I used to love that stuff. Probably still do but we don't eat it. We are in Egypt now. Just got off a Viking Nile River cruise where there was no limit to foods and deserts. I just got diagnosed yesterday. The nurse I called said that insurance has mostly stopped approving the CGM for GDM and she knows that in particular that my insurance is picky. She offered to put in a script and we could see. They did put in a script for the testing strips, machine and lances which were not covered. Husband asked I call insurance and ask about the CGM so I did and they basically said that my doctor could put in a PA and once that was put in they'd be able to see how much they'd cover. Same with the other supplies. They said it'd take like 4 days to get everything done though and my doctor wants a weeks worth of readings starting today. AIO for breaking up with my boyfriend because he wouldn’t help with vet bills? I (27F) have a 12 male cat and he was recently diagnosed with arthritis and early on-set diabetes (with medication he could go into remission for this) I have had to take him to the vet multiple times in the past three weeks and my wallet is drying up. On Sunday I wake up and my cat’s front right leg is swollen and he won’t walk on it or eat anything. He’s extremely lethargic and I know something is wrong. The issue is I don’t get paid until next week and I am completely broke. Like zero dollars and zero cents broke. My boyfriend of three years (34M) currently lives at home and has like virtually no bills and the last time I needed help paying a big bill was willing to help me. (my wisdom teeth removal a year ago and I paid him back ASAP, like two weeks) He is not crazy wealthy but he is extremely good at savings and I know he has almost $20,000 in one account alone. I was extremely emotional because a swollen leg is a huge deal for a cat and combined with his other issues this could be deadly. I reached out to my boyfriend and asked if he’d be able to help and I’d pay him back when I got paid. He said no. And I understand he’s under no obligation to help me at all but the reasons he gave me for saying no were that I just needed to accept the my cat was old and I shouldn’t go into debt for my cat. He said he didn’t want me into debt for a cat and that it’s just a sad reality for older cats. I told him that if I could get my cat help he wouldn’t be dying. If I don’t take him to the vet he will die. He basically told me that while it’s sad it’s nothing I should go into debt for. I was crushed. This, plus some other smaller issues led me into breaking up with him. My friends think I am overreacting and that he doesn’t owe me anything and while I understand that, what I don’t understand is how he can be so cold. Am I overreacting for breaking up with my boyfriend? *UPDATE* I was able to borrow some money from my mom and one of my managers at work. I took my cat to the emergency vet and at first they thought it was a diabetic crisis but after doing a glucose test they ruled that out since his levels were normal and within range. They suspect maybe it’s an infection and gave me antibiotics and some pain medication. He was also dehydrated (but they think that’s because he was too tired to walk over to the water bowl. I have added more water bowls around the house and when I brought him home I placed him by the water and he drink some) My cat is currently in his comfy bed and sleeping since his medicine makes him drowsy and I will be monitoring him for any changes. Hopefully this resolves the swelling and we can go back to business as usual The bill total was $590.37 After I broke up with my (ex?) boyfriend on Monday I didn’t hear from him until this morning when he texted saying “how much do you need? I’ll give you the money” I honestly don’t know what to think now. I just wanted to clarify that all I wanted was to borrow money to get my cat checked out because I didn’t want him to be in pain. If we had gone to the vet and they told me euthanasia was the best option I would have moved forward with that. I have no intention of making my cat suffer because I want him to live forever. Hi everyone! We recently got a new cat and he has a million health issues. He was diagnosed with diabetes on friday (17.11) so we are still in the figuring things out stage. Karel (his name) is insanely bad with checking blood for glucose. He keeps turning and twisting, it’s really difficult. Yesterday I nicked his ear while he was trying to fight me so bad that there droplets of blood everywhere. I am trying to look into those monitors that you can attach to their bodies to monitor glucose levels but I am at a real loss at where to start, what monitor to choose and etc. We have a meeting on monday to discuss it with our vet and I am not sure the vet will agree with me that we need to install it. But we do need it. Additional info: he was neglected in his previous family so he is really smol and skinny. Idk if you can put monitors like that on cats this small. We are also located in Europe, Slovakia, so maybe you guys know where to get those monitors in Slovakia online cause I am not sure what’s the best option. I apologize for the wall of text this is a persistent problem. I hope this is the proper subreddit. Another subreddit banned me for posting this real and frequent occurrence because the situation I find myself in is illegal diabetic based discrimination and therefore doesn't happen. The movie theaters have a ban on cell phone on their property I can understand why they have this policy but there's problems with that aside from the fact the fact that leaving phones in a car means they could be stolen I don't have a car cause I'm diabetic but that's a separate issue. So I can't leave mine in a car. Also I have a Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitor (cgm) on my arm (Finger prick testing machines are confiscated around here). If the sensor is out of contact with my phone for money than an hour it is considered invalid and I would need a new one. I have attempted to solve this by diming my screen, lowering the volume, AND placing it on airplane mode. Unfortunately the app overrides the volume when the alarm goes off. It forces the volume to max AND should you have headphones connected it plays the sound through the headphones AND the speakers. This is a well known safety feature. I have tried to explain the under the ADA this counts as medical use and is therefore exempt. Unfortunately businesses always respond with variations of "Our policy overrules any bull$#!+ you can make up!!!" yes that's right the Americans with Disabilities Act is called made up bull$#!+. Cops and every lawyer I have talked to says zero tolerance means ZERO TOLERANCE. I know for a fact that this is illegal by federal law. I have tried to talk about an accomodation but no matter how calm I am or how much evidence I have the cops are called and my evidence is destroyed. I spend over a year getting the trespass lifted by going over the theater's head only for the incident to repeat the next time. Any ideas. P.S. While my state is a one party consent state. My city mandates ALL party consent and I need a court order to request I repeat REQUEST security footage. Edit: I knew I forgot something since the sensors can be Bluetoothed to my phone. My health insurance refuses to pay for the reciever. My doctor mentioned a CGM as an optional tool for understanding how my body responds to different foods while on Mounjaro. I don't have diabetes but the suggestion was framed as useful data rather than medically necessary. So it’s just an extra thing I could have. I'm curious whether the insulin response information is actually actionable for someone who isn't managing diabetes, or whether it generates anxiety about numbers without a clear framework for what to do with them. Hello, everyone! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for all the help, support and advice. As a solo animal rescuer, I cannot help Popo alone. I also do not have experience and knowledge in diabetes (both cats and humans). The plan today was to get Popo discharge so I could continue monitoring and stabilizing his glucose level at home (which is cheaper, no confinement/boarding fee from the vet). He had CBC test and glucose test prior to his discharge today. The vet also taught me how to use the glucose monitoring device. I even checked my blood sugar level. As expected, I am not diabetic. She also taught me how to give insulin shot and the do's and don'ts for Popo. After almost 4 hours, Popo finally got discharged. his glucose level was low. I signed the waiver and they put an IV fluid to prevent hypoglycemia. I planned to give him honey and feed him to boost his glucose when we get home. However, in the cab/taxi on our way home, he had seizure due to hypoglycemia. I was shocked. I was so scared, I didn't know what to do. It seemed that Popo was dying. He had difficulty breathing, his legs and tail was hard, he was cold. I thought he was about to die. I asked the driver to rush us back to the vet. When we arrived at the vet, his glucose level was 20 mg/dl. They gave him a couple of shots (one was glucose shot). The vet said Popo needs to stay there again for the next few days since his glucose level is too unstable. I waited again for almost an hour, I didn't want to leave Popo there without knowing that he is ok. His glucose level became 43 mg/dl, still low but no more seizure or tremors. He can already stand up and sit. I know he'll be ok and the vet will take care of him. Then, I went back home. Please see below the expenses of Popo as of today, September 17th. September 4th vet bill - $210 September 10th vet bill - $261 September 17th vet bill - $224 September 17th IV fluid before going home - $21 glucose monitoring device with free test strips - $33 As of today, total spent for Popo's medical treatment is $749 but does not include food, test strips and ultra fine syringe that was purchased in the past. I still have some money left. I wanted to buy some food supply for my other rescued cats at home and for the stray cats ( At the moment, I have over 20 rescued cats and over 40 stray cats that I feed everyday) but I'll keep/save the money for Popo's next vet bill since he is confined/admitted again. I (26M) own my own home. Its 5 bedrooms and way more space than I need. I came into the house due to a death in the family and i've had it for about 2 years. I use 3 bedrooms, my room, my office, my video game room. The other 2 rooms I rent out. One roommate, I don't know very well and keeps to himself. The other roommate is a friend from college. The friend from college is a diabetic. He has a CGM and thats how he manages it. I honestly don't know much more about his condition and don't pry as its not my business. He recently informed me that he is getting a service dog that alerts for his diabetes. He's supposed to get the dog next week. I do not want to live with a dog, I don't like them. I told him he can break his lease for a new place but he can't have the dog in my house. Until this, it has been overall smooth sailing as roommates. He's angry with me and supposedly looking into ways to make me accept the dog. He had a good situation at my house. He's told me I'm an asshole for basically kicking him out because he is disabled. First off Stelo is a over the counter version of the Dexcom 7. The Dexcom 7 can be adjusted to better match your blood sugar and is a medical device so it can be used to trigger insulin dispersal. The Stelo is not adjustable and is not accurate enough to rely on for such purposes. The Good. These are overwhelmingly the most beneficial for identifying problematic foods that could be spiking your blood sugar. Low carb products, diabetes products, sugar free products, etc. It also puts your mind at ease on things you thought might be spiking your blood sugar that aren't. My buddy has the dawn phenomenon and his blood sugar spikes a lot in the morning. He can use this to track his spikes and try different things to mitigate them. They are pretty much painless to attach and come with an applicator which makes it super easy. They are only FDA approved for sticking to the back of the arm and they come with an adhesive sticker attached to the device and over patch to better hold the device on. Under ideal situations they last for 15 days with another 12 hour grace period to switch out the device for another. They sell patches on Amazon that can go over the device and better secure it to your arm. If the device fails prematurely or doesn't attach correctly, contact the company for a replacement. The Bad They aren't super accurate and usually have a delay of about 20 minutes compared to a finger test but are way off when it comes to lab testing, especially if you are not on insulin. There are studies that outline that for people not on insulin, the GMI (which is the CGM's equivalent of A1c) is pretty far off. There is a GMI to A1c calculator and it was .4 points higher than the labs I got while wearing it. Granted I didn't wear one for a full 90 days but my blood sugar average on the app was always higher than it should have been. The average blood glucose doesn't match the A1c average for it, which is why they came up with the GMI number. Using the average blood glucose reading on the app and using the A1c average for that same number, my A1C would have been closer to .8 higher than it was in my labs. So the GMI number is better but still off. Basically, don't use average blood glucose to estimate your A1c or it will be way off. You need a different app to access the GMI number (clarity app) as well as save data from one CGM to the next. The Stelo app itself doesn't save your data once you switch devices. If you lay on the device, the pressure can cause your blood glucose to drop rapidly and then when you reduce pressure, it will go back up. This is normal so I try to place the device in a location where I won't lay on it for best accuracy. If you are using the device in an unapproved location on your body, you may not get your device replaced if it fails early but some people have reported better accuracy and better chance of it lasting the full 15 days in different spots. You can knock your device loose. My first device I bumped it on the side of my car door and it stopped working, that's why those extra patches they sell on amazon are good as well as figuring out the best location to attach it. Supposedly the sensor that gets inserted into your arm isn't always attached to the needle and is a known issue with these devices. If you see that, the device is defective and the threaded sensor won't insert when you go to attach the device and you'll get an instant error and device failure. Best to not even try to attach it if you see the thread has separated. Supposedly there is a limit to how many replacements you can get through device failures but it didn't happen to me, it was just something I read on another post online. Things to be aware of. The CGM takes a while to get warmed up, usually 25 minutes or so but it also takes longer sometimes several hours to be relatively accurate. I thought I got a defective one because it was displaying a ridiculously low blood sugar at first but it just took time to display correctly. Showering always causes a rapid spike in the readings followed by a rapid decrease. This is normal but freaked me out the first time I saw it. Save or take a picture of the container the device comes in. It is required for Bluetooth but also for requesting a new device if yours fails. You will get a warning message through the app if you have what they consider a spike. It's set up by the app on default. If you do not get that message they do not consider it enough of a spike to matter apparently. I regularly would see my blood sugar steadily rise 30 points before starting to decrease back to baseline and these are not considered spikes. When I ate some potato chips, I saw a rapid spike of 90 points and that registered as a spike on the app. I figure (for me) that 30 point spikes are effectively not worth worrying about. I'm sure everyone is different in this regard but that's just my experience. Exercise, working, activity, sweating, being hot, all tend to raise blood sugar. The first time I saw a big raise I was fasting and thought I was sensitive to caffeine in black coffee because it was the only thing I had that morning. Nope, turns out I'm not sensitive to caffeine, I was just working hard and my blood sugar spiked. If you eat something and immediately do some work, even light activity, if you see a spike it might be your activity not your food. Test foods when you are lounging around for the best accuracy. Overall These are not accurate enough to track your blood sugar numbers but they work really well for identifying spikes and trends in your blood sugar... for recognizing patterns or for testing foods. Essentially, don't use them to estimate your A1c or average blood sugar. If you are trying to introduce back in some carbs or figure out how many berries with whip cream will spike your blood sugar, they are excellent for that purpose. If you want to know if the keto bread you purchased is really detrimental to your weight loss, then get one of these. The finger tests can work but they are so much more of a hassle to test every time you eat something. These are expensive... about 50 dollars for 15 days but now that I've essentially eliminated all the harmful foods from my diet, I can stick with foods that I know are good. Average monthly cost for insulin in the US is around $400. If your child has Type 1 diabetes they must have insulin injections for life or they die. This cost is just for the "basic" treatment where you get anywhere from 4-8 needle injections per day. If you want a better quality of life and better outcomes well then you want the "premium" package. You can get one for around $50 and it will track your glucose in real time (reading every second or so) for two weeks. It is an eye opening experience seeing how your choice of foods, stress, exercise and sleep affect your glucose levels (the accompanying app keeps tabs on all your readings). This is just my thoughts based on personal experience. I'm 40 yrs old, fit, and in excellent metabolic health (from blood test). After reading outlive I decided to purchase a CGM so I could better optimize my diet. I found the CGM had some wild results. Pasta had the same spike as fruit. Potatoes had the same spike as ice-cream. So I did some research and found results can vary upto 30% from a prick test. This may be accurate enough for assessing major issues with your diet. But not accurate enough for optimizing an already healthy diet. Another problem is that in a healthy person the body activates insulin to smooth out the spikes. So pasta reads the same glucose level as fruit, but there is no indication of the associated insulin level. For healthy people it's not the sugar level that's hazardous, its the associated insulin level. Which can not be measured. I'm in no position to comment on the CGM use case for diabetics.
