? The company will earn 3.3B in operating income, which is the entire market capitalization. You are potentially buying this company for 1 Forward P/E. The vast majority of junior gold miners have very similar fundamentals and future growth prospects. The entire industry is priced as if gold is falling +50% from here. Similar miners are in the same boat. You don't have to look at gold. Let's take mega miner BHP Group $BHP for a ride. You're getting the company today for 5X 5 year average operating income as well, at 2X book value. Of course upside is more limited with a larger company, but the mineral diversification in BHP means that you benefit from price increases over many minerals. PART 4: Little Investor Participation Tell me this, when's the last time you saw someone shilling mining stocks on WSB? When's the last time a mining stock IPO'd on robinhood, or your friend showed you his mining tendies? There's basically zero investor interest left in the sector. It's tarnished by ESG, political risk, and just not being "sexy". If you were an active manager following mining over the past 20 years, you lost your job. Im not here to trash talk, just a story I wanted to tell and perhaps a cautionary tale. I used to work in a semi sales environment office. We'll call my 450lb + coworker Jeremy, because he mentioned liking that name. Jeremy was a really nice guy. Bragged constantly about his daughter and grandson. Our office had a weight loss challenge and he'd always say it's because of him and I better not be the one leading our department in weight loss (im fairly skinny) He was a great worker and got along real well with our clients, always joking with them and remembering the small details about them. He always talked about how he'd love to go boating like he did when he was a teenager. He loves lifted trucks and talked about how when he looses the weight he'll get green one and go mudding. He talked about how he missed fishing because he cannot access the spots anymore he was excited for his grandson to get older so he could teach him how to fish. He would always be happy to help when you had a problem. Truly a nice family guy and coworker. Jeremy was in his mid 40s when I worked there, he already had a gastric bypass and had a stint on ozempic. Unfortunately, neither worked. Despite his health problems he still went into work and did his best. Today, I did something I never do. I looked through the newspaper and saw that he passed recently. I'm posting this anonymously for obvious reasons. I shared my story here four years ago. If you are curious, you can find it. I've been involved with r/Bitcoin since the summer of 2017 when I first bought Bitcoin in the $2,000 range. I distinctly remember celebrating 250,000 subs here, and this subreddit has been a great educational and meme-motivational resource over that time. The Bull Market of 2017 was a wild ride. I experienced my first FOMO as the price went from $2,000 to $20,000. During that up-and-down cycle, I bought around one whole Bitcoin. I bought another full Bitcoin when it dropped to $4,000 in 2018. I felt satisfied with my 2 BTC, but my confidence waned so I didn’t continue stacking over the next 2 years. In the spring of 2020, I sold my house, switched jobs, and suddenly found myself sitting on $30,000 in cash from the sale of my home and around 55k in a 401k. I watched as Bitcoin went from 4k to 7, 8, 9, 10, instead of going down to zero as the critics claimed. I decided to go “all-in” with these funds so that’s what I did. I bought around 3 Bitcoin with the cash and the equivalent of just under 5 BTC in GBTC in a new 401k. This brought me to just under 10 Bitcoin split between private custody and a 401k. I watched history repeat itself in the fall of 2020, but this time, I had some real exposure to better gains. I watched as my life savings went from around $100,000 to over $600,000 at the top of the cycle in early 2021. Then, I watched as my roughly $600,000 returned to around $170,000 during the bottom of the bear market in 2022. That was tough to witness, but I looked at it and said “I’m still up from where I started.” Once you get past a certain amount of savings, the big swings hit differently. Even during the bear market, I knew I still had at least a 1-year emergency fund, which comforted me.Fast-forward to a short while ago when Bitcoin hit 92k. I soon realized that with the equity in our home and my exposure to BTC, my wife and I were finally millionaires. We’re still driving the same beater cars to work. I rarely sell our BTC, but when I do, I try to buy things/ experiences that will improve the quality of life for my family, and I’m quick to replace what I sold. I make a middle-class income so I don’t often need to sell for the things I want/ need. Whenever I see a used car, 4-wheeler, boat, or new home I’m tempted to buy, I think to myself “I’d rather have Bitcoin.” The peace of mind it offers far outweighs the benefits of more junk. I used to tell myself I’d pay off my mortgage using proceeds from Bitcoin, but my mortgage is only about 9% of my take-home pay, and the interest rate is lower than inflation. I believe we will see 250k-280k by the end of next year, and the cycle will start again. One downside to having such a nice safety net is that work has become very tedious. I have very little motivation to put in the extra time or to go “above and beyond.” I do my job, I do it well, I make money for my employer, but I’m not pushing for more like I would if I were still broke. I’ll post again in four more years with an update. I’m hoping to retire by 2030-2034. Stay safe out there, and only invest in Bitcoin what you’re willing to keep! *edit* There seems to be a ton of questions regarding whether or not I was actually broke so let me clarify. "Broke" to me means you only have a couple thousand dollars to your name. You can be broke and be making money. There are people who make 150k a year and they are broke. In 2017, our household income was probably around 92-95k so just under 48k per person. Earlier in 2017, we bought a home with 100% financing because we couldn't save up a deposit. That home was worth around 135k. We had a 4.5% mortgage rate on a 15-year mortgage. We only had $1,000 in an emergency fund when we first started buying Bitcoin. We managed to cut back on some expenses and gradually bought Bitcoin all the way up and down. I don't think we became wholecoiners until the market crashed. I seem to recall the second Bitcoin was purchased aound $4,000, and that money was from a tax return check. That's one of the only ways broke people get a nice chunk of money at once. Trump raised the child tax credit so we got a nice check from that. We sold our house in 2020 for a little over 200k, so we walked away with like 65k. We then put 25k deposit on a new house, bought some furniture, riding lawnmower, etc and when the dust settled we still had about 30k leftover. That's where the bulk of the Bitcoin came from. My (f28) finance ( m28) Alex has a bff ( Dani 28) since they were 4. She’s not like the usual Reddit bff. She’s a lovely sweet person who has never crossed boundaries with Alex or their two other friends Marcus and Daniel. The four are very close. Dani is gay and always was. She is very much a woman but likes to dress in jeans and t shirts and not in any feminine clothing. She is lean tall has short hair and is just one of the boys in a lot of ways. This weekend was Alex Bachelor party. All four plus two other of Alex friends went along. It was to a costal town that’s well know for hosting bachelor and bachelorette parties but there’s no strip club or anything. They stayed in a b&b and have scuba diving and kayaking planned. First night went ok dinner restaurant and night club and home. Last night was the issue. They did the nightclub and headed back to the house. Marcus and Daniel who are both single brought back two girls from the nightclub and got busy in their bedrooms. The rest were drinking in the living room but things got a bit loud and the two friends started complaining that they didn’t get to go to a strip club and never got to see t*ts and ass. They were blaming their wives and calling them names. Dani told them to shush as it was ruining the mood and they both thought it would be funny if they saw Dani’s body naked to make up for it. The thing is Alex joined in and they stripped her. She was screaming loudly and Marcus and Daniel came running and rescued Dani and put her in the a bedroom with the girls and had a fight with the three men. Daniel doesn’t drink due to a chronic medical condition and the medication he is on. So they packed up and took Dani and the two girls and left the other three. Dani was hysterical and Marcus wanted her to go to the police but she wouldn’t. She was afraid to go home so they ended up dropping the girls off and taking Dani to her parents which was an hour away. Marcus was at my door at 7am this morning and he told me what happened that if he ever sees Alex again he’s afraid of how things could go. He told me that if he can convince Dani to press charges he will . Then he left . Alex returned about 3 this afternoon. He was a ting normally until I told him Marcus has visited. He was very nervous and tried to play down what happened as a joke that got out of hand. I’m devastated. I heard him out but he knew I wasn’t accepting what he was saying. I told him Dani may be going to the police and he got very panicked and pale. He said she had him blocked and he wanted to go talk to her. I told him she wasn’t at her place as she was too afraid he or his “ buddies” would turn up there. I asked him to leave and he didn’t want to go but I insisted. He was crying saying it was a prank that got out of hand. I heard him out only as a courtesy to our two year relationship but I’m done. I don’t know this man. I don’t know if I should reach out to Dani or just do nothing. Marcus and I have been in constant contact and he agrees that I have no option but to end things. I don’t know where to start with cancelling everything as the wedding was in 5 weeks but it seems trivial compared to what Dani is going through right now. I can’t reach out to my friends yet as I’m ashamed. I did tell my parents and my brother and they have been wonderful. My brother brought his friend with him when he came to stay and today both of them packed up every bit of my exes stuff and took it to his parents house. Ex was there and just asked if that meant I was finished with him and my brother said yes and did he really expect any other reaction? His father intervened and told ex not to say anything more. He told my brother to tell me to contact him on cancelling the wedding. I’m not contacting his father ever! My parents are handling cancelling the wedding and my father got in to my cousin who is a lawyer and he is going to help and advise me as needed. I’ve to disentangle myself from ex on leases bank accounts savings and such although my brother made me transfer all of my money from joint accounts savings and daily accounts to my own account. It’s a mess . I tried to ring Dani but she isn’t up for speaking to anyone so I just text her that I was there for her and that I had broken up with Alex. She hasn’t replied and I don’t expect she will. She’s in a bad way apparently. Daniel spent three hours with me today. There’s a lot going on but I’m afraid to say too much for fear of damaging any court case. Just to say there are two videos of the “incident” . One by Jeb (one of the two friends) a lot of it is chaotic but the last part is clear and telling apparently. The owners of the rental house apparently have gotten involved and have footage but I can’t say more. When Marcus left me he went to both those guys wives and told them what happened. Jebs wife has been “ very helpful” apparently and she has split from him. The other guys wife too has left him. Things are going how most of you want them to go that’s all I will say . I got a call from Dani. Daniel has been ever present and I’m guessing it was because he knew she was going to call. There’s a lot more to the story. The first night was normal as I said but in the Saturday Alex Jeb and their friend decided not to go scuba diving with Dani Daniel and Marcus. Dani was feeling very hungover and gave up after an hour and went back to the airb&b. She walked into the living room to find all three guys engaging in sexual acts with two women. Jeb shouted at her to get out as this was costing them a fortune. The women were escorts. She left and went back to the boat and only told Marcus what she saw. When they all went back later Alex told her to not tell me as it was just his last bit of freedom. She told him she was disgusted with him and that he wasn’t free. She told him she would have to think about what to do. Marcus convinced her to stay another night as he and Daniel had met the two girls the night before and were seeing them again that night and if Dani wanted to leave then Daniel would have to take her as he was her ride and there wasn’t public transport in the tiny town. So Alex cheated as did the other two. Marcus told their wives that morning but not me. He was going to do it in stages as he knew I was in shock. The actual assault went further than Marcus told me also. And while Alex hadn’t actually done anything beyond pulling off her clothes ( unlike the other two ) he stood by and watched and did nothing to help her. She said she thought he had taken shrooms earlier but couldn’t be sure. Marcus and Daniel did rescue her but things had already escalated. She went to the police immediately she got to her parents. The Airbnb owners had also gone independently when they saw the footage. All three men are facing the consequences of their actions. Dani told me she was sorry she didn’t leave tell me immediately like she wanted to do. She is very distraught still I didn’t want to make things worse for her. I don’t think I am needed for any legal proceedings so I finally blocked Alex and his parents. The wedding is cancelled. And I’m just starting to disentangle myself from Alex on bank accounts and such. Here’s my issue. I’m feeling very angry towards Marcus. It feels like he didn’t really care about me. He stopped Dani from telling me so he could continue to shack up with the girl he met. He apparently feels guilty because if they had left Dani would not have been attacked. He didn’t do me the courtesy of telling me that Alex cheated that morning like he did with the other two wives . It’s not like he was sparing my feelings because my ex assaulting another woman was a pretty damn bad thing to hear. He didn’t tell me the full extent of the attack. Dani is still unsure if Alex wasn’t just “waiting his turn” or he all he was going to do was watch. I should have been told that asap. And not from Dani because the conversation was incredibly difficult for her. Daniel didn’t know about the escorts at all and didn’t know Marcus hasn’t shared the full story of what they saw when they burst in. Daniel has been my rock. I need some perspective here. Is it ok to be angry at Marcus? Is it misplaced anger? I’m pretty angry at Alex though and that’s all I feel towards him. Can anyone give me a different perspective im missing? She and I talk every day and message constantly. I didn’t expect that but it’s truly wonderful. She says she needs a good straight friend right now (jk) and honestly she is a great person and has been a huge support to me despite what she has been going through. I told her I posted here as I felt guilty as to tell my story I had to tell hers. She was ok with it. She is thinking of waiving her right to anonymity when the trial comes as she wants everyone to know she was raped and by who. Dani has quit her job moved to her parents full time and is in therapy. She’s just about ok. Surviving still rather than living but she is so strong and amazing. Justice moves slowly here so there isn’t too much of an update on the legal process. Marcus was told however he would not face charges for assault for attacking the two actively attacking Dani. I went back to work and it was awful. I work for a tiny start up. Oscar who works there is friendly with Marcus and my brother. We are all into martial arts and attend the same Dojo. So I’m getting a lot pity. I’d have been ok with sympathy or empathy but being pitied sucks. Still it’s better than being home all day doing nothing. Daniel gave me space as I asked and he is truly a good guy. There is nothing romantic there at all though. I’m not in a fit state for anything like that and won’t be for a very very long time and he is just a good guy. No ulterior motives. We text a bit and he is in a lot of contact with Dani. I got a letter in the mail from Alex. Said he held out hope while I hadn’t blocked him but once I did he was distraught. He told me he doesn’t want to freak me out by turning up in person and I know that wouldn’t look good for him anyway but he just wanted to tell his side of the story. He admits he was angry at Dani because she told him he either told me about the cheating or she would but he knew he was totally in the wrong. He knows I’ve been angry with him and he is desperate to talk it out. I probably feel too much anger towards him but find it hard not to. He is still feeling very guilty over making Dani stay. I don’t understand why I feel so angry towards him. It’s not on the level of anger I feel towards Alex by any means but I’m still hesitant to talk to him. I gave my wedding dress and shoes to my own best friend Milly to sell or donate or just get rid of. She has lots of sellers accounts on different platforms as she buys and resells collectibles a lot. She put my wedding dress veil shoes and other accessories up for sale with a view to me getting some money back. Cancelling the wedding meant me losing a lot of money . Anyway it all sold immediately at a really great price and when Milly looked at the buyers info it’s my exes fathers business account. We are assuming it’s Alex my ex who bought them and not his father. Milly wanted to know what I wanted her to do. Does she pack up the stuff and send it to him or do I want to confront him? I asked Milly if she could cancel the purchase and she is checking that out but even if that is possible I wouldn’t want it to damage her sellers rating online. I am unsure why he would do this. I know he still wants us to get back together but that is never happening. Should I just let the sale go through and ignore it? It feels weird and upsetting. I feel like he is still torturing me and this is just a way of getting my attention and I have had zero interaction with him . Any advice welcome. EDIT Alex knows Millys selling accounts. Final update Oct 19, 2024 I wish this was a better update but it’s as close to closure as I can get I think or I hope. Dani has just crashed. All her bravado and fight is gone and she is seriously struggling. She is with family and getting treatment but has cut everyone off including me. And I get it. I’ll respect whatever she wants. My therapist says it’s probably for the best as our journeys are not the same and healing separately right now anyway is not a bad thing. I hope we reconnect in the future. I will miss her a lot. I decided to speak to Marcus. It was emotional for both of us. But I got answers. That morning after he told me and went on to the other two wives he fully intended to come back to me again after. Two things happened. Jebs wife was logging into their cloud to see could she get pics or evidence in case Jeb tried deleting and Marcus was helping her. They called the police and they were there and Marcus was caught up. He left to go home to shower quickly and then intended to come to mine. At his place the police were waiting to question him for the assault on Jeb and the other guy. They immediately had made statements to the police but omitted their assault on a Dani. So he gave a statement and was questioned further. And he knew Alex was back by the time he left the police station. Marcus had done some pretty significant damage to both those guys and Marcus is basically a martial arts expert. He even did boxing and MMA style competitions in his teens. He didn’t know if he would be charged or not at that point. He knew Alex was back because Daniel told him. At the time he didn’t think much of that. But he says he wasn’t afraid of Alex hurting me as I too have been doing martial arts with my brother since we could barely stand. Our Dad got us into it. So Alex doesn’t do any thing like that so Marcus knows id be able to defend myself. (I had taken down a guy trying to rob me last year very easily). He admits he didn’t think really of the emotional impact so much at that stage but he was dealing with a lot and he really was. He didn’t tell me any of this when we were texting in the early days and was genuinely trying to be there for me. I forgave him for that morning as I was wrong. I didn’t know but I do now. He also told me he is dealing with a lot of guilt over Dani and convincing her to stay and some guilt towards me too because if Dani and Daniel left he wasn’t intending to go with them as he was really into the girl he met the night before. He knows now that would have basically been condoning Alex behavior if he had stayed and they left. He said he didn’t but that he really liked the girl. The girl really didn’t want any further contact with him after what happened so I guess he got some kind of Karma there? He did have a bit of a bombshell for me. He says there are rumors Alex is looking to get a deal where he would plead guilty to lesser charges and get probation. And it seems like he may get that. It’s early days though so it will probably be several months before that’s confirmed if it’s true. He also says that there are lots of snippets of info about Alex floating around and he thinks Daniel has never cut contact with him. He’s pretty sure in fact. He says there’s no way some of this stuff could be known unless it came from Alex and it’s Daniel dropping these snippets of info apparently. He said he confronted him and he denied it but he says he knew by his reaction he was lying. So he told me he is likely feeding information back to Alex too and to be cautious. It was one of those little things that just triggered and all the stress, anger, resentment and other negative emotions we have been feeling were just completely taken out on one another. I took the kids and left afterwards. I refused to come home until my husband got his head out of his ass and talked to someone about all of this. The silver lining to the big blow out was it did spur my husband on to start dealing with everything. He has been to his doctor and has been prescribed medication and he has been looking for a therapist. He did a session with one, but didn't particularly click with them. He is going to pursue others as our finances allow. My husband and I discussed his drunken demand for paternity testing. I was able to express how hurtful that was to me. He apologized fully and has decided he does not need to have our sons tested right now. We've discussed options for what we'll do if doubt continues to linger on my husband's part, but as of now no testing is being done. He'll be looking for another after we catch up financially from paying the attorney and court filings. + Paternity testing is not happening unless we have a couple's counselor. That's a hill I am willing to both die and kill my marriage on if need be. It will put him at ease and will build his trust in you. After the decade we have been together, where we have had zero issues of infidelity, or untrustworthy behaviors between us, he should not have to be "building" trust in me. At this point in our relationship, the trust should be there. For me, the level of distrust that he has shown in accusing me of cheating (which, is what a demand for paternity testing is) means that our marriage is in deep shit. There simply is no meaningful romantic relationship without trust for me. Giving him "peace of mind" with a paternity test does not address the underlying trust issues. So he may get peace of mind in that regards, but doing so will cause me to doubt the entire foundation of our marriage. To be put simply, a paternity test without couple's counseling will lead to our divorce. He'll get 3 envelopes. 2 with positive paternity results. 1 with my petition for divorce. Yes. Speculate on why or how they're censoring it, not on it being a glitch. These different values I believe are important because they paint a picture of intent to hide the true data. It's bits of the real data slipping through the cracks. A number in the thousands is basically "Oh shit we got a winner". Thing is, you get the number by calculating the share price divided by the estimated future earnings per share. "For example, assume that a company has a current share price of $50 and this year’s earnings per share are $5. Analysts estimate that the company's earnings will grow by 10% over the next fiscal year. The company has a current P/E ratio of $50 / 5 = 10x. " Well Gamestop's at 190, let's say for what ever crazy fucking reason we're expecting future earnings per share to be at 5 dollars per share. We're currently expecting around 1 dollar in January but for sake of argument let's pretend it's $5. $190 / 5 = 38. Okay interesting so far that makes sense for the USA calculation roughly. But HOW THE FUCK DO WE GET $6,347? It's impossible. Unless.. wait a sec.. $31,735 / 5 = $6,347 Could it be the true value of GME is actually $31,735 right now? I mean even if we use the 1 dollar per share earning thing from January, that's still assuming CURRENT VALUE = $6,347 per share.... It is my belief that based on these two numbers, the fact that they change depending on your IP + the float being at 248M, as well as THE MIND BLOWING INFORMATION contained within the post I'm about to link to in a second... It's that important to read. --------------------------------------------------- Sunday, 03/07/04 07:56:25 PM "Cellar Boxing" There’s a form of the securities fraud known as naked short selling that is becoming very popular and lucrative to the market makers that practice it. It is known as “CELLAR BOXING” and it has to do with the fact that the NASD and the SEC had to arbitrarily set a minimum level at which a stock can trade. This level was set at $.0001 or one-one hundredth of a penny. This level is appropriately referred to as “the CELLAR”. This $.0001 level can be used as a "backstop" for all kinds of market maker and naked short selling manipulations. “CELLAR BOXING” has been one of the security frauds du jour since 1999 when the market went to a “decimalization” basis. In the pre-decimalization days the minimum market spread for most stocks was set at 1/8th of a dollar and the market makers were guaranteed a healthy “spread”. Since decimalization came into effect, those one-eighth of a dollar spreads now are often only a penny as you can see in Microsoft’s quote throughout the day. Where did the unscrupulous MMs go to make up for all of this lost income? They headed "south" to the OTCBB and Pink Sheets where the protective effects from naked short selling like Rule 10-a, and NASD Rules 3350, 3360, and 3370 are nonexistent. The unique aspect of needing an arbitrary “CELLAR” level is that the lowest possible incremental gain above this CELLAR level represents a 100% spread available to MMs making a market in these securities. When compared to the typical spread in Microsoft of perhaps four-tenths of 1%, this is pretty tempting territory. In fact, when the market is no bid to $.0001 offer there is theoretically an infinite spread. In order to participate in “CELLAR BOXING”, the MMs first need to pummel the price per share down to these levels. The lower they can force the share price, the larger are the percentage spreads to feed off of. This is easily done via garden variety naked short selling. In fact if the MM is large enough and has enough visibility of buy and sell orders as well as order flow, he can simultaneously be acting as the conduit for the sale of nonexistent shares through Canadian co-conspiring broker/dealers and their associates with his right hand at the same time that his left hand is naked short selling into every buy order that appears through its own proprietary accounts. The key here is to be a dominant enough of a MM to have visibility of these buy orders. This is referred to as "broker/dealer internalization" or naked short selling via "desking" which refers to the market makers trading desk. While the right hand is busy flooding the victim company's market with "counterfeit" shares that can be sold at any instant in time the left hand is nullifying any upward pressure in share price by neutralizing the demand for the securities. The net effect becomes no demonstrable demand for shares and a huge oversupply of shares which induces a downward spiral in share price. In fact, until the "beefed up" version of Rule 3370 (Affirmative determination in writing of "borrowability" by settlement date) becomes effective, U.S. MMs have been "legally" processing naked short sale orders out of Canada and other offshore locations even though they and the clearing firms involved knew by history that these shares were in no way going to be delivered. The question that then begs to be asked is how "the system" can allow these obviously bogus sell orders to clear and settle. To find the answer to this one need look no further than to Addendum "C" to the Rules and Regulations of the NSCC subdivision of the DTCC. This gaping loophole allows the DTCC, which is basically the 11,000 b/ds and banks that we refer to as "Wall Street”, to borrow shares from those investors naive enough to hold these shares in "street name" at their brokerage firm. This amounts to about 95% of us. Theoretically, this “borrow” was designed to allow trades to clear and settle that involved LEGITIMATE 1 OR 2 DAY delays in delivery. This "borrow" is done unbeknownst to the investor that purchased the shares in question and amounts to probably the largest "conflict of interest" known to mankind. The question becomes would these investors knowingly loan, without compensation, their shares to those whose intent is to bankrupt their investment if they knew that the loan process was the key mechanism needed for the naked short sellers to effect their goal? Another question that arises is should the investor's b/d who just earned a commission and therefore owes its client a fiduciary duty of care, be acting as the intermediary in this loan process keeping in mind that this b/d is being paid the cash value of the shares being loaned as a means of collateralizing the loan, all unbeknownst to his client the purchaser. An interesting phenomenon occurs at these "CELLAR" levels. Since NASD Rule 3370 allows MMs to legally naked short sell into markets characterized by a plethora of buy orders at a time when few sell orders are in existence, a MM can theoretically "legally" sit at the $.0001 level and sell nonexistent shares all day long because at no bid and $.0001 ask there is obviously a huge disparity between buy orders and sell orders. What tends to happen is that every time the share price tries to get off of the CELLAR floor and onto the first step of the stairway at $.0001 there is somebody there to step on the hands of the victim corporation's market. Once a given micro cap corporation is “boxed in the CELLAR” it doesn’t have a whole lot of options to climb its way out of the CELLAR. One obvious option would be for it to reverse split its way out of the CELLAR but history has shown that these are counter-productive as the market capitalization typically gets hammered and the post split share price level starts heading back to its original pre-split level. Another option would be to organize a sustained buying effort and muscle your way out of the CELLAR but typically there will, as if by magic, be a naked short sell order there to meet each and every buy order. Sometimes the shareholder base can muster up enough buying pressure to put the market at $.0001 bid and $.0002 offer for a limited amount of time. Later the market makers will typically pound the $.0001 bids with a blitzkrieg of selling to wipe out all of the bids and the market goes back to no bid and $.0001 offer. When the weak-kneed shareholders see this a few times they usually make up their mind to sell their shares the next time that a $.0001 bid appears and to get the heck out of Dodge. This phenomenon is referred to as “shaking the tree” for weak-kneed investors and it is very effective. At times the market will go to $.0001 bid and $.0003 offer. This sets up a juicy 200% spread for the MMs and tends to dissuade any buyers from reaching up to the "lofty" level of $.0003. If a $.0002 bid should appear from a MM not "playing ball" with the unscrupulous MMs, it will be hit so quickly that Level 2 will never reveal the existence of the bid. The $.0001 bid at $.0003 offer market sets up a "stalemate" wherein market makers can leisurely enjoy the huge spreads while the victim company slowly dilutes itself to death by paying the monthly bills with "real" shares sold at incredibly low levels. Since all of these development-stage corporations have to pay their monthly bills, time becomes on the side of the naked short sellers. At times it almost seems that the unscrupulous market makers are not actively trying to kill the victim corporation but instead want to milk the situation for as long of a period of time as possible and let the corporation die a slow death by dilution. The reality is that it is extremely easy to strip away 99% of a victim company’s share price or market cap and to keep the victim corporation “boxed“ in the CELLAR, but it really is difficult to kill a corporation especially after management and the shareholder base have figured out the game that is being played at their expense. As the weeks and months go by the market makers make a fortune with these huge percentage spreads but the net aggregate naked short positions become astronomical from all of this activity. This leads to some apprehension amongst the co-conspiring MMs. The predicament they find themselves in is that they can’t even stop naked short selling into every buy order that appears because if they do the share price will gap and this will put tremendous pressures on net capital reserves for the MMs and margin maintenance requirements for the co-conspiring hedge funds and others operating out of the more than 13,000 naked short selling margin accounts set up in Canada. And of course covering the naked short position is out of the question since they can’t even stop the day-to-day naked short selling in the first place and you can't be covering at the same time you continue to naked short sell. What typically happens in these situations is that the victim company has to massively dilute its share structure from the constant paying of the monthly burn rate with money received from the selling of “real” shares at artificially low levels. Then the goal of the naked short sellers is to point out to the investors, usually via paid “Internet bashers”, that with the, let’s say, 50 billion shares currently issued and outstanding, that this lousy company is not worth the $5 million market cap it is trading at, especially if it is just a shell company whose primary business plan was wiped out by the naked short sellers’ tortuous interference earlier on. The truth of the matter is that the single biggest asset of these victim companies often becomes the astronomically large aggregate naked short position that has accumulated throughout the initial “bear raid” and also during the “CELLAR BOXING” phase. The goal of the victim company now becomes to avoid the 3 main goals of the naked short sellers, namely: bankruptcy, a reverse split, or the forced signing of a death spiral convertible debenture out of desperation. As long as the victim company can continue to pay the monthly burn rate, then the game plan becomes to make some of the strategic moves that hundreds of victim companies have been forced into doing which includes name changes, CUSIP # changes, cancel/reissue procedures, dividend distributions, amending of by-laws and Articles of Corporation, etc. Nevada domiciled companies usually cancel all of their shares in the system, both real and fake, and force shareholders and their b/ds to PROVE the ownership of the old “real” shares before they get a new “real” share. Many also file their civil suits at this time also. This indirect forcing of hundreds of U.S. micro cap corporations to go through all of these extraneous hoops and hurdles as a means to survive, whether it be due to regulatory apathy or lack of resources, is probably one of the biggest black eyes the U.S. financial systems have ever sustained. In a perfect world it would be the regulators that periodically audit the “C” and “D” sub-accounts at the DTCC, the proprietary accounts of the MMs, clearing firms, and Canadian b/ds, and force the buy-in of counterfeit shares, many of which are hiding behind altered CUSIP #s, that are detected above the Rule 11830 guidelines for allowable “failed deliveries” of one half of 1% of the shares issued. U.S. micro cap corporations should not have to periodically “purge” their share structure of counterfeit electronic book entries but if the regulators will not do it then management has a fiduciary duty to do it. A lot of management teams become overwhelmed with grief and guilt in regards to the huge increase in the number of shares issued and outstanding that have accumulated during their “watch”. The truth however is that as long as management made the proper corporate governance moves throughout this ordeal then a huge number of resultant shares issued and outstanding is unavoidable and often indicative of an astronomically high naked short position and is nothing to be ashamed of. These massive naked short positions need to be looked upon as huge assets that need to be developed. So sooner or later you won't have enough money to pay the borrow fee. And then you're forced to go bankrupt and sell all your assets and your house, and your car, and your boat, and your planes to pay for the watch. So that's what's going on with GME. But instead of 1 watch, it's billions and billions of shares. And they're making fake copies of shares that they don't even have. Sooner or later, they must buy back the shares. And at any cost. And they will be forced to sell everything they own to do it. Up until now we've only reverse engineered the idea and processes behind "HOW" they're doing it.
