@ashleyburgess1, Nah, & we cloth diaper, so we have literal 💩 going into ours 😂 We will use Affresh (washing machine cleaner) every month or so to clean it, but that's mostly because we have super hard water. I usually just leave the washer door open til the dryer is finished to allow it to fully dry & prevent mold or bacterial growth.

Hi! My roommate and I are at our wits end with our washing machine. We moved in 5 months ago and our washer REEKED. The machine was only a year old when we moved in. When we run it, the smell fills our apartment and it very strongly transfers to our clothes. Our building management has been very dismissive of the issue despite us both having mold allergies. We got them to replace our washer but they misleadingly swapped ours for a washer from (presumably) another unit that came with visible dried mold and rust inside the rubber gasket. Both washers have had this same distinct smell so this must be an issue with the model. We were told that per city rules, the building is not capable of running water hot enough for the sanitize function on the machine to work properly. We have asked for our washer to be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned but this was shot down. Every time the (same) maintenance guy comes he says he can’t smell anything. We have made a dent in the smell but nothing will get it to go away completely or stop it from transferring to our clothes. We have tried bleach, vinegar, Odoban, Affresh tablets, Glisten liquid cleaner, Sugelary home stain cleaner, and Active tablets. Our current routine is coating the rubber gasket in the Sugelary gel, spraying the drum with Odoban, and leaving the door open whenever it is not in use. Before we wash something, we run the machine with an Active tablet and wipe the extra gel with a towel. We run our wash with HE detergent and Odoban. We can only do one or two wash cycles before the smell builds up too much again. The smell also gets much worse if we run a hot or warm cycle, so we stick to cold. Larger than normal WM as we bought it when our son and small family were moving in with us as they shopped for a home. Too big for the wife and I but we can wash large items if ever necessary. GE. HE Turbo. Deep Fill machine. Machine is about 6 years old now. Wife noticed the drum is looking a little grimey and we were wondering how to best clean it? I'm tall enough I can wet a rag with a cleaning product and wipe most down but not sure if all the way to the bottom. Hi, I have a question regarding my top loader whirlpool washing machine. My machine is does not have a detergent tray or a fabric softener tray. I read through the entire manual, quick start guide and the cycle guides on the whirlpool website and it recommends putting the detergent at the bottom of the drum prior to putting the clothes in and also states that a downy ball is recommended for fabric softener. However, the machine has an option to select for fabric softener and the manual does not state what the machine does if I select that option. I typically use heavy duty mode with an extra rinse, deep fill and sometimes I will do a 30 minute pre soak if needed. I use a downy ball but I only use it for citric acid as I never use any fabric softener. Does anyone have any guesses as to what the fabric softener button would do if selected? I usually use Affresh but Tide was on sale so I picked it up. I poured it in the tub and used the Tub Clean setting. After it was done, there was a very overwhelming smell of pure soap coming out of the tub that gave me quite a headache. I tried one more TC (with no soap), didn't do anything. Did an empty Heavy Duty load with the hottest temp. and 3 extra rinses, nothing. So this morning I got some Affresh and used it. Nothing. I did another HD with hottest temp. and 3 rinses, still smells like I poured a hundred bars of soap in there. I'm thinking of trying vinegar but I heard it can be damaging to the washer. I've got a Whirlpool Model WFW5620HW3, located under a stacked dryer in a narrow closet – I can’t access anything other than the front of the machines. The machine works, just not very well. Other issues: It sometimes drains slowly. Cycle times can be inaccurate. Clothes don’t come out smelling fresh, unlike other washers I’m used to. I’ve even had to wash some shirts twice, which is a first for me. It’s my first time with a low-water washer though, so maybe normal? Occasionally, I hear water gurgling sounds from the washer closet, even if I haven’t done laundry recently. I’ve read the manual and follow the directed maintenance: Wipe out the door seal and leave the door open to air it out Keep loads a reasonable size (1/2 to 2/3 full max). Use warm water sometimes. For detergent, I use the Load n Go feature (and clean the dispenser when I refill it) Affresh washer cleaner with the Clean Washer cycle every ~30 loads. Clean the drain pump filter and drain residual water regularly. Filter: almost never has anything in it. The filter screen is too large to do much about pet hair though, so no surprise. Hello! I've been running affresh cycles every month with hot water. I just ran one for July, and there was a lot of brown gunk at the bottom of the machine amd on the sides. Some of it was flaky and smeared and broke apart when rubbing it. This has never happened before. Should I run another affresh cycle? I shined a flashlight around the machine and saw white clumpy gunk at the top and some black goofy stuff in a place I cant reach (some of the photos). I have contamination OCD, and its making me anxious to even look at because im scared its dangerous. I haven't found anything on my clothes or sheets at all though, and the machine itself smells fine. I do laundry a lot (2-3 times per week) and use warm water for my cycles and a small amount of detergent. My mom uses fabric softener or those laundry beads along with her detergent, and i saw some of those beads stuck in the crevices of the machine. Is it safe to wash stuff in the machine? Im scared of contamination. Theres also rust (?) On the inner lid and rim which is also pictured and im not sure if that's dangerous either. I’d like to stop buying Affresh but have a bunch of questions and looking to see if anyone has some info: Is there even a difference between all of their cleaners (Washer vs Dishwasher vs Disposal)? Can I make my own with sodium percarbonate, sodium bicarbonate and citric acid? If so, what’s the ratio and can I use it for the washing machine, dishwasher and garbage disposal (although I’m thinking the affresh disposal cleaner has a foaming agent)? If anyone is currently using their own combo, let me know. My main issue is that affresh is a little pricey for 3 tablets. It often seems like there has to be a more cost effective way to clean. I have run over 10 tub clean cycles, with either an affresh tablet or a tide washing machine cleaner pack. After every cycle I vacuum and wipe with clorox wipe + paper towels to get all the gunk out. Hey guys. Really bad smell when we do a washing machine load. Problem seems worse if you do a few of them. Initially thought the washing machine itself and used the Affresh cleaner tabs + hot water a couple times, but didn't seem to fix issue. When I smelled around, it feels like it's coming from where the hot and cold water taps (with the blue/red valves) connect to the washing machine lines. The wood the valves coming out of is split (i.e. the hot/water lines come up from our crawl space vertically to where the blue/red taps are located with the wood "split" where they come out of), but that could just be construction thing.. I didn't really "see" mold in that area, but not sure. Thoughts guys?
