I genuinely do not understand how a travel eSIM service can fail this badly at the one thing travelers actually need it for. For most of my trip, the eSIM appeared connected, but basic functionality was completely unreliable. Messages would randomly fail to send, maps would not load routes or search results properly, tickets and reservations would not open when needed, and I constantly had to hunt for Wi-Fi just to do basic things. What made the experience especially miserable is that once I realized the mobile data could not be trusted, I had to start planning my days around the possibility of suddenly having no usable internet. I started taking screenshots of routes back to the hotel, restaurant locations, tickets, reservation confirmations, transit directions, everything. It sounds minor until you realize you are doing this multiple times every single day during what is supposed to be a vacation. And of course, plans do not always go perfectly. Sometimes I changed locations unexpectedly or stayed out longer than planned, and suddenly I was in an unfamiliar area with unreliable internet and no updated directions. Since English is not my first language and I am already a socially awkward person, I repeatedly had to stop strangers to ask for directions and ask them to repeat themselves because I could not even reliably pull up maps on my phone. I also ended up connecting to all sorts of random public Wi-Fi networks without even having the chance to properly think about whether they were secure, something I am normally extremely careful about. It also forced me to constantly think about battery life because I never knew when I would next find Wi-Fi or whether trying to reload apps for ten minutes would just drain my phone for nothing. The most infuriating part is that this was not some remote area. This was a major international city where mobile connectivity should have been the easiest thing in the world. And after all of this, customer support initially talked about a refund, only to later pivot into offering partial store credit based on the “unused portion” of the plan, as if the issue was that I failed to consume enough data rather than the service itself being unreliable and often unusable. I’m going for a month soon and have heard trip is cheaper with more data (I like to watch a lot of YouTube on transit and that’s my main eater of data). hey everyone, i just finished a 14-day trip splitting my time between toronto and the rockies (banff/jasper). before i went, i spent hours reading threads here, so i wanted to give back and drop a massive brain dump of random things i learned. hopefully, this helps someone out! 1.the weather is completely bipolar especially in the rockies. it would be freezing at 7 am, and by 2 pm i was sweating in a t-shirt. do not bring giant heavy parkas if you are going in the shoulder season. layers are your best friend. a good windbreaker and a fleece will save your life. cash is dead, but tipping is wild literally everywhere takes tap to pay (apple pay/google wallet). i exchanged $200 cad before the trip and had to force myself to spend it at the airport on the way back. just bring a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. also, be prepared for the tipping prompts on the machines, they often start at 18% or 20% even for takeout coffee. sort out your data before you land (do not roam) canadian telecom prices are notoriously a joke. my home carrier wanted to charge me $12 a day for roaming. i usually use airalo but it kept dropping signal when i was in europe last year, so i tried a superalink esim this time. it was like 15 bucks for the whole trip. it auto-connected to the bell and telus networks (which are the big ones there) and i had solid 5g almost everywhere, even on the highways. just a heads up: set it up on your phone while you are still at home on wi-fi, and just turn the line on when you land. getting around toronto if you fly into pearson (yyz), just take the up express train to downtown (union station). it's so much faster and cheaper than an uber. also, download the 'transit' app (the green logo). google maps is fine, but the transit app is way more accurate for tracking the streetcars and buses in real-time. you can just tap your credit card on the transit readers now, so you don't even need to buy a presto card if you are only there for a few days. tim hortons is... just okay i know it's a canadian staple, but don't expect gourmet coffee. it's cheap and gets the job done when you are on a road trip, but toronto has an insane indie coffee scene. go find local cafes instead! let me know if you guys have any specific questions about itineraries or anything else. happy to help! submitted by /u/PlumHeadache to r/canadatravel [link] [comments]

Just wanted to share my experience. I am Korean-American and usually purchase a physical sim for a temporary phone number and data. However, my last trip was just one week (8days) so I opted to buy a 7-day Airalo esim and 1-day esim. This was my first time using an Airalo esim in Korea. Europe and Mexico worked beautifully, so I had little reason to doubt its effectiveness. But! This was not the case. The esim was advertised as a KT network sim, but upon installing, I found that it was a Starhub (Singapore) sim that was meant for roaming. And this was the start of my problem.... My Kakaotalk wouldn't connect. Naver Maps wouldn't load or navigate. Even my Netflix app was recognizing it as from Singapore, and I couldn't watch many content that was only available in Korea. Without communication and map, I was left lost and at the mercy of public wifi. I contacted Airalo support, and the agent was not very helpful in providing a solution. I finally asked for a refund on the unused esim and used the first sim to purchase a KT esim from KT directly. I’m going to be completely fair and say the service itself is great and works just fine. Easy to install, usually decent coverage. Fine. But if you ever run into an issue (which for me has been the last four times) their customer service will not help you and you’ll be stuck. This time I purchased an eSIM on arrival in my destination country. I wired $9 to fund my account and then used said account to purchase the eSIM, except the eSIM isn’t available. I spoke to customer service who say the payment failed and to contact my bank, which is closed due to the time zone. I provided all screenshots to prove I funded the account specifically for this purchase, and the funds subsequently going to Airalo. They’re not having it. I’ve asked to raise a complaint, they explicitly said not until I speak to my bank. The two issues are separate and me resolving the eSIM issue has no bearing on my consumer rights to raise a complaint. They evaded my request and offered $6 as a gesture of apology. LOL. If they’d have offered $9 I could have just received the eSIM I paid for. I asked five times to raise a complaint, each time they poetically told me no. On the sixth attempt they said “The complaint is internal, and I have already submitted it. I believe you are directing the complaint towards me.” But… I never raised the complaint or submitted any information - nor will they provide a complaint reference. Again - fantastic service when it works. An absolute nightmare when it doesn’t. Their customer service is unprofessional and WILL leave you in the lurch should you encounter problems. In all the back and forth with them I’ve been able to buy a physical sim for a lot less and am on my way with my trip. Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu and Beijing. It’s not my first time solo traveling but I was incredibly nervous. I don’t speak Mandarin, I can get overwhelmed, I was worried if the people would be kind or accepting, if my internet, translator and maps would work (even though I made sure to have the correct apps). The result: Landing in Shanghai and catching a DiDi was incredibly overwhelming. I spent about a day to adjust to everything and then I was good! I had an AMAZING time. Most people were kind (though I got alottttt of stares and random photos taken of me, especially in Chengdu lol but it didn’t bother me). The food was great and the cities were beautiful. Travelling in Europe 2 years ago I found Airalo fine except for one major problem. If I wanted to pay a bill, buy something online, make a bank transaction or do anything that required a confirmation via a code to verify said transaction, I was not able to access the code. This caused numerous problems and frustrations. I used Airalo for the first time on a recent trip from Chicago to Madrid and wanted to share how it went. I usually buy a local SIM at the airport or pay for my carriers international plan, but this time I decided to try an eSIM instead. Just got back from a trip where I made the mistake of relying on Airalo for mobile data. Long story short: the eSIM barely worked, support was useless, and their idea of compensation was giving me some “Airmoney” after claiming that 20% of the package had been used — so, no refund. Yes, apparently some signal for a bit of time is enough to void any responsibility. They pocketed $20 and lost a loyal customer who would’ve happily spent much more over time. If you’re traveling and thinking about eSIMs — skip Airalo. There are better, more customer-focused options out there. Hi all. I had recent fraud on my Airalo account. Airalo basically said the multiple eSIM card purchases made seconds from each other for use in North Africa and the Middle East were consistent with my account usage, and refused to reimburse me for an ESIM that had already been activated. Fortunately the $$ amount of fraud was very small, and I had already cancelled my card and filed a claim with my credit card company. I anticipated Airalo’s response due to a number of red flags even trying to get a hold of them. Subsequent to my experience I started researching similar fraud claims, and discovered fairly frequent reports on Reddit, Trust Pilot, and elsewhere with almost identical stories. Some people are out thousands of dollars! Some are currently traveling so closing their card due to fraud is a major hassle. There are several similar claims that were posted on the r/airalo subreddit just today! Airalo refuses to take responsibility! As convenient as Airalo has been for use in Japan and other countries, I do not trust the security of their app and I will not be using their services in the future. At the very least I would suggest deleting any saved credit card info on file with them. Unlike other apps, Airalo does not require secondary CVV authentication, making it easy for such fraud to be committed. Other individuals have reported that they use randomly generated strong passwords and that Google analytics associated with their Google account used to access Airalo show no remote access to their Airalo account. Just got back from a trip to Italy and Spain and wanted to warn fellow travelers about my awful experience with Airalo. TL;DR: Airalo's service was unreliable, customer support was useless, and there are much better options out there. Avoid Airalo at all costs.I bought an Airalo eSIM for my trip, thinking it would be a convenient option. Big mistake. The service worked about half the time, and when it did work, it would constantly disconnect and reconnect. I'd have to toggle airplane mode or restart my phone constantly just to get a signal back. I spent more time trying to get it to function than actually using my phone. When I reached out to customer support, they were no help at all. Just generic troubleshooting steps that didn't solve anything. I wasted so much time trying to get it to work reliably. After days of frustration, I gave up and switched to RoamFlux. Not only was their plan cheaper, but the service was infinitely better. I had a solid connection the entire time, no issues whatsoever. When I asked Airalo for a refund, they initially refused. It wasn't until I mentioned disputing the charge with my bank that they finally agreed to refund me. Bottom line: DO NOT USE AIRALO. There are so many better options out there. I had a great experience with RoamFlux, but do your own research and pick literally any other service. I just got back from Japan for a trip (2023-09-19 - 2023-09-26). So, I wanted to compare the two systems that were the most popular. Both phones are Apple iPhone 14 Pro - PROVIDER UNLOCKED. I chose Airalo and installed Ubigi on my wife's. We were constantly together and typically did all usage side by side for the same thing. Both were setup and installed prior to leaving for Japan. Itinerary: Narita to Harumi Tokyo (Harumi, Tsukiji, Ueno) Ueno to Naganoharakusatusuguchi (Limited Express Kusatsu-Shima 1) Round Trip Kusatsu, Gunma Prefecture Ueno to Joso Ibaraki Tsukuba Science City Joso Ibaraki to Mejiro Tokyo (Meijiro, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Harajuku) Mejiro to Narita Airalo was a constant 4G. Ubigi was a mostly 5G and sometimes LTE. I used the PERSONAL HOTSPOT from both providers, and also had no issues. I didn't use it for watching videos on my iPad but I did use it for looking up information on the bigger screen and using the maps to get a better view of the train lines. Both of the apps were easy enough to use. However, the beginning of the Ubigi started as soon as the eSIM was installed, and Airalo started as soon as you connect in Japan. So, there was that difference. We got the 30 day plans, so there was no worries for our trip. I gotta say, I didn't really have any issues with either systems, we did do the following as soon as we were in the air headed for Tokyo (again iOS): Open the Celluar settings Open the standard provider settings and turning it OFF. "Turn On This Line" Then one by one go through all the applications installed on the phone and turn them OFF in the celluar settings. We kept the standard Apple system and applications turned on (Mail, Messages, Maps...) Obviously, the Airalo and Ubigi apps should also be on. We turned off anything that could STREAM data (Apple Music, Spotify...) The rest is up to you. My wife with these settings having a 10GB/30 Day plan, only used 2 GB. We used maps, messages, and mail every day to map our destinations check our locations and keep in check. She has installed also LINE application for communication with her family in Japan. I will say Messages in iOS was the biggest issue. Since, most of my contacts were using the phone number, those no longer worked. I had to create a connection to my wife using our iCloud email addresses. Once, we connected using email, then we had no issues. So, if you have favorites in Messages that you have been communicating with and they no longer seem to work, then we simply added their email address to the same conversation (creating a group) and then it communicated just fine. Example - My Wife and I thread was: Wife Phone Number (555-5555) to My Phone Number (555-5556) So, we just added "another person" to the thread Wife's iCloud email ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])) to my iCloud email ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])). Conclusion, while either system seemed to work great, no connection issues, I would chose UBIGI over Airalo in Japan. Only because I want to use the fastest speed available. We would definitely choose eSIM over a WiFi device that you have to hold and charge everyday.
