Best Air conditioner 2026 in India
As you know, I post an AC buying guide every year. So here’s the 2026 guide. But first, one important thing: a new ISEER star rating system has been implemented in 2026. Because of this, brands will launch new AC models with updated ISEER star ratings. Keep in mind that many 2025 models are now rated around 4 stars under the new system. At the same time, new 2026 AC models will likely be more expensive. So if you don’t care about the latest features, you can simply go with last year’s models. You’ll get the same cooling performance and save some money. You can either wait for the 2026 models or buy a 2025 model with the older rating — the choice is completely yours. Once the new 2026 AC models are launched, I’ll definitely make a separate buying guide for those models, so don’t worry. For now, here’s the 2026 AC buying guide based on the older BEE star ratings. -- I wouldn't recommend Window AC and Portable AC (waste of money) in 2026. _ Things to check before buying Ac > 5 years PCB warranty > 1 year comprehensive warranty on whole product. > 10 years compressor warranty and Copper coil, and coating on it. > Refrigerant should be R32 gas. If any company is not giving above 4 things, don’t buy. For surge protection, buy a stabiliser according to your voltage fluctuation range in your area. It will protect your AC PCB Now People will suggest buying a 3 star AC But trust me, go with 5 star model of the same 3 Star model you choose. I will save you money in long run. But if your budget is tight or AC use is less than 8-9hrs. than obviously buy 3 star. No bad brands provide for 4 way( vertical and horizontal) swing in their 3 star models model except Daikin - Convertable mode will work for 30 minutes, after that Ac will run in Auto mode. Installation: Don't forget to Vacuum your AC (till -30 psi) while installing. Otherwise AC will not cool your room. If the technician said not required then tell him to come with a Vacuum machine otherwise bhaga dena. Keep 1.5-4K extra for installation in your budget. Price may vary on Brands. You can provide all installation kits(drain pipe, 2.5mm 3 core wire, stand, 3 pin plug). Technician will charge installation fees only. >Installation is the most crucial part in AC installation no matter which brand AC You bought . If it was not done properly, AC would not cool your room. AC Brands Mitsubishi and General Both are the OGs in market. Those are premium segment AC and heavy duty AC. Like Mitsubishi AC costs 90K only for indoor outdoor units. You have to purchase copper pipe separately + installation charges. Total cost 95-100k. And it's after sales service available in few metro cities. Still they are king, if you have budget and after sales service available in your area then go for it, no regret. Daikin - Pros: excellent cooling, electric consumption is less, auto clean (Dew clean) , big outdoor unit with 100% copper - Cons: Old design, Lack of Smart features. - And Daikin inverter ac has Convertible mode, don't believe in others misinformation ➡️ I am using Daikin 1.5ton 3 star and 1.8ton 5 star in 2024 and recently bought 1.5 ton 3 star same model (2025) again.I am really happy with it. If you have a high budget go with O Genaral or Mitsubishi , otherwise only Daikin, again I am saying Daikin only. LG - It makes Silent Ac. But it's actual tonnage is less. Like they are selling a 1.24ton (2024) Ac as 1.5ton. Just check actual cooling tonnage before buying. 2025 models are good, I have mentioned some models in pin comment. Excellent service, own technician. Even available in tier 3 cities and villages. Hitachi - Pros: Excellent cooling machine specially 2 ton segment , auto clean - Cons: Consumes a little more electricity, temperature Display not available, Convertible mode unavailable technically auto Convertible so no issues. ➡️ Now only Hitachi is giving 5 years of Comprehensive Warranty (Other bands only 1 year). PCB is a vital thing in the Inverter AC. Carrier Sufficient cooling, auto clean, Convertible mode available. Overall good. Carrier is the company who invented AC. Panasonic - AC is excellent but Panasonic remote sucks (small), it will not respond or stop working after sometimes. Wi-Fi Smart feature available. You can control AC from your phone. - Cons: indoor-outdoor is very noisy. ▶️ Don't buy Lloyd, Samsung, Voltas, Godrej, Haier, IFB, Bluestar(except some models), Whirlpool. Every Brand could not be specialized in every machine. ➡️ Smart Wi-Fi is very useful (Alexa voice commands will be easy for elders to control Ac). AI features are marketing gimmick, don't fall on those trap. Now come to AC Tonnage according to Room size - 1 ton --- 100–150 sq ft - 1.5 ton --- 131–190 sq ft - 2 ton --- 191–250 sq ft - 2.5–3 --- 400–600 sq ft (on you can install two 2 ton Ac or centralized Ac). If your room is on top floor and sun expose all day. For inverter AC at extra 0.5 ton extra. Means if same size room in ground floor required one ton for sun exposed top floor room it will require 1.5 ton. ➡️ Bonus tip: suppose your room size is 170 sqft. top floor, directly sunlight exposed. Generally you think a 1.5 ton AC will be more than enough. No you need a 1.8-2 ton act. You can use Ac 2 ton Ac as 1.5ton ( some models have 7 Convertible modes, but convertible mode will work for 30 minutes, after that it will continue auto mode) but you can't use a 1 ton Ac 110% efficiency. It may affect your compressor. So it's better to buy higher Tonnage AC for some conditions. Don't run behind Brands, check ISEER value, Actual Tonnage and Maximum Cooling capacity and compare with your room size. Salesman may suggest you ac but keep in mind they will suggest only that brand or model which gives them maximum margin. It's recommended to use a good Stabilizer it will cost 2k only, It will save your PCB I mentioned some models in pin comment. I will update best models in future. submitted by /u/beingimmature to r/IndiaTech [link] [comments]

Daikin 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC Review: Is It Worth Buying in 2026?
Buying an AC in India today can be confusing. There are dozens of brands, star ratings, and features, and many of them look similar on paper. I wanted something reliable that cools quickly, runs quietly, and does not become a maintenance headache after a year or two. After comparing several models, I decided to try the Daikin 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC in my bedroom and used it for a few weeks to see how it performs in real conditions. My room is around 140 sq ft, and I usually run the AC 5 to 6 hours a day, mainly in the evenings and at night, so efficiency and noise levels were important factors for me. If you want to see the exact model I tested, this is the one. Daikin 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC: https://amzn.to/4ua3QJa Prices change frequently depending on season and availability, so it is always worth checking the latest price and user reviews. First Impressions The first thing I noticed after installation was the simple and minimal design. It does not look flashy, but it blends well with most room interiors. The indoor unit feels solid and well built, and Daikin uses a 100 percent copper condenser coil, which is better for durability and heat transfer. The remote is basic but has all the important controls. Highlights Simple and clean design Solid build quality 100 percent copper condenser coil Remote with turbo, sleep, swing, and temperature control Cooling Performance Cooling performance is where this AC really matters. When I switched it on during the afternoon heat, the room started cooling within a few minutes. In about 7 to 10 minutes, the room felt noticeably more comfortable. One thing I liked was how evenly the air spreads across the room. This model uses Coanda airflow, which directs air upward so it spreads across the room instead of blowing directly on you. The cooling feels more balanced and comfortable. Key observations Noticeable cooling within 7 to 10 minutes Even air distribution across the room Coanda airflow prevents direct cold blasts Turbo mode helps cool the room faster when it is very hot Power Consumption Before buying, I was confused between a 3 star inverter AC and a 1.5 ton 5 star model. While 5 star ACs are more efficient, the Daikin inverter compressor adjusts its speed automatically after the room reaches the set temperature, which helps reduce power usage. For my usage of 5 to 6 hours per day, the electricity consumption feels reasonable. Key points Inverter compressor adjusts speed automatically Power usage drops after initial cooling Good for moderate daily usage (5–6 hours) 5 star ACs are better for very long daily usage For comparison, this is a good 1.5 ton 5 star AC option if you want higher efficiency. Daikin 1.5 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC: https://amzn.to/4b7SqNr Air Quality and Filters This AC includes a PM 2.5 filter, which helps capture fine dust particles and pollutants. Since dust is common in many Indian homes, this feature is quite useful. After a few nights of use, the air in the room felt cleaner and less dusty compared to running just a fan. It is not the same as a dedicated air purifier, but it still helps improve indoor air quality. Key points PM 2.5 filter captures fine dust and pollutants Helpful for homes with dust exposure Air feels cleaner compared to using a fan Not a replacement for an air purifier, but still beneficial Dew Clean Technology Another feature that caught my attention is Dew Clean technology. It runs a self-cleaning cycle where moisture helps wash dust and bacteria from the indoor coil. At first it sounded like a marketing feature, but after using it a couple of times the airflow felt fresher, and the AC did not develop the usual dusty smell. Key points Self-cleaning cycle for the indoor coil Helps remove dust and bacteria buildup Airflow feels fresher after cleaning Can help maintain long-term performance Triple Display The Triple Display feature is a small but useful addition. The indoor unit can show different information such as the room temperature, set temperature, and error codes. It sounds like a small detail, but it actually helps you understand what the AC is doing instead of guessing. Noise Levels One reason I considered Daikin was its reputation for quiet operation, and this AC lives up to it. During normal cooling, the indoor unit is very quiet. Once the inverter compressor slows down after reaching the set temperature, the sound becomes barely noticeable. For night use, this makes a big difference, especially if you are a light sleeper. Key points Very quiet indoor unit during normal cooling Noise drops further after reaching the set temperature Comfortable for night-time use Quieter than many budget AC models Pros Excellent cooling performance even during hot summer afternoons Very quiet operation during night use Uniform airflow due to Coanda airflow design Dew Clean technology helps keep the internal coil cleaner PM 2.5 filter helps improve air quality Durable copper condenser coil Reliable inverter compressor technology Cons No WiFi or smart app connectivity 3 star rating consumes slightly more electricity than 5 star models Remote control feels basic Installation cost may increase depending on piping length Final Verdict After using the Daikin 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC for a few weeks, I can say it delivers where it matters most: strong cooling, quiet performance, and solid build quality. It does not include smart features like WiFi control, and a 1.5 ton 5 star AC would be more energy efficient. However, the cooling performance is excellent. Overall, it feels reliable, durable, and built for long-term use, which is what many people expect from a Daikin air conditioner. If you have any questions about this AC or your room size and usage, feel free to ask in the comments. I will try to help based on my experience. Things to Check Before Buying an Air Conditioner
Air conditioners have become an essential appliance in many homes, especially during the hot summer months. With rising temperatures, choosing the right air conditioner can make a big difference in maintaining comfort indoors. However, with so many models, brands, and features available in the market, selecting the right one can sometimes feel confusing. Before you buy an AC, it is important to consider several factors such as room size, energy efficiency, cooling features, and installation requirements. Understanding these factors will help you choose the best air conditioner for your home and ensure long-term performance. This guide will help you understand the most important things to check before buying an air conditioner. Room Size and AC Capacity One of the most important factors when buying an air conditioner is choosing the right capacity based on your room size. Air conditioners are generally measured in tons, which indicates their cooling capacity. If the AC capacity is too small, it will struggle to cool the room. If it is too large, it may consume unnecessary electricity. Choosing the right capacity ensures efficient cooling and better energy savings. A general guide for AC capacity is: Up to 120 sq. ft. – 1 Ton AC 120 to 180 sq. ft. – 1.5 Ton AC 180 to 250 sq. ft. – 2 Ton AC Always consider your room size and ceiling height before selecting the capacity of the air conditioner. Energy Efficiency and Star Rating Energy efficiency is another important factor to consider when buying an air conditioner. Since ACs run for long hours during summer, electricity consumption can be high. In India, air conditioners are rated by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) using star ratings. 5 Star AC – Most energy efficient 4 Star AC – Good efficiency 3 Star AC – Average efficiency Although a 5-star air conditioner may cost more initially, it can significantly reduce electricity bills over time. Investing in an energy-efficient AC is a smart choice for long-term savings. Type of Air Conditioner There are different types of air conditioners available, and the choice depends on your room size, budget, and installation requirements. Split Air Conditioner Split air conditioners are very popular for modern homes. They consist of two units: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. Split ACs are quieter, more efficient, and offer better cooling performance. Window Air Conditioner Window ACs are installed in a window or wall and are generally more affordable. They are suitable for smaller rooms and are easier to install. Inverter Air Conditioner Inverter air conditioners adjust the compressor speed based on the cooling requirement. This helps maintain a consistent temperature and reduces electricity consumption, making them a popular option for energy-efficient homes. Cooling Performance and Features Modern air conditioners come with advanced features that improve cooling efficiency and comfort. Some important features to look for include: Turbo cooling mode for faster cooling Sleep mode for comfortable nighttime temperature Auto restart during power cuts Multi-directional airflow for better air circulation These features can make your air conditioner more convenient and effective during extremely hot weather. Air Filters and Indoor Air Quality Many modern air conditioners include advanced air filters that improve indoor air quality. These filters help remove dust, bacteria, and pollutants from the air. Some common air filters include: Dust filters Anti-bacterial filters PM2.5 filters Anti-allergen filters These filtration systems can help create a healthier environment, especially for families with children or elderly members. Noise Level Noise is another important factor that many people overlook while buying an air conditioner. Some AC models can produce noticeable sound during operation. If you plan to install the AC in a bedroom or study room, choosing a low-noise model is recommended. Split air conditioners generally operate more quietly compared to window ACs. Installation and Service Support Proper installation is essential for the efficient functioning of an air conditioner. Incorrect installation can reduce cooling performance and increase electricity consumption. It is always better to buy from a trusted electronics store that offers: Professional installation Warranty support Reliable after-sales service Good service support ensures that your AC continues to perform well for many years. Brand Reputation and Warranty Choosing a reliable brand is always a good decision when purchasing an air conditioner. Well-known brands often provide better technology, durability, and customer support. You should also check the warranty offered by the manufacturer. Most air conditioners include: 1 year warranty on product 5 years warranty on PCB 10 years warranty on compressor (varies by brand) A good warranty provides peace of mind and protects your investment. Budget and Long-Term Value Price is an important factor, but it should not be the only factor when buying an air conditioner. Sometimes a slightly more expensive model with better features and energy efficiency can save money in the long run. Instead of choosing the cheapest option, it is better to focus on value for money, durability, and energy efficiency. Conclusion Buying an air conditioner requires careful planning and consideration. Factors such as room size, energy efficiency, type of AC, cooling features, air filtration, and service support all play a major role in selecting the right model. By understanding these important points, you can choose an air conditioner that provides efficient cooling, lower electricity bills, and long-lasting performance. Taking the time to research and compare different options will help you make a smart purchase and enjoy a comfortable indoor environment during the hot summer months. Is jumping up 1 ton for upstairs air conditioner OK in Las Vegas if using inverter compressor?
My 3 ton upstairs AC has never been able to keep up with the Las Vegas heat in summer. I'm getting new inverter ACs (Rheem RD18AY) and wanted to bump up the upstairs AC by 0.5 ton (from 3ton to 3.5 ton). However, inverter ACs only come in 1.0 ton increments. I know that you should only typically increase by 0.5 ton because of short cycling and humidity concerns, but would jumping up from 3ton to 4ton be OK with the inverter compressors since they can cycle down to running at a lower percent anyways and since humidity is not much of an issue in Las Vegas? Thanks for any advice! submitted by /u/saintwittgenstein to r/hvacadvice [link] [comments]

India AC Buying Guide 2026: Avoid These Mistakes Before Buying an Air Conditioner
A lot of people spend ₹30,000–₹70,000 on an AC and still suffer every summer. Not because the AC is cheap. But because they bought the wrong type, wrong tonnage, or believed marketing nonsense. Most AC reviews are misleading because creators use free units or sponsored installs and ignore real issues like high bills, cooling drop, and service problems I created this AC guide to prevent regret, not to promote brands, and to focus on real long-term usage and ownership experience. --------------------------- Best ACs in India 2026 (Shortlist) Best 1.5Ton 5 Star AC's 1. Daikin 1.5 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC Very energy efficient (5-Star) with high ISEER rating, helps reduce electricity bills. Strong and consistent cooling that keeps the room comfortable even during peak summer. Quiet operation with inverter compressor, comfortable for night use. https://amzn.to/3PlP5Tx 2. LG 1.5 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC Dual inverter compressor adjusts speed automatically, so cooling is faster and electricity usage stays lower. 6-in-1 convertible cooling lets you run the AC at lower capacity when full cooling isn’t needed. Quiet indoor unit and copper condenser make it comfortable for bedrooms and long daily use. https://amzn.to/4l9m5ui --------------------------- Best 1.5Ton 3 Star AC's 1. Daikin 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC Cools quickly and handles very hot afternoons without struggling. Energy efficient inverter helps keep electricity bills reasonable. Quiet operation with smooth airflow, comfortable for night use. https://amzn.to/4cx5bDE 2. Samsung 1.5 Ton 3 Star (2026 Model) AI mode + 5-step convertible helps save electricity based on usage. 4-way swing gives fast and even cooling even in peak summer. Wi-Fi support lets you control the AC from your phone easily. https://amzn.to/4bQ84NQ 3. Carrier 1.5 Ton 3 Star Inverter Split AC Inverter compressor adjusts power based on room temperature to save electricity. Turbo mode helps cool the room faster after turning on the AC. Copper condenser improves durability and cooling efficiency. https://amzn.to/4uqhHLN --------------------------- Below are the most common AC buying mistakes people make in 2026. 1) Buying the wrong tonnage (BIGGEST mistake) Most people ask: Is 1.5 ton enough? Wrong question. Reality: Underpowered AC → runs nonstop → high bill → poor cooling Overpowered AC → short cycles → humidity problems Basic rule (Indian conditions): Up to 120 sq ft → 1 Ton 120–180 sq ft → 1.5 Ton 180+ sq ft → 2 Ton --------------------------- 2) Blindly trusting “5 Star” rating People think: 5 Star = low bill. Not always. Reality in 2026: Star rating is tested at fixed conditions Your usage ≠ lab usage What actually matters: ISEER value (higher is better) Inverter efficiency at partial loads Two examples: Old 5-star non-inverter can consume more than a modern 3-star inverter Cheap 5-star AC with low ISEER = marketing trap --------------------------- 3) Ignoring inverter vs non-inverter difference This is not optional anymore. Non-inverter AC: ON → OFF → ON Loud Higher long-term power consumption Inverter AC: Adjusts compressor speed Quieter Better temperature stability In 2026, buying non-inverter = outdated choice, unless: Usage is submitted by

A crash course on generators, air conditioners, and soft starters
Lots of posts asking about how to pick a generator capable of running their home air conditioner (for good reason) so I thought I would write up a hopefully helpful explanation of what needs to be known and considered to choose one: Generator ratings, types, and you: This is a very basic introduction to generators. Generators are sold based on two numbers: running wattage in watts or kilowatts (this output can be maintained indefinitely) and surge wattage (which only lasts for a brief moment, think 100 milliseconds or so, under the right conditions). There are two basic types of generators: traditional ones and "inverter" generators. Traditional units are set up to spin windings of wires at a constant speed (usually 3600RPM) in a magnetic field to directly produce 240 Volt (V) 60Hz AC power. A traditional generator's ability to supply power is mostly limited by its ability to keep things spinning, and the size of a big pulse of current is mostly limited by the momentum of the spinning parts. This means that traditional generators can typically handle briefly supplying significantly more power than they are rated for (sometimes 2-3x!), although the quality of power will suffer. Inverter generators spin their windings at a variable speed depending on the most efficient engine speed for the power needed. They electronically convert the variable output of the windings to steady 240V 60Hz power using power transistors and other supporting circuitry. For reasons that involve a lot of solid-state physics the circuitry doesn't take kindly to being overloaded and is equipped with protective systems to make sure that doesn't happen. Further this circuitry is expensive so it is usually engineered to be juuuust capable of producing the rated power of the generator. Combined that means inverter generators typically don't have much spare capacity to handle large surges in power output. Inverter generators are generally heavily preferred for home use. The power is cleaner, they are much quieter, and they use a lot less fuel when running at low loads because they can slow the engine down instead of wasting energy keeping everything whirring at 3600RPM. But that lack of reserve power presents a problem when it comes to air conditioners. Why air conditioners are hard for a generator: The typical air conditioner is split into two major parts, an indoor "air handler" and an outdoor "compressor unit". The indoor unit has a fan motor to blow air through some cooling coils and through your house, and the outdoor compressor unit has both a fan motor to blow air over a bunch of coils to cool them and a compressor motor that pumps the coolant through the whole system. That compressor motor is by far the largest power draw so it is what I will focus on. A motor is different than a light bulb or heater in that a running motor pushes back hard against the flow of electricity when it is spinning. When a motor isn't spinning (like when it is first turned on) that push-back effect isn't there, so simply flipping a switch to turn it on results in a very large amount of electricity flowing through the motor until it begins to pick up speed (typically 100-200ms). It is that very large amount of electricity that makes it difficult for a generator to start a motor. Figuring out the needs of your AC: On the side of your outside unit is a plate that lists the electrical info for your AC. On that plate will be RLA and LRA numbers. RLA is the maximum current in amps A that the unit will draw when running at maximum effort at the highest rated outdoor temperature, LRA is the "locked rotor amps" which is the amount of current that will flow through the motor when it isn't moving because there's no push-back effect from the spinning motor. Multiply both by 240 to get power in watts (note 1) Here's my 2.5 ton AC as an example: https://i.imgur.com/JnP3Qmz.jpeg For my unit RLA is 12.8A which gives 3,072W (3kW) running watts. On the other hand the LRA is 64.0A meaning it draws an eye-popping 15,360W (15.4kW) at startup, nearly five times as much power! A medium sized (5-8kW) traditional generator might be able to pull that off (but it wouldn't be happy about it) and only the largest inverter units could manage it. Soft starters to the rescue Above I mentioned "simply flipping a switch" to turn on a motor. That's how a home air conditioner is normally set up, but there are other ways to handle starting a motor. First you should know that the electricity in your house that goes to your air conditioner compressor is 240V alternating current (AC). The voltage smoothly goes from 0V to 240V, back to 0V, to negative 240V, then back to 0V (note 2). It does that cycle 60 times per second, every second. A soft starter is basically a really really fast switch, so fast that it can turn on and off multiple times within a single 0V 240V 0V -240V 0V cycle. A control circuit is set up to turn the switch on right after the voltage hits 0V and then turn it off before the voltage gets all the way to 240V or -240V. The result is that the motor only "sees" a fraction of 240VAC, and since current (and power) depend on voltage that will drastically cut the power flowing through the motor while still (hopefully) giving it enough of a kick to start moving. After a couple cycles of reduced voltage the motor will be spinning a bit and starting to push back electrically, so the control circuit will gradually ramp up the time the switch is held on a bit longer each cycle until it is on 100% of the time. At that point the soft starter will bypass itself and act like a regular on/off switch in the on position. The result is (almost always) a very drastic reduction in power required to start the motor, typically to around 30% of the LRA number. As an added bonus the soft starter delays the compressor start by a few seconds, which allows the inside fan motor and outside fan motor to start up fully instead of the startup demand of all three motors hitting the generator simultaneously. For my unit a MicroAir EasyStart (the most popular type of soft starter) cut the current to 26A meaning the power needed went from over 15kW to about 6kW. That's the difference between a very very large, expensive, fuel-hungry inverter generator to something that is much more reasonable and economical. But here's the thing - the exact amount of current required to start a an air conditioner with a soft starter varies from air conditioner to air conditioner. I saw a drop to 40% for example, not 30%. People online can give a best guess but the only way to know for sure is to get a soft starter, install it, and see what the resulting motor starting current is. Without that real world information you cannot know for sure whether a particular generator will be able to start your air conditioner or not. TLDR summary: If you know you want to get a generator and hook it up to run your main air conditioner you should get a soft starter, install it, and see what the resulting current is and then use that number to guide your generator purchase.. You will basically need that starting wattage plus another kilowatt or two to handle other stuff around the house like lighting and your refrigerator. note 1 - we actually should be using Volt-Amperes here since we really care about apparent power which is different than instantaneous power because alternating electricity is wierd, but watts works good enough for this. note 2 - it actually goes to about 339V at the peak because 240V is an rms measurement. There are good reasons for that that have nothing to do with this discussion, "alternating electricity is weird" applies again. submitted by /u/Derigiberble to r/Generator [link] [comments]

Its almost summer. Find out what this heat and air guy has to say about your air conditioner. These "weird" tips will lower your bills! Doctors hate him.
I'm your friendly HVAC repairman here to share my munificent expertise. I have 19 yrs experience working on mostly residential central heating and air conditioning. To avoid common complaint replies, The following caveats apply to everything written here: This post is directed at middle class homeowners with forced air split systems (inside heater and outside air conditioner). This post assumes budget is a very real concern, and will lean towards cheaper DIY points as opposed to hiring a team of mechanical engineers to optimize your comfort/efficiency ratio. This post assumes you are fairly handy. Never do any repairs without fundamentally understanding what you are working on. Being over your head while working on your system can cost you lots of $$$ in professional repair or medical/funeral costs. Yes I know "Freon" is a trademarked name for a refrigerant. Your AC worked decently last summer, and just want to do maintenance: Replace or clean your air filters. These are either in the return air grills or at the furnace. Air flow is king for a working air conditioner. Dirty filters throw off the working pressures in the freon circuit and can cause all sorts of chaos. Loss of efficiency and capacity, uncomfortable rooms due to low air flow, and freezing up the evaporator coil (which kills ALL air flow, can make a water mess, and can damage the compressor outside $$$). The cheap fiberglass disposable filters are enough to protect the system from dirt build-up, and allow the most air flow. Higher end pleated and electrostatic filters will improve air quality but will also get dirty faster and restrict airflow more. Depending on the house, and usage, you should change filters anywhere from monthly to seasonally. Most should be every 1-2 months, the writing on the filter package is meaningless. Change when there is visible dirt on it. Wash your outside Air Conditioner (condenser), remove obstructions. Again, air flow is king. If your AC condenser coil is packed with grass clippings, stuck in a corner with fences, walls, dumpsters, its not going to work well. Do not put a screen around it. Do not build a shade over it. Do not put try to hide it with a lattice or any other enclosure. Your AC wants to be free with the wind blowing across its face. Use a garden hose to wash out dirt, cottonwood, dog hair, grass, etc from the coil. The best way is to disconnect the power, lift the top (try to avoid having to disconnect fan motor wires, otherwise take a pic to get them back on right) and spray with water from the inside out. Let dry before turning power back on if water got into electrical area. Your AC has done broke itself, should you repair or replace? If your system is over 5 yrs old, most of the time it is going to have the R-22 freon. This stuff became expensive. The EPA got cranky a few years ago and accelerated the planned phase out to the newer R-410a. In everyday terms this means you will not likely replace just the outside air conditioner if it has a major problem. At minimum you will likely be replacing the evaporator coils as well. If you are replacing the AC and coil, many times you are getting close to the price of doing the complete system including furnace. This situation reduces homeowner's practical choices. Air conditioners used to be replaced all the time for submitted by
