Then went to Balzac Paris, which has the same price point and everything felt lux. Ended up buying some cute pieces. Genuinely obsessed with Sezane but I can’t wear head to toe Sezane forever (or can I). I’ve been trying to find other independent brands with a similar feel and that sweet spot of quality, interesting design, not fast fashion pricing but not designer either. Clothing and accessories both. The problem is I never know where to actually look. I was just returning my latest fail from Sezane, and got notice I will be charged €7 on my return as I have returned more than 70% of orders over the past 12 months. With sezane sizing and quality becoming more and more unreliable, I will probably not be ordering again. I have spent tens of thousands at Sezane. On cardigans, coats, dresses and shirts that all shrink. It’s become a massive waste of money and pointless. Washing my Max shirt and the sleeves shrinking was the last straw for me. Items that I’ve purchased and they’ve shrank despite following the instructions: - Betty - Vic Dress - Gaspard Cardigan - Ophelia Dress - Max Shirt Clothing manufacturers have to do a wash test as part of production processes. To skip this they label things as ‘handwashing only’ I don’t trust Sezane anymore. Its been a year of wearing my Sezane items (over a year really) and I want to give a synopsis of my top pieces that I absolutely love and could see myself repurchasing over and over again! In no particular order, The Damon trouser: LOVE LOVE these trousers! I would and have repurchased these pants because I lost weight. I have other trousers I’ve purchased recently that I love but I honestly wished I would have just purchased the Damon in more colors because I love the silhouette so much! Barry cardigan: While it is one of the itchier knits that Sezane makes, I love my two Barry cardigans. I wear them so much even when it’s warmer, they are an easy “throw over your shoulders” piece. Sandy skirt: lightweight and breathable viscose material. I love the silhouette of this skirt and I get so many compliments on this particular poppy pattern. I haven’t found another one in a color I want but if they ever bring back olive green it will be an immediate buy! Last but definitely not least the Carter Coat: This was a surprise to me because i originally wanted the Bobby. This was one of my more recent purchases but i have worn its almost every single day since I got it! Am I the only one this is baffled by all the 500 word think pieces about how awful, unstylish, and expensive Sezane is? It’s so constant and never ending and never any different. Let me just sum it up: -Quality is going down (hasn’t been my experience, but I get it) -They are using less natural fibers. -Considering they are using less natural fibers, things are way too expensive. -Customer service didn’t treat you like a princess (also never been my experience) -REAL French girls don’t wear Sezane (they do) Did I miss anything? Hey! Like some of you, I was a huge fan of original Sezane. While I still like the brand, its recent growth has led to some of the price / quality balance getting out of wack. Hence I’ve been dipping my toe into other similar brands, and thought I would give you my reviews of them in case some of you are also searching for similar stuff. Price-wise, all of these are in the same range as Sezane. Petit Mendigote Probably the most similar to Sezane across the board. Has a range of items, the knitwear and jackets are especially nice. Uses both natural and manmade materials, so read the composition if that’s important. I have a jumper (mohair mix) and a pair of leather sandals from them - very happy with the quality. Some of my current faves include: the Java skirt the Mella cardigan the Osana shearling jacket Rosae Paris A little more minimalist/timeless, less trendy than Sezane. Great materials: lots of wool, leather, silk, and often recycled materials. I have a silk skirt and a wool jacket, both feel more luxe than I was expecting. I also have a pair of wool trousers, but they are a little short on me (I’m 5’7, but proportionally have a shorter torso / longer legs), so might be worth checking garment measurements if you’re on the taller side. Current faves: Le Chopin merino/cashmere jumper Le Nicomede jacket in Chocolate wool Le Doyle suede jacket Tara Jarmon A preppy, colourful take on French style. Note that they do use a lot of polyester, in case that’s not something you like. Still worth scrolling through for the occasional merino/cotton item, but those can be a little harder to find. I have a sweater and a pair of full leather knee-high boots - these were on sale, and are amazing considering I only paid around €150 for them. So keep an eye out for the sales! (I do find their website a little annoying & hard to navigate, though) Current faves: The Ginno cardigan in burgundy The Guetty cardigan the Bis bag Shoe brands: Bobbies Made in Portugal, high quality leather shoes. I have a pair of ankle boots which were comfortable right out the box. Solid leather construction, rubber outsoles. The designs are a combination of more trendy pieces and some classic cuts like chelsea boots. Prices in the €200-300 range. Style-wise, remind me a lot of Alohas, but my Bobbies boots are a lot more comfortable than the one pair of Alohas shoes I have (which kind of put me off that brand just due to how painful they are!). Current faves: Bettany mary janes in ruby Clarisse boots in lacquered ganache Becca babies in Verdana Kiruna snow boots Pied de Biche My most recent discovery! I was looking for an alternative to the Sezane Axelle boots and discovered this brand. And honestly, these feel very premium, more so than my Sezane footwear. My Albane boots have impeccable workmanship, on par with Jimmy Choo & similar level shoes I have, but at half or even one-third of the price (€200-400 range). I love that they have leather outsoles, but were shipped with self-attaching rubber sole protectors, too. Highly recommend. Current faves: Lou loafers Albane ankle boots (I have these, super comfortable!) Sèzane Review i. packaging. My order was placed on October 15th, 2024, and I received my package on October 21st, 2024. Shipping was free and expedited from France. My package arrived in a brown box—simple, no fuss. Inside, I received my items: a pre-paid return label in an envelope, a gift box (as requested), a dust bag, a Fall magazine, and a free tote bag. I will discuss the free items in a later section. I enjoyed the decorative yellow stripes inside the box and the sweet note on the lid. ii. free items. A simple striped gift bag with a red ribbon was included. I am not sure what I will use this for yet. The magazine was a nice touch. Good marketing tactic. Free tote bags are sent with most orders. Is a free tote bag a reason to place an order? No. Mine is butter yellow with white stripes, decorated with a linen emblem saying, “October.” I always do enjoy it when I am sent a shopping tote. This one is nice, and I could see myself using it. I wish it said Sezane rather than October. This is another marketing tactic since consumers will want to gather totes for each month… iii. Betty Cardigan in Black & Ecru Crochet -USD 170. A. Quality. I found no issues with the quality; rather, I was impressed by the craftsmanship. The body was soft, uniform, and thick. Crochet pieces are all completed with no loose strings. The composition of this piece is 100% Merino Wool, which will hold up well. I am not impressed with the quality of the buttons. The buttons are basic compared to the rest of the garment, something easily found in a craft store. They will hold up well, sure, but they are unimpressive for the price point. B. Style. I adore the style of this cardigan. I will need a larger size (I will go over sizing in another section). It is Timeless, beautiful, and easy to wear. Once I get my correct size, I foresee myself wearing this often. C. Sizing. I am considering returning for the next size up. In most brands, I am an XS or S in tops. For example, free people (xs), lululemon (4, 6, or XS), and Artizia (4 or S). My bust is a 34C, and my waist is a true 26. Based on the size chart, I ordered size S. Typically, I like my knitwear oversized. I should have considered this and ordered a M. The bust was too tight (gaping), and the arms were too short. I am only 5’6”, this should not be an issue. D. Is it worth it? Maybe. If you have the money to spend and you enjoy high-quality knitwear, YES. Would I save money to enjoy this cardigan? YES. Is this worth putting on a credit card if I cannot afford it? NO. iv. Martin Trousers in Ecru Khaki -USD 160. A. Quality. The fabric of this piece is beautiful- thick, textured, and well-made. I am not sure where they source their fabrics, but if treated correctly, these pants could last very long. The stitching was seamless, with no loose threading. Pockets came seamed, which is expected. Two-button closure, high-quality buttons, and a gold zipper. The waistband is lined with ribbon to reinforce the fabric; the pockets are polyester and cotton…. WHY! The main composition for the rest of the pant is 88% cotton and 11% linen. B. Style. A classic pant. I did order the full-length pants to be hemmed. Very Parisian and classic. Easy to style. T I am adding a photo of a black cotton blouse next to the trousers for reference. They are a dark green, almost black color. C. Sizing. This is the downfall. I am a true to size 26 waist, and I have been sizing down recently (Rulers and measuring tapes did not change, so why did pants?). In trousers, I typically order a 26 or a size 6. I ordered a size 4, according to the size guide. The size guide was not clear, and it placed a range of numbers rather than a true size. Martin trousers, size 4, is a 25 waist. This did not fit me. I was disappointed since I was most looking forward to these trousers. I am debating ordering either a 6 or an 8. What do you all think? (Please remember I am a human, and I do not want any comments on my body’s shape or weight. Thank you). D. Is it worth it? Yes. The quality is there. Sizing is tricky for all pants. Other than that, I will be happy to alter the length of my pants for a perfect fit once I complete my exchange. v. Elodie Mary Janes - 235 USD. A. Discourse. In my original post, many of the comments were about these shoes. People have said they love the style but heard bad things about the quality. Leather snapping, blisters, and poor craftsmanship were all brought up. As the original poster, this freaked me out! I did see those reviews online, but reading multiple people agree made me not want to keep the shoes. B. Quality. Shoes are hard to judge on a first impression. They are very personal. They seem well crafted, but I noticed small ridges in the leather. No bleeding, glue, or plastic. Leather is sourced from Portugal. The lining of the shoe is also leather. The outsole is rubber, with no traction. Brass buckles came polished and clean. C. Comfort. I suffer from plantar fasciitis (at the ripe age of 24). Comfort is a must! When I put them on, they were not comfortable. I love the style, but I could see my heels hurting. They are tight, like most leather shoes, at first. D. Is it worth it? No. I own many Mary Janes. My favorites are from Vagabond Shoemakers; they are comfortable, similar in quality, and more affordable. These are overpriced. I did appreciate that they came with a linen dustbag. vi. Conclusions. I will be returning or exchanging all the pieces. In total, I spent $565. I think I will order again now that I understand their sizing. My recommendation is to order multiple sizes if you are a first-time buyer. I love the styles and aesthetics. The quality is very good. I will be returning the Elodie Mary Janes for another sweater and a pair of pants. If I want another pair of shoes, I will consider the loafers. They are also priced very high. As a first-time buyer, I was impressed by the pieces, and I do think they are priced fairly. Discussions on fast fashion, textiles, and production are fairly common knowledge now. The industry does not typically produce high-quality fabrics; however, Sezane does. I do not think you should run out and max out your credit card. That is not smart shopping. However, looking through some of these post, it seems like the quality has gone down. I know it’s silly to get emotional about a brand, but frankly - I am a tad emotional. I have been a Sézane addict for five years. 80% of the clothes in my closet are Sézane. I got married in Sézane. Engaged in Sézane. I check the website religiously. Today, I’m breaking up with the brand. I wanted to post this somewhere to tell others how this brand has changed over the years - so you don’t get swept down the same rabbit hole as me toward the end. 1.) Sézane has become fast fashion - this company used to make clothes out of silk and other high quality material. They used to release slowly. Not it’s a churn of new products every single week. They’ve moved over to polyester as a core for many of their fabrics, while raising prices. 2.) Customer service has major issues - despite charging hundreds of dollars for basic items, Sézane customer service cannot be bothered to answer an email. Case and point - I ordered two sweaters from the second archives. I received one. I sent an email five days ago and despite following up multiple times have heard nothing. They essentially took my money and won’t pick up the phone. 3.) They use scarcity marketing that is downright psychologically abusive. I work in marketing, so I can say this with certainty: Sézane has come to rely on scarcity tactics to move product. The “in someone else’s cart” feature makes you purchase out of panic, rather than actual responsible thinking. The archives are a mess - badly executed and gimmicky. 4.) Quality has gone downhill - I have purchased $200 dresses I’m over the moon about - only to receive them with fabric flaws, loose strings, and missing buttons. It’s really not what you should expect from a brand at Sezane’s price point - and when you add that to the bad customer service, it just makes getting help for flawed items a nightmare. If you’ve had a different experience, I’m happy for you. Sézane has been a brand that has defined my fashion over the last five years - but it’s time for us to part ways. Someone needs to give their founder some advice on how to grow a business - or maybe they are happy being a churn and burn fast fashion company. If that’s the case, power to them.
