So I've always grown up wearing hand me downs and lately am trying to style myself more. I cant really afford at aritzia, lulu, dynamite, etc. So I stick with more thrifted or cheaper brands. Lately I’ve noticed so many trends like the “clean girl aesthetic” or the “old money style.” Every few months there’s a new one, and suddenly it feels like everyone is reshaping themselves to fit into it. Hair, makeup, clothes, even the way you drink your coffee can become part of an “aesthetic.” I don’t really get it. I’ve noticed a trend of more women doing clean girl makeup looks with almost no visible eyeshadow and no bold lips or anything. A lot of people just doing mascara skin tint and blush and calling it a day. Then i look on the makeup subs and women get ripped to the shreds for doing visible makeup like elaborate eyeshadow looks, black eyeliner on the water line, purple or red lipstick. Anything that’s not a nude or light pink people go in on the women and say she’s doing too much. I always see comments about how her makeup looks soooo 2016 and dated if she does colorful looks or bold lipstick. So this makes me think that women are just getting fed up with the comments and doing mascara and lipgloss to appease society who doesn’t like seeing visible makeup. What do you guys think. Whenever I look on insta or youtube or pinterest I see girls with white bedding and white couches and white bath towels and I'm like... how???? I tried having white bedsheets for a year and even though I washed them weekly (WEEKLY!!!) with bleach the center where I slept inevitably started to get discolored. Every time I have my period, no matter how carefully I try to dry off, I wind up getting at least one spot of blood on my towels after I dry off from the shower. And I know we all at least snack on the couch if not eat full meals, plus sometimes sitting or lying on the couch watching movies during my period might result in a leak. Hell, even my white hand towels in the bathroom don't stay looking white forever. The best result I've gotten is with a designated whitening powder in the wash, but even then my t-shirt armpits discolor after a couple wears from the deodorant and sweat. I shower and wash my hair at least every other day, I don't have an insanely heavy period, and I clean my apartment regularly but it still feels impossible. So I am the lowest maintenance girl that probably walks the planet. Makeup consists of concealer bc my face is breaking out. Hair is too long and thick to really want to do it every single day. Skincare is face wash and an oil free moisturizer, dark circle cream, and body lotion in the winter when it gets super dry outside. Wardrobe consists of flannels and t shirts, leggings and jeans or shorts when I’m feeling up to it. bottom line: I was raised by my dad and didn’t get a whole lot of “girl time” with any female adult figures. I (22F) have come to conclusion that no matter what I do I simply won’t be able to live up to being tidy or clean or fresh and natural like all the rest of the world, and it’s so exhausting. I’m sure at least someone else out there has a hard time with this but living in a world where there are restock videos of fresh clean organized products, and makeup looks for “natural” beauty or skin care routines that last an hour or even 30 minutes, when I can barely remember to brush my teeth. Some weeks I got days without a shower because I walk past the bathroom feeling zero energy to go in and go through the steps. My hair gets greasy fast and no hair training doesn’t work for everyone, and I’m sorry I can’t remember to put away my dirty dishes or remember to pluck my eyebrows or something else out of the tens of thousands of things girls are apparently supposed to do these days to be put together. And the other women of the world scream “support each other” as long as it’s clear you are putting in enough effort. It’s hard to exist these days when you are looked at as dirty or lazy when really you go through pits of self hate because you don’t understand why it’s so hard for you to just get the fuck up and wash your face or put on a fresh shirt. Not to mention the meal prep people who show up with a healthy well balanced meal who give the look at your bag of chips or fast food because you can’t remember or don’t have the energy to pack a meal or cook or care about eating at all. I wish I knew how to become more of a girl the “right” beautiful, adores kind of way. Anybody else?
