Free workout apps for women that aren't just cardio and 3lb dumbbells
I'm so tired of downloading a fitness app marketed toward women and the entire program library is tone your arms in 10 minutes with pink branding. Some of us actually want to squat, bench and deadlift without being funneled into 30 day booty challenges. I've been using Boostcamp, great free workout app for women even if it isn't gendered at all, to me that's kind of the point. It has real strength programs like GZCLP, Reddit PPL and Jeff Nippard's stuff that work regardless of whether you're a man or a woman. Progressive overload doesn't care about your gender and I wish more apps understood that. The other option I've heard good things about is Hevy. Similar deal, it's just a solid tracker without the condescending "women's fitness" packaging. Strong is good too but the free version is more restricted and I'm getting tired of every god damn app limiting even basic features with a paywall If you're someone who actually wants to get stronger and not just lean and toned (whatever that means), skip anything that markets itself specifically as a women's workout app. The best programs are gender neutral and the best apps just give you access to those programs for free without trying to water them down. submitted by /u/shy_guy997 to r/femalebodybuilding [link] [comments]

Paddle Boarding: Why It’s a Good Workout for Caribbean Women and Where to Do It🌺🏄‍♀️
Paddle boarding is one of those workouts that fits naturally into Caribbean life. It builds core strength, improves balance, and works your arms and legs without putting pressure on your joints. Because you’re standing and moving at your own pace, it feels more like controlled movement than exercise. The fun part is that you’re active while still enjoying warm water, open skies, and familiar coastlines. What makes paddle boarding especially appealing for Caribbean women is how accessible it is. Calm seas, sheltered bays, and lagoons mean you don’t need extreme conditions or advanced skill. Early mornings often bring flat water and cooler temperatures, making it easy to turn a paddle into a regular wellness habit rather than a one‑off activity. In Jamaica, paddle boarding is best in Port Antonio Bay, where the water stays calm and protected by surrounding land. The bay allows for smooth, steady paddling without strong currents. Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, especially closer to shore in the mornings, also offers long, manageable stretches of water suitable for relaxed paddling. Belize is ideal for lagoon paddle boarding, particularly in Placencia Lagoon. This body of water is shallow and shielded from open sea conditions, making it one of the easiest places to maintain balance and paddle for longer periods. The calm surface makes it popular for beginners and steady fitness paddles alike. Along the west coast of Barbados, Paynes Bay is a reliable paddle boarding spot. This side of the island is known for calmer seas compared to the east coast. Morning paddles here offer smooth water and clear visibility, making it a practical choice for regular sessions. In Saint Lucia, Marigot Bay is one of the most paddle‑friendly locations. The bay’s curved shape blocks wind and waves, keeping the water flat for most of the day. It’s well suited for controlled paddling and works well if you prefer staying within a defined area rather than open water. Antigua and Barbuda offers several sheltered options, with Dickenson Bay being one of the most accessible. The bay’s shallow depth and predictable conditions make it suitable for steady paddling, especially before midday winds increase. The Bahamas, a CARICOM country, is well known for paddle boarding in Nassau Harbour and the shallow waters of the Exumas. The clear, turquoise water makes balancing easier, and the lack of strong currents allows for relaxed, longer paddles that don’t feel demanding. Paddle boarding across CARICOM countries is less about pushing limits and more about moving well in calm water. Do you prefer paddling in open bays or protected lagoons where the water stays flat? submitted by /u/Interesting_Taste637 to r/TropicalFeminity [link] [comments]

chest workouts for women
i've been weight training consistently for almost a year now and i recently got some headshots done in a sports bra and i noticed that my pecs look muscular and i'm not sure as a woman if i like that.... so i'm cutting out chest presses but i'm wondering if i should continue doing push ups for my arms even if i don't want my chest to grow. what do you guys think? i'm kind of curious to hear what women have to say on this and if y'all still train your chest and if so why? my main goal for weight training is to be and look stronger but idk if i necessarily need a strong chest. i'm a dancer so strong arms and legs is what's most important to me, i also want to loose the flab underneath my arms. initially i wanted to do chest workouts to make my boobs smaller but i don't think that's actually possible lol. submitted by /u/chronicbingewatcher to r/bodyweightfitness [link] [comments]

Update post: not losing weight eating 1400 calories and working out like crazy
hi, I posted last week that I had been working out for a month and eating an average of 1400 cal. I was doing a lot of cardio, around 6-9 hours of fast incline walk and stairs per week, plus 1-3 hours of weights. my watch estimated I burned 1900 cal per day, but my body was swollen and I wasn’t losing any weight. I was also working 6 hours a day as a pizza chef. my scale fluctuated between 142-145 for the entire month of January. for context, I’m a 5’4 female, 36, and have been extremely athletic for most of my life prior to this weight gain so the update I wanted to post was that I stopped working out for a week and ate around the same amount of cal, 1200-1400 per day, and I “lost” 8 lbs. today I woke up at 137 and 26%bf. you really don’t have to starve yourself. inflammation from the workouts can hide progress. this is changing my relationship with working out and diet. you can live a normal life and get pretty shredded. I just wanted to share my experience, for any women who think they have to eat almost nothing to get the body they want. you don’t. enjoy life. dong listen, just stay the course. EDIT: Here's my workout if anyone wants, this one should only be done a max of 3x per week Warm-up (0–10 min) Treadmill: 3.5 → 5.5 mph, incline 3–5%, 5 minutes continuous. Dynamic circuit x2 rounds: • Air squats x10 (bodyweight) • Push-ups x10 • Walking lunges x10 steps (bodyweight) • Arm swings x20 Strength Circuit (10–30 min) – 4 rounds Barbell deadlift: 95–135 lb, 6–8 reps, controlled reset each rep. Walking lunges: 20–35 lb dumbbells, 20 total steps, slow and steady. Push-ups: 20 reps. Rest 90 seconds between rounds. Roman Chair + Core (30–40 min) – 3 rounds Roman chair back extensions: bodyweight or 10–25 lb plate, 15 reps. Hanging knee raises: 12–15 reps, slow, no swing. Flutter kicks: 40 total reps. Rest 60 seconds. Conditioning Block (40–50 min) Option A – Stair climber: Level 8–12 hard for 2 min, level 4–5 easy for 1 min, 3 rounds. Option B – Treadmill: 400 m at 7.0–8.5 mph, then 200 m at 3.5–4.0 mph, 3 rounds. Finisher (50–58 min) – 2 rounds Goblet squats: 35–55 lb, 15 reps. Walking lunges: bodyweight or 20 lb dumbbells, 20 steps. Mountain climbers: 40 reps. Rest 60 seconds between rounds. Cool Down (58–60 min) Walk 2 minutes at 2.5–3.0 mph. Standard workout programming doesn't work the same for shorter women with different proportions, it's not a strength issue
I'm 5'1 and I've been lifting for about a year now. I keep seeing form videos and reading programs that give these universal cues that just do not translate to my body at all. Like deadlifts, everyone says the bar should travel close to your shins and thighs. But when I do that my back rounds because my torso is proportionally shorter. Or overhead press where they say keep the bar path straight, but my arms are shorter so the angle is totally different and I end up arching my back trying to follow that cue. Bench press is another one, standard grip width puts my elbows in a weird position that doesn't feel right at all. It's frustrating because I know I'm doing the movements wrong but following the standard advice makes it worse. I started working with ray recently and it's been helpful getting form adjustments that can account for my proportions but I’m so annoyed that it takes ai help to get workout more adjusted to my needs. Shouldn’t it be normal that gym influencers and coaches acknowledge everyone body is different? I see so many petite women struggling with the same exercises and getting told they just need to get stronger when really the cuing is just not designed for our body types. Would love to hear what exercises you've had to modify or what cues work for shorter frames. submitted by /u/Dull_Noise_8952 to r/PetiteFitness [link] [comments]

Even if you get all the signals, it might not be what it seems - My Gym crush experience
So I used to visit a gym very routinely with my best friend. In this gym was an extremely attractive physical trainer. She was in her 20s (my age), and in my eyes, she was drop-dead gorgeous, even though my friend thought she was not that pretty. Something about her face I was insanely attracted to, and at this time I was single. I never hit on her, or went out of my way to speak with her, as I thought she was way out of my league. However, my friend noticed something that I started noticing more and more. She was clearly checking me out and staring at me during my workouts, and it was blatantly obvious. I keep to myself in the gym, wear glasses (not during workout), and look down. But after my friend pointed this out, I would catch her staring at me through the gym mirror as I'm mid-set. (edit, forgot to add, she'd even wave at me as I'm mid set if our eyes met, multiple times in one day, but usually it was pretty dead in the gym) When I'd meet her gaze, she'd smile and look away, but sometimes I'd quickly glance and notice she's looking directly at me, so I'd purposefully not look at her so she could stare at me longer (IK cringe lol). I loved this attention, it motivated me so much. Then after about a month we started talking a lot. She'd interrupt me mid workout and ask how my day is going, comment on my form, talk about random things in the news. Even when me and my friend are mid conversation, if she'd walk by, she'd interrupt and say "hi runpatrun7878" with a beautiful smile. I still thought she was out of my league until she physically touched my arm, almost grabbed my shoulder with a light squeeze to feel my muscle. My friend thought it was "obvious af" that she was into me, and he convinced me so. So I got the courage to ask her out, I went into her office while she was alone and asked if she wanted to go out sometime for a coffee or a drink. She politely and respectfully declined and said she had a boyfriend. So I must've misinterpreted her signals, as maybe she clearly just wanted to be friends, or wanted me to hire her as my personal trainer. Some women are just naturally flirty I suppose! But shooting my shot was 100% worth it. I'd way rather be rejected than wonder "what if" for the rest of my life! submitted by /u/runpatrun7878 to r/bodylanguage [link] [comments]

I feel like I was very ill-informed to how awful you will feel right after giving birth.
For reference I gave birth 4 days ago. Vaginal delivery with an epidural and pitocin - 1 second degree tear. I can’t walk. Stand. Sit. Move. Everything hurts so bad. Peeing hurts even with a peri bottle. Showering seems impossible. Let’s not even talk about pooping. My legs and arms are so beyond sore..like after a hard workout - half because I spent the majority of my 24 hour delivery in bed not moving and half because when I pushed I was gripping the back of my legs so hard it put so much strain on my inner arms and thighs. Because I was pumped with so much fluid my ankles and feet are balloons. And trying to keep them elevated as much as possible is hard when taking care of a fresh newborn. And my milk is coming in. So I feel like I’m getting the flu. I have the shakes, shivering, I’m hot sometimes and cold sometimes. I truly truly feel like I’ve been run over by a truck. And I guess because I had such an uneventful pregnancy that went so beautifully well with no complications or pain I’m just in shock at how awful I’m feeling. Then there’s the biggest symptom which is the guilt. I feel so guilty I’ve let my mom and husband take over 95% of my time home with my newborn. I can’t physically take care of him in this state. I feel awful. Like he’s not bonding with me or will forget who I am. Not much else to say I guess I just wanted to rant because I know so many women close to me who have given birth and either they were too scared to warn me or they just didn’t go through this. submitted by /u/InterestingTeach822 to r/pregnant [link] [comments]

AITA for shutting someone down when they tried to talk to me at the gym?
So, for context, I (F32) don’t talk to anyone at my gym outside of saying hi and bye to the people who work there, and having polite etiquette when asking someone if they’re using something/saying thank you when they’re done. This is partially for efficiency, but mostly because I go to the gym stoned AF and I’m in my zone and I don’t want to talk to anyone. Last week, after my work out, I walked over to the food carts by my gym to pick up tacos. While I was there, some guy (M40+) stopped me and said he went to the same gym. I had never noticed him before but he like insisted on walking with me and was talking to me. I was kind of annoyed — just because you see me on the street with my headphones out doesn’t mean it’s an invitation to talk to me. I made small talk and tried to be polite. Got out as quick as I could. So the other day, when I’m at the gym foam rolling out with my headphones in, this guy just beelines to me while I’m trying to avoid eye contact, and squats down next to me to say hi and give me a fist bump. I give him a quick heads up acknowledge him but ignore the fist bump. Avoid eye contact the rest of the time I’m there. And then today, this guy comes into the gym and sees me. I immediately avoid eye contact and he doesn’t come up to me, so I think he gets the picture. But then, when I’m doing leg lifts, he comes over and tries to give me a fist bump. So I take out my headphone and I say “Look man, I don’t want to do this. I’m here to work out, I’m not here to make friends. I don’t want to talk to you, okay.” And he starts to say “I was just saying hi.” And I respond with “Yeah, I get it. Please don’t.” And put my headphone back in and kept working out. I realize anyone who saw this probably thought I was a giant AH. But, I don’t think someone’s need for connection overrides my need to have a good workout. So, AITAH? UPDATE: For people saying this would have been different if he was an attractive guy. I stumble and get awkward no matter who it is if the conversation needs to go beyond more than a single question and response. Men, women, children. This isn’t a “want it” or “don’t want it” situation as much as it’s a “I’m not in a headspace where I can have human conversation.” For people saying this is the same type of person who wonders why guys don’t ask them out: I keep a little post it note in my gym bag that says “Hi, my name is (name). I think you’re cute, but I want to respect your gym time. Text me if you want to get coffee sometime.” I’ve never given it to anyone, but it’s there if I ever feel like I need it. Anyway, I’m at work. Hope everyone has a great day! FINAL UPDATE: Wow. While I figured posting this might be a little divisive, I didn’t expect it to blow up like this. I went to the gym today and had one of the best workouts I’ve had in a long time — partly because I was fueled by the overwhelming support I received from people who understood the importance of asserting boundaries. So thank you to everyone who saw where I was coming from. For anyone who still thinks I’m the AH — I can live with that. But before I go, I want to share something that happened to me a couple of months ago. Maybe it’ll give you something to chew on. I was at the same gym, in the middle of isolated bicep curls. End of the rep, second-to-last set to failure. I was slowing the movement, fully concentrated, eyes closed. When I opened them — a stranger’s face was three inches from mine. Startled, I set the weight down and looked over to see a plump, middle-aged man in a baseball cap. I took out one of my headphones, still in shock, and all I could say was, “What the f***?!” He then grabbed my arms and forced them back onto the machine’s handles, saying “One more!” I pulled away and snapped, “Who the f*** do you think you are?” His face fell as he muttered, “I was just admiring your work.” I told him, “I’m in the middle of a f*ing set.” He got defensive, saying, “Actually, I wanted to use that.” I replied, “You can use it when I’m not in the middle of a set.” He rolled his eyes and walked off. I was left shaking. As I started to put my headphone back in, another man approached and waved. I took it back out, and he said, “You really shouldn’t have to put up with that.” I smiled and said thanks. He walked away. I got back to my set. ⸻ Now here’s what I’ll say: Baseball Cap Guy was way more out of line than the guy who approached me at the food carts — even by the third time, when I finally snapped at him. I reported that incident to the gym manager. They took it seriously, walked through the whole event with me, and I gave the best description I could. I haven’t seen that man since. Whether he was banned or just stopped showing up, I don’t know. As for the guy from the food carts — he hasn’t approached me again. We’ve been in the same space at the gym a couple times, but I’m very good at pretending people don’t exist during workouts. I appreciate that he respected my boundaries. I see no reason to report him. ⸻ But here’s what I want to leave you with: The man who approached me right after that first incident — the one who said I shouldn’t have to put up with it — Why did he say that to me, instead of to him? Why is it easier to comfort a woman in distress than it is to call out the man who caused it? I do think he meant well. I appreciated it in the moment. But I still have to ask: When given the choice between verbally comforting a woman and actually intervening — Why do so many men choose comfort over protection? Why is it harder to confront predatory behavior than it is to empathize with its aftermath? That’s all I have to say. This will be my final update. submitted by /u/iamplayingfavorites to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Women in PT, how do deal with comments... Saying I don't look like I workout especially if wear loose fit clothes.
🤍🥺 thanks for all the comments. I have tutoring clients and work other gigs, but it's literally my first ever training job and I haven't been an employee in 3 years. I haven't questioned myself ever in a while. I am not used to coworker dynamic and never really handled it well. Everyone's knowledge is welcomed and appreciated. Hi! Sorry for typo above... How to* Just any stories, comebacks or ways to talk around it in general? Look I don't want to always wear tight pants or shirts...and/or afford to get complete new set of clothes right now. Of course I'm bulking, but again it's slow bulk and I personally don't really want to change much other than gain more muscle in my arms cuz those tend to be seen more. I know PT is about your looks. I also realize even if I gain arm muscles. It won't look the same as the guys at the gym. Idk... I'm petite and everything gets hidden fast in my clothing. People constantly say I'm skinny when I do train. I started working at a big box gym. A lot of the men younger coworkers actually, make jokes that I don't workout. Idk what to do or say back. I wanna joke back, but my first thought is have you ever gotten laid? Do you realize women else the most fit women tend to have a hard time having huge arms or thigh muscles. I think I should bring up to the manager because I don't really know if it's something these other PT's believe. Even the most fit women in the group have so much muscle build. They even made jokes at her and she's fit! I know I have a higher fat percentage than athletic level. I personally like how I look too! I want to keep that fat personally. But I've seen people in our body comp scans and of course you will see people that around lean or "fit" end up having really good growth on their arms. Their lean muscle mass to fat is great! I would never have known by appearance! I implore men to go on xxfitness. Women who go to the gym and diet for months to years, will have less muscle growth and fat loss than a man does. It's biology. Its the second time a comment was made, this time to me and another time to my manager!! Yes the same manager who is fit af! I just don't know how to roll with it professionally. If this was like in the street I would call them out and explain how many have different body compositions and sometimes it's not healthy to be such low BF to show those muscles and abs. ... I've lost my period overtraining and cutting to the point I had a few percentage far off. The amount of work it took was not sustainable year around. I don't wanna look lean like that. I like my the fat in my curves. The muscles underneath fill me out and give me a better shape 💀 submitted by /u/Live-Pangolin-7657 to r/personaltraining [link] [comments]

SEXUAL ASSAULT BY INSTRUCTOR DURING CLASS?
Yesterday, when I was in a class with a new (to me) male instructor, he assaulted me during class in front of everyone. Normally, we are asked if everyone is comfortable with hands-on corrections. He did not ask us. It was a 9:30 AM Center & Balance class and he had us lower the springs on the wall to 5 and stand facing the wall. We were instructed to put a slight bend in our knees and pull the springs out to our thighs on either side. He then explained that we should push our butt out as we pull back. Sure. Fine. But then he comes up behind me, grabs both wrists forcefully and pull my arms back, while he steps in close and did a full body press - his front body to my back body with his groin pressed firmly against my butt. He then tells me to push my butt back (meaning into his groin). I am a SA survivor and this was very triggering. I froze and completely dissociated. I didn’t push back against him, but I also didn’t say anything. I froze. A few minutes later, we were back on the reformers with our backs on the carriages, and he moved to the girl next to me and stood on the other side of her foot bar, between her feet, and pressed his hands against the insides of her bare knees and pushed them out wide like a full gynecological exam while she was in short shorts. I left the studio crying. I called for an emergency appointment with my therapist. I shared my experience with a friend that attended an earlier class with me with that same instructor. (I did two classes back to back yesterday with the same instructor. She attended the first class with me; he assaulted me in the second.) She also explained that she left after the first class very upset because he grabbed her stomach roll while she was on the Bosu and it made her very uncomfortable. So today I returned to the studio to explain what happened. I asked to speak to the manager. I was assured by the man working at the desk that they did still have the recording from yesterday’s classes on tape. I tearfully explained what happened and the manager assured me it would be handled and that he was going to contact the owners. I left the studio. Now, just a few hours later, he called me back and said the instructor would be “doing some training with corporate,” so it sounds like he isn’t going anywhere. I’m asking you - would this satisfy you? How do I prevent this man from hurting someone else? And how do I keep this from ruining Pilates for me when they’re the only studio within an hour of my house? And now my workout schedule is dictated by when he isn’t working? Please make me feel better about all of this. What would you do? I am so thankful to my friends who assured me this is NOT nothing and that he was completely out of line. Women are often programmed to discount our own discomfort. submitted by /u/ArrowMcD to r/ClubPilates [link] [comments]

Why are women’s workout clothes revealing compared to men's?
Why is it that generally, women's workout clothes are more revealing than men's? For pants, women usually wear tight leggings or booty shorts as opposed to men's usual knee-length shorts. For shirt, most men that I've seen working out oversized t shirt, slightly fitting nylon running t shirt, or sleeveless tank top that just shows the arms at most. Unless they're bodybuilders not a lot of men wear those tanks with droopy armhole. Meanwhile, some women will just go shirtless and only wear sports bra to workout. I understand that the exposed skin helps with the ventilation, but why don't we see men work out topless as well if that is the case? I'm not complaining on what women should or shouldn't wear btw, just curious submitted by /u/Final_Biochemist222 to r/answers [link] [comments]

I was told I had to wear a bra so I did
This happened last week. I was swimming laps at an indoor pool near my house. I’m a woman who has had a double mastectomy without reconstruction. My chest is flat. I’m totally comfortable with how I look but prefer for my scars to be covered in public. As far as swimming goes women’s suits have extra material to accommodate typical chests so when I wear them they’re baggy. For backyard swimming I just use a couple safety pins to keep it in place. For lap swimming it balloons open like a parachute full of water and creates so much drag that it’s difficult to swim. Tight competition swim suits don’t have enough coverage for the way the scars wrap around my sides under my arms. To get around this I wear running shorts and a tight fitting full coverage synthetic fabric dark colored tank top. It works great. Last week I was approached as I left the pool facility by a worker. He said that they had received a complaint that a woman in the pool was wearing a shirt, which is allowed, but no sports bra underneath. He then said their policy requires women who are not in swim suits to have sports bras under their shirt. He told me that the policy started when they had a problem where a woman would come in to swim and only wear a thin white shirt and no bra in the pool during family swim hours. I explained politely that I’ve had a double mastectomy and do not need a bra. I said that swimsuits don’t fit me and my top is very dark and not see through plus even if it was see through all anyone would see are scars. He said he understood and felt bad but the management requires that the dress code be followed. I explained how I was much more covered up than anyone else in the pool and in fact was wearing exactly what he was minus the whistle - he was in shorts and a tank top. There were guys in there with just tight fitting swim bottoms on and women in bikinis. I look Amish next to them. He again said he was sorry but couldn’t make an exception to the rules. I asked for the rules in writing and he gave me a printout which did say what he was telling me. This brings us to yesterday. I dug a sports bra out of a bin of old clothes and brought it with me. I wore the same shorts and top otherwise. When I got in the water I put the band of the bra around my head with the straps sticking up like bunny ears. People in the other lanes got a kick out of it once I explained what I was doing. I started warming up with my kickboard thinking the guy would come over and we would sort this nonsense out. Well, a lady in business clothes comes over and tells me I need to take the bra off my head. I would like to say here that this was adult lap swim, there were no kids in the pool area. I explained it all to her and said I was following the rule to the letter. I was wearing a bra which is all that is required. We went back and forth with her saying I knew it had to be worn ‘normally’. I said I couldn’t wear it the way others do because I don’t have anything to fill it and it would ride up to my chin while swimming without anything to hold it in place. She said I could use skin safe glue! Yeah, no. I’m not going to glue unnecessary garments to my body and I told her as much. I finally said that unless she could state the rule I was breaking that I would like to continue with my workout so I could get home to my kids and let the babysitter go home. She walked away. I swam for an hour with that bra perched on my head (lots of readjusting it and once retrieving it from the bottom of the pool) then showered and went home. This morning I checked my email, which is linked to my membership at the aquatic center, to find a message from her. They will not be changing their policies but I have been granted a special exception to the rule provided I wear continue to wear non see through tops. I wish they would have just gotten rid of the silly bra rule but I’ll take this and if I ever see another woman struggling with their swimsuit over a flat chest I’ll let them know they can wear something more comfortable. TLDR: I’ve had a double mastectomy and was told I had to wear a sports bra in the pool so I wore it on my head. Edit: thank you very much for the gold and award! Another edit: whoa! I just finished getting my kids ready and checked Reddit. Thank you so much for the upvotes and awards. I was hesitant to post this but now I’m so glad I did. Yet another: I can’t believe how this blew up. I have tears in my eyes reading the wonderful supportive comments. Thank you, truly, you’ve made me feel amazing. I will always keep my elastic tiara in my swim bag just in case. submitted by /u/graywoman7 to r/MaliciousCompliance [link] [comments]

Beginner's Guide to Working Out
As a personal trainer, I wanted to take the time to answer some of the most frequently asked questions by people who are new to working out. Feel free to let me know if I've missed anything! How do I lose weight? It’s actually way simpler than you might think: maintain a caloric deficit. Consume fewer calories than you burn. It doesn’t matter of you’re morbidly obese or you’re cutting for a show, this basic principal still applies. Note that eating a healthy diet makes this far easier - lots of fruits, veggies, lean protein and water will help you stay satiated for far fewer calories than fatty junk foods (not to mention you’ll have way more energy, and just feel better). To find out how many calories you should be eating in a day to lose weight, you have a few different options. The first is to determine your maintenance calories with an online calculator, then subtract 250-500 per day from that (to lose about 0.5-1lbs per week). The other option (my personal favourite, because everyone is different!) is to start by just honestly tallying up how much you’re currently eating each day. Once that’s determined, start by subtracting 250-500 calories per day. If you haven’t lost any weight in a couple weeks, subtract that amount again, until you start seeing progress. There’s tons of food tracking apps out there, but I recommend MyFitnessPal - it’s free, easy to use, you can scan food labels, and the food database included is enormous. Another important note - increasing the amount of calories you burn per day (ie. exercising) will also help you stay in a caloric deficit. However, it’s best NOT to rely solely on this method. Doing a whole hour of cardio will only burn a few hundred calories (plus will likely make you hungry for snacks by the time you’re finished) … or, you can simply avoid eating a bag of chips or a piece of pizza, to have the exact same effect. That’s not to imply that exercise isn’t important in your weight loss journey - quite the contrary! However, instead of focusing on doing hours of cardio a day, this should only be used to supplement your diet (1-2 hours a week is fine for most people). Your focus should instead be on resistance training. Lifting heavy weights 2-4 times per week plays the important role of ensuring you maintain your muscle mass as you lose weight. Want to avoid that “skinny fat” look, and get “toned” instead? Make sure you’re doing resistance training! How do I lose weight in ___ area? Unfortunately, spot reduction is a myth. Where you lose weight first (and last) is determined by genetics. However, you *will* eventually lose weight in all your problem areas. You just need to be patient, and keep doing what helped you start losing weight in the first place. The good news is, the more weight you lose, the more visible the progress will be (especially if you’re doing a good job focusing on just fat loss, while retaining muscle). Going from 250-240lbs probably won’t be noticeable, but losing those last 10lbs will make a huge difference (since a few pounds will make up a far greater percentage of your total body mass). So the progress will be hard-fought for, but definitely worth it! How do I gain muscle? It’s a combination of progressively harder resistance training, eating enough food, and lots of patience. When you’re exercising, just going through the motions isn’t good enough. For optimal muscle gain, you should be performing each set with a weight that you can lift continuously for around 30-60s (this should amount to around 8-15 repetitions). If you feel like you can go for longer, choose a heavier weight. Perform each repetition slowly (about 1 second concentric, pause, 2-3 seconds eccentric, pause), through a full range of motion. To clarify - the concentric portion of a lift is when you’re moving against gravity, and the eccentric portion is when you’re moving with gravity. Exercises involving long static holds (like planks) are great for endurance, but they won’t amount to much muscle mass gained. I cannot overemphasize how important good form is either - for avoiding injury, hardwiring the correct neural pathways, and maximizing muscle gain. Especially when you’re just starting out, choose light weights, and make sure optimal form comes naturally before you start increasing the intensity. It’s way easier learning it correctly the first time than fixing bad habits later. How much food should you be eating? It varies widely between people. Start with your maintenance calories, add a couple hundred to that (it doesn’t have to be a lot!), and measure your results. Be patient with your progress - men can expect to gain 1-2lbs of lean muscle a month, and 0.5-1lbs for women (beginners may gain a little faster). Eating enough protein is also vital to gaining muscle - a general rule of thumb is around 1 gram of protein (each day) per pound of lean body weight (ie. how much you weigh, minus the amount of fat you have). How do I get stronger? It honestly depends on your experience level. If you’re just starting out, doing a normal resistance routine focused on gaining muscle will make you stronger. However, if you’ve been working out regularly for awhile (close to a year), using heavier weights (1-6 reps max) will help you get stronger a lot faster. If you’re focusing more purely on strength gain, it’s important that each repetition is done as perfectly as possible (even moreso than for other training goals). That means stopping 1-2 reps shy of failure. Doing just one sloppy rep can severely impact your strength output for the rest of the workout. Don’t be afraid of taking longer rests between sets either (up to 2-3 minutes), as you want to be ready with as much energy as possible before you start your next set. It also goes without saying that heavier weight = greater chance for injury, and proper form will help prevent that. Is it possible to lose fat and build muscle at the same time? Contrary to popular belief - yes. Especially if you’re a beginner! Just make sure you’re eating around maintenance level calories (along with enough protein), doing resistance training 3-4 times a week, and you’ll start seeing body composition changes. However, if you’re significantly over/underweight, or have already been working out for some time, you’ll see much faster progress if you focus on one goal at a time. The main difference here is going to be diet - eating less if you’re trying to lose weight, or eating more if you’re trying to gain weight. Regular resistance training plays a part in both shedding fat and gaining muscle. How should I be structuring my workouts? For the vast majority of people, full body workouts with compound exercises is the way to go. (For those who don’t know, compound exercises are those which use more than one joint at a time - think squats, bench press, rows, etc.) The popular back/chest/shoulders/arms/legs split routine (or any variation of it) is good for advanced bodybuilders, but not ideal for beginners. Bodybuilders exercise like this because they need a much greater stimulus to properly stress any given muscle group, and more rest between days training that muscle group as a result of their increased workout intensity. For a beginner, it’s better to hit each muscle group multiple times a week (this is great to hasten learning and growth). You won’t need as long of a rest period before training the same muscle again, because it won’t be as fatigued after each workout. Compound exercises give you the greatest bang for your buck because you’re working out so many muscles in one movement (and burning way more calories at the same time). Isolation exercises (those working one joint at a time, like bicep curls or leg extensions) are best for bodybuilders who really need to hone in on a single muscle. Doing resistance training 3-4 times a week is a good goal to shoot for. Workouts should be around 45-60 minutes, with around 6-8 exercises done during that time. Try to keep rests between sets to around 60s (this is all very generalized, and can change depending on experience level and goal). Space rest days evenly between workouts if you can. Start your workouts with the exercises which require the most energy (usually those which involve lifting the most weight), saving any isolation/ab exercises for the end. If you’d like some help planning your workout routine, I just released a fitness app called PerfectFit. It gives you access to workouts designed by a personal trainer, all customized according to your unique goals, fitness level, and available equipment. There are tons of bodyweight exercises included - ideal for anyone working out at home! The app is currently available to download on Android, and iOS is hopefully just a few days away (currently under review). What should I be eating? If your goal is a change in body composition (gaining muscle/losing fat), the amount of calories you’re consuming is the most important thing to pay attention to. If you’re consistently working out hard but failing to gain/lose weight, chances are you need to make alterations to your diet. For weight loss, that usually means eating at a deficit of 250-500 calories per day; for weight gain, eating at a surplus of 200-300 calories per day. What exact foods you’re eating has an impact on how easily you can stick to your calorie goals, as well as your energy levels. Consuming around 1 gram of protein per pound of lean bodyweight (per day) is a given, regardless of what your fitness goal is. This helps to maintain satiety, and preserve/increase muscle mass. Eating lots of fruits and veggies (as well as drinking 2-3L of water a day - more for some people) is a great way to feel full without consuming too many calories. It also just contributes to all-around health and energy levels. Eating lots of fatty foods should be avoided if weight loss is the goal - not because fat makes you fat per se, but because they are so calorically dense. Only one tablespoon of peanut butter or olive oil is 100 calories! Conversely, if your goal is to gain weight, adding more fatty foods to your diet (healthy fats, if possible) can help you hit that calorie goal easier. And carbs? Not as evil as people make them out to be. Think of them as the energy that fuels your brain and your workouts. Having around 50% of your calories coming from carbs is about the norm. It’s likely beneficial to raise this number even higher if you’re an especially lean individual, or you’re regularly working out at intense levels. When should I be eating? The easiest way to time your meals properly is to think: “What will I be doing in the next 2-3 hours?” Eat according to the activity you’re about to do. That doesn’t mean you should be having a giant meal right before your workout, but ideally your biggest meal of the day would be several hours before you exercise. This will give you the energy you need, plus ensure the calories you consume are shuttled into your muscles instead of fat reserves. If you’re about to do an intense workout, the best thing to eat beforehand (around 15-30 minutes prior) is a light snack of healthy carbs (like some fruit). For optimal recovery, aim for 20-30g of protein within an hour after you workout (if you miss this window though don’t worry about it). A protein shake is probably the simplest and most convenient way of doing this, but whole food is just as good. What supplements should I be taking? If you have a healthy, well-rounded diet, including 2-3 cups of different veggies each day, enough protein per pound of bodyweight (from sources that include sufficient amounts of each essential amino acid), and adequate omega-3 fatty acids - then you’re golden, and probably don’t need any supplements. However, the vast majority of the population would probably benefit from a simple multivitamin and omega-3 supplement, just to help fill any nutritional gaps they have. If you’re getting enough protein from whole food, then you probably don’t need to add protein powder. However, if you’re struggling with this, then protein powder is a great way to easily increase your daily protein intake. Whey protein is the most bioavailable and has a complete amino acid profile, so it’s the best choice for most people. However, if you’re vegan (or lactose intolerant), there are lots of plant proteins available. You just need to pay attention to the amino acid profile of each one (possibly mixing and matching different plant sources if you need to). As for all the other supplements out there, it’s honestly on a case-by-case basis as to whether they’d actually help you or not. If you’re a beginner, unless you have any specific requirements or deficits, you probably don’t need them. Is stretching important? Yes. Please stretch (or do some other form of myofascial release, such as foam rolling), or you’ll eventually regret it. Regular exercise makes your muscles slowly form clumps of tissue and fascia. Neglecting to release these can result in restricted range of motion, and eventually pain. Static stretching should be done at the end of your workout. Aim to stretch each worked muscle near its end range of motion for around 60s total. Don’t stretch before your workout, as this can impede strength output. Is warming up important? Yes. Warming up is paramount to increasing blood flow and activating your muscles properly before you move onto more intense, metabolically demanding exercises. Ideally, during your warm-up, you should be actively moving your muscles through the same ranges of motion you’ll be doing for your workout. This can be as simple as doing the exact same movement, but with minimal weight - for example, doing a few sets of bodyweight squats before doing barbell squats. You want your warm-ups to elevate your heart rate, but not be so intense that they start tiring you out and detract from your workout. Usually 5-10 minutes of light activity is enough. submitted by /u/Perfect-Fitness to r/workout [link] [comments]

AITA for emasculating my BF?
I (30F) met this guy (28M) in January and he became my BF in February. Comes March, the world goes down the drain and we decided to move in together for the time of the pandemic. Everything is great. In the morning, we have this routine where he browses Reddit and gives me the highlights. A few weeks ago, he shows me a post where this guy is challenged to an arm wrestling competition by his GF. The guy didn't seem to have any sort of training/work out whereas his GF did. I commented he might have a surprise. My BF started educating me on biology and how men are stronger than women. I told him there were way too many factors to take into consideration to make such a broad comment. I have been doing weightlifting for 2 years and my BF has never seen a gym in his life, so I used us as an example. That was a BIG mistake. He got really defensive and condescending, and made comments like "That's cute." I just let it go. Fast forward to yesterday. He's playing some game with his friend (online) and I can clearly hear him talk about me. Well curiosity killed the cat. At first it's all pretty and my ego is bursting, but then he says I'm delusional because I think I'm stronger than him. Pause. "Seriously? I know I'm weak but not weaker than a girl." So later, I decide to call him on his BS. I asked him if he wanted to come workout with me the next day (this morning) so he can show me how strong he is. He accepted and I was happy because I had been dying to bring him and initiate him to something I'm passionate about. So, this morning, we went to my friend's (27M) garage (my region allows groups of 10 or less and we wipe everything). I told him we're gonna do deadlifts. It's my favorite exercise and I was already planning to test my personal best so it was perfect. My friend was there cause he corrects my form and it's been our Sunday ritual since Covid-19. We started light and slowly worked our way up, doing the same number of reps as the other. Comes 185, his form starts to crumble so we made him go lighter. But 185 really isn't that much for me so I kept stacking the plates. He looked very supportive and impressed the whole time. I ended up beating my personal best at 265. I was ecstatic and so were they. When we got in the car, he was very silent. I assumed he was just tired. We got home and that's when he exploded and asked me if I was proud of myself. Apparently, I humiliated him in front of my friend. I apologized. I didnt realize he was feeling that way. He got angry and said it really changed the way he saw me, like I'm less of a woman now. He stormed to the basement. I started collecting my things, but now I'm wondering if I should have been reading between the lines and stopped at 190 or something. Or just dropped it and never suggested we workout together? I knew very well I was stronger than him but I just had to prove it to him. AITA? Update: I still didnt get a word of him but since some of you asked, I will make sure to update you when he does. Thank you for the overwhelming response. That was a bit of a rollercoaster day but it made it easier to know I'm not completely in the wrong. submitted by /u/ThrowRA1287 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

AITA for going to the gym during "women's hour"?
I recently moved into this particular apartment complex because its a lot closer to my work and it has a pretty spectacular gym. The gym fees are built into my monthly rent payment, about $40 and is optional. I elected to pay it because I'm an avid gym-goer. I've been going to the gym at my usual time of around 6:30ish and at first I was oblivious to the fact that during the times that I go, its all women - who usually give me pretty dirty looks but I thought nothing of it. I made a friend in my complex and when she saw me at the gym she was super surprised to see me. Unbeknownst to me, there is a women's hour every weekday from 6p-9p. Now look. I know that us dudes can be big creeps and it can be annoying for a woman to try to get off a workout in peace. But I think that 3 hours is far too excessive. I ended up leaving that day to keep the peace though. Those times make it incompatible for me to go the gym which is open 6a - midnight. I work 8:30a to 5:00p and I usually come home at around 5:30ish, depending on traffic. Usually I like to chill for about half an hour after getting home to decompress and I either make food for later or just browse the twitter or reddit. Now I know that I could wake up early to go....but imma be real honest and say that I'd rather not do that because I like my sleep. What makes it even worse is that the nearest gym is a 40!!!!!! minute drive away. Which is a no bueno for me. So I thought about it and escalated this matter to the strata manager and I asked her about the women's hour because I was not informed of this prior to signing my lease. Apparently its not a policy instituted by the strata, but the tenants (who are mostly women) agreed on this policy as a community and the strata neither endorses nor discourages this policy. I was prepared to give up and make do with the other gym but first I inquired about getting my monthly gym fee waived if I won't be going there. Strata manager said that she can't do that until my lease is up for renewal in a year. So I said eff that, I won't be paying for a service that I won't use. So I go to the gym. I make sure to go out of my way to not look at or talk to any of the women there because I want to leave them alone, and vice versa. I just work out and keep my head down. Today one woman tapped me on the arm (more like hit me if i'm being real) and said "you know it's women's hour right" and I said yeah I know that but the window makes it pretty much impossible for me to work out at other times so I have to go now. Oh and please don't touch me. She got pissed and told me to get out. I refused and ignored her and continued my workout whilst all the other women gave me extremely dirty looks. AITA? Edit: wow I woke up and didn't expect to see this blow up. just to answer a few questions: some people have asked why the nearest gym is so far away - this is because I live in a town that's a satellite town of a major metro area. think Mississauga or Abbotsford or something like that Some have also asked why I don't talk to the women in there. that's because I agree with women's hour in the sense that I do believe they need their own time to workout, I just heavily disagree with the manner in which they're doing it. so Im not going to the gym to talk to anybody....Im just going to workout. I really make an effort and go above and beyond to not appear as if Im "creeping" on these women, like I said I just go and keep my head down. I suppose I could try to get the policy changed but, again, the overwhelming majority of tenants are women (it was the strata manager that told me this). so I would imagine I'd have a hard time getting my voice heard. You know what, now I know how women feel like when they're in a job or something in which they're overwhelmingly the minority in gender, it can kind of suck. submitted by /u/throwaway-gym7727 to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]
