Acrylic Nails Short

I dont go on this subreddit often but I just wanted to do a short vent. There's a female employee at a fast food place i go to often who is overly friendly and repeats her sentences (i think she is on the autism/neurodivergent spectrum) and she always compliments my acrylic nails repeatedly and asks me questions about acrylic nails.. but she doesn't know that the only reason I get acrylic nails is to stop myself from picking at my nails. She just goes on and on about my nails and makes me feel like im some fashionista. and everyone around us can hear what she is saying and it's embarrassing. I dont wear makeup or jewelry and i dress very casually... i dont like attention. I'd had enough of this employee so i gave it another shot at not having the acrylic nails for a few weeks and trying to have natural nails. And of course it didn't work (I can't stop peeling/ripping my nails). Im going to have to go back to acrylic nails. I really don't see how I will ever beat this habit. I've been getting hard gel/acrylics consistently for the better part of a year, with breaks in between. About a month ago I slammed my thumb between a door and didn't think much of it until the gel and color my thumb started to peel, and then when we removed everything we noticed that the top part of my nail had separated. My nail tech told me to wait to grow it out, but it's now just fully come off, I tried to cut away and file away any snags so that I don't hurt myself more but now it's led to this ugly ugly thumb. I have a wedding to attend this weekend, and I wanted to wear press ons with sticky tabs for it, but I don't know what to do about this thumb 😭 this is the only one with this kind of damage, the others are just very short as I'm a nail biter. I've been getting acrylics for many years now as a chronic nail biter, but a couple of weeks ago a natural part of my nail lifted which we then removed the set and my nail tech told me to wait for it to grow out. Now it's reached the free edge and just completely broke off, leaving me with almost no nail on the side and very very short. I have a wedding to attend to this weekend and was thinking of putting on press ons with glue tabs but I am not sure what to do about this nail now 😭 any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hey everyone, I need some serious advice from nail techs or anyone who knows about nail health. I just got a full set of acrylics yesterday at a local salon. Long story short, the first set was an absolute disaster, so they had to do a full soak-off and redo it. I walked out with these almond pearl chrome nails. They don't actually hurt or feel uncomfortable, but looking at them closely is genuinely scaring me and I'm worried about the safety of my natural nails. 1. The Side Profile: The tips are hooking heavily downward like cat claws. I’m worried this means they were applied at a bad angle and are putting weird structural pressure on my nail beds. 2. Underneath the Nails: There are massive, thick, sharp chunks of unfiled acrylic completely exposed underneath my nails. I am terrified that water, dirt, and bacteria are going to get trapped in those raw, jagged pockets and cause a bacterial infection. Is this considered a nail emergency? Are my natural nails going to be okay under this, or do I need to go to a completely different salon to get these soaked off immediately today? Also, do you think a full refund is warranted for a set left in this condition? I really don't want to end up with a medical issue over a $70 botched job. I currently have gel nails and would like to start shadowing soon. My natural nails are extremely short and just slightly longer than the nail of the average person with gel. Should I cut them short to my natural length before starting to shadow or get them removed altogether? Any feedback is appreciated. Hello! I've been living in Downtown since last year and I wanna get my nails painted (my natural extra short nails) in a simple way with just gel polish (no decor or extra stuff). All the places I had ask for have prices that I don't think are worth it for what I'm asking for (talking about $100-$170). So, if anyone could let me know of a place where I can get a more decent price and do a great job (hygine etc) I would be so thankful! I'm thinking of getting acrylics, only for stopping the picking. I don't have much experience with acrylics, but I feel it'd be possible to get short ones with tips being a little thicker than normally. I just feel that could help prevent picking more, if the tip was more stubby in the way that it'd be even harder to wedge into irregularities. So long story short my bf hurt his thumb nail and we are now at the point this week that the nail is going to fall off. As you can imagine it is not pretty, in fact I’ve only looked at it a few times because it makes me nauseous. My dad had a toe that always had a bad nail that would fall off at least once a year, and I hated it! I never looked when it fell off because my dad knew I could barely look at it still attached. I’m in the healthcare industry and child care, I see and touch a lot of gross stuff. My bf thinks with this background of ‘being used to it’ should make it easy to help if trim his nail so it feels better. I told him to phone a friend because I will not even look at it. I did once this morning the first time he brought it up, and told him no immediately. It makes me sick, I can’t do it. He’s upset and now instead of finding someone to help (his family is our neighbors directly. We share a yard), he trimming it himself and complaining about the struggle. Hes getting more upset because I won’t help with the nail. I’ll clean up any mess made in the process afterwards, but I’m not going in to see that nail. Edit: This got a lot of attention fast, so some more context. His nail isn’t in excruciating pain. It’s tender and hurts when it’s bumped. He says trimming some jagged parts will help. I have helped and would help in emergencies (I can handle blood just find) but this is a minor situation that I can’t stand to look at. His family surrounds us on 3/4 sides of our house. It’s a walk across the yard, and I know that two of them are home right now. Those with the healthcare aspect. Yes I work in health care. So does his family! They are first responders. Finally, I don’t have a reason for not liking injured nails. I used to get acrylics, and had a few break my actual nail. I would keep the nail wrapped until it was mostly healed because I hated the view. I’d ask my friend who is a nurse to help me keep it clean while the nails grew out. Edit 2: Sorry I should have clarified. I am high level EVS so I clean up after surgeries, procedures, etc. I see and touch gross stuff all the time, but I do not enjoy direct patient care! ​ As much as I love the appearance of having long nails, always found them really uncomfortable, I need to have them trimmed as short as humanly possible, I have tried a bunch of different thumb plectrums and thumb covers for playing kalimba, (My latest being these adjustable nail rings for DIY detachable acrylic nails lol... they kinda work? I guess?) But no matter which type of plectrum I use, it always seems to make harder to play, sound weird, or get caught on the tines. But yeah, which plectrums (if any) have you found the best? EDIT: Turns out (thanks to a commenter), my use of the term "acrylic nails" is a misunderstanding of the usage when I was little (I'm now 43). I always assumed it was just a synonym for "fake nails," not giving it any thought because I hate wearing false nails, anyway. Would still love to know how you save examples. OP: So, I don't wear acrylic nails, and won't. I'm hoping you all can tell me if it's even possible to buy only a single size of acrylic nails (and where). My searching is coming up empty. Might be my ignorance on the subject. I wish to practice on acrylics, and store my successes so I can later remember what I did. Kinda keeping a chronical of work in physical form (instead of only photos). I only wish for a single size (10mm or 11mm wide, extra short oval) because it's more consistent on the storage page. I also looked into those color swatch storage books that come with nails, but they don't come with enough extra for nail art purposes (messing up more than succeeding)--I'm sure it's perfect for their intended nail color swatch use. I've given this a lot of thought, but don't know if I'm limiting myself somehow with this plan. 😅 Any advise or other suggestions? I’m a guy (29) that’s always struggled with nail biting. I want my nails to look nice, and I’ve really been trying to stop lately and I had the wild idea that if I could get super short, natural looking acrylics put on that I keep for 2-3 weeks, that would keep me from doing it and be a long enough time to break the habit. Also as a guy who’s never gotten their nails done it honestly sounds fun, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little exited and looking forward to this experiment lol. My questions are: Is it possible to get super short acrylics done that look close enough to natural nails so that it doesn’t look out of place on a guy? What should I ask for? (As far as color/finish etc) Will they look too thick to look natural? Is this a terrible idea? Am I missing something? Any other recommendations? I’ve been playing for 6 years so I know very well how short your nails have to be to play, so I’ve only used nail polish or stickers before. I’m curious- any of us have long nails? Every person with eds I’ve met has had nails like mine. Short, wide, stubby. That made me curious if there’s anybody out there with long nails. I’ve gotten used to it, but I remember in my teens I was always wearing acrylics and that press ons never worked for me like they did for my friends (now I know why). Edit: I forgot to share more about my nails. My nails are thin, bendy, but also somehow EXTREMELY sharp. I used acrylics because I liked the shape, and could never grow them on my own. After a certain point my nails never point/taper- they just grow out as wide as the bed. Thanks for sharing more about your nails! Congratulations to my lovely nail technician who recently had her second baby. I took a few pictures to show how my old acrylics faired on the journey...in short they didn't really survive. A 3 month wait, and a 4 hour round trip to travel to see her today. She asked me why I didn't find anyone else to do the job in that time. I told her no one does as good of a job as she does. We had a wonderful catch up and then it came to choosing colours. I told her I was considering going back to French but I wasn't sure. I had a radom thought and decided to ask her what colour she never sees anyone choose. She said Dark Blue and told me she had bought a new Navy Blue. I was sold and said do it!
