I'm thankful I managed to pay my house off early last year at 45, but I'm entering a new phase now where I'm dumping money into it for updates so I hopefully won't have much to worry about over the next 20 years. Roof done, full bathroom gut and remodel next, HVAC later this year, kitchen remodel not long after that. It's a 75 year old house though so that stuff is just due.

Why does a tiny bathroom remodel cost as much as a car now? Am I missing something? 😅
I'm planning to remodel my bathroom around 5x7 or 6x8 with basic updates like shower, tiles, and fixtures, nothing high-end or complex, but the quotes I’m getting are between $15K and $30K+ which feels way higher than expected for such a small space. I understand costs have gone up, but is this just the new normal now or am I missing something when it comes to pricing and scope? submitted by /u/midasweb to r/HomeImprovement [link] [comments]

I remodelled my girlfriend's bathroom because of failed waterproofing
(EDIT: please excuse some of the weird AI blurriness around the bottom edges of some pics: I shot these with a super wide 10mm lens with terrible sensor crop/vignetting, and I used photoshops refill feature to try clean up the corners, but I just realised it's left some ugly AI-looking funkiness on the very corners) (2nd EDIT: the hole in the ceiling above the shower is for a skylight, I'll install that and finish off the plastering once my partner's bank account recovers from the bathtub purchase. My Girlfriend recently bought her first home; A mid-2000s developer build in Pascoe Vale. Unfortunately, as expected of these kinds of builds in Australia; there was significant water damage due to failed waterproofing in the upstairs shower. This was, however, a good excuse to redo the bathroom for her and get rid of the grey floor tiles, grey wall tiles, grey vanity, and all other depressing mid-2000s developer-build stylings. She also wanted a bathtub, and a frameless shower. The existing bathroom wasn't big enough to achieve this, so I moved some walls and claimed space from an adjoining linen closet for the shower recess. I also had to do some tricky stuff with raising and lowering parts of the floor (difficult because of the truss beam system) to create the appropriate drop for the screed, to accommodate the threshold-less shower. (I did like 6 coats of waterproofing, above and below screed, used the most expensive bond-breaker tape I could source etc. because I did NOT want this bathroom to leak again!). She wanted a timber vanity. We discovered nice timber vanities are insanely expensive. So I built the vanity myself out of some cheap tassie-oak panels from Bunnings. I was very happy with how well that came up. My friends Milwaukee tracksaw made that very easy to do. I also dropped the ceiling by 45mm to create a recessed led "halo" light as the main lighting, which turned out really nice. My partner wanted a clear bathtub because she's a pervert (I'm currently refusing to bath in it for fear of being ogled and objectified). Oh; she would also like it known that she bought this bathtub BEFORE it was featured on The Block. She was not happy when it appeared on the block. (I think she wanted to order her tub, then the supply company go out of business, so she was the only person in Australia to have a clear resin bathtub). It looks fabulous, but it was monstrously difficult to silicone in place due to the caustic effect of the clear resin visually magnifying and emphasising the silicone bead from every angle inside and outside (And also I am not very good at siliconing). The total cost of this renovation was about $12k I think. It took me about 3 months, after work each day and on weekends. (although the amount of tiling here almost killed me). The main costs was the bathtub ($5k), and the bath faucet at ($1.1k), and my mental sanity & hairline (priceless). submitted by /u/khdownes to r/AusRenovation [link] [comments]

Just finished remodeling bathroom and discovered this
Finally, after a month of working on my first DIY total bathroom remodel, our shower door (what I've been calling "the final boss") was finally delivered. I spent morning installing the header pole to the perfect location, only to discover while dry fitting the fixed glass panel, that it will not work with our wall. Apparently somewhere along the line the wall and the curb have come out of level and I don't know what, if anything can be done to fix this. My wife and I are devastated! We'l really don't want to have to use a framed glass shower door, or even worse, a shower curtain. Take look at how far off this is in the photos. Ps. It's just the wall on the fixed panel side. The other wall where the door will sit against is perfect. submitted by /u/EasyReport6959 to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Before & After Bathroom Remodel - $4k
Did renovations on the whole boat house, but spent a lot of time on this bathroom. It’s a historic house so ended up having to replace some old plumbing lines & updated electrical wiring/ran it properly. Added 2 outlets for toilet and mirror. I kept the tub because it’s a jacuzzi tub that works great. I refinished it so it looks new. I did add an access panel for the pump & electrical for the tub on an exterior wall. Only project I hired pros for was to install the large format tile throughout. I ended up changing the grout the tilers used because I didn’t like how light it was. I think the last picture has the light grout, the other 2 pics show how it looks now that I regrouted it. Took me almost 2 months. All said and done the total cost came in at $3850, which includes the labor for tile. Here’s a basic break down: Tile $650 Instal $750 Toilet $700 $mirror $200 Sink / counter $400 Plumbing/copper/valves $150 Fixtures $300 Electrical $150 Drywall/mud/paint $200 Hardieboard $150 Tile Edging/ grout $200 $3850 Miscellaneous Ill guesstimate at most $300 Total $4150 Blood, sweat, tears and time: priceless. Side notes: tankless bidet toilet is the best splurge purchase ever. It’s now a must have for me. I waited till I found one on sale. And the window had to stay .. historic boat house & window faces the water. submitted by /u/BlondieMIA to r/Remodel [link] [comments]

Tastefully remodeling this bathroom
My wife wants to tear out this guest bathroom. I really dig it and am trying to convince her to at least salvage some of the art deco fixtures. She wants a new contemporary three piece instead of the four with large format tiles, a double shower stall surrounded by glass, and a waterfall sink. She says she wants a classic look and the bathroom as it exists looks dated. The entire house is a century house that has been immaculately kept and she’s really giving me a hard time. I already had to toss the chestnut passage doors in a dumpster and install a double sided gas fireplace where the old dumb waiter was. submitted by /u/Temporary-Basil-3030 to r/vintage [link] [comments]

Bathroom remodel is finally done
After two long months my bathroom remodel is finished. The house was built in 1908 and probably remodeled once or twice since I purchased it, the bathroom before had the worst layout so I had to move it all and convert it from tub to shower. Some of the previous plumbing was a nightmare, they had cut a large section of the joist to run the old plumbing. So I had to get new joists installed. After all that I think I designed and planned the bathroom well. submitted by /u/Designer-Squirrel672 to r/Renovations [link] [comments]

Almost done with my bathroom remodel, how did I do?
The bathroom was GROSS. Tile broken, mold, layers of dirt and grime that were like concrete. The entire bathroom needed to be gutted. The only thing that remains from the original bathroom is the toilet and the cast iron tub. The tub needs re glazing but I couldn't get another tiny tub that would fit in the space without spending thousands so I'm making it work. Still have to paint the new door for the new bathroom closet and waiting for the hinges to come in but overall it's almost done! submitted by /u/Intelligent-Deal2449 to r/centuryhomes [link] [comments]

2025 bathroom remodel prices?
I am a general contractor and had posted something regarding pricing a while ago. I just had my subs remodel this bathroom . Some features included a curbless entry shower, floating bench and large niche with led lights plus floating shelves in the closet space. 2 LED medicine cabinets . All of this was finished at a little over $10 K in labor. Location is Chicago suburbs. Would this pricing be considered on the higher side ? PS I did had to bump up my prices as the subs started charging more. submitted by /u/No_Commercial8216 to r/Remodel [link] [comments]

New Home Bathroom Remodel
Hi everybody, I’m hoping to get some opinions on a bathroom remodel in our just purchased first home. I’ve asked chatgpt to render the two options as I’m in a creative/practical conundrum on which direction to go. Advice or a clear winner in your opinion would be awesome! Constraints/Considerations: 1. We refinished the cast iron tub professionally, but it’s a longer than standard 66”. This is making it difficult to find a glass slider tub door. 30” standard depth though. 2. We purchased tile and it’s the 2.5”x8” Bedrosians Cloe in green. We’re gonna lay it stacked vertically. 3. Rough plumbing has been completed and the final fixtures will be Delta’s champagne bronze (spout, handheld, and shower head with a separate diverter valve above the mixing valve). 4. Total bathroom size is 60ish square feet so not huge. 5. We’re installing a niche on the wall to the right. 6. Vanity will eventually be a light natural wood finish. Pic 1: original tub surround before demo. Pic 2: chatgpt generated version if we kept the walls as is. Ignore the toilet and cgi weirdness of the fixtures. Niche should be on the short wall to the right. Pic 3: We add an arch to the tub entry. Same cgi issues as above. Note - Adding an arch would take a little more time, but allow us to fit a standard 60” door in the opening with wall bump outs on both sides. I welcome all feedback. submitted by /u/t12ix7er to r/InteriorDesign [link] [comments]

$18,000 Bathroom Remodel Follow Up: Details
Hi everyone, thank you for all the wonderful responses on my previous post! There were many questions and comments about certain design/fabrication aspects and it made me want to dive in to some of the details for those who are interested in that kind of thing. Some overall comments: Total cost was 18k. No costs for design, engineering, and labor. A little for permits. The textured tile comes from the Homey Stripes collection. The vanity is not available for purchase since I designed and built it. Materials was $800. I have not worked in the trades. Specific details: 1-2: The right cabinets are a double decker drawer system that utilizes a push to open mechanism. These are intended to store larger bottles and boxes of commonly used goods such as shampoo, soap, etc., not intended for daily use items. I made them double height as opposed to two level of drawers both to eliminate an extra joint line, but also to avoid having to bend down to open a bottom drawer. 3-6: The vanity was mostly made with 3/4" plywood, along with some bendable plywood for the curved part, and oak for the front faces. Fastening was done with glue, brad nails, and screws. The curved portion top and bottom were cut on a CNC router I built, with more bendable plywood as the face. 7: A smaller detail, but this is the transition between the tile and the custom shelves I made. Also cut on my CNC. 8-11: Progression of the shower, and also a tile layout detail where I lined up the grout joints to avoid awkward extra lines. 12: Diffuse lighting above the tub created with aluminum channel and LED strip lights. This follows code as it is both low voltage, and not hanging. I originally intended for this to be a recessed indirect light, but the ceiling joists ran perpendicular and you can't notch those. 13-15: By far the most difficult tile cut I had to do on this project, or ever. Pretty happy with the results. 16-17: Custom vent cover to match with the rest of the vanity. An off the shelf one would have looked really out of place. 18: Steel trim made to cap each top of drawer/door to protect the end grain and cover the plywood backer edge grain. Every one of these had to be unique since the layout of each top was different. 19: Custom escutcheon plate to cover up a tile mistake I made. Always happy to chat and answer questions! submitted by /u/potentialyuzu to r/Remodel [link] [comments]

Our $13,000 bathroom remodel
After about 4 months, we have finally finished our bathroom remodel costing us about $13,000! The most expensive part was hiring a company to install our glass door. submitted by /u/MolassesGrouchy5615 to r/Remodel [link] [comments]

$10k bath remodel 6x9 (before/after)
We inherited a poorly remodeled bathroom from previous DIY homeowners. The tile was broken from being poorly set and grout had fallen out all over plus the tile was all misaligned and uneven. Not to mention the faux Mexican hacienda style wasn’t jiving in our 1974 ranch house and the toilet was a short model everyone hated using. This bathroom is shared by 4 kids for daily use, and guests too. Kids were constantly splashing water out of the tub and we worried that waiting any longer would mean subfloor damage. We went for heavy tempered glass sliding doors with a soft close to help the kids keep the water in the tub. It was a bitch to install but worth it. We hired out the tile work to make sure we didn’t repeat the errors of previous owners. Wall tile and schluter trim from a local tile store, floor tile, vanity, doors and toilet from Home Depot. Did all the demo and other install ourselves (partner is in the trades and super handy). Kept the tub, didn’t move any plumbing or electrical. Thank god there was no rot or mold in walls or floor. Good thing we had planned to keep the tub because we found it was wet set in concrete! Total cost was just under $10k- cost spreadsheet provided in last pic (VHCOL area for context). This is our forever home and we splurged on tile, shower door and vanity instead of going bottom of the line. Can’t decide on a light fixture though- any suggestions? Ignore ugly bath mat and vent register, both getting replaced. submitted by /u/strangefruitpots to r/Remodel [link] [comments]
