Can someone explain the appeal of airport lounges if I live in a major city with direct flights most places?
I’ve seen the airport lounge trend spike in recent years. Why I definitely see the benefit for those who travel often and have to deal with layovers or cancellations, I’m trying to determine its benefit for me personally. I live in sunny Los Angeles, so flights are very rarely canceled from here, and I almost always have direct flights in the US for where I travel (NYC, Chicago) and for international trips, it’ll usually be in Istanbul or Paris. Due to this, I can’t see the personal appeal of airport lounges. I don’t wan to spend even more time at the airport than I have to, as it’s not a fun experience (even with Pre-Check/Global Entry). ULPT: Get into airport lounges for free as a stranger’s guest.
I’ve worked this with good success when traveling solo. The “ethicality” of this one can be debated, but it’s really just taking advantage of the kindness of strangers. The caveat is that it probably won’t work at lounges for certain credit card holders, AmEx, Chase, etc., so don’t bother trying it at those if you don’t have their card. The premise of this trick is to invite another passenger to invite you into the lounge with them as their guest without you even having to ask them. Many business travelers have guest privileges attached to their lounge access which often goes unused. 🔑 KEY POINT: You must wait until another solo passenger is walking up to the concierge and get in line with them at the same time. You need to get in front of them in line, so make sure you’re first. Try to find someone who looks like they’re traveling for business and isn’t too thrilled to be there—people who look like they’ve spent more time in airport lounges than they care to. Be extremely polite, you could even wave them forward and say “Go ahead”. 99% of the time they’ll say “No no, you go ahead”. You thank them and wish them a pleasant journey, with a smile. What you’re doing here is building a little relationship. You walk up to the concierge with ID and boarding pass in hand. They’ll greet you and scan your boarding pass to check your eligibility for the lounge. They’ll look confused and ask you if you have this or that status, whatever the typical entry requirement is. You say “Yes, I have (airline name) reward status.” When you’re questioned again, you can express some confusion/disbelief using some body language, nothing over the top. Be cool about it and apologize for your confusion, and turn to leave. Here’s where the person behind you comes in. They will have been watching your interaction with the concierge, and if they liked you during your brief interaction, they’ll feel some sympathy/secondhand embarrassment for you, and offer to bring you in as a guest. This exact scenario has played out for me the last two times I’ve attempted to enter a lounge. So if you’re flying solo and look presentable, and act like you belong when you get to the lounge, there’s a very good chance the kind stranger behind you will offer to let you in. submitted by /u/Mr_426 to r/UnethicalLifeProTips [link] [comments]

How I Get Into Airport Lounges Without a Credit Card
This might sound obvious, but I’ve been doing it for a few years now and it actually works. When I’m checking in at the airport, I just ask people at the lounge counter: Can I be a guest. Most people are happy to and it doesn’t cost them anything extra (besides the yearly fee). I’ve done this in Madrid, Porto, Seoul, etc. Sometimes we chat for a bit, have a drink, then head to our flights. It’s a small thing, but it’s saved me a lot of money and led to some fun airport conversations. Just wanted to share this travel hack with everyone. submitted by /u/bookflow to r/digitalnomad [link] [comments]

Airport lounges are just not worth it anymore
This is pretty much a rant, and I have seen a lot of people here complaining about the same, so might as well just add some more fuel to the fire. Lounges are just not worth it anymore. I thought this was mostly a US problem, but I find myself in Rome as I type this, and both lounges at the international terminal have 50+ people lines to get in. Absurd. Basically, lounge access is so prevalent nowadays that it has become worthless. The wait times, the quality of the service… everything has plummeted in the last few years. Lounges have become glorified waiting rooms. At this point, I feel like the best thing to do is to actually pay and sit down for lunch/dinner at a nice restaurant in the airport. I’ll happily spend money for good food and service to pass the time at the airport versus waiting to be packed like chickens inside a “VIP Lounge.” submitted by /u/armanz117 to r/amex [link] [comments]

Make Airport Lounges for the Few Again
Just as the title implies. There are letting too many people into airport lounges and it's causing them to be terrible. In an airport lounge now with people who wouldn't have even been allowed in 5-10 years ago. What's worse is they also bring their whole families and either destroy the buffet so you no longer want to get food or they tie up the staff so your order takes forever. Even worse are the meeting rooms where they've become play places for unsupervised children. Can't make a phone call or get work done without incessant screaming. I'm glad some premium credit cards are going the extra mile and raising annual fees but they need to do more, like restricting guests and keeping it one child per adult. Lounges used to be great and they can be--and should be--again. submitted by /u/Majestic_Writing296 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Unpopular Opinion: I'd rather sit at home than an airport lounge
Some of my family get super excited about airport lounges and want to go to the airport 4 hrs early to guzzle as much free wine as they can. Lounges are better than sitting at the gate. But just chilling at home, with my own food and drinks, is way more comfortable. I don't need to maximize my Priority Pass by downing a bottle of cheap wine and 20 slices of cold cut before every flight. I seriously think my dad treats every buffet like a challenge to defeat. submitted by /u/goingback2back to r/travel [link] [comments]

AITA for paying for a lounge at an airport during a long layover?
I'm traveling with five friends now and we are travelling cheap. However we had one long layover in an airport with a great VIP lounge. The thing about these lounges is that they have free food and liquor. And comfortable chairs and shower facilities. I told my friends what I was about and they all said that they didn't want to waste money. So I went to the lounge by myself. I had some snacks. A few drinks. A quick nap. A long hot shower. And then I caught up with my friends at the gate. My phone was fully charged, I was bright eyed and bushy tailed. And a little drunk. When we started talking they were bitching about the cost of everything at the airport. They send why I looked so pleased with myself. I told them about my stay in the lounge. Two of them got visibly angry. They said I was an asshole for not telling everything their was in the lounge. They had actually spent more on food and drinks than I had. Plus I got to nap in a comfy chair and have a shower. I said that lounges aren't a secret and that the internet exists. They could have looked up the same information I did. submitted by /u/Ok_Fisherman5205 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
