I have just watched 500 days of summer and I 100% Summer is a complete psychopath.
Now I know that Summer was honest from the beginning and told Tom she does not want a serious relationship despite her many mixed signals. Tom was also helplessly in love with her and ignored all the bad signals from her. I am fine with all of that. Even though I kind of think the fact that Summer was so against love and "labels" but suddenly found the "right guy" for her is complete and total BS. Anyways that is not the reason why I think she is a terrible person. My main problem with this woman is that she invited Tom to her engagement party and she DOESN'T EVEN TELL HIM she's engaged and the party is because she is ENGAGED. Never mind the fact that just a few days before that, she was dancing and flirting with him and all. Like WTF???? Who does that??? At least have the courtesy to tell him you are engaged and not just let him think there is still some hope that you two will be together????? I was okay with her character during the whole movie except for this scene. How completely heartless can you be? and when Tom confronts her that she should've told him and why she danced with him she goes "because I wanted to". Um okay you selfish brat who doesn't care about anyone elses feelings. If I was you I would very much tell my ex who obviously still has feelings for me that I am engaged/with another man but no sending mixed signals seems to be my thing :) Overall it was still a great movie and I 100% would recommend to watch even though I hate Summer and thinks she's a psychopath. submitted by /u/Celesticalking to r/CharacterRant [link] [comments]

I didn’t understand 500 days of summer until I experienced it
I watched 500 Days of Summer this year and thoroughly hated it because I thought there were no redeeming qualities in Summer and that she crossed far too many ethical boundaries to be a likable protagonist. HOWEVER, I’ve since changed my mind upon being in Summer’s shoes. There was this great girl who I’d go on dates with, but she just wasn’t “the one”. And that’s ok. Never once did I ever say we were dating and we just would hang out & talk & do other things, but zero relationship was ever implied. Summer expressly said that Tom & her were just friends and made everything completely clear, so I now have switched sides altogether. This girl expected more and I had to break her heart a little bit. But, is it really my fault that she had her expectations misaligned in her own headcanon? Is it really Summer’s fault that the same thing happened to her? Now, I can actually watch the movie with the lens you’re supposed to have when you watch it. I just didn’t understand it before, but now I do. Thoughts? submitted by /u/dontrememberme5 to r/500DaysofSummer [link] [comments]

In 500 Days of Summer (2009), Summer calls Tom “Young Werther” during karaoke. It’s a nod to The Sorrows of Young Werther, a German novel about a man hopelessly in love with a woman who doesn’t feel the same. The reference subtly foreshadows Tom’s unrequited love for Summer.

Making my partner watch 500 Days of Summer on Valentines Day sent him into an existential crisis
I had literally the most perfect ever Valentines Day with a new partner of 7 months. Gifts were perfect on both sides, mood was set, candle light, home cooked dinner, romantic music, hot sexy times, the works. Then we sat down to watch a movie. He told me to pick, so I scrolled Disney +’s Valentines selection. I saw 500 Days of Summer on there which I’d watched once or twice over a decade ago and thought “oh that’ll be a fun one that isn’t too sickeningly soppy”. Edit: I feel a need to add I hadn’t seen it over a decade and did not remember the plot. We watched the movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it as it’s a really intelligent film. But once the credits rolled my partner just laughed in disbelief, and basically said it was a really really bad choice for a Valentines movie and that it was odd to choose a film that had such a negative message. He then went into some weird quiet depressed mood for ages afterwards and said he “wished he’d never watched that movie”. Naturally I felt AWFUL and kinda embarrassed too, as I’d picked it. It’s one thing to dislike a film but it’s another to have it send you into a spiral that has you wishing you never watched it. He even said now he feels like he shouldn’t get his expectations too high for our relationship due to the content of the plot. I still honestly feel so bad and weird about the whole thing even though he eventually calmed down and said he was fine and he had an amazing day etc. I just feel really awkward and embarrassed that I kinda ruined the whole loved up Valentines Day mood by choosing a film that wasn’t the romantic fairytale I guess he expected. Was my movie choice as awful and strange as he claimed? submitted by /u/Cosmic5iren to r/TrueOffMyChest [link] [comments]

In (500) Days of Summer, the expectation vs. reality scene is a fantastic piece of art
The film starts saying “this isn’t a love story” with the 2 main characters holding hands. As an audience member, you then experience the film through the eyes of Tom, so this first scene gives you hope throughout the film that they will end up together…even though you heard “this isn’t a love story”. Summer early on says she isn’t looking for anything serious, but Tom is always thinking this is his soul mate. Even after they break up, he thinks he is going to just win her back and as a viewer you are hoping the same thing. Then this scene comes and you truly experience the heartbreak as Tom. We feel his same hope and expectations, and slowly realize the reality of the situation is MUCH different than we imagined from the beginning. And it breaks Tom’s and our hearts simultaneously. Incredible. Edit: Thanks to u/xcellion for providing a link to the scene for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fL94BTrFhs the scene in question submitted by /u/biigpapasmurf to r/movies [link] [comments]

Can explain to me what the message of "500 days of summer" is?
note: I have never been in a relationship or anything, so i dont know if i actually understand this film According to me, what the film tries to convey is: There is more to life then just finding love dont romanticize someone you are interested in keep your expectations reasonable to avoid heartbreak having the same interests as someone else doesnt mean you are in love do not pursue romantic attraction when the other person is not interested or when they are incompatible with you submitted by /u/fapgod_969 to r/Letterboxd [link] [comments]

In "500 Days Of Summer" (2009), when asked who is going to sing karaoke next, Summer nominates Tom by saying "I nominate young Werther here!" This is a reference to the German poet Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther", which is about a doomed romantic relationship.

Tammy Zywicki's car broke down off of I-80 while on her way back to college. More than 60 people reported seeing her peering under her hood. Eight days later, her body was found wrapped in a blanket 500 miles away.
At just 20 years old, Tammy Zywicki was a senior at Grinnell College in 1992. She had recently returned from a summer spent studying abroad in Madrid. Majoring in art history and Spanish, Tammy would soon be starting an internship at the Art Institute in Chicago, with plans to pursue a career in sports photography or teach Spanish after graduation. Then a routine trip back to campus would change all of that. Two days before her disappearance. Tammy and her brother, Daren, road trip back to their respective universities from their home in New Jersey. They make a stop in Pittsburgh to visit family and then head to Evanston, Illinois, to drop off Daren at Northwestern. During the trip, they experience car trouble with Tammy’s white Pontiac, but they thought they had figured out the issue. Tammy and her brother arrive at Northwestern on August 22. Tammy stays the night with a friend, with plans to head out for Grinnell the next day. The day of her disappearance. The next morning, Daren checks her engine before she departs on the last leg of her trip. He reminds Tammy that if her car stalls, to pull over at a rest stop. Tammy does not even make it halfway on her journey west before car trouble appears to have befallen her again. More than 60 people report seeing Tammy looking under the hood of her car that day off the exit for Utica, IL. Reported tips to law enforcement suggest that 26 different cars pulled over to help her, but Tammy never arrives at Grinnell. Tammy’s parents wait for her to call and say she is fine, but that call never comes. With her parent’s constant urging, the police reluctantly begin to investigate her disappearance. Her car, which now had been towed, could not be tested for prints because of chain of custody failures. The only thing missing appeared to be her purse and her camera. There was no sign of a struggle. And at the time, law enforcement claims to have had several leads in Tammy’s case, but none resulted in an arrest. 8 days after Tammy goes missing. A man is driving his pickup truck near Joplin, MO—500 miles from where she was last seen—when it begins to rain. He pulls to the side of Highway 44 to cover up the tools in the bed of his truck. Once out of the truck, he detects a foul order and notices a red Kenworth Truck Co. blanket wrapped in duct tape. Inside the red blanket was a female body wrapped in a white sheet—silver duct tape wrapped around both ends of the blanket. It was Tammy and she had been stabbed to death. Today. It's been nearly 30 years since Tammy disappeared from the side of the road and was murdered, and dumped the next state over. In that time, two leads have persisted in her case. First, multiple people have reported seeing a tractor-trailer on the side of the road with Tammy. The truck had two brownish-orange stripes on both the tractor and the trailer. Second, the man with the truck was approximately 6 feet tall with dark, bushy hair and estimated to be between 30-45 years old. It was also discovered that Tammy's Canon 35mm camera and a musical wrist watch with an umbrella on its face, that played a tune were missing from what was recovered from her car. Tammy would have celebrated her 50th birthday this year. Her family is still hoping to find answers as to what happened to Tammy and that her killer will be brought to justice. Many people missed the point of (500) Days of Summer (and not because they felt bad for Tom) [SPOILERS]
I've noticed two general stages of commentary around this movie: First, initial reactions to a first watch tend to side heavily with Tom, the hopeless romantic whom was scorned by the heartless villain, Summer. Second, a reaction to the initial reaction, and upon rewatch, people have widely recognized that this sympathy for Tom is entirely misplaced. Tom had movie-inspired fairy tale ideas about love and romance that he projected onto Summer, despite her telling him from the start that she wasn't interested in anything serious. You aren't supposed to "side" with Tom. You're supposed to learn from his character's misguided, albeit mostly innocent, attitude towards romance. I mostly agree with this analysis of the film as it relates to Tom. BUT Almost invariably when I watch this commentary play out, people come full circle to ignoring the analysis as it relates to Summer. And this mostly comes through in the insistence that "Summer told him she wasn't interested in anything serious! It was unreasonable of him to ignore that out of sheer romantic optimism!" That argument works to an extent, but only up until a critical scene about halfway through the movie. (Which should come as no surprise to the aspiring screenwriters out there - the midpoint sequence being the plot's "point of no return"). Tom punches a guy at the bar in a childish, misguided attempt to romantically "defend Summer's honor." The guy knocks Tom out. Later, Summer rightfully calls him out on this, saying that she never asked him to do that and somewhat implying that he was doing it more for himself than for her, both of which are very true. But what happens next is critical. Tom lays it all out. He tells her straight up that he's not interested in continuing the relationship as anything less than serious. He basically tells her that if all she wants is something casual, then this has got to be over. And he leaves. Now, if Summer really wasn't looking for anything serious, then obviously there is only one thing that should have happened at this moment. They break up. It's done. It's over. Tom got foolishly over-invested because he watched too many Disney movies. Pack it up. Nothing more to analyze. But of course that's not what happens. Summer goes back to him and essentially tells him she's ready to start treating this more seriously. Obviously, this doesn't necessarily absolve Tom for everything that happens afterward, let alone anything that had already happened up to that point. But it does mean that any analysis reducing Summer's character arc to "she always said she wasn't interested in anything serious" just isn't accurate. I'm honestly not sure how that idea got so much traction anyways, considering how she gets engaged just months after breaking up with Tom. It's not like she went from "not interested in anything serious" to "I want to get married" in that short span of time. Rather, Summer didn't know what she wanted, because she didn't know what love is supposed to really feel like – i.e. the exact same emotional conflict that defines Tom's character arc. We're even given explicit analogs for these parallel conflicts in how both characters take their cues from movies. Tom obviously has the famous Disney musical scene after he just had sex. But Summer also has a moment like this. Her decision to take the plunge and breakup with Tom is triggered by seeing the end of The Graduate, watching the protagonists in that movie come to the awkward, disconcerting realization that what was passionate, romantic fun just moments ago is now just charmless, cold reality. The biggest knock against Summer's character that actually is justified is the whole wedding scene. Even without delving into it too critically, it's pretty cold to have what is, objectively, a romantic night reconnecting with your ex at a wedding, whom you then invite to a party without telling them at any point that you are not only in another serious relationship, but engaged! That's not cool any way you slice it. Doesn't make Summer evil by any means, but it's not cool, especially since nobody reasonably disputes that Summer wasn't aware of what impression this may have had on Tom. She's not stupid, and she knows Tom over-romanticizes things. Additionally, while this is just my interpretation, it's heavily implied here that Summer was kind of doing that thing that many people tend to do right before they get married - talk to or meet up with the ex one last time to see for sure that the way you feel about the other person really is different, that you're making the right decision. Later when she's talking on the bench with Tom, and he's like "why did you do that?" all she says is "because I wanted to". Not a great answer...but if we keep listening, I think the true answer still came out in that conversation. She explains that she just didn't feel that "spark" with Tom, but she felt it with her fiance. She says she couldn't help that, which is perfectly fair and true, but it reinforces the idea that her "leading on" Tom during the wedding was her double-checking what that "spark" really felt like. And all of that rambling brings me to the point about (500) Days of Summer that people missed because they ironically focused too much on Tom. Tom "won". Romanticism won. Tom's whole ideology founded on the cliche "true love at first sight" was proven true in the end, in the spark that Summer felt for the other guy. The great irony of Tom's arc is that he spent all that time brooding over how Summer basically destroyed his childlike sense of wonder and faith in love, when really she proved it true...she just didn't love you, man. submitted by /u/Cinematry to r/movies [link] [comments]
