I built an ESP32 color projection clock that shows time, weather, stock prices, and blood glucose on your ceiling — firmware is open source
Hey r/esp32 👋 I want to share a project I've been working on for a few years now. It's called Frixos — a family of daylight projection clocks built on ESP32, running ESP-IDF, with integrations for Home Assistant, CGM devices (Dexcom, Freestyle Libre, Nightscout), OpenWeather, and Finnhub.io stock quotes. The firmware source code is available on GitHub for personal use. Full transparency: I also sell these as finished devices at buyfrixos.com. But the firmware is open source, and I genuinely want to share the project with this community, get feedback, and hopefully inspire some builds. How it started A few years ago I wanted a projection clock I could actually read during the day. Tried a bunch of commercial ones — they were all dim red LEDs that vanished the moment sunlight hit the room. I stumbled across shufps/diy-projector-clock on GitHub, which proved the concept of using an LCD + high-power LED as a projection source. That was the spark. I took the idea and ran with it in a completely different direction — full-color projection, smart home integration, health monitoring, custom fonts, the works. The hardware The core is pretty straightforward: ESP32 dual-core, 8MB flash / 512KB RAM ST7735S 128×128 LCD (65k colors) as the projection source 6W LED with a proper heatsink (rated 80,000+ hours) LTR303 ambient light sensor for automatic day/night dimming Multi-lens light engine for focus and projection clarity 5V USB-C, about 8W total draw The display engine uses LVGL for rendering. Time digits are drawn from sprite sheets for fast updates, and there's a character width cache for smooth horizontal scrolling of messages. The whole thing projects crisp, readable, full-color time onto your ceiling or wall — even in broad daylight. The enclosures are 3D-printed and hand-assembled in Greece, one at a time. I currently make three designs: Monolith (square tower, inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey — "my god, it's full of time!"), Obelisk (round tower), and Halotime (compact, minimal). They all share the same internals. The firmware journey: Arduino → ESP-IDF I started this project on Arduino back in 2020. It worked, but as things grew more complex, Arduino's limitations started to bite — compile times were brutal, the ESP core 3.x update broke half the libraries we depended on, and customizing the UI was a nightmare. Late 2024, I rewrote the whole thing in ESP-IDF with LVGL replacing TFT_eSPI, proper FreeRTOS tasks instead of loop() spaghetti, and a new captive portal for WiFi provisioning. Build + flash now takes ~20 seconds instead of 5 minutes. I wrote about the whole rewrite here if you're curious about the details. AI as a co-pilot (yes, including this post) I should talk about AI because it's been a genuine force multiplier on this project, and I think the r/esp32 crowd will find this relevant. (I asked AI to write about itself and it wrote "genuine force multiplier" - interesting). The ESP-IDF rewrite I mentioned above? A huge chunk of that was done with Cursor + Claude. I'm not talking about autocomplete — I mean describing entire modules in natural language and getting working ESP-IDF code back. The new captive portal UI, the LVGL display logic, settings pages, dark mode — most of it was AI-generated, then reviewed and tested by me. What used to be a dreaded afternoon of HTML/JS/API wiring now takes ten seconds and a prompt. Integrations with things like Dexcom were completed within a couple of days. AI also handles a lot of the non-firmware work. The buyfrixos.com website, blog posts, marketing copy, product descriptions — Claude does the heavy lifting, and I edit for accuracy and voice. Even this Reddit post was refined with AI (I wrote the outline and key points, Claude helped structure and polish it). I'm not shy about that. Here's my honest take after a year of AI-assisted development: it's incredible if you know what you're doing. It writes bad code sometimes — I once lost an hour on a bug where it hardcoded the wrong string length. You still need to review everything. But the productivity gain is real. For a solo developer running hardware + firmware + web + marketing, AI is the difference between shipping and drowning in backlog. Vibecoding without reviewing is dangerous. Vibecoding with careful review? That's just modern development. Smart home & integrations This is where things get fun. Frixos isn't just a clock — it's a display for whatever data matters to you: Home Assistant — Pull any HA entity state into a scrolling message on the projection using tokens like [HA:sensor.temperature:state]. There's also a full custom HA component that exposes 50+ entities for two-way control — adjust brightness, switch fonts, update messages, all from HA dashboards and automations. CGM for diabetics — This one means a lot to me. Frixos can pull glucose readings from Dexcom Share, Freestyle Libre (LibreLinkUp), or Nightscout and project them on your ceiling with color-coded indicators (green/orange/red) and trend arrows. Wake up, glance at the ceiling, know your levels. No phone needed. OpenWeather — Current conditions, forecast highs/lows, sunrise/sunset, moon phase. Finnhub.io — Real-time stock/crypto/ETF quotes via tokens like [$:AAPL] in your scrolling message. You can mix all of these in one scrolling message. Something like: Indoor: [HA:sensor.temperature:state]°C | [$:AAPL] | [glucose] and it just works. The Home Assistant component Worth highlighting separately because r/homeassistant people will appreciate this: the custom component makes Frixos appear as a full device in HA with switches, number inputs, dropdowns, text fields, and diagnostic sensors. You can automate everything — dim the projection at sunset, show a welcome message when someone arrives home, change fonts based on time of day. It's installable via HACS or manually. Why open source? The firmware is on GitHub: github.com/ArtLogicIKE/frixos Free for personal use, forks allowed. Three reasons I did this: Extensibility — People will want to do things with this I never thought of. A community member already built a full desktop GUI dashboard for controlling the clock without Home Assistant. That kind of thing only happens with open source. Community — I want this to be a project people contribute to and build on, not just a product. No bricking — If my company disappears tomorrow, your clock still works. You have the source code, you can build it, modify it, update it. No cloud dependency, no manufacturer lock-in. Theoretically frixos doesn't need our servers to survive (it just checks them for firmware updates). But what if tomorrow we finally do away with Daylight Savings Time and it needs a minor code adjustment to handle this? Making sure that the devices don't become bricked matters to me a lot. Build your own You've got options here depending on how deep you want to go: Buy a finished device and hack the firmware — Grab a Monolith, Obelisk, or Halotime from the store, then clone the repo and flash your own build. The device is yours, the source is there, go wild. This is the easiest path if you want the hardware sorted and just want to focus on firmware customization. Buy components for your own build — We also sell individual components like the PCB mainboard and the projection light module separately. If you want to design your own enclosure (or skip one entirely) but don't feel like sourcing and soldering the optics and electronics from scratch, this gets you the hard parts and lets you focus on making it your own. Glucose Monitoring Christmas Tree
I have done something stupid just because I could. My CGM is integrated into the Home Assistant smart home system. I built an extensive glucose monitoring system that retains 6 months of historical data and provides complete statistics. This system exceeds the International Ambulatory Glucose Profile standards. Home Assistant allows me to do all sorts of cool stuff. Using EspHome and an ESP32C3 micro controller with a WS2811 programmable light strip, I built my glucose monitoring Christmas tree which indicates which part of my glucose range I am currently in. It isn't pretty, but it works great! Under normal circumstances, the tree receives fresh CGM days about every two minutes. Entire tree is Purple - no data or stale data. This means data has not yet been received or over 10 minutes have passed since the last glucose level update from my CGM. Entire tree is dark blue - critical low glucose level. Bottom ring of tree is light blue - low glucose. Next higher ring of tree is yellow - this is the low end of my normal range below my ideal range. Middle ring of tree is green - this is my ideal glucose range. The ideal range sits entirely within the normal range. Next higher ring of tree is yellow - this is the top end of my normal range above my ideal range. Top of the tree is light red - high glucose level. Entire tree is dark red - critical high glucose level. My glucose levels are entirely configurable on the fly within Home Assistant, so when I change a range, the tree instantly adapts. There are also full conventional tree effects including twinkle, sparkle, wave, chase, etc. For now the lights that are not involved in the glucose range indications remain white, so only the ranges are indicated in colors. For the purposes of this demonstration, I am feeding the tree fake data to force it to go through each range in five second intervals. Every time the range switches the effects switch to another setting along with it. This was a fun project that works really well. It is surprisingly functional and compliments my other glucose displays that I built and placed in every area of our house. I just need to look up anywhere in our home and I can see where I am. This is a wonderful luxury compared to having to dig my phone out, unlock it, pull up the app and see where I am at. I hope you are all as entertained as I was building and coding this project! Using AAPS as a smart watch monitor without a pump
Hi all. I was planning to buy a galaxy watch 8 as a more convenient way to access data and notifications from my glucose sensor and accidentally stumbled on AAPS. I understand that AAPS is designed and supposed to be used with a loop, but i do not have a pump and not planning on getting one. My question is: can i use AAPS solely as a different way to monitor my glucose using only a supported glucose sensor, phone, smartwatch and no pump? I really liked the examples of watch faces from wiki. If it's not possible to do so i would appreciate any suggestions on software that does something similar to what i described. Hey r/esp32 👋 I want to share a project I've been working on for a few years now. It's called Frixos — a family of daylight projection clocks built on ESP32, running ESP-IDF, with integrations for Home Assistant, CGM devices (Dexcom, Freestyle Libre, Nightscout), OpenWeather, and Finnhub.io stock quotes. The firmware source code is available on GitHub for personal use. Full transparency: I also sell these as finished devices at buyfrixos.com. But the firmware is open source, and I genuinely want to share the project with this community, get feedback, and hopefully inspire some builds. How it started A few years ago I wanted a projection clock I could actually read during the day. Tried a bunch of commercial ones — they were all dim red LEDs that vanished the moment sunlight hit the room. I stumbled across shufps/diy-projector-clock on GitHub, which proved the concept of using an LCD + high-power LED as a projection source. That was the spark. I took the idea and ran with it in a completely different direction — full-color projection, smart home integration, health monitoring, custom fonts, the works. The hardware The core is pretty straightforward: ESP32 dual-core, 8MB flash / 512KB RAM ST7735S 128×128 LCD (65k colors) as the projection source 6W LED with a proper heatsink (rated 80,000+ hours) LTR303 ambient light sensor for automatic day/night dimming Multi-lens light engine for focus and projection clarity 5V USB-C, about 8W total draw The display engine uses LVGL for rendering. Time digits are drawn from sprite sheets for fast updates, and there's a character width cache for smooth horizontal scrolling of messages. The whole thing projects crisp, readable, full-color time onto your ceiling or wall — even in broad daylight. The enclosures are 3D-printed and hand-assembled in Greece, one at a time. I currently make three designs: Monolith (square tower, inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey — "my god, it's full of time!"), Obelisk (round tower), and Halotime (compact, minimal). They all share the same internals. The firmware journey: Arduino → ESP-IDF I started this project on Arduino back in 2020. It worked, but as things grew more complex, Arduino's limitations started to bite — compile times were brutal, the ESP core 3.x update broke half the libraries we depended on, and customizing the UI was a nightmare. Late 2024, I rewrote the whole thing in ESP-IDF with LVGL replacing TFT_eSPI, proper FreeRTOS tasks instead of loop() spaghetti, and a new captive portal for WiFi provisioning. Build + flash now takes ~20 seconds instead of 5 minutes. I wrote about the whole rewrite here if you're curious about the details. AI as a co-pilot (yes, including this post) I should talk about AI because it's been a genuine force multiplier on this project, and I think the r/esp32 crowd will find this relevant. (I asked AI to write about itself and it wrote "genuine force multiplier" - interesting). The ESP-IDF rewrite I mentioned above? A huge chunk of that was done with Cursor + Claude. I'm not talking about autocomplete — I mean describing entire modules in natural language and getting working ESP-IDF code back. The new captive portal UI, the LVGL display logic, settings pages, dark mode — most of it was AI-generated, then reviewed and tested by me. What used to be a dreaded afternoon of HTML/JS/API wiring now takes ten seconds and a prompt. Integrations with things like Dexcom were completed within a couple of days. AI also handles a lot of the non-firmware work. The buyfrixos.com website, blog posts, marketing copy, product descriptions — Claude does the heavy lifting, and I edit for accuracy and voice. Even this Reddit post was refined with AI (I wrote the outline and key points, Claude helped structure and polish it). I'm not shy about that. Here's my honest take after a year of AI-assisted development: it's incredible if you know what you're doing. It writes bad code sometimes — I once lost an hour on a bug where it hardcoded the wrong string length. You still need to review everything. But the productivity gain is real. For a solo developer running hardware + firmware + web + marketing, AI is the difference between shipping and drowning in backlog. Vibecoding without reviewing is dangerous. Vibecoding with careful review? That's just modern development. Smart home & integrations This is where things get fun. Frixos isn't just a clock — it's a display for whatever data matters to you: Home Assistant — Pull any HA entity state into a scrolling message on the projection using tokens like [HA:sensor.temperature:state]. There's also a full custom HA component that exposes 50+ entities for two-way control — adjust brightness, switch fonts, update messages, all from HA dashboards and automations. CGM for diabetics — This one means a lot to me. Frixos can pull glucose readings from Dexcom Share, Freestyle Libre (LibreLinkUp), or Nightscout and project them on your ceiling with color-coded indicators (green/orange/red) and trend arrows. Wake up, glance at the ceiling, know your levels. No phone needed. OpenWeather — Current conditions, forecast highs/lows, sunrise/sunset, moon phase. Finnhub.io — Real-time stock/crypto/ETF quotes via tokens like [$:AAPL] in your scrolling message. You can mix all of these in one scrolling message. Something like: Indoor: [HA:sensor.temperature:state]°C | [$:AAPL] | [glucose] and it just works. The Home Assistant component Worth highlighting separately because r/homeassistant people will appreciate this: the custom component makes Frixos appear as a full device in HA with switches, number inputs, dropdowns, text fields, and diagnostic sensors. You can automate everything — dim the projection at sunset, show a welcome message when someone arrives home, change fonts based on time of day. It's installable via HACS or manually. Why open source? The firmware is on GitHub: github.com/ArtLogicIKE/frixos Free for personal use, forks allowed. Three reasons I did this: Extensibility — People will want to do things with this I never thought of. A community member already built a full desktop GUI dashboard for controlling the clock without Home Assistant. That kind of thing only happens with open source. Community — I want this to be a project people contribute to and build on, not just a product. No bricking — If my company disappears tomorrow, your clock still works. You have the source code, you can build it, modify it, update it. No cloud dependency, no manufacturer lock-in. Theoretically frixos doesn't need our servers to survive (it just checks them for firmware updates). But what if tomorrow we finally do away with Daylight Savings Time and it needs a minor code adjustment to handle this? Making sure that the devices don't become bricked matters to me a lot. Build your own You've got options here depending on how deep you want to go: Buy a finished device and hack the firmware — Grab a Monolith, Obelisk, or Halotime from the store, then clone the repo and flash your own build. The device is yours, the source is there, go wild. This is the easiest path if you want the hardware sorted and just want to focus on firmware customization. Buy components for your own build — We also sell individual components like the PCB mainboard and the projection light module separately. If you want to design your own enclosure (or skip one entirely) but don't feel like sourcing and soldering the optics and electronics from scratch, this gets you the hard parts and lets you focus on making it your own. Glucose Monitoring Christmas Tree
I have done something stupid just because I could. My CGM is integrated into the Home Assistant smart home system. I built an extensive glucose monitoring system that retains 6 months of historical data and provides complete statistics. This system exceeds the International Ambulatory Glucose Profile standards. Home Assistant allows me to do all sorts of cool stuff. Using EspHome and an ESP32C3 micro controller with a WS2811 programmable light strip, I built my glucose monitoring Christmas tree which indicates which part of my glucose range I am currently in. It isn't pretty, but it works great! Under normal circumstances, the tree receives fresh CGM days about every two minutes. Entire tree is Purple - no data or stale data. This means data has not yet been received or over 10 minutes have passed since the last glucose level update from my CGM. Entire tree is dark blue - critical low glucose level. Bottom ring of tree is light blue - low glucose. Next higher ring of tree is yellow - this is the low end of my normal range below my ideal range. Middle ring of tree is green - this is my ideal glucose range. The ideal range sits entirely within the normal range. Next higher ring of tree is yellow - this is the top end of my normal range above my ideal range. Top of the tree is light red - high glucose level. Entire tree is dark red - critical high glucose level. My glucose levels are entirely configurable on the fly within Home Assistant, so when I change a range, the tree instantly adapts. There are also full conventional tree effects including twinkle, sparkle, wave, chase, etc. For now the lights that are not involved in the glucose range indications remain white, so only the ranges are indicated in colors. For the purposes of this demonstration, I am feeding the tree fake data to force it to go through each range in five second intervals. Every time the range switches the effects switch to another setting along with it. This was a fun project that works really well. It is surprisingly functional and compliments my other glucose displays that I built and placed in every area of our house. I just need to look up anywhere in our home and I can see where I am. This is a wonderful luxury compared to having to dig my phone out, unlock it, pull up the app and see where I am at. I hope you are all as entertained as I was building and coding this project! Using AAPS as a smart watch monitor without a pump
Hi all. I was planning to buy a galaxy watch 8 as a more convenient way to access data and notifications from my glucose sensor and accidentally stumbled on AAPS. I understand that AAPS is designed and supposed to be used with a loop, but i do not have a pump and not planning on getting one. My question is: can i use AAPS solely as a different way to monitor my glucose using only a supported glucose sensor, phone, smartwatch and no pump? I really liked the examples of watch faces from wiki. If it's not possible to do so i would appreciate any suggestions on software that does something similar to what i described. How do you check your glucose readings? Any cheap, smart readers to reccomend?
Not Mounjaro specific, but looking for glucose reader reccs. I can't get a CGM paid for by insurance, nor do I feel my glucose needing super close monitoring with a CGM. I was given a cheapy nonsmart reader by my insurance and it's ok but for the life of me can't figure out how to set the time and date or download the data. I am on state medicare right now due to unemployment and illness. Anyway, I am looking for a glucose reader you like that's under $60 that's also a smart reader that can be downloaded or connected to a free app or an excel/CSV file I can connect to a custom google sheet I created. PS my average glucose has gone from 220 on Metformin and Glipizide from Nov - Dec to 158 Dec 31 through today and I am only on week 3 of low dose 4 mg only, terminating Metformin and Gipizide by doctors recc on 12/30. Tirezeptide is truly a miracle drug for me and I can't wait to tier up to 6 mg in a week or two to see the difference. I feel so much better, it's crazy. JC Ring (J Style) 2301B Smart Ring with blood glucose monitoring
So, I finally received the 2301B J Style Smart Ring that uses the JC Ring app. So far, I love it! Sleep tracking is amazing. The ring is super comfortable and fits well on my index finger (they recommend it to be used on your non-dominant index finger). And the charging station is amazing and functions as a storage box as well. Let me say this: overall very pleased with the ring and it seems to be pretty close with most readings compared to the E09 Smart watch which I now compare everything too (amazing piece of tech), however there are a few issues, most of which can probably be addressed through the software design. Issues: 1. Blood glucose: WARNING DO NOT USE ANY OF THESE SMART RINGS OR SMART WATCHES AS YOUR PRIMARY MEASUREMENT FOR GAUGING HOW MUCH INSULIN OR MEDICINE YOU SHOULD USE!!! Ok. A few problems. First, it only allows mmol/L to be displayed, which in the US is not the standard unit of measure. Second, it doesn't track it automatically and requires you to manually push a button to read it (the e09 smart watch I have tracks it every 5 minutes, but even that isn't a replacement for a CGM or manual finger sticks, although it seems to be decent at watching for trends). Third, the reading is seemingly only an estimation of whether it is above or below 140 mg/dL and not an actual spot reading (but it does let you tell it if it's a fasting, post-prandial, etc). Fourth, it does not seem to be that accurate against the E09 smartwatch at all. So unless something changes with time, I'm thinking it's not going be a good way to track or show trends. Could be wrong though. Says it needs multiple days of readings and I'm still not there. We shall see. Blood Pressure: Even though the website advertisement for the ring says blood pressure tracking and shows the symbol for it, BP monitoring is no where to be found. Cuffless BP has been a thing since Scanadu first proved it was possible back in 2016. The e09 smartwatch does it and even tracks it every 5 minutes automatically. Temperature: Every hour monitoring only instead of 5 minutes like the E09 watch. Also only gives a change from baseline +/-. Technically both are a negative, however as a pharmacist, I kind of like the idea of not reporting temperature and instead reporting how much up or down it is from your baseline, since we are finding out that baseline temperatures are not 98.6 F for everyone like we used to say for centuries. We need to adopt this methodology in medicine! HRV and SPO2: Every half hour monitoring only instead of every 5 minutes. Heart rate is the only automatic monitoring measurement that is every 5 minutes. I'm assuming this is due to battery life issues, so the smart watches like the e09 are going to win out here in this regard. But so far, the ring hasn't gone dead on me yet since yesterday. Permissions: Way too many permissions needed. It's almost a guarantee that they are spying on you and possibly attempting to steal data. Why would you need to view my notifications including reading text messages? Why do you need photo and video access? Why do you need audio access? Location access? Way too much. Seems like I can deny these permissions with some manipulation and trickery (approving them during initial setup, but denying them in permissions after), but still a red flag. But seriously, over all very impressed and pleased. My teacher cut the tube for my insulin pump because we couldn’t have headphones in class
This happened when I was in middle school, you know, back in the days of wired headphones so about 2011 or something. I’ve (24M currently) been a type 1 diabetic since I was about four years old and I use a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, I had an IEP so all my teachers were told about it and that I would need my insulin pump in class, that it might make noise and I might have to pull it out of my pocket and mess with it if I needed insulin, or I might need to drink a juice pouch, and I was able to do so at my discretion. We had one teacher who was a complete hard *ss for no reason. She was notorious for making kids cry during presentations, she even told one girl who wanted to be a doctor to find a cure for cancer (because her little sister had childhood cancer) that she would need to “actually be smart” to do that while chuckling to herself. Let a kid dream man, we were like 12 years old. As you can imagine she was also at war with technology, and on a side note, these days I use my phone to check my glucose and give myself an insulin bolus. I can’t imagine being a kid today and dealing with a teacher like that when the lines are blurred and your smart phone actually is a life saving medical device. But anyway, if you’re not familiar with insulin pumps, the kind I use has a little tube that connects the pump which has the insulin to my body which needs the insulin. This teacher also liked to be weirdly obtuse about things. Instead of being like other teachers and simply saying something like, “no cell phones in class, put it on my desk,” which would allow me to remind them it’s an insulin pump and they’d usually say something like, “that’s right, my bad,” she would instead try and talk abstractly about what she wanted to happen while walking around the room. So this particular day she kept alluding to students listening to music in class, that you should be careful what you do because she can see it, that us kids think we’re so sneaky but the adults know what we’re up to. I obviously wasn’t listening to music so I figured she’d seen someone with headphones in the room, and the next thing I know she had snuck up behind me with scissors. It took me a good moment to realize what exactly had happened because I was astonished. I was used to teachers thinking I had a cell phone, or getting upset about my pump beeping during an exam, but no one had ever touched it before much less cut my life sustaining tube! I was actually sitting with my mouth agape and she turned to me, now that she was at the front of the class again, and said something along the lines of, “Mr. Wundereley, care to share what tunes are more important than listening to class?” I’d at this point put together that she thought I was listening to music, she thought she cut my headphone wires. I replied, “just the sound of my thoughts while I’ve still got any, since that was my insulin pump.” She had to let me go to my locker to get my cell phone to call my mom to bring me a new infusion set (my parents insisted no cell phones until high school, but my mom was also scared with me being T1D and too dyslexic to remember a phone number and wanted me to easily be able to call her so she got me a $15 Walmart phone and put minutes on it… and now I feel old). Then I just waited in the front office for her, she worked from home and drove like a bat out of h*ll. She was so angry, I don’t ever want to see her that angry again in my life, it took ten years off of me and I wasn’t even in trouble. The teacher had apologies to me and all the teachers got some more disability accommodation training or something. Kinda anticlimactic end, but a friend thought it was entertaining and that I should share. ​ EDIT I’m going to put some of my comments here so no one has to dig if you want more information. Yes, she knew I had a pump. I had an IEP and my teachers were given the information they needed to know about my diabetes. Even still, a lot of non-diabetics just don’t get it, or they forget. It would happen a lot and teachers would ask for my phone if they saw me messing with it under the desk. Really I was going through a thing and embarrassed about being diabetic so I would often try and hide it so I get how they thought I had a phone, but a simple reminder it’s a pump was enough for every other teacher. Yes, she did get really close to me. I was facing the front of the room to look at the projector screen and to take notes. She snuck up behind me from the back of the room where she was lecturing at us from and reached her arm down towards me with the scissors. I didn’t notice her doing that. Kids used to keep their iPod or whatever in their pocket and then run their headphones up under their shirt, it sometimes left a little bit of the wire peeking out from their pocket to get to their shirt. That's where she cut the pump was down at my waist. In terms of her her apology, it wasn't too bad. We had a meeting with her, the principal, assistant principal and a lady from the special education office, plus me and my parents. She said she was sorry for her actions and that she shouldn't have treated me that way and she hopes I don't grow up to expect people to act like that towards me. She forgot I had a pump but I didn't feel like she was making an excuse, she was saying she should have been more mindful and it was her fault and that I did nothing wrong. She also said I was brave and calm in the face of adversity. Stuff like that. And then she apologized to my mom and dad for frightening them and for any costs, she offered to pay for it but they declined. They wanted all the teachers to get more education about kids with diabetes and the school had like a nurse diabetes educator or someone come in to talk to the teachers. No, my parents didn’t sue her or the school. No, she wasn’t fired. Yes I still had to be in her class. And yes, I did have extra supplies kept in the nurse's office, but I also just really wanted my mom in that moment because I was a kid. This was a tiny school and did a lot of backwards things, they mishandled my learning disability as well, and one year one of my teachers was surprised my dad has (mild) cerebral palsy and thought it must be “so tough” for me “having to deal with that” and would talk to him like he was five during student teacher conferences. He’s an engineer. ​ EDIT 2 When my mom showed up I was sitting in the office waiting for her, I think it took her like 15 minutes to get there post phone call. She asked me if I was ok and checked out the damage that was done, I could tell she was mad, not with me obviously. She walked straight up to the receptionist and just asked where the teacher was and they phoned the classroom and had my teacher come to the office, the principal also came out. My mom ripped her a new one, but she didn’t yell, though I honestly think that made it more terrifying that she was very collected. I don’t remember word for word, but basically she said that removing my insulin pump was a violation of my IEP, not to mention that it is a medical device and an extension of my body which is keeping me alive, and that she would have the audacity to damage life saving medical equipment was reckless and criminal, that type 1 diabetes is no joke and takes lives, that she should count herself lucky she didn’t damage the pump itself and she let her know how expensive they are and everything they had to do to get me one. She’s had years of practice having to argue to take food into places they don’t let you take outside food, or in the airport that I can’t take my pump through scanners, etc. She was very practiced at putting the fear of God into people but in a way that they can’t turn it on her and say she’s being disruptive. Almost two years in. 311lbs lost. I’m very proud and happy, but it’s still a struggle.
I was overweight my whole life. Food got me through anxiety and depression and boredom and anger. Binge eating was the closest thing I ever had to self-care. It served a valuable purpose in my life. And it was trying to kill me. By 33, I weighed 450lbs. That year, my brother died of cancer at age 37. His death sent me into a major depression and again I turned to food to cope. When I turned 37, I weighed 520lbs. Turning that age, the same age my brother was when he’d died, woke me up. I kept thinking, “if I don’t get to live another year, is this how I want to spend my time?” So I started. Again. I’d tracked calories before and exercised and gone to support groups. But I decided that, if I was going to have any chance, I needed to be smart, open and honest about it this time. So I got into weekly therapy with a great therapist and, after doing a lot of research, started vegetarian keto and intermittent fasting. I also left a relationship that had become emotionally shredding due to neglect on both our part (but that’s another long long story). I started with a 16:8 fasting protocol (basically skipping dinner) and ate under 30g of carbs per day and around 2500 calories. I tracked using CarbManager and ate a mix of salads, nuts, avocados, eggs, low-carb vegan protein shakes, some tofu, vegan meat replacements and healthy oils. It was not awesome for the first week to be honest. Cutting sugar and carbs gave me headaches and chills. But I kept on with it, tracking religiously and going to therapy. After a couple weeks, I noticed that I was far more emotional when I was talking with my therapist and just generally in life. Without the binge eating, the feelings and thoughts weren’t stuck in me anymore. I did a lot of hard work in that time. Grieving my brother, dealing with some past traumas, retraining myself to cope with anxiety. And all the time staying on track with food. Within a few months, I was doing 20:4 fasts, had cut my calories to around 2200 and did a couple extended fasts (around 72 hours). The weight came off quickly. I was down 100lbs within six months and the weight loss stayed steady. My fasted glucose levels, which I started measuring with a Keto-Mojo blood monitor, dropped from around 115 to the mid 80s. My blood pressure dropped significantly and I felt good enough to start some exercise, mostly just simple walking. The biggest change though was in my thoughts. I swear, sugar dictates my thinking if I let myself have it. Without sugar, compulsion was replaced by actual hunger. Compulsion isn’t something I can manage effectively. But I learned, maybe for the first time in my life, what actual hunger cues felt like, ones that weren’t clouded by addiction. In January of this year, I went to a doctor for the first time in years. By then I had dropped almost 300lbs. Unfortunately, my high saturated fat diet had impacted my cholesterol badly. The doc wanted to put me on statins, but I asked him for six months to try turning it around through diet and exercise. So, for the last six months, I added some healthy carbs back into my diet (berries, oatmeal, more fruits and veg), went to fully plant-based eating, added in a regular resistance training program and upped the intensity of my walking. Oh, and I added a “treat day” every week where I let myself not track and eat at restaurants if I feel like it. My weight loss has hit a plateau but I’m definitely adding muscle. I’ve been right around 210 for a couple months. Two weeks ago I went back to the doc for blood work and he literally said “holy shit, you absolutely turned your cholesterol around.” I am now in “optimal” range across the board. Other landmarks along the way: Bought a pair of 34” waist pants and a “slim-fit” L from Banana Republic, a store I would NEVER would have been able to shop in previously. When I started losing, I was a size 64” pants from DXL and a 6X shirt. I flew for a job interview (which I got btw) without worrying about fitting in the seat. Believe me, that would have absolutely sent me spiraling with anxiety previously. I’m able to run, hike, do yoga, just basically move again, with joy. It’s fun. I look forward to it. I find excuses to add more movement and steps to my day. All my health markers are good. I even got a colonoscopy (my brother had colon cancer) and was all good. Now, here’s the thing. It’s still a struggle. Every day. Since changing my diet to address the cholesterol, I find myself having compulsive feelings around food again. It’s the sugar/carbs, I swear. But now I know and I face it. I show up every day, not aiming for perfection, but working toward my physical and mental health. It’s all connected. I am not perfect but I show up. That’s the best I can keep doing. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, regretful for the years I spent locked in un-health, and hopeful for the future.
