FartBoy a silly project I use as my sandbox as I learn Godot. It’s surprising how fast I've been able to learn to develop something that resembles a game in such a short amount of time! Unfortunately, you don't get to experience the vibration on a PS5 controller every time Frank Boil, aka FartBoy, lets one out. For background, I've been a web dev for decades, so learning GDScript has been pretty easy! Huge thank you to the community for the free assets, tutorials and obviously making this amazing game engine open source ! Some noob questions - custom graphics, sprites, hand-drawn backgrounds
Hello. I am learning RPG Maker MV. I have an idea for a game and would like to ask for your assistance in determining which plugins I need. Below, I will describe my plan for the game: I want to use only hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds (probably I will use Photoshop or Procreate to draw everything and Aseprite for character sprites). For backgrounds, I don't want to use tilesets at all, I want to draw everything by hand - large maps that I can import into MV. I would like to work in a higher resolution than the default and bigger maps (but to be honest I have no idea which resolution I should use) I would like the motion animations to have more than 4 frames. I would like to have a hand-drawn interface that will always be visible as a parent ‘layer’. I would love to play with fog, shadows and darkness/light (my game will be a horror game). I would like the character to move independently of the grids, and for the outlines of objects not to be limited to the basic grid either. I would also be very grateful for any recommendations regarding tutorials on the above working style (i.e. not using MV assets at all/custom stuff all the way). I already saw some stuff on youtube (Rainy Tei Productions, Catowo), but maybe I'm missing something important. For now I want to try QPlus plugins, it seems like something that will be useful for animations with more than 4 frames. Thank you very much for your help. Also, sorry if it sounds weird or needy or anything but I feel overwhelmed by the amount of the MV content I saw today and I feel that I need some advice. Help with hexagonal tilesets
Hello guys, I'm completely new to godot coming from little experience with gamemaker and I've been wanting to make an Isometric Hexagonal game. Now, the tileset seemed an easy starting point but I don't understand what went wrong, especially because the error seems so random. Any Good Paid Courses for Learning Aseprite?
I’ve recently started using Aseprite and want to learn it properly. I’ve found plenty of free YouTube tutorials, but I’m wondering if there are any paid courses that go more in-depth and offer structured lessons. I’m mainly looking for: A beginner-friendly course that covers all the essentials (tools, layers, animations, etc.). A course that progresses into advanced techniques like creating detailed sprites, tilesets, or game-ready assets. Something with assignments or exercises to practice along the way. Ideally, a one-time purchase instead of a monthly subscription (but open to Patreon if it’s really good). I’ve seen a few Patreon creators and Udemy courses, but I’d love to hear from people who actually took them. Are they worth it? Which ones would you recommend? Help with Using Custom Pixel Art Maps in RPG Maker MZ (Less Grid-Like Maps)
Hey everyone! I’m working on a project in RPG Maker MZ and want to use my own custom pixel art for maps, but I’m running into some roadblocks. I already know how to replace the default tileset with my own, but I’m aiming for something less grid-based and more freeform. There are any Aseprite - Godot workflow tutorials?
Hello everyone, I started learning Godot and for the first time, I decided to go with 2D games. I have some experience with Unity and Unreal but never tried 2D workflow. In the last year I get used to work with game engines and Blender (reached a point where I can do 3D low poly stuff with comfort), but now I'm following a tutorial for 2D Godot and I'm really enjoying the process. I have already downloaded and tried basic stuff with Aseprite following a tutorial, but it seems that there are no particular tutorials where is shown how to create example a tileset for Godot, what are the right "settings", how to import stuff ecc. How do I create a pixel art tile set/map without needing a game engine? I just want to make pretty art
I have a tileset I like and I want to rearrange the tiles and build some small towns and stuff, just for fun, maybe to post on Twitter. All the tutorials seem to focus on importing them into Unity and building a game, but I just want a quick way to create a map then export as an image without having to copy paste the same tile in a bunch of places. How would you do this? I want to make a game following my D&D campaign. I need serious help, lots of Qs about how to get started!
First of all, I use MV and I've had it for over a year now but I've been in a rut on how to get started because I dont know how to make the maps and characters fully customizable. If you could help answer some questions, I would really appreciate you taking the time or at the least references resources that would be useful to me! Characters: So I have heard there are multiple ways to do this: character generator, other programs such as character game hub and aseprite on steam, and just flat out taking up pixel art and making your own from scratch. I am looking for a cheap, in between where I can maybe use a model for a foundation and then edit it to be specific to the character design I have in mind. I also want to be able to change the height (as not everyone of our characters in the campaign are same height. What is the best path to take? How do I import anything custom into the rpg maker? Is there a limit to how many? Maps: I really want my maps to have a similar style. The base tilesets are a good starting point, but I need more options. Where can I find more tileset options that fit a medieval/d&d world, and how do I import them? Once again, is there a limit to how much I can have imported? Also for an overworld map, what size is recommended? I am having issues getting certain tiles to overlap others, I dont know how to find tiles that will let me overlap when I need them to, and I also want some small dirt paths or dotted lines to indicate a path to follow for the characters. Also any tips on map making in general? Classes: For D&D, there are some unique races and classes. I notice rpg maker mv already has 4 main actors to start with, but when creating a hero, how do I pick a class just like they did with the starting 4? Does rpg maker have more than 4 classes to choose from, and if so how can I assign them to a character? Also are there clothing or item packs i could download that are specific to certain classes? I am sure I will have more questions later but I really just need this foundation first. Before I do ANY event making, I thought it would be best to just take time making the main characters how I need, and do all of the maps, and then go back and do events. I am so new to this but I am tired of giving up. It feels like I have a lack of customization options for what I see in my head and I dont know how to overcome it or even where to look. How to make a tileset in aseprite? ( new to pixel art )

Animated tileset to unity (rule)tiles.
I was experimenting with Unity 2D and pixel art by creating a tilemap in Aseprite and making a small level in Unity. However, I am running into a few problems, that I am sure could be answered by the people on this subreddit more experienced than me. :) Any help would be greatly appreciated. The stationary tileset (feel free to use it) My first problem is a UI problem with unity. I have chosen a rather small tile size of 16x16. Now in the Project hierarchy the tiles are showing up to scale rather than scaling along with the rest of the UI. This makes it really hard to tell them apart when for instance setting up Ruletiles: ​ UI (possibly to scale, depending on your browser settings) Secondly, I made a small animated tilemap in Aseprite. I can export it in GIF form or as a spritesheet (https://imgur.com/a/74aB5hw): Animated tiles (in GIF form) When I try to set this up in Unity, I can't get the animated tiles to work. Do I have to set up an Animated tile for each individual tile again? From what I found, when making Animated tiles, you have to drag in each frame one by one. This would mean that I would have to locate and drag each frame of each tile. Am I overlooking something here? This same question does apply to Random tiles. The third question involves Rule tiles. In all the tutorials I saw, rule tiles are applied in platformers only, with the rules involving only if there is a tile or not. Is there a function to extend this to recognizing certain tile types for a top down map (such as a wall tile, floor tile, water tile or what not). Or do I have to write custom Rule tiles for this, giving each tile some sort of tag and then using those tags? help with custom tilesets
Hello! so I made a custom tileset, just grass and followed a tutorial on how to put it into my game in MV. I placed the grass in my img>tileset folder for my game and even added it in the database but when I try to put it into the world nothing comes up. What do you suggest: Coding: Unity, Construct, Clickteam Fusion or Game Maker/Pixel art: Pyxel, Asesprite, Photoshop..?
A couple of years ago I did some small games (breakout, maze game etc.) in Game Maker using the drag&drop interface and some basic GML, but gave up on it. I want to get back into 2D game making. Mainly interested in making a small scale platformer (old-school, no physics), maybe action RPG/metroidvania in a couple of years when I get better. I'm not interested in 3D. Platform would be PC to start, maybe mobile or HTML5 later. I have only done some basic coding in Java and C/C++ at uni more than 5 years ago (did student projects like small-scale text based football manager, a chat messenger and a dvd-rental storefront for an imaginary company). Haven't been coding since. Cost not being an issue, which environment do you suggest: Construct, Clickteam Fusion, Game Maker or Unity + Platformer PRO or Corgi Engine + Playmaker (I found these doing some browsing, anything else I should look into?). I'm not that interested in learning coding for coding's sake, I just care about getting the game done (but I'm not adverse to learning some basic scripting either). A good community and quality tutorials is a big plus. This will probably just be a hobby, but of course if things go well I might do something professional in a few years. Would Unity/C# skills be most beneficial then? I'm also learning pixel art, using Pyxel Edit. I know a bit of Photoshop too but found Pyxel's more concentrated workflow easier. Aseprite also looks good but doesn't have tilesets as far as I know (haven't tried it). Anything else I should look into as far as making and importing pixel art? Anyone can copy someone elses code with ease. But to truly learn how to code yourself and understand what you are coding, you need to take what you learn in tutorials and implement it in your own unique way. If you are new to coding, here is a topic made a while ago with some great tips on making your coding adventures go more smoothly. One major habit everyone needs to get into is backing up your project files! While GM:S will make backups for you, up to 15. It is great practice to make your own backups elsewhere. Never be afraid to ask for help with whatever issues you are having. Sometimes it takes someone else looking at your code to spot the problem, give you a faster and cleaner way to write, or just figure out how to do something. Remember, when asking for help, it's best to include the specific code you are having issues with.
