Colouring by u/_thecapedbaldy. Versus is a manga by ONE (creator of One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100) centered around humanity surviving in a world where it can’t hope to defeat its natural enemies. Specifically, it follows 13 different versions of humanity from 13 separate worlds, each with its own natural enemy, history, and culture. I think the character designs for each human race do a great job of conveying that they come from entirely different worlds while still feeling distinctly human. Each race is identifiable through exaggerated body types and facial features, but those differences are grounded in logical environmental factors. People from hotter or more jungle-like worlds tend to have darker skin, while those from worlds where physical labor isn’t necessary appear more out of shape, and so on. Even in terms of fashion; there are two “sci-fi” worlds, but one leans toward practical gear out of necessity, while the other features more flamboyant hairstyles and bold colors. A lot of media tends to reduce race to just skin color, or go in the opposite direction and make groups so fundamentally different that it’s hard to believe they’re the same species. Spoilers used in case you have not read it yourself. I dug up some posts in this sub from like 3 years ago (I will link one below) and they held mostly negative opinions on this series. Is it me or is One's new "Versus" bad Some of the main talking points were "too ambitious of a setting" or "lack of engaging characters" which I agree with to an extent. I presume a lot of this negativity came from those who were very salty about how manga Garou was handled and under the belief that ONE had lost his touch. So do we still hold this opinion? Present day this sub's consensus has shifted from "ONE lost his touch" to "Murata is writing the manga" so I would imagine a lot of opmfolkers refusing to talk negatively about this work. Personally when I picked up Versus I never viewed it negatively. I thought the concept of 13 enemy factions fighting each other was really interesting. It's an ambitious concept to establish so I can see how characterization got sidelined in early chapters. Now with all that established we're getting better character writing (although the natural enemies are far more intersting than the humans) plus some of that juicy prime action starring Jachi. Edit: I’m going to make an edit so you don’t flame me here. What I’m saying is meant to show that versus mode is supposed to be a game that isn’t lawless. It’s supposed to create the “ranking” system that modern games have, but can’t be created properly in older games. My take on versus is the community is not toxic, it’s misunderstood. You can’t go from campaign to survival to versus and expect it to be the same experience. The mode is destroying itself. Valve created this monster. I admit, it is not new player friendly, the need for social hierarchy is human psychology. It’s why the servers are set up the way they are. You’re picked if you’re bad because people need to feel powerful. Valve didn’t implement a system for skill other than private servers. So before you flame me, please read what I had originally, it didn’t sound as good. We’re not toxic, people don’t follow the rules. We have built a community that thrives on low-context communication. We expect people to know what different signals mean, and when. We expect people to know the unwritten rules of versus, and how to play each special infected. We expect people to know what it means if I am shooting you, and why I’m shooting you. When you join a lobby, we expect you to make decisions based on the teams needs, because it’s a team game, and we expect you to follow the “unwritten rules” which isn’t even hard, it’s just common sense things that make the game easier for everyone, such as watching your teammates backs, sharing the pills, or staying with your teammates. We don’t have high tolerance for mistakes. It’s a 16 year old game, with a PvP that punishes teams for fruitless mistakes. You are allowed to make mistakes, but when it is hurting the team, or could hurt the team, you are going to get kicked. This game is a game that requires critical thinking skills. I hate to even say this like a teacher, but you need to have contextual awareness, and the ability to understand indirect communication. If I am shoving you over and over again I am telling you something. I am telling you something about the current environment or situation, and you need to be able to read it properly.
