A Yale ethicist who has studied AI for 25 years says the real danger isn’t superintelligence. It’s the absence of moral intelligence.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Wendell Wallach recently. He’s been working in AI ethics since before ChatGPT, before the hype, before most people in tech were paying attention. He wrote Moral Machines, worked alongside Stuart Russell, Yann LeCun and Daniel Kahneman. He’s not a commentator, he’s someone who has sat with these questions for decades. What struck me most in our conversation was his argument about AGI. Not that it’s impossible or inevitable, but that it’s the wrong goal entirely. A system can be extraordinarily intelligent and have zero moral reasoning. We’re building toward capability without asking what it’s capable of deciding. The section on accountability genuinely unsettled me. When AI causes harm, who is actually responsible? He maps out why the answer is almost always nobody in a way that’s hard to argue with. Worth watching if you’re tired of the extremes. Full interview: https://youtu.be/-usWHtI-cms?si=NBkwN-AmIshOXJsX submitted by /u/reesefinchjh to r/artificial [link] [comments]

To what extent is AI usage unethical?
So I'm pretty against AI but I am obviously aware that it CAN be useful and one thing that I've been having trouble with since I stopped using AI is practice questions for study. My main concerns with AI are (1) environmental issues (the biggest problem to me personally); and (2) IP theft which is undisclosed. I've been thinking about running a local model on my laptop (thus fixing the environmental problem) just to make my own practice tests, and they would just be for me to use, not published, so I feel like it wouldn't really hurt anyone in terms of IP. Would you consider this an ethical usage? I've heard people say it still isn't okay to run it locally because the models are still trained initially in a way that's bad for the environment, but I feel like it isn't really going to either support the companies by running it locally to continue training it this way (since they aren't making money off me running it locally, or for that matter even knowing I'm running it) or further impact the environment since it's already trained. I get it's about "the principle of it" but in reality it won't really make an impact, right? I'm also aware it makes mistakes and can make stupid questions of course but I don't think this is really relevant to the ethics. I also don't think its impacts on brain power really are relevant here because it's literally to help me study by making practice questions and not to actually tell me how to do anything. So tl;dr is it unethical to run a local LLM model to make myself practice tests and not publish it anyways so it doesn't spread IP without permission? is there really any sort of "ethical" use of ai?
i'm in my first year of college rn and EVERYWHERE on social media people are promoting ai and how to use it to build skills and shit. but then i read articles on how ai is misused, the rise in deepfakes, artists suffering, unemployment, there's so much to it. most importantly, it's destroying the plant,, the lack of fresh water is already a concern acc to the UN. i'm so confused. my morals don't allow me to learn anything related to ai, in fact i boycotted all of them long ago on reading how negatively it has been affecting the environment. but again, if i don't upskill myself in this field, i feel like i'd be left behind by everyone else. i can't seem to find out a solution to resolve my dilemma. submitted by /u/_six_sevennn_ to r/ArtificialInteligence [link] [comments]

Everyone acts like they care about “ethics” with AI, but the outrage is very selective.
Let us get real, If AI was only used by: CEOs big tech rich companies people would call it dystopian and dangerous (and I suppose, they’d be right). But when us ordinary, regular people use AI to write better work faster compete with writers way bigger than us now it’s suddenly “cheating” and “lazy.” So which one is it? Is AI bad because of what it is… or bad because normal people are using it too? If you ask me, people don’t hate AI. They hate that their given playing field isn’t as tilted in their favor anymore. No one says “Not everyone can do this.” anymore. The panic is because AI touches the one thing they built their identity around. It lowers the “cool factor” of their skill. Which makes every argument against it (except for the environmental concern) feel less like ethics and more like gatekeeping with a moral filter on it. submitted by /u/ownaword to r/WritingWithAI [link] [comments]

Going into AI ethics, is it worth it?
Hi, I'm a Computer Engineering and Philosophy double degree student set to graduate next June and I am thinking of going into AI ethics to leverage both my technical skills and philosophy background. I want to progress in the Philosophy aspect educationally, focusing on a masters + phd route but I'm wondering if I should pivot to something more managerial or stick to Philosophy only if I can't find many good opportunities in the future. I'm not in the EU or US, so finding local opportunities will be next to impossible, and I'm planning on doing my post-grad studies anywhere other than my home country -but as many of you will agree this is a huge investment with little ROI if I don't proceed carefully. I also don't want to give all my money to a gimmick Masters degree program that started 2-3 years ago to profit off the hype. I was hoping to hear from anybody working in AI Safety, ethics, Responsible AI or related fields since I feel pretty lost with planning and my professors are very clueless, so mentorship is slim. What would you have done before starting out in this field, and what would you recommend for someone like me? What should I start working on myself, and how will the field progress in the next couple of years in your opinion? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Economy_Scarcity_343 to r/AICareer [link] [comments]
