I recently learned about water-based polish and have been so happy to have the freedom to paint my nails again! I have MCAS and am extremely sensitive to some VOCs. I'm starting with water-based and may eventually try to work my way up to 10-free, etc. and see what I tolerate. A couple years ago, I had to sit at a different location at work for weeks after someone used a product containing toluene to polish a desk inside a closed office nearby 🤦‍♀️ I recently found out that quick dry polish and top coat contain toluene, and I immediately realized why nail polish started making me sick a few years ago! The problem is, I'm a perfectionist, and I'm not very good at painting. Supposedly, acetone won't remove this polish. So, what should I use on my cleanup brush? 😆 I tried water, but I have to be SO quick! By the time I get one nail painted and come back with the cleanup brush, it's already a bit difficult. Kapa Nui polish remover on the brush didn't work because you need a lot of pressure and friction. I'm trying not to develop a latex allergy, so the liquid latex method is unfortunately also out. I had gorgeous strong natural nails most of my life and I never polished them. Last year I became obsessed with Mooncat (just bought a haul in today’s sale) as well as ILNP and other brands. I’ve tried acetone remover, non-acetone remover, drugstore polishes as well as the nicer brands, and no matter what I do my nails crack and split and break right at the quick ever since I started painting them. I use a rubber base coat. What am I doing wrong? When I google how to remove it, I get "soak your nails in pure acetone for 20 minutes and then scrape it off" I did that and it barely softened it up. It took me an hour and a half to pry the polish off all 10 fingers. And after I did, my nails were pitted and destroyed. The nail salon industry is a 7 to 14 billion dollar a year industry. Chemical engineers exists. How can such a widely used product have no readily available solvent for removing it? I just did my Easter nails and it took me 3 hours! Overrrrr it. Half of that was removal! I have this soaker with nubs in the bottom. it comes apart and you add hot water, then, the interest and just enough acetone to submerge your nails. I know soaking in acetone is a bad BUT I am hoping to get 3-4 weeks out of a set. I tried fast foils and even with a lot of filing first, there was nothing fast about them. I wanted to share this soaking thing I got in case others ate frustrated with the process of removal. EDIT: Thanks for everyone who's sharing tips! I'm learning a lot of alternatives from yall. Someone said this might be rage bait but I promise it's not. Haven't seen anyone else do something like this, so I wanted to share the fastest way I've found to remove nail polish. I keep old acetone in a small plastic container (HDPE so it doesn't melt) and use an old wooden toothbrush with nylon bristles to scrub nail polish off. Each finger takes about 20-30 seconds to clean, and I can finish both hands in 3-5 minutes. In this video, the acetone had already been used for 3 previous manicures, and I typically change it out every 4-5 manicures because I'd rather spend money on new polish than acetone. Works great for removing glitter. My week-old manicure: (3) layers Londontown Kur Fortifying Ridge Filler (3) layers some custom polish of eyeshadow mixed with Seche Clear (1) layer Seche Vite (1) layer Cirque Colors Haze Glaze Matte Top Coat Other tips: I work under the kitchen fume hood to keep the smell down. I keep 2 separate containers of acetone. One is for "clean-up" of edges with a make-up brush. The other one is for "removing/scrubbing." When the "scrubbing" acetone gets too saturated, I dump it out, and the "clean-up" bottle becomes the "scrubbing" bottle. And the empty bottle gets refilled with fresh acetone. How are y’all removing your polish without causing a huge amount of waste in terms of products? If at all possible. Even with using acetone to cut through all the layers of polish more efficiently, the amount of cotton swabs and rounds I go through is incredibly wasteful. Especially so because as I’m learning about all the care and different kinds of polishes/combos to try, my compulsiveness/ADHD will not let an attempt stay on my nails for more than a day or two. Sometimes not even a day if I really gooned up a magnetic attempt or something. I’m also currently unemployed so ya girl got TIME to be a jagaloon over here. I can’t edit my OG post and my comments keep getting buried. That post has over 2m views right now and people keep pouring in. I can’t reply to everyone. I just wanted to say thank you everyone who tried to help me and address some things that frequently came up. No I didn’t steal the damn switch everyone keeps asking for a story despite the fact that I commented it in a reply and its one of the most upvoted comments on that post. It’s easy to find, but I’ll touch on it here. I was super gluing a broken pair of sunglasses and I went to the bathroom real quick. My 5 year old, at lightning speed, decided to glue a popsicle wrapper to the thing. I was gone for less than 60 seconds. He is okay! No glue on his skin. He’s been pasting a lot of stuff at school lately so took this golden opportunity to pretty up my switch. The most important reason I’m making this post, DO NOT USE ACETONE ON PLASTIC!!!! So many people recommend acetone/nail polish remover. Guys, that MELTS this type of plastic which is ABS plastic. Don’t do it! Here’s what I tried that didn’t work. Warm water, rubbing alcohol, goo gone, olive oil, white vinegar, plastic scraper. I tried letting things sit and I tried massaging them into the glue. Made 0 difference. Finally, my issue has been solved by contacting Nintendo. I’m sending them the switch today, they’re going to replace the shell for free apparently. I’m kind of worried they’re going to find a reason not to as they originally quoted me nearly $200 but as of right now, they said they will repair it for free. Thanks everyone again for helping me! I didn’t expect my post to get as big as it did lol. Whenever I wear nail polish for 2-3 weeks in a row (I strip and re-apply about every 7 days), the tips of some of my nails start to peel. Is there something I can do to prevent this? When I start happening I generally stop wearing polish for a few weeks until the damaged parts of the nails grow out and I can cut them off. I typically use OPI Nail Envy as a base coat (though this happened with other base coats), ILNP or Essie polish, and the Sally Hansen red bottle quick dry top coat (though it's happened with other top coats). I've tried multiple nail polish removers too, from store brand to 100% acetone. I also use Bliss Kiss on my cuticles and nails. I'd appreciate any advice you all have! I have never wanted to make a post until now. I am still a very confused about what happened. I opened the laundry room door which is a very small room, big enough for a shelf on one side and a washer and dryer on the other and where you walk through to get to the garage. My wife is skeptical and about done with hearing my UFO theories and findings. I did however tell her about the UFO video over the reservoir in NJ and how the weird smell has been reported, etc. My wife tonight washed a blanket, when it was done the second I opened the door, I was hit in the face with a gust of smell of nail polish remover. I was taken back for a second and then walked into the room. I immediately asked my wife, “what is making it smell like nail polish remover in here?” completely forgetting about telling her those stories. I got my acrylic nails done yesterday. My tech uses “gel” nail polish in different colors, and also uses a thick clear gel as a glue for rhinestones and charms. The paint is applied, and after you stick your hand under a UV lamp for 45-60 seconds, it’s hard as a rock and completely dry. What is happening during that 1 minute “curing” process? Why does a higher UV wattage (160+) work faster? Worked at a retail store for a while. Had to help a couple of gems, including a lady that didn't know what acetone was and used basically nail polish remover to remove her eye makeup and then asked me if we had something that was both a face wash AND a dry shampoo, but this next lady really takes the cake in my retail experience. One thing to remember for the story: The store I worked at let us wear crop tops to work, so I was in a crop top and jeans that day. So this lady was like 70s-looking, frail and tiny, looked like an artsy grandma, and she wanted to know if we had any overalls. Well, she was in luck because overalls were like 75% of what we had that season. She says she wants a black pair, so I show her what we have, and she says she'd like to try it in both a medium and a large, so I pull one of each. This lady ends up going through the whole store making me grab a medium and large in every single jumpsuit and overall style we have in the store, and has me carry everything in my arms and follow her around the whole time like a personal shopper. At the store I worked at, I was responsible for helping everyone on the floor, not just one customer at a time, so thank god no one really asked for my help. One mom came up and was about to ask me for something before she saw the 20 overalls I had in my arms and said, "Oh, it's okay, honey, I'll just find it myself." Bless that woman. Lady now wants t-shirts to go with her overalls. Okay. I show her our t-shirts. "These are too baggy," she says. "I want a tight t-shirt." I explain that we didn't carry any tight t-shirts this season, only tight tanks and crop tops, and all our t-shirts were pretty baggy, but I found a style that was sort of fitted and she flips through the rack before saying, "Okay, get these two for me." Ma'am. Ma'am. You can reach the rack. I saw you flip through the rack. The rack is shorter than you are. I get that you're elderly, but I'm carrying like 20 overalls. And that's just two t-shirts. But whatever. I grab her t-shirts. I take all her stuff up to the dressing rooms, where she has me give her my opinion for every single overall she tries on. There's a line growing in front of the rooms now, and thank god every other customer was a really-understanding college kid who totally got why I was slow to help them. I also find the one tight t-shirt in the whole store in the sale section for her. She pretends to get mad at me for not having brought them to her earlier. She thinks it's funny when I panic for a second. She also thinks it's okay to do this: Lady: "Do you have any dark blue overalls?" Me: "Yes." L: "Well why didn't you get them for me?" M: "...you said you didn't want them, you said the blue was too dark." L: "Well now I want them." So I radio to have a medium and a large in the dark blue overalls sent upstairs. An hour later, she finally decides on the pairs she wants, but wants to see what her new outfit looks like with a bandanna in her hair. She's having some trouble holding her arms up long enough to tie it properly, so I offer to do it for her. While I'm doing this, the lady PATS MY WAIST. MY BARE SKIN. This lady just! Pats!!! The exposed!! Part!! Of my waist!!! My soul left my body for a hot second, but whatever. I bring all her stuff down. She takes one look at the long line and the one cashier girl and says, "Ohhhh, my back hurts so much from standing, and this line is so long, could you just let me go first?" I tell her no, ma'am, I cannot in fact let you cut in front of ten other people, but if you'd like, I can hold your stuff behind the register until the line dies down and we can find you some place to sit in the meantime. I offer to take her upstairs in our elevator so that she can sit on one of the really soft couches or armchairs we have on display. She refuses to go upstairs. "I'm not walking up those stairs," she says. I repeat that we have an elevator that I am more than happy to take her on. She still refuses and insists on staying downstairs. I say that she is welcome to do that, but the only seating we have downstairs is the shoe benches and those are just hard plywood, which wouldn't do her back any favors, and all the soft seating is upstairs in our furniture section. "Could you just bring down an armchair for me?" .................................................no. The couple that was next in line overheard the whole thing and very very kindly let her cut in front of them, so I just dumped all her stuff at the register and booked it.
