I have an Eufy doorbell, you can set it up to Chime on the Echo (Amazon) devices which connect via WiFi. So keep your Eufy doorbell, buy an Echo dot (they are cheaper) and let it Chime on that when the doorbell is pressed. This is how I have mine set up too. I have 2 Echo devices in the house, including 1 upstairs, so no matter where I am in the house I can hear the doorbell ring.

Well, it’s time to move on from this device. My wife and I recently noticed that it regularly shows us ads that we didn’t ask for. After spending hours combing through all the settings and turning off everything except for basic photo album viewing, we still get ads. we feel this is too invasive to have in our home. Unfortunately, we use it for some home automation such as turning lights on and off. Hello. I'm planning on turning my room into a smart room and I'm considering the Echo Dot. Mainly for music and having some ambient music in my room aswell as controlling bulbs and somestuff around. Currently only considering a room to see if it's worth turning my entire home smart eventually. I am asking this question because of the current state of Amazon Echos. A bunch of Reddit posts and reviews I saw say that alternatives are better and that Echo has alot of problems right now. Can somebody point out what's going on and if it's worth getting one? I’ve been using my Echo for thunderstorm sounds for the last 6 years. Prior to that I used it for info and reminders, but purely use it for white noise now. Alexa just notified me that on March 1st, they’re going to start limiting my listening to four hours unless I upgrade to Prime. Then she started playing a completely different audio than what I’ve grown familiar to in the last decade. I guess now is the time to finally cut the cord and find an alternative that doesn’t have an incentive to listen to my conversations. We had a good run, but all good things must end. The bad news for them is that, since I’m anti-Amazon in the last year or two, I won’t be buying my alternative from them! ETA: Appreciate everyone recommending free alternative options for sleep sounds! I would like to have a small radio or clock (separate from my phone) that does this, so YouTube and stuff isn’t my preferred route right now. This is a bit of a rant. I had been using echos mostly as a glorified speaker, Have an echo studio in my living room, a few echos around the house and so far I have liked them. They are usefull enough for what I need them to be. I have never owned an echo show, really haven't seen the use on one of them. A couple of weeks ago decided to pull the trigger and got an echo show 21, decided that it was a bit of an investment, particularly since they are over 300 usd in my country which is close to the minimum salary here but anyways. Started as a great experience, could put some photos, my calendar, todo list and a few things that seemed like a good idea then to my ugly realization..... ads... ads everywhere. I just decided to put a big screen next to my working space that would show me ads. For a moment I felt a cold shiver of the sundden realization I was kind of living a black mirror episode. Reached amazon to ask about how to remove the ads completely. and after jumping between a few tech supports one basically told me that my device was theirs in some elaborated language. that the 300 ish dollars screen I bought was subzidised. I was like damn, for 300 bucks I can get a fully fledged laptop or ipad that would do the same and probably more. I can't adjust the volume on their own to a comfortable level. There's 1-2-3-4-5 Volume steps? Whilst 1 is too quiet and 2 too loud for me in the morning. If I listen via spotify, I can adjust in pinches - convenient! I can't connect AI conviently Yes - there are AI skills. You connect them - open them, it takes time. You may ask 5'ish questions or so until you're at the limit. Pay for the rest. What the flip? AMAZON! Add an AI to Alexa, right meow! You are behaving like my deaf Grandma Fucking Alexa! I’m quite shocked to see this Alexa plugged in and active (it’s playing smooth jazz). I’m reading in some states this is a HIPAA violation, is that accurate for my state? This is a gynecologist office in a red state so I have concerns of how this could be misused. I have Alexa at home so I know how they work in theory, but I also do not discuss sensitive topics at home and live alone. This seems like something that wouldn’t be ok. Everyone has an Alexa now and I feel left out lol. Echo is $54 but Buyhatke chrome extension shows it was $41 a few months ago so the price went up which is annoying. Is it actually helpful for everyday stuff or does it just sit there after a week? Obligatory occurred today. Sorry if it’s too long. As part of my job, I attended a conference as a speaker, this is the kind of event where people network in between sessions and the kind with promotional merch from sponsors. As soon as I arrived, I noticed that one of the tech giants had a table with some of their merch and an Amazon Echo Dot. That’s neat! I thought. Throughout the day, I visited the different tables and grabbed some of the trinkets they had. Stickers, a keychain, some funny socks, yet the echo dot remained there. I noticed that periodically they would restock their supply of things people took as they chatted. Near the end of the day, I gathered the courage to speak to the rep that was manning the table with the echo dot. I really have no use for an echo dot, but I recently got a digital doorbell and It works with the Alexa ecosystem and I thought it might be cool to get the doorbell to ring upstairs, especially if it was for free. I didn’t want to miss up on the chance of taking home another piece of domotica, just because “I didn’t ask”. Me: hey! What do you have to do to get the echo dot. Rep: oh it’s easy, all I need is your business card. Me: oh I don’t have a business card. Rep: no problem! Do you have linked in? Me: yes I do! *spends a good 2.5 minutes trying to log in, resetting my password, figuring out the 2FA all the while speaking to the nice rep” Me: here is the qr. Rep: great! Scans it. At this moment, someone came over and told the rep that they needed to go somewhere else. The rep got up from the table, gave me two thumbs up and said: “Ok you’re all good!! “ And just left me there alone. The echo dot on the table. I stood there for what must have been a good 55 seconds thinking about what to do next. Is that it? The echo dot is mine? The next speaker was just starting in the room next door so I thought “I guess I’m good to take it home, I better get back to the session”. I grabbed the little guy from the table and quickly found a seat at the auditorium, the echo dot sat on the chair next to me. While the speaker was presenting, I noticed that some of the organizers were hastily walking up and down the aisles, looking around the crowd. A sense of doom started to stir within me. One of them quickly paused in the aisle next to me, but didn’t say anything. They left. Whew! I’m In the clear!!! I thought. I was not. When the speaker finished their presentation. A very nice person, one of the organizers sat down next to me, this is when I knew I had FU. She very nicely and politely explained that the echo dot that was occupying the seat next to me (she pointed to it) was the prize to a very special draw they were going to have at the end of the session. She then very nicely asked if it was ok if she took it back to the main area. Again she pointed at it. I quickly grabbed from the seat and gave it to her; I couldn’t get it away from me fast enough. I apologized but not a lot of words came out of me, I was fully aware of the FU. I wanted the earth to swallow me. If I wasn’t next on the roster of speakers, I would’ve bolted from the event. And moved to Finland, probably. TLDR: inadvertently mistook a two thumbs up as a sign that I could take a tech gadget from a work event thinking that big tech was just giving away free stuff.
