this is just a quick LLM mockup. it's based on my current utility setup, to get my idea across. Essentially, all I want is an analogue face augmented with my calendar events. A countdown widget till next scheduled event would also be extremely helpful. If I was redesigning from scratch, id probably push the numbers out and have the events as multicoloured triangular slices filling in the middle. I made a custom apple watch app to show the candidates evaluations live on my watch face so I can see them at a glance while at work. It's using the Middle complication on the Modular face. FENs are polled from Lichess and Stockfish is running every 30 seconds to give a new eval. Been 10 months since my last post (and 2.5 years, almost to the day, since I started) and still loving it! In May of 2023 I started wearing an Apple Watch Ultra (comes with cellular) and stopped carrying a phone. I also have "do not disturb" permanently turned on (all notifications suppressed except calls from contacts) on my watch and other devices (and no notification badges on my laptop apps). I still own an iPhone whose cushy retirement job is to house my SIM card and update my watch. It spends 99% of its time stuck to my kitchen wall (charging) regardless of whether I'm at work or at home. It also usually has bluetooth fully disabled so that it never grabs my airpods from my watch. This has significantly improved my quality of life, I love it, I have no regrets, and I have no intention of regularly carrying a phone again. I work a busy technical manager job (>10 direct reports, lots of meeting, project management, and deadlines) and not carrying a phone has never caused a significant problem (but does require some deliberate planning). Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) But I want to carry a phone. I feel personally attacked. That's not a question. But seriously, I'm not trying to preach or say that everyone should do this. I've just found that many people actually wish they could (or are curious to try), but they think it can't be feasible. It can :) So you don't use your phone to browse the web or go on social media at all? Correct. What about texting? How did you make this Reddit post? Exclusively on my laptop (or speech-to-text through AWU in a pinch). I also don't have instagram, tiktok, X, etc. accounts (personal choice). What if you need to get hold of someone fast or vice-versa? Phone call on my watch (either directly over its built in mic & speaker, or using my airpods). This applies to work and personal life. What about an emergency? What if you get lost or stranded? The watch has maps, GPS, and cellular (and now satellite since upgrading to AWU3). I've called 911 from my watch once for an emergency and it worked without any problems. What if you miss an important text or notification? If it's actually urgent they'll call. For everything else, all my FOMO and phone separation anxiety resolved itself within 2 to 3 weeks all on its own. I no longer get urges to check notifications or scroll social media. Genuinely. It's amazingly freeing. What about music? Stream it directly from my watch via airpods. Also have lots of music saved locally to the watch so don't have to use data if I don't want to. What about battery life? I have wifi at home and at work, so rarely on cellular. I use an old Apple Watch SE for sleep tracking (worn on my other wrist so they each get a break), so my day watch charges overnight and I start every day with full charge. It's never run out, I don't have watch face battery indicators, and I have genuinely zero battery life anxiety. Grocery shopping? Public transit? All my tap-to-pay works on my watch. As does my homekey entry to unlock my house (lockbox + physical key as backup). I regularly go about my day with totally empty pockets and it's wonderful. So you never take your phone with you? When I travel I'll usually bring my phone. But it lives in my backpack (and often in the hotel room) and is treated purely as a travel aid tool. I'll also bring my phone when I know I'll need a phone-specific app (less and less necessary; these days it's only if I know I'll need to call a Lyft or Uber and can't easily call a taxi). How do you take pictures? I don't. I really thought I'd miss being able to do so (this was a big trade-off in the original experiment), but turns out I actually don't. May or may not generalize to other people in general. I almost never looked back on old photos anyway. I'm far more present now. If I really wanted photos of an event (hasn't happened yet) I could ask anyone else who was there. I have a work iPad (just used for work) that I can use to take photos if necessary for work (e.g. to scan documents). How do you jot down quick notes on the go? I made a super basic Apple Shortcut (native app) to add a Reminder to a "Notes to self" list and assigned it to the action button. I just: click --> speech-to-text --> done. Also cloud-synchs the note to my laptop. You could alternatively use the native "Voice Memos" app. It's super handy. Once you get over feeling weird speaking reminders and notes to your watch (takes a day) it works perfectly. I want to try this, but it feels too scary and like such a big change. You don't have to jump from 0 to 100% all at once! You can ease into it. I spent a week or so still carrying my phone with me but trying to see if I could just use my watch and not use my phone. Gave me a sense of security. And then I "graduated" to leaving my phone in my bag (instead of in my pocket). And then leaving it at home briefly, like when going to the gym, for a walk, or to run errands. There'll likely be some use cases you don't foresee at first. They'll be trivial to handle phoneless once you've got the proper replacement system set up, but you probably won't think of everything (specific to your situation) the first time. You also don't have to go all the way. Maybe you find a happy middle ground of partial phone use mixed with partial phonelessness. Maybe phoneless Sundays? Experiment :) This sounds judgmental or insincere. Surely there are are downsides? I totally get this isn't practical for some folks, or that they just don't want to. No judgment. My goal is to share that this is possible and to debunk the 1000 false reasons why people think there would be issues. The main downsides for me have been: The first month or so when I was adapting to this new lifestyle. Lyft & Uber still require a phone to request a ride (can't from laptop alone or watch alone, but can still call taxi services). Requires planning ahead. Can't hotspot my computer from my watch's cellular if no wifi. But most places have wifi these days, and can go to a cafe or hotel lobby in a pinch. Occasionally needing to ask for a physical menu at restaurants that use QR code digital menus. This obviously isn't for everyone, but I want anyone who's interested to know that it's totally doable. (For me) it legitimately does not feel like a sacrifice, like a fragile system, or like an inconvenience. I got my watch a year or two ago as a freebie from my health insurance company for meeting certain activity goals. (Bonus!) I was initially a grouchy, 55/M, 'watch skeptic' since I'm not trying to add unnecessary tech to my life. But, free? I'm not that grouchy! I think it's the coolest tech invention since the smartphone itself. I may be preaching to the choir here, but I know lots of folks who consider smartwatches silly and useless, or simply a flashy bauble to show on the wrist. The thing I love the most is that it enables me to keep my phone in my pocket and perform so many tasks which would normally require me to remove said phone, unlock it, then click on an app. Now these tasks are accomplished with a simple glance at my wrist. I don't use any other watch faces except the Modular one. I'm in this game for functionality. This is by far the most useful and you can add a shit-ton of apps (I refuse to use the term complication). No hate for those who love the many weird faces you can use, if that's your bag, enjoy! Note: I do have a couple psychedelic ones I will throw on if going out somewhere fun. I walk outdoors 8-9 miles daily, in Florida...year round. Having access to the weather, sunrise/sunset (with popup alerts for incoming rain, etc) is worth the cost of admission alone. I don't need Apples silly activity rings, so I added a 3rd party step counter app which works brilliantly. (Apple not having a step counter is f-ing WILD AF) Also - my iPhone interacts with the watch seamlessly which is especially amazing for driving as I can turn off the MAPS voice and just use the watch haptics to alert me to upcoming turns and exits. What can't this thing do? I'm no Apple loyalist FYI...my job provides my phone, and they like Apple so that's what I use, but I am a huge fan of well-designed technology which reduces the amount of time my phone is in my hand. It just randomly hit me today... we live in the future times that I dreamed about as a child of the 70's. I’ve downloaded a bunch of other ones and none of them are perfect for my needs. I love being able to see it all at a glance on my watch as opposed to reaching for my phone. Here’s what I like: • Digital clock - I’m lazy and want to see the exact time. • Date - Always like to know the date and day. • Messages - I love having my messages at the press of a button. • Activity - I don’t need details, but want to glance and see my progress. Good reminder to keep moving. • Workout - Being able to see on the screen Workout/Peloton is a reminder to me that I haven’t done it yet that day. Great to be able to easily open the app on my watch. • Weather - I like that I can not only see the current weather but the weather for the day. Not exaggerating here, my Apple Watch might be the reason I’m alive today. I thought I just had a lingering cold or maybe some weird COVID symptoms , mostly shortness of breath. Nothing crazy… until one evening after work. I was walking through an almost-empty parking lot on my way to my Jeep when things suddenly got worse. I felt lightheaded, dizzy, and seriously winded. I barely made it to the back of my vehicle before I blacked out. Next thing I know, I’m coming to, face-down on the pavement, and my Apple Watch is vibrating and flashing SOS. It had detected the hard fall and was automatically calling 911. In my dazed state, I actually stopped the call (don’t be like me 😅), but thankfully, 911 called me right back. I managed to tell them what happened and that I needed help. Within minutes, the fire department and ambulance were on the scene. They rushed me to the ER, where doctors discovered multiple large blood clots in my lungs, including one that was blocking oxygen to my heart. That’s why I collapsed. The ER doc told me later that if help hadn’t gotten to me so quickly, I had about a 50/50 chance of not making it. Here’s another excellent detail: my wife, who was 35 miles away, got an instant alert on her iPhone that I’d had a hard fall, thanks to being listed as an emergency contact in the Health app. She knew something was wrong and knew exactly where I was. So yeah. If you haven’t already: Turn on Fall Detection Add emergency contacts in the Health app Make sure your Medical ID is filled out You never think you’ll need this stuff until you really do. I have ADHD and I've always had a huge amount of trouble managing my life and taking care of myself. I would always survive the day haphazardly, but I couldn't really keep track of anything–– it was impossible to keep track of time, make sure I'm well rested, remember to take my meds, avoid becoming dehydrated, and have any consistent awareness of whether I'm properly active or way too sedentary. Now that I have this thing on my wrist all the time, I can absolutely do all of that without crap-shooting or guessing or forgetting, and it's just an incredible relief. Before the watch, I scraped by pretty well using iCal religiously (which I still do) and using timers constantly (like, almost every single moment of the day) to remember what I'm even supposed to be doing and how much time I have left before I need to switch tasks (or, like, to avoid being late to an appointment, etc.). But it was always really frustrating to have to make sure my stupid iPhone was in my pocket every single moment of the day–– whenever I needed to start a timer, check my existing timers, check my calendar, set/check an alarm, add something to my to-do list, or cross something off of it, I had to go find my phone, pick it up, unlock it, find the app I was looking for, add my thing, and then have the willpower to put it back in my pocket instead of doomscrolling or lollygagging on it. Now, I just talk to my wrist for one second (I turned off the "Listen for Siri/Hey Siri" feature and instead just hold down the crown to talk to Siri) and it's done. I can manage my calendar, the weather, my activity/steps, the time, my current timers, my hydration, my alarms (including tomorrow's wake-up alarm), last night's sleep, my texts, my calls, my emails (can't write emails on the watch lol but I can see the preview of every email and get each new notification), my meds, my countdowns, my battery, the notifications I set to pop up on the watch, and more, in one second, without any chance of falling down an ADHD rabbit hole like I would on my phone. It's just awesome. Here are some apps I highly recommend specifically for apple watch use: AntBrowser - a straight-up browser because apple doesn't give you a browser for some reason; this one's great, it's a one-time purchase (like $5 or something) that goes directly to the actual single person who created it literally because they just wanted it to exist. plus the app appears towards the top of your app menu because it starts with "A" lol Countdown - lets you set lots of countdowns with correlating emojis & set complications on the watch face AND on the stack for whichever events you want. well-designed and cute. also has cute widgets on the iPhone WaterLlama - for staying hydrated. functions beautifully on apple watch; pre-set your usual beverages and quantities on the iPhone app & then easily log them on the watch whenever you finish a drink. this helps me so much cuz it's not JUST about water; I log whenever I drink anything–– coffee, tea, etc.–– and it automatically takes into account how hydrating that particular beverage actually is, like how coffee/tea are slightly less hydrating than the equivalent amount of water. for another example, I'm sober, but if I hypothetically logged that I drank a glass of wine, it'd automatically take into account that wine is DEhydrating, and it'd tell me how much more I need to drink to reach my hydration goal for the day. kinda hard to explain but it's so awesome. also has iPhone widgets Pedometer++ - lets you view your steps progress as a complication or shortcut on the stack. also has iPhone widgets Spotify (duhr) - you can download playlists/albums/etc. from your watch directly ,or you can literally direct Spotify to download playlists/albums/etc. to your watch FROM your iPhone spotify app (I think in the "..." menu it pops up as "Download to apple watch"). of course you can stream Spotify without doing this but it saves data if you go on a walk and listen to music every day without your iPhone. EcoBee - if you have an EcoBee heater/AC/etc. device, it lets you see the current status of your selected device as a complication and manage it from the watch. also has iPhone widgets Citymapper - for getting around without a car! also has iphone widgets AnyList – amazing all-around app for lists, especially for totally integrated grocery list and meal planning and recipes, I use it every single day; it also works very well with Alexa, just say "Alexa, ask Anylist to add _____ to [name of list]" - siri will also cooperate but I think you have to say "Siri, in the AnyList app, add ____ to [name of list]" lol. also has iphone widgets MY APPLE WATCH SPECS: Model: Series 10, 42mm, jet black aluminium with cellular data I highly recommend getting cellular data; it lets me roam freely/safely in the world without my iphone. worth the extra cost and the extra cellular data charge which is about $10 a month. Also, jet black looks beautiful (I literally can't tell where the screen begins and the aluminium ends). and 42mm is perfect for my dainty wrist lol LK Screen protector to prevent scratches; the watch didn't get scratched before I added the protector–– in fact it seems very scratch-resistant–– but the protector gives me peace of mind and I literally can't even tell it's on there, it's totally invisible and flat and smooth. this photo of my watch makes it seem like it looks pixelated thru the screen protector, but that only manifests through the camera lens lol, it does not look pixelated at all in real life Lake Green Sport Loop - very comfortable for daily wear, day and night Watch face: INFOGRAPH (my favorite watch face cuz it lets you do the most complications!!) My complications (clockwise starting at top left): iCal - I can click it to open the app and see/edit my whole calendar TimeGlance - HIGHLY recommend this app - it adds a complication that is just the current digital time; you can do 24H, add AM/PM, etc. & you can customize the color of the time itself & the optional progress bar underneath Weather / Temperature - daily low/high + current temp, plus I can click Next Alarm - I can click it to open the app and adjust my morning alarm Timer - when I set a timer, or multiple timers, it shows the minutes+seconds countdown to the most-nearly-done timer. Plus, if you set it using siri and tell it what to call the timer, the timer app will show you what each timer's for. We were at my place alone and I noticed his phone set up in the bathroom with the camera facing the toilet. It wasn’t recording or anything so I was hoping he just forgot it there. Then he tried it again in my bedroom to see me get dressed for work. When I grabbed the phone it was on the camera and then it quickly went to the Home Screen. So I knew he was watching through his Apple Watch. I’m not sure if he was necessarily recording or just watching. My boyfriend and I called him a couple days later and he admitted it. I recorded part of the conversation. In the video you can hear him say “I was being pervy. I was being gross” and him apologizing. People keep telling me to take legal action but do you think I have enough evidence to do anything? I don’t know if I necessarily want him to go to jail or anything but I want to at least sue him…cause this shit has really fucked me up.. UPDATE: I took everyone’s advice and went to the police. I hesitated taking it that far cause I honestly didn’t feel like dealing with all of it. That’s why I brought up the option of suing because I thought it would be a way for him to get consequences without jail. Not necessarily cause I just want money from all this. But that would be a selfish decision on my part because if he just walks free then he will do it to someone else. If he’s capable of doing this to someone he’s considered a close friend for 4 years, why wouldn’t he do this to someone else? He’s been close with my boyfriend for even longer. Since kindergarten… and this has been affecting him as well. As much as it sucks to do this to someone who was our friend, it must be done… I gave my statement and sent them the video of him admitting it. They said a judge will go over everything and decide if it fits the criteria of the crime. If it does, there will be a warrant out for his arrest. ANOTHER UPDATE: So they told me that the video was not enough evidence because he didn’t straight up admit what he did. So they brought him in for questioning. I called for an update a few days later and they said they are going through with the charges. I don’t know if that means he confessed or what. The person on the phone with me didn’t know all the details. So now he has to appear in court and they will let me know if they need me to go as well. That’s the last thing I’ve heard! UPDATE 9 months later: He is being charged with two felony counts of video voyerism (auto correct won’t help me with this one 💀) which he plead not guilty to. And I now have a no contact order against him. He has had several court dates but every time he goes, they seem to just schedule another one so it’s definitely going to be a long process.
