I’m about to move to a new apartment with a back patio. I want to adorn it with plants. I’m interested in a trellis or a garden box. It’s concrete so it will need to be potted or boxed or something like that. FYI, I have no idea what I am doing. No prior experience with a garden. I’ve owned a few indoor snake plants lol. I am trying to do my research, but I’m not sure where to start. I’ll be there starting August 1. So what would also be appropriate to plant at that time of year? Just wanted to post some of the trees that me and my brother recently planted. There’s about five Arizona Cypress’s on the back strip and on each left and right there’s 10, I believe they’re called Spartans. Plan on getting two more to fill a little gap. You can obviously see the reason we’re planting these. You can practically see the Neighbor going to the restroom😂. We’re out here in Texas and I’m personally new into landscaping, I’ve kind of just only done it helping out my parents so feel like I should be good to go, but it never hurts getting any advice or recommendations from the experts/enthusiast. Also don’t judge the pictures, I kind of just pieced together what was in my camera roll. We are still looking into a patio and what not to kinda extend off what we currently have although that’s still in progress. I’ve always wanted to do like a Koi pond with a non-geometrical layout for the hangout area, although my brother is kind of the opposite and wants to a pool with a more geometrical patio style so that’s kind of why we’re delaying anything else other than landscaping. I wanted to put that out there in case anyone’s had a similar situation or has any ideas on which one might be better? Just a quick prelude, my family situation is Complicated so I really have a terrible reference point for healthy long term relationships. Parents have been divorced 5 times between both of them (dad twice, mom 3 times). Anyways the reason for the post is that me (31M) and my fiancee (30F) just got back from a vacation to celebrate her graduation from college, and her getting a job in her field. We have been together for 6 years and as she is an immigrant to the US, with none of her credits transferring over, she has been in college for 8 years to get her degree. I began planning and budgeting 2 trips back in January, to Tampa and to LA, and once I had rough budgets and itineraries I showed them off to her and let her pick which trip she would rather go on. I have a pretty good job, but with supporting both of us while in school, and our wedding coming up later this year, I was only able to budget a 5 day 4 night trip to either locale. Once I showed her both options she immediately picked LA (Absolutely not a surprise) and began adding in her own ideas for what to do. After that I booked everything for the trip and besides a slight hiccup in getting our passport cards, we were ready to go and got there on the first day bright and early at 9am The first day went fantastic and we hit more than what we wanted to do on that day. The issues really started on day 2. I had just drove us over to Santa Monica to have breakfast before we explored the pier, we got seated outside on their patio and the second that the waiter left she turned to me started to grill me about the length of the vacation "Why only 5 days?" "You only did it because you are used to white people holidays" "Waste of money to come for only 5 days, so stupid" She really only stopped when the waiter came by to take our order. Thankfully the restaurant was fairly empty so it wasn't too public, but still I could tell people walking by could overhear our conversation. When I asked why she was only bringing this up now she just said she was too busy with School to look at the itinerary, even though she had made a ton of changes to the plan. It really just set the tone for the rest of the vacation. She would bring it up anytime we were stuck in traffic( which it's LA, this was near constant), waiting in line for the Getty or the Griffith observatory. When I didn't take pictures to her liking, she would sulk and tell me there isn't enough time for me to take this many bad photos. I still tried to have a great time, and we did a ton of stuff in the days we had, but still it was a miserable cloud over every hour that passed. But now coming back, and thinking on it, it seems insanely disrespectful and rude to yell at your fiancee that planned, booked and paid for a trip cross country to celebrate your graduation because it wasn't as long as you wanted it to be. I have tried to talk to her about it, but her response is just "How lucky are you that I am so good this is what you have to complain about". Which honestly makes me question commiting the rest of my life to be with her. There have been other things too, obviously, that are in line with this, but I am just making this post because as someone who has seen so many failed relationships in my family, and with no time for a therapist, just a guy check on whether cancelling a wedding over this is even remotely in line. TLDR: Thinking of cancelling a wedding over how my fiancee acted because the vacation wasn't as long as she wanted. I’m guessing the table is wrought iron. It and the chairs are pretty heavy. We’ve had this set for years now, always kept covered and outside during New England winters. But this year, when we went to put the glass back in, it seemed to shrink?? I took a softish bristle wire brush, then a blower, then soap and a rag to clean off where the glass sits. So it not debris in the way. It seems like the table actually did shrink. And now I’m in trouble of course. My wife likes to bring all this crap into the basement during the winter, but I hate the mess in the basement. So I won the battle, but it seems the war may be lost. Please help! Edit: I rotated it every which way. Still won’t fit. It can’t be flipped upside down because the bottom of the glass has some kind of protective film. However! Today is sunny and warmer than it’s been 65° F. And it almost fits now! I’m thinking when it gets a little warmer we’ll have lift off. Thanks everyone for pitching in and trying to help me solve this! Edit 2: This post seemed to get some attention…(which I very much appreciate!), so I want to keep those interested informed. I just measured everything. The table itself is a perfect square. And when I say that, I’m talking about the landing area where the glass sits. It measures exactly 24 5/8” both ways. The glass on the other hand is 1/8” longer on one side. I’m going to bring it all in sand let it chill in the heat overnight. I’ll update in the morning. Thank you all! I live in a 3BR split level. My old wooden back patio was falling apart. I wanted a new covered deck (not a sunroom), but due to various easements on my property, I couldn’t really build one anywhere else. At the same time, I also wanted a walk in closet with laundry inside, and an ensuite bath. My brilliant idea: add on a 2nd story addition with concrete patio underneath. MBR window becomes the door to the new space. It’s not finished yet - but I like the way it’s turning out. Has anyone else done something like this? Am I nuts? UGH 😤 I ordered a LARGE(!!!) pizza, wings, garlic knots, and brownies. Boyfriend and I stepped out on the patio to chitchat for thirty minutes. We came back inside and this kid had eaten ALL OF IT. Aside from the one half-eaten piece of pizza he fell asleep with on the sofa. My boyfriend just said that's how much 11-year-olds eat and he thought it was pretty funny. But I DON'T think it's funny!! I think it's egregious and disrespectful! By then the store was closed and I had to go without eating 😡 I know that teens eat a lot, but that's an obscene amount of calories for one child in one sitting in THIRTY MINUTES... that's like over 6,000 calories for dinner?? Save me from the rest of this vacation, this boy ransacks every piece of food I bring into our hotel room like he's never eaten a day in his life 😭😭 EDIT: this got a lot of comments I didn't expect. His son lives with his mom in another state. We're on vacation so he can see his child for the first time in ages. His son is a really sweet kid and it's important to me to be a safe adult who doesn't snap on him for things that are likely normal in his own home. I don't REALLY hold it against him, I'm frustrated and it's better to vent anonymously here than to screw up a father-son vacation that's very important to both of them. His son is pretty thin, he's in school sports, loves running, and spent all day swimming. He was probably extra hungry from playing all day and wasn't paying attention to how much he was eating. I don't think there was any malintent from this 11-year-old CHILD. I'm not around kids often and I don't have my own. I had no idea that a kid could pack away that much food or that he would need to be told how much he's allowed to eat without asking for more. He has a better childhood than I did and even though I'm frustrated, I'm glad he feels safe to eat when he's hungry. I would rather be a safe adult that his child is happy to see than for his son to go home feeling some kind of way about his dad and his dad's new girlfriend. The dinner was for all 3 of us, and boyfriend and I stepped outside because we were having a good conversation and didn't want to get smoke all over his son. Neither of us mind coming back in to room temp pizza. (Is all pizza not good pizza?) I'll be talking about it with my boyfriend after vacation is over. honestly i've been lurking here for months reading all the horror stories and never thought i'd actually have my own but here we go got a letter in january saying i owed $750 for "unauthorized exterior modification" — it was a directv dish. like a normal satellite dish on my back patio. been there since i moved in 2 years ago and nobody said anything until now my first instinct was to just pay it because fighting your HOA sounds exhausting. but $750??? for a satellite dish??? so i started digging turns out there's an FCC rule called OTARD (47 CFR 1.4000) that literally makes it illegal for HOAs to ban satellite dishes under 1 meter. like it doesn't matter what your CC&Rs say. federal law overrides it. i had no idea this existed but here's the thing that actually won it — i didn't just cite the federal law. i pulled my CC&Rs and found that they require 30 days written notice via certified mail before any fine. they sent me a regular letter dated 12 days before the fine hit my account. so even IF the dish was a legit violation (it wasn't), the fine was procedurally defective because they didn't follow their own rules sent a one page letter citing both things. got a call 4 days later saying the fine was "removed as a courtesy." lol sure. courtesy. the biggest thing i learned: it's almost never about whether you actually violated something. it's about whether your HOA followed their own process. most of them don't. they skip notice requirements, they don't offer hearings, they charge amounts that aren't in the fine schedule. every one of those is a procedural defect you can use check your CC&Rs people. actually read the enforcement section. i know it's boring as hell but that's where the ammo is submitted by /u/Current_Lab_1184 to r/fuckHOA [link] [comments]

Looking for some advice on what to do with my back patio area. During heavy rain the slab gets flooded and water pools across the whole area. The covered section is about 7m x 3m (~21 sqm). As you can see in the photos, the patio slab sits at the same level as the grass area, so when it rains heavily water runs toward the patio and collects there. I’ve already installed some drainage, but unfortunately it still floods during heavy rain, so I’m now considering raising the floor level. I'm trying to find a practical solution to raise the patio floor so it doesn't flood. I'm not too concerned about the final look/finish, mainly just want something functional that keeps the area usable during heavy rain. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? I was just sitting on my front patio minding my own business, enjoying the weather and people watching. A guy pulls his car into the driveway behind my car and gets out. I have no idea who he. When he gets out of his car he doesn’t look my way or say anything to me. I was curious about who he was so I say “can I help you with something?” I just wasn’t sure why he was there because I’m the only tenant out of two home at the moment, and I don’t know if he’s planning on parking and leaving. He says back with a snarky tone, “No, you can’t help me with anything. I’m just delivering something next door. Are you going to be moving your car in the next three minutes?” I replied, “You know, I’m just asking because I don’t know who you are. And you don’t have to give me attitude since you’re parking in my driveway.” He’s gone for a few minutes, comes back and gets in his car. Rolls down his window and shouts to me that I’m a b***h and a Karen. Like WTF, entitled much? If he would’ve gotten out of his car and said somewhat friendly, “I’m making a quick delivery next door, do you mind if I park here for three minutes?”, I honestly wouldn’t have minded. He came back like 10 minutes later, after my guy friend showed up and parked behind me (I guess he forgot a bag that he was delivering). I pointed him out to my friend and he looked over at both of us. And wouldn’t you know it, he suddenly had nothing to say. He gave me so much attitude for no reason. There used to be a very ugly slate patio where this boulder is now exposed. I removed the patio and uncovered this massive boulder slightly raised against the yard. I wanted to see if I could “trim” the rock down a bit to grow grass over it, so I drilled the holes you see and used dexpan to little effect. I’m also now reading even if I could trim down a bit there would still be problems with growing grass. Ideally I’d like this to be a grassy area even if it has to be a slight mound, what are my options/ideas? Jackhammer? I have lived in this apartment for 8 years, and most of my neighbors have been there 10+ years. The street level of my building houses shops, two restaurants, a bakery and a tattoo parlor. It's a pretty quiet street, and all the street level businesses close up between 9-10pm. Up until about 8-9ish months ago, the restaurant directly below me was a sushi place since way before I moved in. They have a patio with 7-8 tables that juts out onto the sidewalk. I was a regular there, and was super bummed when it closed. It was the owners finally retiring and moving to be closer to their grandkids, so whatyagonnado. The building was empty for about 3 months, until I noticed some construction going on. Found out it was a local entrepreneur who owns several bars and restaurants in my city. No big deal, kinda stoked because his other places have the best burgers. The issue was, that he wanted this to be more of a bar than a restaurant. That meant they would stay open until 2am on the weekends, 1am on the weekdays. I heard through the grapevine that the reason he picked that location is that everything closes early, and he would have the spot everyone in the area would go to when the other places closed up. My neighbors and I were not thrilled, but oh well. After operating a month or two, it became clear this was a bar targeting the 21-26 year old demographic. That's fine, do what you do. I'm 40, so I'm not an old man, and I still stay out late on occasion. But most nights I do go to bed fairly early. The issue is, the bar patrons get reallllly loud and kinda rowdy around midnight, and they talk super loudly on the patio which is below my window. The bar has a garage type door they open when the weather is nice to access the patio, so when it's open, I can also hear the loud music being played from inside, and I can hear it (faintly) through my floor. Being the diplomat I am, I went to the bar during the day one day I knew the owner would be there to chat with him about my concerns. He basically told me I could move if I didn't like it and was really dismissive. Ok then. About 2 weeks later around 11pm, I was at my limit with the drunk screaming conversations happening outside. I figured that if the owner had no issue with noise, I would participate. If you can't beat em, join em sort of thing. I got out my fairly powerful bluetooth speaker, and set it up in my window on a small table I have there. I connected it to an old phone I had, and started playing "Jingle Bells" (the Frank Sinatra version, of course. I do have some class) on repeat. Then I left my place and went to play cards and a local casino until after the bar was closed. I got back at 2:30am and turned off the music and went to sleep. I repeated this 4-5 times a week for 3ish more weeks, and started noticing that the garage door to the bar was closed more often than not. The only people hanging on the patio were smokers, and they didn't stay long. As long as it stayed quiet, I didn't play Jingle Bells, but when it got loud and rowdy, the music came on and stayed on until they closed. I only did my stunt on days they had the patio door open and it would get loud, never just because. My petty revenge is obviously costing him business, because they are starting to close earlier, and the patio is usually empty because they keep the garage door closed. I started to feel a little bad, but he was so dismissive of me when I wanted to chat and find a solution, I didn't really have a choice besides move or suck it up. My building is rent controlled, so moving was never an option for me. I am surprised the owner or manager haven't tried to come talk to me, but maybe they don't negotiate with musical terrorists. My dad thinks I'm being petty, and some of my friends agree. Some think its hilarious, and some think I'm TA because I am costing him and the workers there money. We are currently on a 10 day 'no holiday spirit' streak, and it's been nice like it was when the old couple had the place downstairs. So, AITA? Its your home and he wasn't being respectful of the disruption he was causing to you and the other people who rent. In the UK we have laws about excessive noise and places have signs about trying to be quieter for neighbours where there are late closing businesses, is there nothing you were able to do legally to stop the noise issues? They said it won’t be worse than what we were dealing with and were glad I wanted to try something. & Even the building supe told me to go for it. He was not happy about the noise either. Update Oct 13, 2025 Got a couple update requests, so here it is. The Update Welp, I have some things to report in the Holiday Spirit Wars of 2025 They had a massive 4th of July party and it got way out of hand. My Sinatra Defense SystemTM was powerless against the loud music and yelling that was going on. People were all over the sidewalk smoking and yelling and it was a whole thing. There was a fight, cops were called, bar shut down for the night. To those that guessed they were not approved for that sort of establishment, you were correct. Turns out there is a license here called a 'nightclub' license or something similar you gotta have to stay open late night hours. The LCB was notified by the police I'm guessing, and they came in soon after that and pulled their license to serve all booze pending a hearing or something. It ended up not mattering, because they just closed the doors. It was reopened like the last week of August ish. Same name but just as a restaurant. They posted new hours and they now closed at 10pm daily. Some new signs went up that seemed to be focusing on the food more than booze, so things were gonna change. Few days later I decided to be a bit nosey and went in for lunch. I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender. I asked him what was up with the rebrand, and he told me that the owners business partner was taking over running their properties. Apparently, the owner that was sort of a dick to me in the first post is kinda having a tough go of it. I guess he's getting divorced, and is just partying and drinking super hard to cope or whatever. Kinda made me feel bad, so I confessed to the bartender that I was the Jingle Bells Bandit. He started laughing and goes 'Oh your that guy?!'. He said the previous bartender was a buddy of his and told him about it. He also told me the reason he never escalated things in our little war was because he didn't want me to complain to the city. Still have no idea why nobody else called, but my place is the one directly above the bar so I took the worst of it. The 4th of July party was the first time I had seen the garage doors open since my first post, so I thought we had a truce. Guy says that the new managing partner told the old guy not to have the party but he did anyway. So thats why he's managing their properties now. Idk if he's doing them all now or what the deal is, but I won't see the other guy for a bit. So thats it. They do make a good burger though. I've been in a few times since. The new staff is super nice, and the patio below my window is open most of the time and its fine. Its just people having lunch and dinner talking at a normal volume and doing it sober, which is nice. I have lived in this apartment for 8 years, and most of my neighbors have been there 10+ years. The street level of my building houses shops, two restaurants, a bakery and a tattoo parlor. It's a pretty quiet street, and all the street level businesses close up between 9-10pm. Up until about 8-9ish months ago, the restaurant directly below me was a sushi place since way before I moved in. They have a patio with 7-8 tables that juts out onto the sidewalk. I was a regular there, and was super bummed when it closed. It was the owners finally retiring and moving to be closer to their grandkids, so whatyagonnado. The building was empty for about 3 months, until I noticed some construction going on. Found out it was a local entrepreneur who owns several bars and restaurants in my city. No big deal, kinda stoked because his other places have the best burgers. The issue was, that he wanted this to be more of a bar than a restaurant. That meant they would stay open until 2am on the weekends, 1am on the weekdays. I heard through the grapevine that the reason he picked that location is that everything closes early, and he would have the spot everyone in the area would go to when the other places closed up. My neighbors and I were not thrilled, but oh well. After operating a month or two, it became clear this was a bar targeting the 21-26 year old demographic. That's fine, do what you do. I'm 40, so I'm not an old man, and I still stay out late on occasion. But most nights I do go to bed fairly early. The issue is, the bar patrons get reallllly loud and kinda rowdy around midnight, and they talk super loudly on the patio which is below my window. The bar has a garage type door they open when the weather is nice to access the patio, so when it's open, I can also hear the loud music being played from inside, and I can hear it (faintly) through my floor. Being the diplomat I am, I went to the bar during the day one day I knew the owner would be there to chat with him about my concerns. He basically told me I could move if I didn't like it and was really dismissive. Ok then. About 2 weeks later around 11pm, I was at my limit with the drunk screaming conversations happening outside. I figured that if the owner had no issue with noise, I would participate. If you can't beat em, join em sort of thing. I got out my fairly powerful bluetooth speaker, and set it up in my window on a small table I have there. I connected it to an old phone I had, and started playing "Jingle Bells" (the Frank Sinatra version, of course. I do have some class) on repeat. Then I left my place and went to play cards and a local casino until after the bar was closed. I got back at 2:30am and turned off the music and went to sleep. I repeated this 4-5 times a week for 3ish more weeks, and started noticing that the garage door to the bar was closed more often than not. The only people hanging on the patio were smokers, and they didn't stay long. As long as it stayed quiet, I didn't play Jingle Bells, but when it got loud and rowdy, the music came on and stayed on until they closed. I only did my stunt on days they had the patio door open and it would get loud, never just because. My petty revenge is obviously costing him business, because they are starting to close earlier, and the patio is usually empty because they keep the garage door closed. I started to feel a little bad, but he was so dismissive of me when I wanted to chat and find a solution, I didn't really have a choice besides move or suck it up. My building is rent controlled, so moving was never an option for me. I am surprised the owner or manager haven't tried to come talk to me, but maybe they don't negotiate with musical terrorists. My dad thinks I'm being petty, and some of my friends agree. Some think its hilarious, and some think I'm TA because I am costing him and the workers there money. We are currently on a 10 day 'no holiday spirit' streak, and it's been nice like it was when the old couple had the place downstairs. So, AITA? Consensus: NTA. Welp, I have some things to report in the Holiday Spirit Wars of 2025 They had a massive 4th of July party and it got way out of hand. My Sinatra Defense SystemTM was powerless against the loud music and yelling that was going on. People were all over the sidewalk smoking and yelling and it was a whole thing. There was a fight, cops were called, bar shut down for the night. To those that guessed they were not approved for that sort of establishment, you were correct. Turns out there is a license here called a 'nightclub' license or something similar you gotta have to stay open late night hours. The LCB was notified by the police I'm guessing, and they came in soon after that and pulled their license to serve all booze pending a hearing or something. It ended up not mattering, because they just closed the doors. It was reopened like the last week of August ish. Same name but just as a restaurant. They posted new hours and they now closed at 10pm daily. Some new signs went up that seemed to be focusing on the food more than booze, so things were gonna change. Few days later I decided to be a bit nosey and went in for lunch. I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender. I asked him what was up with the rebrand, and he told me that the owners business partner was taking over running their properties. Apparently, the owner that was sort of a dick to me in the first post is kinda having a tough go of it. I guess he's getting divorced, and is just partying and drinking super hard to cope or whatever. Kinda made me feel bad, so I confessed to the bartender that I was the Jingle Bells Bandit. He started laughing and goes 'Oh your that guy?!'. He said the previous bartender was a buddy of his and told him about it. He also told me the reason he never escalated things in our little war was because he didn't want me to complain to the city. Still have no idea why nobody else called, but my place is the one directly above the bar so I took the worst of it. The 4th of July party was the first time I had seen the garage doors open since my first post, so I thought we had a truce. Guy says that the new managing partner told the old guy not to have the party but he did anyway. So thats why he's managing their properties now. Idk if he's doing them all now or what the deal is, but I won't see the other guy for a bit. So thats it. They do make a good burger though. I've been in a few times since. The new staff is super nice, and the patio below my window is open most of the time and its fine. Its just people having lunch and dinner talking at a normal volume and doing it sober, which is nice. UPDATE: thank you all for your feedback and helping me gain clarity on the situation! I'll add a couple of key pieces of information that may clarify some popular questions! To me, the proposal itself was absolutely fine. I didn't want or expect anything Instagram worthy, (I don't even have instagram) so maybe my heading was a little misleading? I said it wasn't well planned because to me, part of proposing is the excitement that follows and telling people etc. Which he had no plan to do. Bad timing may have been the better word instead of poor planning? I mean he goes on this trip once a year, it's not a frequent thing. His mother LOVES me and I love her! SHE is the one who introduced us when her and I used to work together, which is why I was so concerned with how/when we wanted to tell her so she didn't feel left out since my family was present, and I wasn't stuck avoiding her/lying to her for a week while he was away, when she asks me how the trip went? (which she already has) I have never pressured this man into marriage, in fact he has been much more into the idea than I have. Of course we've talked about it, but I was the one saying let's not rush it. So definitely not a shut up ring. I (32F) was proposed to by my boyfriend (38M). It was an awkward proposal, as we were on a family trip, sharing a house with my Mom, Sister, her husband and young children. At one point my sister awkwardly got up from the fire pit and told her husband and my mom to come with her. So, I knew something was up. He was sweet, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so happy and said yes! But about 5 minutes later my family came back out to the patio to congratulate us. When we got home from the trip, I decided to talk to him about it because we got home Sunday night and he left for a weeklong work trip Monday morning, again leaving me wondering how/ when we were going to be able to tell people? I felt like he took all of the excitement out of something that was should have been such a happy time. Anyways, when I mentioned it just seemed random and not really planned, he got mad and said "well let's just call it off then". I was so surprised by that I just told him we needed to cool down. He came back into our room later and said what he meant was we should just redo the proposal, but that I interrupted him and didn't let him finish his sentence. (I didn't) and that doesn't remotely sound like "we should just call it off" to me? I told him that calling off an engagement less than 24 hours after proposing is a problem. He tossed the ring at me and said "whatever, just sell it then" He later apologized for losing his temper (not like him at all) but I just feel like even if he did redo the proposal, the damage is already done. I hope this is the right Reddit for this one. I live in a large apartment complex that is only two stories, but spread out. Every two apartments have back patios that are "attached" to each other, but it is still obvious what side is yours and what side is your neighbor's. I have never had issues with this newer neighbor before this, so I was rather stunned when he became an issue. To access the back patio we have sliding glass doors (SGD) that you access from the living room. In my living room, my recliner is right next to the SGD. So, about two weeks ago, I am sitting in my chair, watching TV, my husband is at work. I can suddenly hear my neighbor, very clearly talking outside. But they are so loud. Thinking this is odd, I lean forward and move the shade over the SGD and am stunned to see my male neighbor sitting in a chair right in front of my SGD! I am very disconcerted by this. But I am alone and don't feel comfortable telling him to move while I'm alone. I don't know him, after all. Hubby comes home, I tell him. He goes right out and moves his chair (the neighbor had gone inside) that was blocking our door. About an hour later, the guy comes back out and tries to move the chair back. I was still watching TV, so I could hear the dragging sound. I opened my door and told him he couldn't do that, this was our side, not his. "Oh,oh, I'm sorry, I did not know" he says. I come home two days later, his chair is right outside the SGD. again. This time, I take a picture, with him in the chair. I moved his chair three more times, since I really did not want to have to report him to the landlords. But he kept moving it back. Yesterday, I reported him as he was sitting in his chair. I also showed the picture. The landlord's eyes were as big as saucers when she saw it. She was out there within 5 minutes to tell him this was a NO NO and not to do it again. When I told her this had been going on for a while, she asked why I had not reported it before. I told her I had hoped we could just settle it between us, and that I hadn't wanted to escalate it if possible. Does privacy mean nothing to people these days? I didn't post this is neighbors from hell since I didn't think it rose to that level Edit to add : So, when my husband got home last night, I told him about the suggestion to get a stick to put in the track of the SGD. He said "What about that baseball bat we used to keep in the car?" I pulled that out of the closet and was so surprised. It was a perfect fit! So now he can see a bat in my window. Mood Spoiler: both awesome and frustrating in different ways Original Post: May 21, 2025 Title: Woke up to my crows screaming at me through my window at 5am, was mad but turned out they wanted my help Fast forward to me scaling a fence to wrangle a feisty little cat that was menacing my crows. I feed my crows on my apartment patio, which is about 10 feet off the ground and overlooks an enclosed gravel parking lot for a nearby business. My crows can perch on my fence and see me through my window. This morning at 5:30 am they started absolutely screeching at me through the window, which they have never done before. I just got back from a camping trip so I thought they were mad I had been gone. I went out there to be like, "it is too early to be yelling for snacks!!" Everyone was still screeching and I'm mad cause it's cold and I'm half asleep, so I go to toss the kibble into the parking lot instead of putting it on the railing so they'll move away from my apartment. That's when I see the cat. Like duh, of course they were mad about something. Well the cat didn't look very old and was stuck in the parking area (it's fully fenced in and locked) and obviously a danger to birds. So I got dressed and went to get it. Man, what an adventure. It took me 30 minutes to catch this damn cat. Not because it was scared of me but because it was having way too much fun terrorizing the birds and making me chase it. Plus I had to climb the fence to get it and then climb back over with the cat (I wrapped it tightly in my hoodie). At least there weren't a lot of people out to witness me pspspspspspspspsing and swearing for 30 min in the early hours. My crows followed us around the whole time and kept showing me where the cat was when it would run away so I could go catch it lol. At one point the cat was rolling around on a roof shed and all these birds were perched in the tree above it screaming, and I swear this cat was eating it up. Anyways, I finally managed to get the sneak wrapped in my hoodie and it's now resting safely in my puppies crate until I can find the owner etc. (already working on that part). I have two big dogs and a 560 square foot apartment so kitty is not staying here. Though my older dog is OBSESSED with this cat. She is just laying next to the crate staring at it. I hope my crows are grateful because waking up at 5:30 am, climbing into a locked fenced area, and wrangling a sneaky juvenile cat in order to protect my crows was not on my list of things I wanted to do this morning. Update (Same Post): 1 hour later UPDATE: Kitty is back with owner, an older woman in the neighborhood who told me that kitty, "is an indoor/outdoor cat and she has a lot of freedom." I let her know that I apprehended her because "the birds I regularly feed were very upset/going after the cat" and reminded her that outdoor cats are a danger to birds. Crows are so cool! I love them. If I have another encounter with this cat/owner I am hamming up the danger to the cat because she definitely didn't seem concerned about the bird population. I didn't even mention they were crows! No need to have her meds with them to 'protect' her cat. I would point out you've seen rodent pellets out, and her cat can die from catching/eating a poisoned mouse. OOP: Oh I would not mention the crows as I know that most people don't realize that they are smarter than most pets and have no appreciation (idiots) for their beauty and perfection. I would likely mention eagles, falcons, ospreys etc. as we have tons of much more dangerous predator birds in this area that really could hurt her cat. ETA: the rodent traps/pellets are a good idea! There are plenty of traps around so it would be an honest warning! Crows and OOP's dogs: I was really surprised at first because my crows and dogs tolerate each other really well. I used to live in a home with a fenced in backyard and my crow family trusted my older dog with their fledglings. They would let them bop around in the yard even when my dog was out. I have worked very intentionally though to train my dog not to chase crows and give fledglings their distance. The main things she chases are squirrels and raccoons and the crows, I think, appreciate her for that. Every now and then a crow would startle or move really fast and her natural instincts take over and she jumps up and acts like she's going to chase. But then she catches herself and stops haha. Now I live in a new place and have a new puppy who is learning to be friends with crows too! I usually put my crow snacks in the potted plants on my patio and then also on the railing. The other day my puppy was out on the patio with the crow when it was trying to eat and Gregor (my puppy) kept getting into the planter the crow was going for. So he flew to the other end of the patio, knocked some treats off the railing onto the patio ground, waited for Gregor to notice and come bumbling over, and then went and got the planter treats while puppy was distracted. Genius. Now I put all their treats on the railing so my silly puppy doesn't steal them. But the short version is, my dogs and crows get along great! My crows regularly fly down right next to my dogs to get treats. My puppy alerted me to a nearby crow today before I even noticed and it was only a couple feet away on the ground. I've started from 0 with feeding crows twice now because I had to move suddenly and left my original murder behind. What works best for me is to go on a walk around town with a bag of peanuts. Every single time I hear or see a crow (whether I think they have seen me or not) I toss out some peanuts. The first couple walks you may not get any to come down at all. Don't give up! Patience and continuity are key. When you have your first crow come down for peanuts, then you can start putting out peanuts at home. They will follow you and find your home and then they will visit your home. In my experience, going to them first works much better than waiting for them to come to you. They want to see they can trust you and that you'll make an effort before they'll try peanuts you left out at home. What if those are poisoned?? What if it's a trap?? Also for the first several weeks keep your eyes and face averted. They don't want you to make eye contact until you've got an established relationship. But when you get there, so good! Nothing like looking a crow in the eyes and it looking right back at you. Commenter: This makes me want to be famous with crows. Think about the possibilities! I would travel the country just making friends with crows in every city, become a legend. You should do that. Show her this study if she hasn't seen it yet. They have to keep changing the number of years because the crows just keep remembering. There's no telling how long they'll remember because now it's clear that they communicate about people to other crows and their offspring, so grudges span generations. If it was merely by intuition, or close observation, I think I may need to hang you with the title of "The Crow Whisperer". OOP: Ok this is so random. But it was a combination of intuition and the movie Nope. Not making eye contact with a wild creature is a key aspect of that movie (based on real evidence from nature) and when I was interacting with my crows I realized that they did not like it when I looked directly at them. So I just tried not looking at them and they would let me get so much closer. I built up trust with them by watching them from a distance or inside my house/apartment. They mind that less. Then slowly looking at them from the corner of my eye (they know you're watching them). Sometimes it takes months, but if you really give it a go and are slow and patient the reward is fantastic. Mini Update Post 2: May 27, 2025 (2 days later) Title: Wag Wah and his mate saying a close hello, also making sure the other crows know I've been claimed Video available for view in the post link Here's my main bro, calling him Wah Wah and Wallow after everyone gave suggestions for his nickname, and his mate. Mate is in the tree on the left and Wallow is hanging out on the right supervising. See my post history if you want more backstory. While I was out on my walk with my dogs today, just before the tree hellos, a different crow came along with a treat in its beak and showed it off to me like, "hey you got treats? I like them, you could feed me too!" Unfortunately I did not have any crow treats with me at the time. Slacking, I know. As soon as I started talking to this crow, Wallow comes out of nowhere and tackles them, knocks them on their back, and just lays into them. The other crow was fine, flew away a second later. I have to say I cracked up. Not the first time Wallow has kept crows away from me, but usually he's only territorial about my patio. Seems like he's upping the anti. 😂 Once the other crow was dealt with, Wallow and his mate flew in and perched on these two trees within feet of me. The video is not zoomed in, they were both within an arms reach, the closest they have chosen to get yet. We had a nice little chat and then my dogs and I went on our way. After promising further treats at home of course. The second part of the video is Wallow on my porch strutting around on the railing. He just had his treats and is feeling pretty good about himself for claiming his territory. I've been wondering why I only get one or two crows on my patio for a hot minute. Definitely confirmed it today that Wallow is keeping them away 😆. He and his mate are the only ones allowed, and he only brings his mate when he's feeling it. Update Post 3: June 2, 2025 (5 days later, 12 from OG post) Title: update: THE CAT IS BACK. This time my crowbro helped me catch her. TLDR: I saved my crows from a cat and became the neighborhood crow hero. Got my second call for duty today 🫡. Same fucking cat. So I was on a walk with my dogs this morning when I hear a crow alarm going off in one of the trees ahead. I bustled my dogs along to see what was up, because if I can help obviously I'm going to. Bro was flapping around this tree screeching about something, which is when I realized it was my guy, Wallow. I looked up in the branches to see what was going on and it's that damn cat again. All I had with me was my wallet so I tried throwing it at her to get her to come down. I'm not afraid to climb a tree (really I will climb a tree for fun) but this one would be difficult and it's on the grounds of a middle school. The last thing I need is to embarrass myself by falling out of a tree next to a middle school I walk by every day. Well I missed a bunch with my wallet and she didn't give a shit so, time to reconsider. At first I thought it might be a different cat because it was wearing a different color collar and there have been signs up for a lost cat that looks similar. So I ran back to the local dog store (just up the street) to see if I could find the "Lost Cat" sign I had seen before. The sign was gone. Thus, I figured little miss kitty had to be a repeat offender. I took my dogs home and went back out to check on the cat situation. Figured I might as well see if there was anything I could do. My bro (wah wah or Wallow is his nickname but I mostly just say "hey friend" to him), was sitting on the roof of the middle school a ways away keeping on eye on things. I couldn't see the cat anymore so I circled the tree looking for it, but no such luck. I thought maybe she had left already so I turned to leave and that's when Wallow came flying down from his perch all fluffed up ready to go talons out. Kitty was just hiding further up where I couldn't see her. He got this cat so good she ran out of the tree terrified and I was able to grab her. So now I have a sidekick (Wallow not the cat). Sally is the cat's name and she has a new collar with her owners phone number on it. I carried her back to my apartment in the embarrassing ass hanging free position that Wallow enjoyed so much last time and he divebombed us the whole way back to my apartment shrieking swear words at Sally. She was definitely scared. Wallow got extra kibble today as a thank you for the assist. And Sally's owner got a voicemail explaining how her cat was in danger from large predatory birds that kept divebombing her (wouldn't tell her they were crows in a million years) and that she may want to reconsider having her cat outdoors. Cat's in jail (my puppy's crate) for now. She definitely remembered me and I think wanted to be saved? Because there were a lot of birds harassing her in that tree. Not just crows haha. And yet again I have dealt with little miss Sally before even having my first cup of coffee. So I'm gonna go do that while I wait for a callback from Sally's owner. I felt so awful but I don't know where she lives and felt it would be too weird to ask, so Sally is out and about again. Owner is expecting her and said she would keep an eye out. She's an elderly lady who I guess just doesn't see a problem with having an indoor/outdoor cat. I'll probably have repeated run ins with Sally now. I put her owner's number in my phone lol. We are the second owners, so one family lived here since the house was built in 1922. They added on in 1950, but not sure when brick item was built. It has a cement path to it from the cement back patio (part of the addition). I wondered if it was a grill, but there’s no blackening, which I would expect if fire was ever burned on it (also wondering if fire on concrete is even safe?). Any other ideas? Just over a month ago, I helped my dad and his wife move into a new build that they were waiting almost two years to be completed. I saw this as a downgrade from their previous house that was sitting on 2 acres, had a beautiful kitchen that he redid himself, as well as a massive two story garage that my brothers and I helped him build. But he decided it was too difficult to maintain as he’s getting older and decided to get into something more easy to manage. I went out to breakfast with him and my oldest brother this morning when he said that his house was on the market for 8 days before it sold. I didn’t understand why he brought that up, as his house was on the market a while ago and I thought he just brought up something random about his old house (with the sweet garage). My brother asked, “wait your brand new house?”, and he nodded his head. I couldn’t believe it! Mother fucker I spent two days helping you move, what do you mean you sold your house? He went on to explain that he needed approval to have a shower rail installed in their bathroom (he’s 62 years old) and wasn’t allowed to have an inoperable vehicle in their own garage (my dad and brother are gear heads, so that’s gonna be an issue). The final straw was when they got a cease and desist letter from the board’s attorney for a conversation he was having on his back patio that the president overheard as she was walking her dog. They had no idea she was their neighbor from across the street. Apparently, she had even gone as far as to have cameras pointed at their house after this. My dad asked his lender to look over the bylaws. After 20 minutes, the lender called back and said “yeah, gtfo”. Idk how he pulled it off but he lived in the house for just over a month, discovered his HOA were fascists, sold the house in 8 days, and will make $10-15k when all is said and done. I bet he read the bylaws for his new house. I came home and told my wife we will never get into a house that’s apart of an HOA. I can’t believe my poor dad has to deal with this at his age but I guess this is why you should always read the fine print.
