Hi chooms! Finally managed to get courage and release an update to TapePunk. I have these few past months spent countless hours learning more about VHS and camcorders, watching videos and also listened to feedback, but i've battled with some personal challenges so people have encouraged me to release these as is. I've always been a fan of media that uses contrast to make horror elements pop, and I've recently been getting into this relatively niche sub-genre. It's such a unique vibe that I think is relatively untouched; it's also distinctly "modern" which is uncommon in tropes/genres. It's kind of hard to create a new genre that's entirely distinct from preexisting ideas, but I think bubblegum horror is as close to that as you can get. It usually derives a lot of its personality from "girly" aesthetics (typically a lot of pink), but that's not a monolith. As a term, it's quite new (less than a decade old), and it isn't used very widely. You'll primarily see it mentioned in horror book spaces, but even then it's not common knowledge. If I'm being honest, this post is just propaganda in hopes of spreading awareness of one of my new favorite horror tropes (genre?). It kind of rides the line between trope and genre, but it's so specific that I think it's closer aligned to the former term. Feel free to correct me though. Only Acting [Kero Kero Bonito]: This music video was released during the album where KKB began to pivot towards a more punk/indie pop sound. This was quite a bit different from their previous work - primarily hyper or bublegum pop - and this song decided to take those concepts and create something legitimately unnerving. Needy Streamer Overload (AKA: Needy Girl Overdose): This is, like, the definition of this trope. It lives up to its name by essentially being an overstimulation speedrun. It actually has quite a bit in common with Only Acting (both speaking about hiding a darker "real self" behind a bubbly exterior); it even has a music video which shares quite a few similarities. Bunny [Mona Awad]: This story revolves around a clique of college girls who refer to each other as "Bunny." Nowadays, we say looks don’t matter, but the harsh reality is that everything matters. I see so many Instagram glow-up and transition reels where people go from looking dull or tan to suddenly having amazing skin, better hair, and a very aesthetic Gen Z look. I’m from a similar college environment, and everyone who looks so aesthetic on Instagram, there are many people in Mumbai who look exactly like that. But I honestly feel so outdated compared to everyone else. I don’t understand how people manage to look so put together with their fashion, hair, and skin. Has anyone here experienced a real glow-up like that? I genuinely want to improve and feel better about myself. If anyone has tips or has gone through something similar, please share.
