Whats the most boring buy it for life item you own that turned out to be amazing?
Everyone always talks about the big obvious stuff here like cast iron pans, boots, or expensive jackets but im curious about the boring items that ended up being surprisingly great, for me it was a simple stainless steel water bottle, nothing fancy just a basic klean kanteen i bought years ago thinking it would last maybe a couple years. Its been dropped, taken on trips, thrown in backpacks and it still works perfectly also the outside looks beat up but it somehow refuses to die. The same thing happened with a pair of darn tough socks i got as a gift, i thought the hype around socks was a bit ridiculous but after a few years they still look almost new compared to the cheap ones i used to buy constantly, the funny thing is when i was trying to find a few more pairs later it was weirdly hard to compare the different models online because most listings barely show all the details or photos and half the good ones were already sold out before i even finished checking them, im curious what boring everyday item you bought that turned out to be unexpectedly buy it for life quality? submitted by /u/GolfPrevious4299 to r/BuyItForLife [link] [comments]

Folks who work in DC but live elsewhere: do you keep keep a "get home bag" in the office?
Edit: This refers to the streets essentially being undrivable due to response vehicles, but it's safe enough to walk out. After 9/11 I started keeping a small backpack in the office with a pair of old but serviceable hiking boots, good socks, tech material pants, a tee shirt, a hoodie, and a poncho, in my office. I keep bottled water and snack bars alongside it for regular consumption. I grab it for every fire drill. A few folks have asked me about it when we were filing in and out, and I just tell them I only live about 4 miles away in VA and I want the option to walk home not in a suit if I need it. Just curious if anyone else does the same. submitted by /u/Brewer1056 to r/washingtondc [link] [comments]

Tom Bihn water bottle fit guide — comfortable fits, not "jam it in there"
Quick note: I regularly get replies claiming my posts are AI-generated because I use structured formatting and complete sentences. I was a copy editor — I know the CP style guide, and I format longer posts so they're actually readable. If you don't want to read it, skip it. Please don't waste a comment telling me it's AI. It isn't. I see the "what bottle fits my TB bag?" question pop up constantly, so here's a field guide based on TB product pages, the official Techonaut FAQ, forum reports (shoutout to moriond's tireless testing), and third-party reviews. Covers 28 bags. Three things to know first: Cap type matters as much as bottle diameter. A flat cap vs. a straw lid can mean a 1–1.5" height difference — enough to go from "zips shut" to "won't close." Swap to a flat cap before giving up on a bottle. A stuffed bag = a tighter bottle pocket. The Synapse/Synik centre pockets share wall space with the main compartment. Pack the bottle first if you're loading out. "Fits" and "fits comfortably with the zipper closed" aren't the same thing. This guide is about the second one. Use actual bottle height, not packaging height. Some retailers list packaging dimensions (e.g., the HF 24 oz SM shows up as 12.45" on some sites — that's the box, not the bottle; the actual bottle is 10.8"). Always treat the lid as part of the measurement. BACKPACKS — DEDICATED BOTTLE POCKETS Synapse 19 / Synik 22 / Synik 26 — Centre zippered pocket, which TB describes as a "32 oz water bottle pocket". The Synik FAQ confirms pocket height is 10.25" for the Sy22 and Sy26. In practice, bottles up to ~9.5" generally zip without issue; between 9.5–10.25" becomes cap- and load-dependent. The Sy26 launched in 2024 and slots between the 22 and 30, but TB's own design notes confirm its bottle pocket is the same height as the Sy22, not the Sy30. For bottle purposes, treat it like the 22. Bottle Fit Notes Nalgene 32 oz WM ✅ TB calls this a "32 oz water bottle pocket" — the Nalgene is the reference bottle HF 21 oz SM (9.4" w/ Flex Cap) ✅ Best insulated option — right at the height limit Yeti 18 oz ✅ Great everyday insulated fit Zojirushi 16–20 oz ✅ Slim diameter, easy in/out Miir 20 oz insulated ✅ ~10–10.5" total; cap taper tucks into pocket depth — confirmed fit (u/dc_in_sf in Sy22) HF 32 oz WM ⚠️ Sy22/26: takes some doing. S19: fits with a light load Yeti 26 oz / HF 24 oz SM ❌ Too tall (~10.8–10.9") — won't zip HF 40 oz ❌ Too tall, too wide Side pockets fit a 16 oz Nalgene or Klean Kanteen for a secondary bottle. Silicone bottle boots add enough friction and diameter to turn a smooth fit into a tight one — remove them if you're on the edge. Straw cap / handled lid warning: Caps with handles or protruding straw mechanisms (Yeti Bottle Straw Cap, Owala FreeSip lid, etc.) can require specific orientation to zip and may squeeze the smaller vertical pocket directly below the bottle pocket on the S19. If you're using one of these caps, test the fit before committing. Community data point: u/Bevis5421 reports an Owala FreeSip 24 oz fitting in an S19 centre pocket. At 10.68" tall (Owala's spec), this is well past the 9.5" guideline — it likely protrudes and may not fully zip. The slim 3.12" diameter helps, but your mileage will vary depending on bag load and cap type. Synapse 25 / Synik 30 — Centre zippered pocket. Pocket height is 10.5" per the Synik FAQ. Bigger than above — the 32 oz sweet spot opens right up to insulated bottles here. Bottle Fit Notes Nalgene 32 oz WM ✅ Born for this pocket HF 32 oz WM (straw lid) ✅ Forum consensus: "fits about as perfect as a water bottle can fit" Klean Kanteen Wide 27 oz ✅ At ~9.5" with loop cap (2.87" diameter), leaves room for a mini umbrella beside it. Note: the Classic 27 oz with Sport Cap is 10.85" — too tall for this pocket Yeti 36 oz (TripleHaul cap) ⚠️ Barely fits. Chug cap does NOT fit — the Chug adds roughly an inch of height over the TripleHaul HF 40 oz WM (flat cap) ⚠️ S25: fits, can't fully zip. Sy30: fits but bulges HF 24 oz SM ❌ Too tall — cap height puts it over the limit even though it's narrower than the 32 oz WM Owala 32 oz ⚠️ Fits tightly, mouth must face main compartment — the FreeSip button/lock mechanism snags on the zipper otherwise. About the max bottle size for this pocket (u/The_War_In_Me) S25 side pockets each fit a 16–18 oz Klean Kanteen or slim Zojirushi — great for hikers wanting two bottles. A memobottle Slim (15 oz, flat) also fits perfectly here with minimal pocket bulge (u/DAZ_50). Techonaut 30 & 45 — Side zippered pockets that eat into main compartment space. The left side pocket (no handle) is the bottle pocket. T30: Go small. A 16 oz Nalgene or Yeti 18 oz is the comfort zone. A 32 oz Nalgene physically fits but significantly eats into the interior. One forum user carries a 16 oz REI Nalgene here and that's the practical sweet spot. Pro tip: A memobottle Slim (15 oz, flat profile at only 1.2" thick) fits perfectly and barely intrudes into the main compartment — the flat shape is ideal for these pockets (u/DAZ_50). T45: More generous. A 40 oz Hydro Flask fits in the side pocket (confirmed in Griffin S.'s product page review — appears to be with a flat cap). A 27 oz Klean Kanteen was photographed fitting in the left quick-access pocket, but it's harder to use when fully packed. The 20–24 oz range is "no drama" territory. TB's own Techonaut FAQ says it plainly: "Collapsible, packable water bottles are always a great option for lighter travel." Luminary 15 (& 12) — Centre zippered pocket, narrower than Synapse/Synik. moriond measured the pocket depth at 4.1" — wider than any standard bottle diameter, so width isn't the issue. A 32 oz Nalgene fits the L15 and a 24 oz Takeya (10.38" tall) has been confirmed too, so the pocket is more generous on height than you'd expect. Zojirushi 16 oz is the safe insulated pick. For the L12, drop one size: 16 oz Nalgene or Zojirushi 12 oz. Bixi — Dedicated side pocket that doesn't eat into the main compartment (unlike the Techonauts). Lighter-weight construction than Synik pockets — don't overload it. A 27 oz Klean Kanteen Classic (non-insulated, ~2.9" diameter) was photographed fitting, but it's tight when fully packed. Yeti 18 oz or Zojirushi 16–20 oz are safer bets. BACKPACKS — NO DEDICATED POCKET Smart Alec — Expanding water bottle side pocket fits bottles up to 1.5L. A 1L Sigg fits well. The pocket is more generous than Synapse/Synik side pockets. Shadow Guide 23 & 33 — Top-loader, no bottle pocket. Bottle goes in the main compartment (pack it first) or the top lid pocket (16 oz Nalgene fits alongside other items). The Padded Hip Belt Pocket accessory fits up to a 24 oz HF externally. Aeronaut 30 & 45 — No dedicated bottle pocket — this is literally why TB created the Techonaut. Quick-access pockets can hold a slim Zojirushi 12–16 oz, but most A30/A45 users put the bottle in the main compartment. Collapsible bottles are the move here. Brain Bag — External mesh side pocket (non-stretchy). Yeti Rambler 18 oz confirmed fit (Pack Hacker). Nalgene 32 oz WM is a safe bet given the pocket dimensions. Daylight Backpack — No external bottle pocket. Flat bottles work best in the front pocket. A 16 oz Nalgene fits upright in there. Round bottles go in the main compartment with a stuff sack to keep them upright. Paradigm — 3D front pocket split into three sections; centre section is a dedicated bottle pocket (max ~9" tall). 16 oz Nalgene and 16 oz HF WM with flat cap both fit great. 16 oz HF with Flex Sip lid fits but zips snug. Yeti 16 and 20 oz tumblers fit but the 3.5" width makes them tight to get in and out (u/CantFindNeutral). Larger bottles go in the main compartment. Paragon / Paragon 2.0 — No dedicated bottle pocket (no side pockets either). Bottles go in the main compartment — a 40 oz HF fits with room to spare. The Guide's Edition lash tab can hold a bottle via carabiner externally. Insulated bottles recommended since there's no separation from electronics. BRIEFCASES & SHOULDER BAGS Pilot — Centre front pocket, more generous than the Co-Pilot. Fits up to about 10.5" tall. Bottle Fit Notes HF 32 oz Trail Series ✅ Confirmed in the centre pocket — about as large as you'd want. Zipper may not fully close over it LifeFactory 22 oz / Nalgene 32 oz ✅ Clean fit Klean Kanteen 18 oz / Contigo 16 oz ✅ Solid everyday picks HF 40 oz WM ❌ Tested and confirmed NO (LifeFactory 22 oz = perfect, HF 21 oz = yes, HF 40 oz = no) Low-profile caps help if you want the pocket to zip shut cleanly. Co-Pilot — Smaller pocket. Designed for bottles ~9" tall max, 2.9–3.2" diameter. Largest confirmed fit: 1L Sigg (non-insulated, narrow cap — volume comes from width, not height). Bottle Fit Notes Nalgene 16 oz / Klean Kanteen 18 oz ✅ Comfortable Zojirushi 20 oz stainless steel ✅ Fully zips with wiggle room (u/Flip_Lx) — note: Zojirushi 20 oz models vary by ~0.9" in height; compact models (SM-VA60, 9.25") fit easily, taller ones (SM-QHE60, 10.1") likely won't Owala 20 oz tumbler ⚠️ User reports easy in/out (u/whitezhang), but the 3.73" flared top exceeds stated pocket width — may not fully zip depending on load Owala 25 oz non-insulated ⚠️ Fully zips but snug on height (u/Flip_Lx) Klean Kanteen Insulated 20 oz / Zojirushi 16 oz ✅ A wee bit tight but works Owala 24 oz insulated ❌ Doesn't fit nicely — pocket must stay unzipped. The insulation adds enough width to kill it (u/Flip_Lx) HF 32 oz Trail Series (10.2") ❌ "Not even close" per forum testing HF 32 oz WM (9.4") ❌ Doesn't fit, even capless Western Flyer — Curved zippered pocket is general storage, not a dedicated vertical bottle holder. A 1L Nalgene fits but a 27 oz Klean Kanteen reportedly does not. Best used for slim bottles in briefcase orientation. Maker's Bag — Elastic end pockets, ~2.9–3.0" ideal diameter. Contigo 16 oz, Yeti 18 oz, or Klean Kanteen 18 oz are good picks. A Nalgene 32 oz WM at 3.5" is probably too wide for the elastic — no one's confirmed it and it would likely cause the bag to bow. Tall/bulky caps don't work here. Marathon Messenger — Two internal elasticized mesh pockets at both ends of the main compartment, accessible without opening the flap via the lateral side openings. At 11" bag height, a Nalgene 32 oz WM (8.25") fits upright with room to spare. HF 21 oz SM (9.4") is a safe insulated pick. Zojirushi 16–20 oz is ideal — slim enough for easy in/out and leak-proof for a bag that rides against your body. Note: because this is a cross-body bag, bulky rigid bottles (32 oz insulated) can feel uncomfortable against the hip/back during long carries. Slim bottles are the way to go here. SMALL CARRY Side Hustle — A 16 oz Nalgene fits "perfectly" per forum reports. Zojirushi 16–20 oz is the sweet spot. Side Kick — Smaller than the Side Hustle. Stay at Zojirushi 12–16 oz or similar slim thermos. Anything wider than ~2.9" dominates the interior. Side Effect — A 16 oz (500 ml) Nalgene fits comfortably but takes up about half the interior (u/Orthas_). Slim bottles (Zojirushi 12–16 oz) are more practical for this bag. Cambiata — Dedicated zippered exterior pocket that fits up to a 40 oz Hydro Flask per the Cambiata FAQ. HF 20 oz WM fits perfectly (u/pelicanscoop). The pocket is far more generous than most TB bags — slim 20 oz insulated bottles are the easy-win sweet spot, but you have room to go bigger. Café Bags (S/M) — No dedicated pocket. Slim leakproof bottles only (Zojirushi with locking lid is a forum favourite since these are open-top flap bags). Small: 12–16 oz slim. Medium: up to 20 oz slim. Le Grand Derrière — TB FAQ: 8–18 oz upright in the middle. Larger bottles can lay lengthwise. Shop Bags (Zip-Top & Open-Top, S/L) — Two interior 3D pockets that TB describes as "ideal for items like wine or water bottles." A Nalgene 32 oz or HF 32 oz WM fits easily in these pockets. These are tote bags, not EDC — but if you're using one as a personal item or grocery bag, the bottle pockets actually work well. ONE BOTTLE TO RULE THEM ALL If you want to simplify: Non-insulated universal: Nalgene 32 oz WM (8.25" × 3.5") — fits every TB bag with a dedicated pocket from the S19 up. TB describes this as a "32 oz water bottle pocket" across the Synapse/Synik line. Insulated for S25/Sy30: HF 32 oz WM with straw lid Insulated for S19/Sy22/Sy26: HF 21 oz SM (9.4" × 2.87") or Yeti 18 oz Small-bag friendly: Zojirushi 16 oz — the 2.8" diameter fits everything including slings and briefcases Travel (Techonaut/Aeronaut): Collapsible (Platypus, HydraPak) — TB's own recommendation per the Techonaut FAQ QUICK TIPS Flat caps save you. The HF Flex Cap saves over an inch vs. the Straw Lid. This alone can make a bottle fit. Also: the Nalgene OTF cap adds about 1.25" of height over the standard loop cap — enough to turn a clean fit into "won't zip" in the S19/Sy22/Sy26. Insulated = wider. Double-wall insulation adds width, but the amount varies by brand — anywhere from 0.1" (Klean Kanteen) to 0.4" (Hydro Flask). Check the specific bottle's diameter, don't assume. Silicone boots matter. They add diameter and friction. A 24 oz Takeya that slides in easily without the boot becomes a tight squeeze with it on. Remove the boot if you're on the border. Watch for condensation. Non-insulated bottles sweat. If you're carrying a cold Nalgene in a centre pocket, the moisture sits against the bag lining. Forum members have flagged this — a neoprene sleeve or just going insulated avoids the issue. Stanley Quencher won't fit. The tapered design (~3.5–4" top rim), protruding handle, and overall width make it incompatible with basically every dedicated TB bottle pocket. Main compartment only. The Zojirushi cheat code. At ~2.8" diameter, Zojirushi fits in virtually every TB pocket. The SM-VA60 (20 oz) specs 6-hour heat/cold retention — among the best in the slim-bottle category — and the flip-lid with safety lock makes it leak-proof in open-top bags like the Café. The 16–20 oz models are forum favourites for a reason. Compiled from: TB Forums, official TB product pages/FAQs including the Techonaut FAQ, Cambiata FAQ, and Synik FAQ, Synik 26 Production & Design Notes, Pack Hacker, Alex Kwa, Carryology, HalfHalfTravel, The Packable Life, and individual forum member testing. Former Army Ranger/Sniper & Long Distance thru-hiker here. Your bugout loadouts are unhinged.
Loadout: 50+ mile Sniper Adventure Challenge Race Kit (you don’t need this for bugging out!) Hey guys. I don’t thinks that having a military background makes somebody immediately qualified to give advice about prepping or moving over land. I actually think that a lot of Veterans overpack and are focus focused on the wrong thing for prepping or “bugging out”. We were trained to have logistics, supply, and fight. If you go into one of these situations with that mindset, you will be carrying way too much stuff. Following my time in the Ranger Regiment and as a conventional sniper, I started knocking out multi hundred mile treks around the United States. Dude, I ate so much humble pie from carrying too much weight and not understanding what it means to truly self support. In the military, you assume, “one is none and two is one”, meaning: you need to have redundancy in your gear. My pack for hiking the 800 mile Arizona Trail weighed about 22 pounds, 30 pounds when I had to walk 20 miles plus with no water points. I had a full kit: Bivy sleeping bag, water, filtration, and food for about five days. I covered +/- 30 miles a day for 40 days from the Mexican border to Utah. I experienced heat exhaustion and some gnarly foot injuries that I had to take care of out in the field. All this to say: you guys are carrying way too much stuff if you plan on walking 20 miles with no/little training. First: safest course of action for a lot of things is to stay in place. Here is a simple loadout for getting home if it’s 20 miles away: One Nalgene Bottle (everything in this kit goes inside the bottle when stored) -space blanket -Swiss Army knife -Cell phone charger pack -Ultra light rain jacket -Electrolytes -Antidiarrheal/ibuprofen (as long as you keep the water inside you you can probably make it home) -Sunscreen -Chapstick -2,000 calories -cheap sunglasses -headlamp -TP -aquamira tablets (chloranamine) -Collapsible pack (mystery ranch has a 19L) -compass (maybe) -if it’s winter time, obviously this list changes, you can fit one of those REI brand puffy jackets into pretty small spaces. Costco and farm supply stores have great gloves for $6 a set. That’s all you need to get home and walk 20 miles. Water is the most important thing. Water over a gun. Most people who serve in combat don’t actually shoot their weapon, every single one of them drinks water and goes to the bathroom. I’m all for prepping and being prepared - I know that I’m just some guy on the Internet but I have a lot of experience walking in and out of austere environments. On the tier list of things that you need, a firearm is pretty low - but probably still an essential item, if you know how to use it. If you’re looking for good shoes, I really like Hoka and Altras and for boots La Sportiva. You do not need three pocket knives and a Glock 19 with six mags and a plate carrier to get home when you live in rural Virginia or wherever. If you can carry in your state, cool, then put a Glock +2 mags in a fanny pack. Hot take: Your cell phone has a compass that will work even without service, it also has a flashlight, those little battery banks are pretty valuable and while I do like analog - if you’re truly reducing weight, then use the device that you use every single day that works without fail for hundreds of days in a row. Your cell phone is durable, it’s probably the item that you use the most and drop and it gets wet and it still works every single day. I wouldn’t take my personal cell phone into a war, but we’re just talking about getting home. submitted by /u/FTWkansas to r/prepping [link] [comments]

Customizable TPU "boot" for protecting metal water bottles from dents
I designed a simple TPU boot to keep my new owala water bottles dent free (and quieter when I set it down). After doing this, I thought why not make it a fully parametric model that can be customized for any size bottle. It seemed like a good use case so people don't have to hunt around for a design made for their specific bottle. I remembered that Makerworld added support for Fusion 360 to create Customizable models not to long ago so decided to give it a try. I have to say it’s pretty slick. I decided to support changing both the diameter and height (in case people want a taller sleeve version). I do wish there was more ability to define print settings for the 3mf file and use Bambu Handy but perhaps that will be added in the future if the feature takes off. I’m curious to hear other people’s experience with Customizable models on Makerworld. Any tips or suggestions for someone just starting to explore it? Double walled metal water bottle vs nalgene for winter camping?
Currently prepping for my first winter camping experience. Will be dealing with below freezing temps on snow. I saw a couple youtubers advise putting hot water bottles in your boots so you wake up to dry, warm boots and usable water in the morning. Both curiously mentioned that it "won't work with double walled metal water bottles" and advise using nalgenes, but don't elaborate on why. This doesn't make sense to me as it should serve the same function. I really don't like the idea of leeching microplastic into my bottle with boiled water and so prefer metal. I don't mind the extra carry weight. Just did an experiment and my metal water bottle seems to heat the surrounding area fine. Thoughts? submitted by /u/Flatso to r/camping [link] [comments]

Designed a shark boot for water bottles — would love your thoughts! 🦈
Hey shark lovers! My friend and I have been working on a little side project, and we just finished making a shark-shaped silicone water bottle boot (we call it Shark Bait!). The current version fits the Owala 40oz FreeSip and the 32/40oz Hydroflasks! This is our first product as entrepreneurs, and we’re trying to get some feedback from people who actually love sharks as much as we do. We’d love to hear your thoughts - do you have any ideas for different sizes, colors, or even other ocean creatures that would make this even cooler?? If you want to check it out or support a tiny business starting from zero, here’s the link: https://silisuit.com Thanks so much for taking a look! 🦈💙 submitted by /u/BigPittie7 to r/sharks [link] [comments]

An average man has 18 months to travel halfway around the world in a world with no people; can he do it?
The man starts out in Denver, Colorado and needs to make it to a small town in southeast Kazakhstan within 18 months. This is a world where humans were wiped out 50 years ago in an apocalyptic pandemic. A lot of infrastructure and other things got destroyed in the social unrest that happened during this but it all happened pretty quickly and no serious damage was done to the environment (no nuclear war or anything). Whatever pathogen killed everyone is no longer present. The man is from our timeline and he knows that if he completes this challenge successfully, things will reset and he'll come back to now, but if he fails, he's stuck there, so he's very motivated. The man is a 30 year old American in above average physical shape but is no athlete. He works as an accountant and has minimal survivalist knowledge beyond anything he's picked up randomly from media. At the start of his journey he is given the following: 1) A set of clothing he'll be wearing that is appropriate for Denver's weather in the winter (including boots). 2) A large, high quality backpack. 3) A water bottle (empty). 4) A magic "compass" that always points in the direction of the destination in Kazakhstan. Can he do it? If you think he can't make it above, consider these bonus rounds: R2: He gets a month of training time with survival experts prior to starting. R3: He gets a month of training time with survival experts and a magic tablet that never runs out of batteries with a full version of google maps on it. R4: Same as the original scenario but it's only 5 years after everyone died instead of 50. submitted by /u/foxwilliam to r/whowouldwin [link] [comments]

I admire millennials so much it's borderline idolatry.
So look, I was a teen in the late 2010s and early 2020s. I was literally 14 when COVID hit. And I’ve always been jealous of teens from the early 2000s. I genuinely wish I grew up in that era—it just seems iconic. The aesthetic, the freedom, the stuff y’all did? It hits different. I follow people who talk about sneaking liquor into water bottles, which I’ve unfortunately experienced (thinking it was water—it wasn’t). But it’s not even about that moment. It’s the whole teenage experience back then. It felt real, wild, and alive. And yeah, I’ve bawled my eyes out feeling like I missed out on something meaningful—a time where life felt electric. Don’t get me wrong…I loved being a little kid in the early 2000s. That era is nostalgic for me too. But it’s a different experience. Can someone please just build a simulation where I can live it again? Or at least live it as a teen? I want that experience so bad. Since the 2020s hit, everything’s felt off. We’re five years deep and I still don’t feel like I’m living, just surviving. Sure, everyone had issues back then too, but that time itself had soul. Getting in trouble for dumb stuff, living without algorithms deciding your life—it was chaotic magic. I missed all that. I wish I had it. And the fashion? I’m talking actual 2000s fashion. Not watered-down Y2K aesthetics. I mean thongs peeking out, fur boots, parachute pants, those scalp-attacking headbands. A full cultural reset. Except jelly shoes. had those as a kid. Hated them. Arizona sun and melted plastic? Absolutely not. Also, it’s the music I have a whole playlist of early 2000s and late 90s hits because yes. submitted by /u/embrace_death420 to r/Millennials [link] [comments]

My Drinking Starts Before I Start Drinking
My drinking starts way before I start drinking, and it's exhausting. Yesterday - classic example of this. Wake up at 5am for work, grateful I don't have a headache because I've already called out twice this week from staying up too late drinking. Lay there. Assess the damage in the dark. Goddamnit, I unblocked my ex. But I didn't contact him - that's good. But I did send that person that heartfelt thing I've kept to myself. Fuck. I start stopping today. Gotta get up - maybe I'll use what's left of this bottle of water next to my bed to fill up the empty ice tray. It's 5:10am and I've started drinking. The second the idea about the ice tray slides in - while I'm still filled with regret, I've started drinking. I don't use ice unless it's with booze. Alcohol hasn't touched my lips, but I started with that ice tray. I go to work. My eyes twitch and I hate that none of my clothes don't fit anymore. My skin looks blotchy in the mirror under the fluorescent lights of the elevator. I wonder if I finished that bottle last night and what time the new liquor store on the way home from work closes. I'm walking into work, and I've started drinking. Home. Didn't stop at the liquor store because I'm not doing this anymore, goddamnit. I put my comfy clothes on, but leave my bra on - I'm not wearing that thing in my own house. I've started drinking, because I wouldn't even go to the liquor store braless. I cook dinner, watch TV, don't read that book I've been trying to finish for months now. My bra is still on. My brain is keeping track of the time. The store closes in 40 minutes. In 30 minutes. Where'd I put my boots? Don't do this. You don't wan't to do this. I put my boots on. I make small talk with the guy at the store as I pay. I get home. I take off my bra. I get the ice out of the freezer. And I start drinking. EDIT: goodness - I wrote this at 5am before going to work, just checked it on my coffee break and saw all of your comments. Thank you all so much, it made my eyeballs all prickly. I appreciate you. EDIT. 2: Whelp I left work and opened this up and.. jinkies. I’m both pleased and very sad that so many of you found something worthwhile in the familiarity of this experience. It’s nice to not scream into the void alone, but I’d still rather so many didn’t hear their own struggle echo’ing back. Many of you commented on the writing style and suggested I keep writing. Honestly it’s another thing I used to be good at that fell by the wayside. Maybe I’ll start trying to pick it back up again. Fill the hole with something productive. And for today at least, I will endeavour to take the bra off and leave it off. Thanks all. submitted by /u/neicul to r/stopdrinking [link] [comments]

Carrying water bottle while skiing?
Total beginner skier here. I bought myself a helmet, gloves, base layers, fleece, jacket, goggles and snow pants. I’ll be renting the skis and ski boots in Park city. I just thought about water-I’m assuming when you’re skiing for about 4 to 5 hours, you’re going to get thirsty. Do you guys normally carry a backpack or some sort of water bottle slung across your chest? submitted by /u/Succulent_Rain to r/skiing [link] [comments]

AITA for telling my friends dad my mom returned everything he got me for store credit for herself
So last year my mom married Mark and we moved to a new state. We have a 3 bedroom house. My mom and mark have one room, Marks daughter Lily (10) has her own room and I (13f) share with my brothers (16 18 and 22). Mark doesn't want my mom to work but he also doesn't give her money for us because thats our dads job so I was kinda on my own to get anything I needed. A guy at my school noticed I don't have a lunch most of the time so he started bringing extra food for me then I started going to his house after school. They've been really nice to me. They take me out with them and they got me pair of shoes because mine were too small. They went all out for me for Christmas. I got 2 pairs of boots and another 2 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of jeans, 4 leggings, like 20 shirts, 2 jackets, a raincoat, rain boots, umbrella, new backpack and water bottle and even hair stuff and some makeup. They also got me glasses but that wasn't really a Christmas present. My mom took everything back for store credit and she used it to get herself stuff. My friends dad picked me up the day after Christmas to take me to camp (he signed me and my friend up for cooking camp during winter break) and I told him what happened. He called cps and they came to camp to talk to me a couple days later then they came to the house and now I'm staying with my friend and his dad. He reordered everything he got me plus he had me go into target and some other stores to get a couple things until everything gets here but my mom is really mad that I told him and she's saying I got her in a lot of trouble so I wanted to know if I was wrong for telling him that she returned everything. submitted by /u/aitanotsharing to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITAH for telling my wife she can’t buy bottled water?
I am NOT the Original Poster. That is u/assholeasks. They posted in r/AITAH and r/TrueOffMyChest Mood Spoiler: frustrating, but a bit of hope First Post: August 23, 2023 Title: AITAH for telling my wife she can’t buy bottled water? I don't know if my pride/ego is bruised, if I'm misdirecting my frustrations, or if I'm just pathetic so I'm turning to the opinions of random internet strangers. Today my wife did the biweekly grocery store run. She likes going alone and before she left I offered to make her a jug of ice water because it’s hot and I knew she was going to get thirsty. Her “jug” is a $50 Stanley cup. Even though it was bought months ago it was out of our budget but she begged for it and swore she would use it all the time. About 45 minutes later she got back and had two huge bottles of Evian water. We are on a very strict budget. We do not get food stamps because I make “too much”. She had $35 to get what we needed and I know Evian is expensive. I asked her why she bought water when I offered to make her water before she left. I guess you can compare it to “We have McDonalds at home”. She tells me they were on sale 2 for $7 and she just wanted it. That is not a freaking sale. I immediately got frustrated because we don’t have money for “wants”. Hell we don’t have money for “needs”! That $7 could have bought some protein to add to our meals. I already skip as many meals as I can get away with so there is enough for her and the kids. We have been surviving on beans, rice, spam, eggs, and frozen veggies. I would be a slut for some chicken right now. That $7 could have bought a few small toys for our kids' birthday next week. Two of them have birthdays and I had to explain to them we can’t celebrate this year because I had to replace our a/c system. And before someone says I shouldn’t have kids if I’m poor, it’s too late to abort them. My work boots are falling apart, I walk to work every single day and carpool back home to save on gas and we don’t have valid car insurance because I had to choose between that or electricity. I hate that I’m a man who gets pissed off over $7 water. I'm embarrassed. I’m tired. I’m hungry. I don’t see how anything is going to get better but my wife needed her Evian. I told her she needs to take her cup of water every time she leaves the house or sell that stupid cup and I instantly got sick to my stomach at how controlling and petty that is. I’m the asshole, right? Just to add we have filtered water at home which is what I meant when I said I'd make her a water before she left. Relevant Comments: Biggest question is why she doesn't realize the effect this has on the family: "I'm so frustrated because I was just pouring my heart out to my kids who have a birthday coming up. Explaining that we needed a/c more and that I would make it up to them. "If I had extra $ I'd get you guys something". And then here comes my wife with expensive water and now they think it's a load of crap. I hate this." Have you actually laid out a budget and shown how this impacts it? "My next three paychecks are already budgeted. The $7 she used came out of the $35 grocery money." Does your wife work? "She stays home with the kids because daycare would cost too much." There is no consensus bot on AITAH, but the top comments were NTA Second Post: September 7, 2023 (2 weeks later) Title: I don’t know who I married I know the title might sound dramatic and I know my family is my responsibility but some tips or advice is appreciated. Before someone says I shouldn’t have kids if I’m poor, it’s too late to abort them. I posted last week about how my wife did the biweekly grocery store run and had $35 to get what we needed and she spent $7 of it on Evian waters. Before she left I offered to make her a jug of ice water because it’s hot and I knew she was going to get thirsty. Her “jug” is a $50 Stanley cup. Even though it was bought months ago it was out of our budget but she begged for it and swore she would use it all the time. We do not get food stamps because I make “too much”. I work full time and pick up as much overtime as I can while my wife stays at home with our kids. I do everything I can to stay afloat. She tells me they were on sale and she just wanted it. That is not a freaking sale. I immediately got frustrated because we don’t have money for needs let alone wants. She is embarrassed by going to the food pantries so I try to do it on my lunch breaks or on my one day off. We have a tight budget, I walk to work to save on gas, I pick up overtime when it’s available, and I’m at the point where there aren't enough hours in the day for just me to make enough money to get us to break even. I told her she needed to find some part time work. She has been a stay at home mom because daycare is expensive but now all but one of our kids are in school. Today she told me she would need a new interview outfit and to get her haircut. I said we don’t have money for that, our fridge completely died a few days ago. She then started talking about all the things she would do buying/doing for herself once she starts working. I told her the money would be going towards getting caught up on bills, getting the kids what they need, and to maybe start saving a few bucks. She said it would be HER money which caught me off guard because my paycheck isn’t considered MINE nor have I ever insinuated that it is. Our kids only got one pair of new school shoes this year and no clothes, it bothered me more than it did them. My oldest has a field trip next week that she won’t be able to go to because we don’t have the $50. My wife chose bougie water over a few gifts from the dollar tree for our kids. When I asked why she doesn’t care that our kids are going without her response is “It’s only one bday they are missing”, “field trips aren’t that big of a deal”, “at least they have something to wear to school”. Very nonchalant “it is what it is” attitude. She had a rough childhood where she never got celebrated, got gifts, never had new school clothes, ect so it’s not a big deal to her. I’ve never seen this side of her and I don’t like it. We have never been so poor so is this just her survival mode method? TL:DR; I was off work without pay from surgery 6 months ago and everything snowballed from there. My kids are seeing that she doesn’t care and it’s upsetting them, and me. Relevant Comment: You married a horrible person: "It's only been the past few months that this "side" of her is showing. I'm just confused if it's just the stress or what but she can't just shut down and put everything on me." Get a water filter: "We have filtered water in the fridge" Third Post: September 21, 2023 (2 weeks from last post) I know our vows are for richer or poorer but hear me out. Almost a month ago I posted about how my wife did the biweekly grocery store run. About 45 minutes later she got back and had two huge bottles of Evian water. We are on a very strict budget. We do not get food stamps because I make “too much”. She had $35 (this was just a “filler” trip) to get what we needed and I know Evian is expensive. Very nonchalant “it is what it is” attitude. She had a rough childhood where she never got celebrated, got gifts, never had new school clothes, ect so it’s not a big deal to her. But it is to them. I walk to work to save on gas, I pick up overtime when it’s available, and I’m at the point where there aren't enough hours in the day for just me to make enough money to get us to break even. I told her she needed to find some part time work. She told me she would need a new interview outfit and to get her haircut. I said we don’t have money for that. She said it would be HER money which caught me off guard because my paycheck isn’t considered MINE nor have I ever insinuated that it is. Daycare has been the reason why she is a SAHM, it was too expensive. I’ve spent the last week and a half calling around to find daycare since my other kids are back in school and I finally found an opening. Today I told her that our kid can start next week and that she should have no trouble getting a job by then. Hell, even a serving job would work. All of a sudden I’m controlling and she says she doesn’t work well under pressure. I love my wife but I love my kids more. She is barely taking care of the kids and at this point she is just another mouth I can’t feed. Am I wrong if I kick her out or leave? For the love of god reddit, I've posted this in other subs. If I had asked this question without explaining what has been going on it would be pointless. I'd have a bunch of comments asking "why are you thinking about divorce?" Relevant Comment: In response to someone who says they both suck because they shouldn't have had kids if they can't afford them: "I wasn't poor when we had our kids and it's too late to abort them but thank you." Fourth Post: September 30, 2023 (9 days later) (This post is marked as an update to the last one) I have had a lot of people ask for an update on my first post so here it is. I just want to clear a few things up first. We were not poor when we got married and we weren’t poor when any of my four kids were born. Things didn’t go down hill financially until after covid, a hospitalization, and our central a/c went out. Plus the cost of living and inflation, how many of you are one disaster away from crumbling? I’m making the most money I’ve ever made yet I’m struggling. To those who said I need a better job, I have the best one I qualify for. There are only 24 hours in a day, I can not get a second job unless I want to give up sleeping. One of my kids already asked me if I still live with them because I’m gone by the time they wake up and are asleep when I get home. We need more income and my wife needs to work because we have no money for extras and yes that includes birthdays and emergencies. I can not “step up and be a better man” when there are no more steps. If you don’t understand that then scroll on. I also want to say I am not divorcing her over spending $7. It wasn’t about the money, it was the fact that she chose her needs over our childrens and I’d hope any parent in that position would second guess being with their partner. My kids come first. Now I sat her down and laid out our budget, explained how just me working isn’t going to cut it because “times are tough” and are only getting tougher. We don’t get food stamps. We don’t get government help. I told her if she wants to keep eating with a roof over her head but NOT work then she needs to leave and apply for benefits as a single mother. Our fridge is empty, we have four mouths to feed and she won’t even go to a food pantry. She broke down crying saying food pantries make her feel like she is a kid again in foster care begging for scraps. She said she didn’t stress about the field trips or birthdays because there was nothing she could do and it would be a learning moment for them. She said she wants to start working but doesn’t have anything that fits her anymore because she hasn’t worked in over 9 years. She has no self confidence because of the weight she has gained. She said her anxiety is holding her back. I sympathize with her but also we can’t wait around until we get extra money before she starts working. Every penny of my checks are spoken for before it even hits my account. We can’t wait. She said she will try to look for jobs that she can do from home that don’t require her to “look pretty”. She has ads on craigslist to clean houses/cars which would provide immediate income even if it’s $50-$100. I’m embarrassed that that amount of money would be life changing. I also put up ads for mechanical work I can do on my day off. I do love my wife but she has to actively want the best for our kids and help provide for them. As for daycare I found a private sitter for my youngest who is working with me on payment and will continue to until I am on my feet. It's a coworkers wife. This will open up my wife's entire day to look for employment and start working. More info on the sitter: "I found a private sitter for my youngest who is working with me on payment. I’m the boot. Retired after more than 20 years and for some insane reason thought this water bottle was cool. Paid way too much. Cheap plastic. And now I may be the oldest “boot” on the planet.

Filling water bottles makes me an employee apparently...
This interesting encounter happened about 2 months ago and I've been meaning to share but I kept forgetting so here it is (TL;DR at the end) Background: I volunteer at a conference facility when they have large conferences and need extra hands, its owned by family of mine so I don't mind running a few errands and helping out where I can. For most of my errand running I use my mom's car and leave her with mine; we have the exact same car but hers is a station wagon, mine is a sedan and that extra boot space in the station wagon is perfect for mass shopping. Story: For this particular encounter I was sent to buy 500 water bottles among other things for a conference that weekend. When I go to the store, I go to the manager to place the order and pay, due to the large amount of bottles that I needed, he could not get them from the shelves but rather he would get them filled. He said it would take about 45 minutes as he only had one of the workers who normally works at the water station instead of the normal 3 workers. I decided to go and do some other shopping in the mall. 45 Minutes later I return and find that only 200 bottles had been filled so I grab a nearby crate, sit down and help the guy that was filling the bottles. A little while later we finish and take the boxes of bottles to the car, about halfway through the loading the guy I was with was called back into the store so he left me with the trolley of water to finish up. As I finish and close the boot, I feel a tap on my shoulder, I turn round and see an old lady (OL) OL: "Show me where your leeks are" Me: "Uhm excuse me?" OL: "Don't be stupid, boy. Just show me where the damn leeks are." Me: "Oh no sorry, I don't work at [store name]" OL: "DO NOT LIE TO ME BOY! I saw you in the store filling those bottles and now loading them in this customer's car! You're even wearing part of the uniform!" (I was wearing tan sweatpants and a black New York hoodie. Store uniform is black slacks and a black sweater with the logo on the front and back.) Me: "Oh no I am the customer and this is my car." OL: "I'm going to report you to your manager for lying to me!" Me: "But I'm-" OL grabs the car keys from my hand and starts marching to the store She takes about 3 steps while my jaw dropped. I shout "Can you at least lock the fucking car?!" , She spins round and actually presses the lock button. After making sure the car was actually locked I walk in after her to try retrieve my keys. I find her talking to the chilled manager (CM) who I know from previous large shopping trips. OL waving the keys: "This employee of yours is refusing to help me and is claiming this car is his! You should fire him and call the police because I'm sure he's trying to steal it!" CM looks at me, looks at the keys in OL's hands and after a moment says "I will be calling the cops but only because you have stolen his car keys, effectively stealing his car." OL: "There's no way this BOY owns a MER-zay-deez-BENZ (I promise that's how she said it) CM: "Actually ma'am, I've helped him put things in that car, it is indeed his, should I still get the police here?" (He's only ever seen my car not my mom's but the keys are identical) OL drops the keys, turns round and does her best impression of a scuttling crab inspired by Usain Bolt CM apologizes for the fiasco and offers a chocolate bar as an apology, I happily accept the chocolate bar and walk out of the store and see OL standing outside the store talking to someone about how she has been "DISRESPECTED". TL:DR: Large amount of water bottles triggers confusion and rage in geriatric woman. Edit: Guys I'm not gonna drop kick, trip or throw hands at a 70+ year old woman lol, that'll put me in jail or very long court proceedings at best. I know she took my car keys but damn I swear me reacting like that would be satisfying but so bad for me in the long run Edit 2: I realised I would not be able to go to the store today to get a picture of the bottling area but i did find the Company that does the bottling in store. submitted by /u/chaosxcviii to r/IDontWorkHereLady [link] [comments]
