AITA for telling my sister not to buy things for my daughter if there are strings attached?
I (35F) got into an argument with my sister (33F) over a donated pool toy that she had bought for my daughter years ago when she was little. She texted me asking if I still had it, and I told her I had donated it because my daughter outgrew it a long time ago. She then told me that she thought she had previously asked me to save anything she bought for my daughter instead of donating it, and that moving forward she wanted me to ask her before getting rid of anything she purchased. The issue is that I genuinely only remembered her specifically saying that once about a particular item, not every single thing she’s ever bought my child. The conversation escalated because she started bringing up how much she’s bought for my daughter over the years and how frustrating it is when things she bought get donated or given away. To me, that immediately felt like gifts and help were being turned into emotional leverage. For context, I grew up hearing a lot of “after all we’ve done for you” and “after all the money we’ve spent on you” from my parents, so this hit a huge nerve for me. I am very sensitive to the idea of gifts or support becoming something that can later be held over someone’s head. I told her that if gifts come with conditions, expectations, or future obligations attached, then I’d rather she not buy things for my daughter at all. I also told her my child is not going to grow up feeling indebted to people because they chose to buy her things. She thinks I completely blew this out of proportion and became defensive over a simple request. From her perspective, she was just asking for sentimental or reusable items to be set aside instead of donated. From my perspective, if you give a child something, especially clothes, toys, or baby items, the parent manages those items. Kids outgrow things constantly. I can’t read minds or know which items someone secretly expects returned years later unless they directly tell me. Now I feel awful because the conversation got heated, but I still stand by the principle behind what I said. AITA? submitted by /u/Pluriphery to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

What are the “loss leaders” at IKEA? Things worth buying that are priced so well that it’s there to get you inside the shop?
I got stainless steel utensils there for so cheap and replaced all our plastic black utensils like flippers and big spoons and so on. Is there anything else that is so well priced and good quality to buy while we visit this coming week? We have a baby due later this year too. I’d love to furnish most of our home (we just moved to the city) where possible. I know some products are now expensive compared to what they were but I figure there must be still some good bargain finds! submitted by /u/88r0b1nh00d88 to r/Frugal [link] [comments]

A note on bringing unhoused people into restaurants and cafés to buy them things
Dear friendly Seattle neighbors, I know you're being empathetic and having good intentions when you bring someone in off of the street to guy them a coffee or a sandwich, but for the employees and business owners, you're creating a problem. Those of us working in these establishments every day get to know our unhoused neighbors and see them a lot more than you do. The individual you're wanting to help might be in a good disposition and behaving coherently and safely when they ask for a coffee, but those same people can have unpredictable and volatile episodes. I used to let people come charge their phones and get water at my busines, but the same people who have come in calmly for some help have also been dangerous and harassed my employees and customers. They have come in and yelled racial epithets, sexually harassed women, and destroyed some of the goods I'm selling. Please don't be mad at us when we ask you to let them wait outside while you buy them a treat. The safety of my employees and customers is my number one priority, and when you bring in people who either have mental health issues or drug addiction, you're putting them in danger. I've talked to other businesses in the area who have the same problem. The best thing you can do is ask them to wait outside while you buy them something. Thank you for your time. submitted by /u/ILIKETHECOLORRED to r/Seattle [link] [comments]

Removing side loading from future android devices is just pure madness from google, it was only thing which kept me from buying Iphone, well time to move on I guess.
So yes Android has decided to lock their system from its customer even more then before, I remember few year ago when they removed the feature in which we could acess the core files like 'data folder' in android, and now they decided to remove the side loading feature ( side loading means installing software from source which are other than play store), so what diffrence does it make now, why don't I buy I phone instead. Corporate greed? Nah, they want more control over us, Mark my word, we are living in an era in which they just don't wanna make money, they want to control, they want power, a future in which big corporations will control us rather than the government. submitted by /u/Healerisdead to r/Piracy [link] [comments]

Things I tell everyone after they buy a lamp, that designers charge $200/h to explain
So you just bought a beautiful lamp... congrats! But here's the thing nobody tells you at IKEA or Wayfair... Yesterday, this woman bouught one of our floor lamps. Gorgeous piece. But as she's walking out, I stop her: 'Hold up, let me save you some frustration'. See, I learnd these tricks from a lighting designer who came into our shop. She told me most people ruin their lamp investment with three mistakes: They put it in the wrong corner, your lamp should create a triangle with your seating. Not shoved againsst a wall where it lights up nothing useful. The designer called it the 'conversation triangle', lamp, chair, side table. They use the wrong bulb, that beautiful lamp you just bought? It'll look like garbage with a cool white bulb. 2700K warm light makes everything look expensive. 4000K makes it look like a gas station. They don't layer it, your new lamp isn't supposed to light the whole room. It's supposed to work WITH other light sources. Think of it like seasoning, one type isn't enough. This advice charges rich people $200/h. I just tell customers for free because I don't like seeing them disappointed with their purchases, I want them to actually love what they bought. submitted by /u/Aggressive-Cookie356 to r/HomeDecorating [link] [comments]

My wife breaks things constantly and nonchalantly just says, “we need to buy a new one”.
Example: our electric pencil sharpener was full. Instead of just removing the shavings bin and dumping it out. She brought the entire sharpener to the trash and banged it on the can at least 10 times to “get the shavings out of the motor”. Now it doesn’t work at all. This is fairly common. She will also be the first to say things break too easily and we spend too much on repeat purchases… submitted by /u/marshellz to r/mildlyinfuriating [link] [comments]

Useful/cool things to buy
I’m going to be receiving a lot more money then i expected to receive and want some ideas for useful/cool things i could spend some of it on. Price range for items is $700 or less. My overall background is a 24 year old university student studying geology, i am moved out and do a lot of cooking. I have frequent overnight camping trips either for geology related trips or just for fun. I like stimulating desk gadgets/doodads, amateur leather crafting, reading, rock hounding, outdoor gear(gorpcore). My current computer setup is a Radeon 580rx amd with a I-7 quad core (incase you know of any gpu deals rn). I currently need more T-shirts, pants, hiking boots/shoes, and undershirts so some really good brand recommendations would be greatly appreciated. AITA putting my wife on a strict allowance and making her ask me permission to buy expensive things?
When we married, we decided not to fully combine our finances. We have a shared account in which i fund 3/4 and she fund 1/4. We use this account to pay the mortgage, utilities, grocery, etc. We also have our separate accounts where we deposit the rest of our money. We’re responsible for our own investments and cars. Things worked well for a couple of years until recently when she came to me crying. It turns out my wife is not good with her money and owes $150,000 spread over several credit cards and her car loan. Unless she wins the lottery, there’s no way she would be able to pay off her debt and I didn’t want her to mess up her credit by declaring bankruptcy. I decided to loan her the money to pay off the debt on strict conditions. I will take over her finances including receiving her income. She will be placed on a strict allowance and budget. She will have to ask permission to buy anything over $50 and have to go by my judgment. Once she pays me back the money, she can take control of her own finances. She argued against the conditions until I pointed out I don’t have $150,000 in cash stuff in the couch. I will have to sell some assets including stocks that are currently performing well. If I loan her the money, it will cost me money. She finally agreed. This weekend we were at a dinner party where after too many drinks, some of the women decided they wanted to take a girls trip a few weekends from now. My wife turned to ask me if she could go and I answered no, it’s not in her budget. I’ll spare you the details of the argument that erupted but the TLDR version is that I’m a misogynist pig who keeps her on a leash. Some argued I should have bailed her out without conditions because there should be none in a marriage. The hurtful part is that she didn’t once defend me. So, was I wrong to put those conditions on her? Hello all I read some of your comments at lunch and continue to read them. When I got home from work, she started another round of arguments about the trip. I pointed out she has no money at which point she pointed out that she hasn’t hit the limit on one of her credit card and that card should cover her for a weekend. So I drove back to my office and will spend the night here. To answer some of your questions. Our shared account pays for everything in the house. For example, a few weeks ago we bought a new cookware set from Costco and that money came from the shared account. She works a full time job. Minus her contribution to the shared account, the rest of her income is hers to spend as she wishes. I cover things we do together like dinners, dates, and vacations. The principal amount she owes is about $120,000 of which about half is her car loan. The rest consist of interests and late fees. I didn’t bring up her debt in front of our friends because I wanted to protect her reputation. I haven’t liquidated anything. I’m working with my advisor and broker to decide what to liquidate to take the least financial and tax hit. She doesn’t gamble. I looked over her bills and it looked like she spent her money on dinners/drinks and shopping with her friends. We’ve been married for less than 5 years and do not have children We talked about starting a family in a couple of years. submitted by /u/Zookeeper73572 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITAH for ending things after he refused to buy me tampons?
I (27) F had Friday night date plans with my (28) M boyfriend. There were a few things I needed to do before driving the 35 minutes to his place to have our (dinner and movie). I had just got off of work and needed to shower, care for my pet, pack for the night and clean a bit before heading out. Right before my shift ended I got my period (yay) and with that came super bad cramps, back pain, headache and all the fun period feelings that I didn't expect and so I planned to head a nearby store the closer I got to his place to grab tampons and some period pads. Right before I showered I get an ETA call from him. I tell him the time he should expect me and gave him a heads up that I'm not feeling too well. He offers sympathy, and then asks if there's anything he can do to help me. I hesitate before I answer, because in the past he's asked and l've said and nothing came of it. I decided to just give it a shot and ask if he could run to the store since it's about a two minute drive from his place to grab the items for me. I said I can send you the exact products I need which is about just three and also Venmo him. He chuckles and said "yeah no we can just go together to grab those things." Im shocked and state "that would just be a waste. I'll just run there myself." Some time later I finish my tasks, run to the store, grab my period products and head to his place. It's once we're sitting down later, that I asked him. Why didn't he wanna grab the items for me after he asked if he could help me. He answers, "I'm not going to embarrass myself. We could have grabbed it together. Besides, I didn't wanna get up I was in the middle of a game." After hearing this I ended things and left. Edit: It was amazing to read through all of your stories, advice and comments. There are a lot of amazing husbands, dads, brothers, wives , sisters and friends out there in the comments that have truly made me look at all of this in a different light, a really good light. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. *To those in the comments who are just being straight up rude, I will not go back and forth with you. There is a difference between disagreeing and straight up just disrespecting. This post should not rile anyone up to the point where you’re throwing cuss words, and misogyny around. I’ll leave you with this: we all want and crave different things and that is okay. Don’t let this post agitate you because you disagree. submitted by /u/Acrobatic_Cup3962 to r/AITAH [link] [comments]
