Share ko lang experience namin running a super niche hobby business focused on blind box toys here locally in the PH and how did we start it. I never thought na magiging full time business ko na sya for 3yrs already and growing. Kasi I am Nurse by profession and wala sa family side ko may knowledge or background sa business talaga. I was assigned abroad (UK) during the height of COVID (2020) Magisa lang ako dun, Sa first 2yrs (2020-2022) being alone sobrang home-sicked and stressed talaga work ko dun as a NURSE. One time, during one of my rest days i stroll around the city and stumbled upon a collectible Shop. I bought 2 figures lang out of curiosity and the experience opening a blind box. Hangang halos every week na ako bumibili online kasi nakakatanggal ng stress, from 2 figures nagulat nalang ako ang dami na pala nila in less than 6months hehehe. nasobrahan ata yun happiness ko sa pagcollect. Mahirap kaya mag isa abroad! hehe Now, my partner is doing online business for almost 15yrs already sa PH, told me na if ever gusto ko daw magbiz paguwi ko susupport nya ako and yun nalang daw gawin ko na biz para magsimula. So sya talaga nakakita ng opportunity na why not turn my hobby into business pag nakauwi na ng pinas. So to test the market and demand, Pinabenta ko muna sa kanya lahat ng mga unwanted figures sa collections ko and kept mga favorites nalang (so nagdownsize ako) Wala kami nilabas na capital. We noticed na, nabebenta naman pala sya kahit pakonti konti, pero instead of jumping agad, we spent about a year pa just observing the flow of the market & demand first before risking it. After having a good result, we launched our online shop early 2023 with small capital and small inventory muna. We also tried different setups along the way, Aside sa online, first nag consignments kami sa toy retailers, Glass Cabinet rental sa mall and then selected Toy Events/Bazaars. Just like other businesses meron talaga ups and downs, lessons, mistakes but i make sure na we learn from the experiences. Hanggang ngayon unexpected parin na yung dating stress relief hobby ko lang naging full-time na for 3 years. i'm a smart person. i don't do things that put me in danger and i'm very safe and practical about spending money...until the last 2 weeks. i discover blind boxes on tiktok live and i've spent well over $500 in mere days. i don't know what happens to me, but the community within the livestreams, the excited hosts, the cart full of cute plushies and figures i don't see offered in stores near me, and the satisfaction of seeing what you purchased opened immediately is so...intoxicating. i bought one single plush. that's all it took and now my bank account is lower than it's ever been. i feel shame. i feel guilt. and yeah, i feel really silly because why am i, a 31 year old full-time worker, spending hundreds on rabbit plushies and cute figures that'll just be put on a shelf? i have a collection of anime figures and other cute things, but i got those over a period of years - not 18 in 10 days. i have never been this affected by online shopping in my life. i promised my fiancé i would stop and i did for about 10 hours until i caught a live stream and the words "exclusive" and "buy 2, get 1 free" were said and $30 later, i broke my promise and was even deeper in the whole. it's hard not to be on tiktok and although i've muted certain phrases and unfollowed multiple accounts, nothing is stopping me from manually searching for it and getting right back in the mess. i am scared i've developed a problem and that i have absolutely zero self-restraint. hell, zero self-respect. i've justified the past week and a half as the fact that i have disposable income and if my bills are paid, why not use the rest? but that's not sustainable. i am getting married in may. we have so much left to pay for. and yet, i was on a stream minutes before finding this subreddit. i don't know if the time i've felt this way is worthy of an intervention, but man, i could really use any advice. i'm rocking $115 in my checking right now. please never let me experience this again. i can't do it. submitted by /u/jzmnflwr to r/shoppingaddiction [link] [comments]

My girlfriend loves them, and I truly cannot understand why. She spends so much time and money on Smiski, Popmart, Sonny Angel, Sanrio, etc. and cannot explain the appeal herself beyond "they're cute." Her Tiktok FYP is full of unboxing and haul videos, and every time we go to a store that has some sort of mystery item she will at least attempt to buy it, regardless of what the contents may be. I see blind boxes in vending machines and grocery store checkouts. They have them for collectibles, clothing, books, snacks, games– nearly everything. I will admit that I am not immune to the siren song of collectibles, as I myself have a sizable collection of hand-painted d&d miniatures and vintage/secondhand dolls and action figures. I understand the appeal of completing a set or finding something you've been looking for. However, I at least purchase these intentionally or receive them as gifts, and there is an element of creativity in it as I generally paint the miniatures or restore the toys. I can justify spending money on something that you can do something with that genuinely makes you happy. I do not understand the idea of paying money for something when there's a good chance you'll get something you don't actually want. It's especially messed up that blind boxes are primarily marketed to children. A few weeks ago I went to the toy store to look for a gift for my friend's toddler. Despite going to a small local shop, almost an entire wall was covered in blind boxes– bag charms, plushies, plastic toys, everything. It's a predatory business model– it pushes parents to spend more money on multiple toys in order to get the one their kid actually wants, gets kids addicted to the gambling aspects, and creates tons of waste both through thrown away packaging and unwanted products. Some stores at least have an exchange policy, so you can swap out an item you didn't want for one you do, but the majority do not and it's insane to have to take that extra step instead of simply buying the thing outright. I tried bringing these points up to my girlfriend when she was looking at a gacha machine at the mall. It was asking $24 for a randomized four-inch vinyl statue, only three of which she actually liked. I asked her, if the mystery element was gone, if they were all just sitting unwrapped on a shelf with a $24 price tag, would she pay full price for one of the figures? She admitted she wouldn't, and when I asked if she was paying extra for the experience of not knowing if she'll get the thing she wants or not, she said yes. Despite this, she spent the money, and managed to get one of the figures she wanted. I feel like I'm crazy. It's me, I'm the new blind box. 😄 Not a bad get for my first blind box. I'd definitely get a second. Some of the boxes are indeed damaged, but unfortunately the glow in the dark Eyeball Joe's head broke off & Frankenraph has some broken pieces loose in there. My wife actually recorded me & made me rate them. Sorry, I'm not going to upload it. It's too embarrassing, but I will say I thought the box was a solid 7 over all. I would say an 8, maybe even 9, but the broken parts knocks it down. I think it's around $500 MSRP, I might be a little off though.
