YSK that Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Reebok, Champion, and 50+ other brands you trust are all owned by a single $20 billion company that doesn't design or manufacture anything. They just rent the logo out to the cheapest bidder. If the quality feels worse, that's why.
Why YSK: If you bought something from any of these brands lately and thought "this feels cheaper than it used to," you're not imagining it. The brand you trusted doesn't make anything anymore. It's a logo stapled to a royalty agreement. The company is called Authentic Brands Group. Their playbook is to wait for a beloved brand to hit financial trouble. Buy the intellectual property. The name, the logo, the trademarks. Strip out the designers, the factory workers, the quality control. Then license the brand name to third-party companies who actually make and sell everything. ABG just collects royalty checks. Their own IPO filing admitted it: "We generally do not design or manufacture the products associated with our brands and therefore have more limited control over such products' quality". They call themselves "brand guardians." What they guard is the trademark. Not the stitching, the materials, or the people who made the thing worth buying in the first place. Here's what happens after ABG "saves" a brand. Brooks Brothers was founded in 1818 and dressed 40 presidents. ABG bought it out of bankruptcy in 2020 and launched a cheap diffusion line at Macy's that reviewers called "a little bit shabby." Eddie Bauer was bought by ABG in 2021. Just filed its third bankruptcy in February 2026. All 174 stores closing. Forever 21 was bought out of bankruptcy in 2020 and went bankrupt again in 2025. Lost over $400 million in three years. ABG's own CEO called buying it "probably the biggest mistake I made". All 350 U.S. stores gone. ABG doesn't need the stores to survive. When an operating partner goes bankrupt, ABG still owns the brand. They just find another licensee. The workers lose their jobs. ABG loses nothing. And ABG isn't the only company doing this. Here's who owns what so you can make informed choices: Authentic Brands Group: Aéropostale, Arrow, Barneys New York, Billabong, Brooks Brothers, Champion, DC Shoes, Dockers, Eddie Bauer, Element, Forever 21, Frederick's of Hollywood, Frye, Greg Norman, Guess (pending), Hunter Boots, Izod, Jones New York, Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand, Nautica, Nine West, Prince, Quiksilver, Reebok, Rockport, Roxy, RVCA, Sperry, Spyder, Tapout, Ted Baker, Van Heusen, Vince, Volcom WHP Global: Toys "R" Us, Babies "R" Us, Rag & Bone, Vera Wang, G-Star, Express, Bonobos, Joe's Jeans, Anne Klein, Joseph Abboud, Isaac Mizrahi, Warners, Lotto, Lands' End Marquee Brands: Martha Stewart, Laura Ashley, Sur La Table, Emeril Lagasse, America's Test Kitchen, BCBGMAXAZRIA, BCBG, Ben Sherman, Bruno Magli, Anti Social Social Club, Totes, Isotoner, Destination Maternity, Motherhood, A Pea in the Pod, Stance, Dakine, Body Glove Same playbook everywhere. Buy the name. Gut the product. Collect the rent. Edit: This blew up way more than expected. A few of you have DMed asking where I get this information. An entire year of no-buy seems daunting. Anyone else doing a no-buy month, or half a year?
I'm seeing posts where people are saying they're not buying any clothes, or getting any take-out for an entire year. TBH that seems very unrealistic. I'm interested in doing a no-buy, but I want it to be something that can actually be achieved. I'm thinking of trying it for 3 months rather than a year. I had basically no money for almost a year and the first thing I did with the money I got today was buy myself some McDonalds
I got payed today. For the first time in a while, my bank account is not in the red. I actually have more than two hundred bucks. I know it might sound dumb, but it is so freeing to be able to afford warm, greasy, somewhat filling food. I almost teared up when I tasted that melted cheese on the burger. I don't plan on spending a lot of money on fast food, I don't actually like most fast food places that much, plus I still need to watch my expenses, this was just me finally being able to buy a little treat. I hope everyone here can have a moment like this sooner or later. submitted by /u/Karl_Marxist_3rd to r/povertyfinance [link] [comments]

Completed a no buy year that ended on 28th September.
I started a no buy year last year and completed it this month. My rules were if it was necessary then I'd refill it and basic things like grocery, food, medicine, paying utility bills were allowed. Also, I made a key exemption it was about buying hardcopy books. I love books and knowledge so I have always been interested in buying and reading books. I learnt from this year that I can live a good life without buying anything new that is unnecessary. I bought 73 things out of which 58 were books. I saw that the impulse to purchase came early on and during a short period in the middle. It was not same throughout the year. Hope to continue this experiment. During this time I managed to stay off social media and permanently closed Amazon account. submitted by /u/Minimum-Molasses5754 to r/nobuy [link] [comments]

I am buying a car at MSRP (no market adjustment at all). I have the ability to pay 80% of the purchase price in cash. Will finance the rest at 0% for 3 years. Should I put down the 80%?
I have seen a lot of conflicting advice. It seems like most of the newer advice tends to recommend putting as little down as possible since interest rates are low. They recommend investing that money instead. My question is, if I only put down 10% and then invest the rest of that large down payment, I'm now stuck with a much larger car payment every month and thus can't save near as much money each month. My wife will be needing a new vehicle within a few years as well, plus I don't want our monthly retirement savings to take a hit. What is the best play in this situation? Edit: Ok. I get it. My thinking is flawed. Lol. It is going to be tough to overcome the mindset of "always pay cash if possible" that I was raised with, but you all have made great points and it makes sense to put as little down as possible in current market conditions. I haven't decided if I will put the money in a a HYSA, bonds, or a brokerage yet, but I have decided that I will be financing as much as I can at 0%. Comments are coming in faster than I can read them at this point, but I assure you, I will read them all. Thank you for your help! submitted by /u/hibbert0604 to r/personalfinance [link] [comments]

This is Biscuit. We moved our couch today...something rattled INSIDE the couch, so we flipped it over...and now I know why I’ve had to buy so many mice in the past 3 years. She has no remorse and is now snuggling with all 26 of them!

My 16 year old son was in the kitchen baking up a storm when my wife came downstairs. "What are you doing?" she asked him. "I'm going to have a bake sale to buy a car," he answered. "Where on earth did you get that idea? We're in a pandemic! No one is going to buy baked goods!" He said...

I'd just like to encourage everyone never to buy a TomTom GPS. They've classified my 2-year-old unit as "obsolete" and will no longer provide "lifetime updates" on it. Their solution? Buy a new GPS from them with "lifetime updates!" I've called and emailed customer service six times, to no avail.
