I'm search of Captain Zero has been my favorite book for 20 years. Lord willing and the creek don't rise, I'll be homeless in 3 months. I've worked remotely since 2008, have no wife and no kids and I've decided to finally take advantage of this situation. I'm financially stable with decent savings and no debt. My house is up for sale and I should make a profit of about $100K. I've been slowly selling everything I own. I'm planning to leave here with only what will fit in my truck and my canoe. 1) Chernobyl - despite being widely regarded as one of the best historical dramas ever made, Craig Mazin was an obscure writer on the Scary Movie and Hangover franchises. Mazin went on to adapt The Last of Us, which is pretty funny when you watch Leslie Nielsen beating up a bunch of disabled people. 2) Joker - another Hangover alumnus (director this time), Todd Phillips was your average journeyman who made screwball comedies such as Starsky & Hutch, before earning a bunch of Oscar nominations for this depressing character study. A little less surprising once you tune into the film’s cruel sense of humor. 3) Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - almost nobody’s picturing Ian Fleming’s famous violent, alcoholic sociopath when they see Dick van Dyke in a flying car. I don’t know if Fleming wanted to court sweet Hollywood cash or if he was just tired of writing exceedingly grim material but it’s still very surprising. Bonus points as Roald Dahl went on to adapt a Bond novel for the screen. 4) Hugo - this film’s tone & aesthetic screams Tim Burton, down to a Christopher Lee cameo, but was actually made by Martin Scorsese, a quintessentially American filmmaker known for epic character studies & crime dramas. A family film about an old French director is especially jarring if you don’t know about Scorsese’s passion for early cinema. 5) Dune (1984) - a lesser example as it’s still a deeply weird movie based on a cerebral book, but the studio wanted an action-packed space opera and David Lynch had recently made The Elephant Man, which was notably devoid of galactic economics and religious guerrillas. This film taught Lynch not to take cash-in-hand jobs. 6) The Life of Chuck - if you only know Stephen King from his most famous books, this’ll come as a surprise. It’s a slow, heartbreaking, existential fable about the important things in life from a writer more interested in making audiences think than vomit. Currently living out of my 1997 Honda accord coupe, this is my second time being homeless. Current stint has been going on for 4 1/2 months . Before I was working a plumbing job, we had to buy our own vans for work and nine came with about a $500 note and an extra $500 for insurance. I was making good money at first but being on commison things slowed down during the winter season and I found myself struggling to pay rent. Then one night someone broke the windows of my van to get to my tools and I found myself unable to work and before I knew it I was on the verge of being evicted on my last month of rent with no money and maxed out credit cards. So what did I do? Well the only thing I could. Hopped into my accord, folded the backseats down and started back from square one. For 3 months I was in a bad rut, to be honest I was hoping to die because my family had given up on me, I have no friends, a dead end job and only emptiness inside. I took it out on my body in horrible ways by drinking and eating man vs food proportions. My every night go to was 2 Bacon double cheese bufords and two triple triple cheese burgers from rallys. I was already getting fat from overworking the plumbing job but i packed on an extra 20 lbs in these 3 months. Then one day I was inspired by a book and realized that I was finally done with throwing day after day, year after year of my life away. I decided im going to be a firefighter. Ive changed my life for a full 180 and now plan on going to college in August for my schooling with a full ride from FAFSA becauee of my situation since it's the last year I can qualify since the cut off is age 24. I now workout everyday , cardio and weight lifting, I follow a strict diet, I no longer drink, smoke cigarettes or drown out my life by doom scrolling . It's been rough to say the least but I refuse to let anything stop me from doing this. This car has been a constant struggle to keep up with, it started with my upper tie rod that was on the verge of snapping and made my car feel like I was driving on a bumpy back road. ($650) Then my starter failed, ($400) not too long after my lower tie rod snapped off while driving, towing and repair ($450). I thought I caught up on everything but well today while I was idling waiting for some orders I looked up and my car was over heating like real bad. I shut off the car and looked outside to see all my coolant spewed everywhere. Well after $100 tow I'm now getting ready for bed in a mechanics parking lot with another famous ohio blizzard waiting for the news tomorrow about how much it'll cost for what I think is a new radiator and if I'm really f*cked, the head gasket too. I got about $400 to my name. Life will keep coming at you, Every. Single. Day. For the rest of your life, but all I can say is no matter how bad things get. Just a small moment from my evenings after work. I drive to a quiet harbor, make a simple dinner from the convenience store, and read some manga in my van before heading home. Nothing fancy, but it’s one of my favorite ways to slow down after a long day. The van is tiny, but I built a small manga shelf and a cozy corner with warm lights. This might be triggering for some as it involves a traumatic situation. My girlfriend and I flew to South Africa (from USA) with her siblings and family friends to spread her mom's ashes and take vacation a few days after. In the run up she handed me a little book almost like a cheat sheet for how to handle everything which I thought was funny and cute. In the booklet it stated she specifically wanted "sibling time/alone time" on ash spreading day, as well as to take photos and videos in the background. On the day of ash spreading I went to the spot where we spread the ashes in a separate car from her and her siblings, allowing her to have time with them as she requested. We spread the ashes, I took some photos and videos like she wanted, and went about our day. When we returned to the hotel room I commented "I thought you handled today with a lot of grace" to which she replied "how would you know you weren't there?". We chatted back and forth and I didn't want things to blow up so I excused myself to the family room portion of our suite we were sharing with other people so I could process the misunderstanding. I apologized multiple times for the misunderstanding and mistake where she seemed to accept it... then her siblings texted her asking if something was off because they felt like she was quiet at lunch and she abruptly left the hotel room to go talk to them. Upon returning she told me I needed to book a flight home back to the USA and refused to negotiate or talk about any other arrangement. I gave her options where I could join the rest of vacation and stay on the couch in the shared hotel suite, join the rest of the vacation and stay in a different hotel, or she could sleep on it and we decide in the morning. She instead chose to send me on the soonest flight home from South Africa back to the USA so I "wouldn't ruin her family vacation". The following morning, everyone went to the airport to catch a flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town to continue their vacation. On their way to the airport (9 of us were in the van) they proceeded to drop me off ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY near Lanseria airport in Johannesburg. I managed to catch an Uber across town to the airport main airport in Johannesburg and started the 36 hour journey home from halfway across the world. She kept checking in to make sure I was safe and got home; even though she left me on the side of the highway 8500 miles from home and had ZERO regard for my wellbeing in doing so. Fast forward a day she realized that I have ALL the pictures and videos of the mom's ash spreading ceremony and she is now begging for them; as I have a large number of files I set up a Google Drive so we could easily exchange photos as she has a large number of photos form when we went on safari and I would like them so I thought it would be easy and fair to exchange them via that platform. She refuses to use the platform and I feel extremely uncomfortable engaging with her after she broke up with me then left me on the side of the highway in a foreign country. AITAH for not sending her the photos? March 5 Update: Sorry for the lack of update, I have been in some pretty intense trauma therapy unpacking this situation and moving forward in my life. For those who have requested an update, she is now home but continues to refuse to use Google Photos. So we are still at a standstill, some people have said send it and be done, but others have stated stand your ground. As of now I do not plan to send until she compromises and does her part in sharing. Disclaimer: I understand there are many ways to think about this. I don’t think there is any one correct way though. I have read a lot of different viewpoints and this is my attempt at making sense of what I think about the very valid questions that have been raised about Shane’s character representation I see there are two (extremely valid) sides to this argument - The side arguing for “Accountability” in art This group wants to see POC characters as a “whole person”. They believe that if you ignore a character’s race or the struggles that come with it, you are erasing their humanity. They fear that the "colorblind" writing allows society to continue ignoring the very real systemic issues that POC face. The side asking for “Grace” in art They want the right to be as boring, unburdened, or "regular" as any other character. For them seeing a character who just gets to fall in love is the ultimate form of being "seen." They fear that if every POC character is required to be a "teaching moment" or a "trauma survivor," then POC readers will never have a place to truly rest. I’ve been following the critiques of Shane’s character - the idea that his Japanese-Canadian heritage is "shallow" or that the book fails by not addressing the racism he’d face in hockey. I understand where that comes from, but I think the "Accountability" side of the fandom is making a slight category error. They are looking at a Van Gogh and asking why it isn't a Botticelli. When we pick up a romance novel, we are signing a contract for escapism and joy. That is the "Van Gogh" style - it’s about the swirl of emotion, the internal feeling, and the "Happy Ever After." If you demand that every romance book carry the weight of a socio-political treatise or a deep-dive into systemic trauma, you are asking for a Botticelli - Literary Fiction Both are masterpieces, but they have completely different jobs. If you force a Van Gogh to have the rigid, realistic lines of a Botticelli, you lose the very "feeling" that makes the work resonate. For many people - especially 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants - Shane is actually highly authentic (Shane is 2nd 3rd [edit: as corrected by someone on comments] Generation). There are many who feel "culturally thin" in their daily lives. They are often "bullied" or made to feel "not enough" because they don't perform to their heritage in the way others expect them to. To see a character like Shane allowed to just exist - to be a hockey player, a lover, and a dork without having to carry the "backpack" of his “trauma” or an explanation of his "Asianness" - is a form of radical validation. It’s the "Grace" to be seen as a person first, and a representative second. We most definitely need the "Botticellis" of representation - the deeply researched, culturally specific books and we should keep pushing for more of them. But we also need the "Van Goghs" - the books where we can just see ourselves in a happy, escapist bubble. So to me, Shane isn't a "failed" attempt at deep representation - he is a successful attempt at representative normalcy. May be we can sometimes allow POC characters the same right to be unburdened and lighthearted in some genres of fiction that white characters have had for a while now? There is a weird sort of equality in that as well, right? Edit: I think instead of phrasing the two sides - “authenticity” and “grace” as two sides, I should have called it a spectrum, with those two kind of the end of the spectrums for POC character representation. Making it two groups, phrases the conversation into extremes and that was not my intent. I apologize for that! Edit 2: Thank you all for the discussion on the thread. I did not even touch on the fetishization, cause I don’t have anything different to say from what has been said already elsewhere. I think all three need to be discussed on their own. - The post isn’t clear on what it is talking about - the show or the book. I mentioned the book, but in my head I was thinking about both. For the cultural authenticity, I have seen discourse about both the show and the book. For trauma, people are definitely more vocal about the book, but I have heard criticism about how the show didn’t do more. I should have been clear and I apologize. Reflections about the feedback - About cultural “authenticity”, I think most people are ok with not always leaning into it. A lot of 2nd and 3rd gen readers are actually happy with both the show and the books for just letting the character be. I think there is a lot more acceptance for the spectrum of what can and should be shown for POC characters when it comes to cultural “authenticity”. - For race based trauma, most people are ok with the attention that the show gave to this matter. They feel that makes the character human, and I agree with that. As someone pointed out, it doesn’t have to be hard hitting depictions of trauma but just acknowledging basic truths of life. That is definitely something that all authors can and should think about - though I would point out that there are a few POC readers who are ok with none of it - because escapism (and I think sometimes that is also a valid point). - The responses related to the trauma topic on this post are not as extreme as some of the other discourse I have seen in other places. And I think the extreme voices are just a part of the spectrum I was trying to describe, they are also valid, but may be the show has done a good job for the kind of genre it is - And people talking about media literacy, it’s not about that, it was the ambiguity of my post. I want to apologize in advance for the long post but I don’t have instagram or TikTok, so I figured this was the place to do it. first, I want to say thank you to every single person who donated, shared his gofundme, mentioned his name, or simply smiled at his awkwardness on camera. Secondly, what a strange experience to be balling my eyes out while simultaneously watching a guy dress up as a puppy and someone getting their back cracked. Let’s give some background on my dad: he was an immigrant who came here as a baby from Mexico. he grew up in poverty in a rough part of LA. he has absolutely no help and overcame multiple challenges and trauma while remaining a humble, kind, and gentle person He would casually mention things like cutting Van Halen’s hair or having the Olsen twins as his clients when they were kids without realizing how impressive it was. he was a barber instructor who inspired so many people who otherwise felt they had no future. How he passed: my dad was in beginning stages of liver failure and ultimately got the flu, his heart could not withstand it, it was a shock to all of us. Effects of this community: My Dad lived a life where he worked for everything he had without help, the fact that in his passing so many people came together to help his family and his burial has so much significance to me, I don’t have word to describe it. personally, I live across the country on the east coast and was 3 weeks postpartum with his second grandson when he passed, between that and planning a funeral I had no time to grieve until I sat and got to watch and hear his voice on game changers. I didn’t realize how much I needed the chance to grieve properly. All of the donations received are going to backpay all of his funeral and medical bills we were left with as well take care of his wife. He’s demanding I deliver it to him. We lasted about a month and last week he flipped out over the way I sipped my coffee and told me I had to leave. I thought he meant like we would pack up and figure out how to get me home. No he meant I needed to get out with all my shit in the middle of of a state park in New Mexico and figure it out. I was scared and pissed so I hurriedly packed everything and got out. A very nice older couple had heard the screaming and saw me with a pile of my stuff and asked if I needed help. I said yes and they said they would drive me to Albuquerque in their RV and we could figure out what would happen next. Well it turns out they are the sweetest people ever and We eventually came to the conclusion it would be easier for me to travel with them home to Kansas and Now they’ve allowed me to stay paying them insanely fair rent, food, etc… I just have to edit the wife’s book and help the husband with his guitar playing. Well it turns out in the hurry of packing I grabbed my ex’s watch That was his dads. I got in touch with him and told him I was sorry, it was truly an accident and I had no intention of keeping it-how would he like me to get it to him? He said I needed to meet him in Utah. I said that was ridiculous, I could send it to him. He said that it was too valuable to trust to mail or fedex and needed to be hand relieved. I said I was in Kansas and not coming to Utah, but I would return the watch to his brother when I go home in march. He said no the “only” solution was for me to drive it to him. I said I didn’t even have a car. He said “you’re probably fucking half of Lawrence, use one of theirs.” At that point I blocked him. The watch is pretty valuable and has a lot of sentimental value and I will return it. It was my oversight that I have it in the first place. Most people don’t know that van der Kolk has another book that presents a solution to the problem described in Body Keeps the Score - Treating Adult Survivors of Emotional Abuse and Neglect: Component-Based Psychotherapy, Hopper et al, 2019. Obviously, van der Kolk didn’t write it himself, although he wrote the foreword. The book was developed by teams of therapists who worked in a Trauma Center founded by van der Kolk. They provided therapy to children, adolescents and adult survivors of complex trauma for decades. The clinicians constantly reflected on and sought to improve therapy. They also collaborated on research with a focus on new and multidisciplinary modalities. Here is how van der Kolk described it: “At the Trauma Center we spend almost as much time examining our clinical work with our colleagues and supervisors as we do in direct care. We also have a tradition that requires most clinicians to simultaneously function as researchers.” (Foreword, xiii) Based on 40 years of clinical practice and research, the team developed a component-based therapeutic model for adolescents who experienced complex trauma. This became the basis for the adult version which is described in the book. It’s the first therapeutic model developed for adult survivors of childhood emotional abuse and/or neglect. For me, it’s a life-changing approach. Some unique qualities of the book: · The authors really ‘get’ what it’s like for adults who experienced complex trauma. I’ve never felt more completely validated, especially by therapists. · They understand how hard it is to work with complex trauma survivors. For example, there’s an eight page(!) questionnaire to screen prospective therapists. They discuss research showing therapists' ‘blind spots’ when evaluating themselves. They understand that getting into an intense therapeutic relationship will stress test their entire inner world. They know they will get things wrong because of internal issues/biases. As a result, they know they will have to rely on a highly experienced supervisor for therapy to succeed. Compare this humility and practical wisdom to what you get from the average therapist! Component 1 – Relationship The foundation of the model is the relationship that evolves between client and therapist. As our relational and attachment issues come up in therapy, it gets ‘messy’, and this is understood to be essential for healing. (‘We were hurt in relationships, so we need to heal in relationships.') Disruptions, ruptures and misattunements are as important and productive as developing a therapeutic bond. The therapist’s internal experience, and their own ‘relational challenges’, are of critical importance and supervision is essential to success. Component 2 – Regulation Unique emphasis on the holistic dysregulation of complex trauma survivors, not just the most salient kinds, e.g., angry outbursts. Focus on hypoarousal also – i.e. structural dissociation and being cut off from traumatic mood states. Highly multidisciplinary and creative, e.g. survivors develop detailed metaphors and imagery to engage with and regulate strong emotions. Component 3 – Parts Like IFS, parts work is central to the model. Goal is not “‘integration,’ or the collapse of self-states into one whole, but instead toward greater awareness, acceptance, and interconnectedness in parts of self.” Aim is to “tolerate difficult emotions, reflect on the adaptive purpose of the parts of self, be curious and compassionate, and ultimately harness the energy/vitality of those parts.” Component 4 – Narrative Incredibly powerful component. Aim is for survivors to understand how their entire existence was transformed in order to adapt to early life trauma. Goal is to achieve a holistic and coherent life narrative that transcends trauma and instills purpose and hope. Very creative approaches that came out of clinical practice, e.g. creating a ‘river map’ on a scroll to represent traumatic life events.
