What is everyone's favorite brand and kind of bird seed?
I myself use a mix of Bird & Balcony by Kaytee, Songbird Blend by Audubon Park, Nut & Fruit by Audubon Park, Fancy Finch by Bird Lovers Blend, Wild Bird Food by Wagners, Universal Blend for medium to large and small birds (we have Quakers here) by Wild Harvest, Woodpecker no waste mix by Lyric, and High Energy Plus by Browns. I also use several types of suet and nyjer feeders and will list them if anyone asks. I have 10+ feeders of all kinds located all over my 1.5 acre land. I'm just curious what other seed is everyone using to attract what specific birds? I have a feeder with a camera but haven't set it up yet as the pole I got for it won't go through the snow and frozen ground yet but I'm very excited!! submitted by /u/BirdBrain01 to r/birdfeeding [link] [comments]

What the best of the cheap bird seeds and where are you getting it?
Most birdseed I find is either way too expensive or full of filler junk that the birds just throw on the ground. I know this is just how things work, but I’m wondering what you all have found to be the best of the bird food that doesn’t break the budget. submitted by /u/huntegowk to r/birding [link] [comments]

This guy at work called the furikake on my rice “bird seed”
I pack my own lunch and I’m Asian. I love putting furikake on my rice. A white guy at work saw it and asked me what it was. I explained that it’s just rice seasoning and he laughed and said I was eating bird seed. Another time, I brought moo ping (Thai grilled pork skewers) and he said I was eating platypus tails. At first, I brushed it off but now it’s starting to feel like it’s tiptoeing into racism. He also tends to make these comments loud enough for others to hear and sometimes people laugh along. I don’t know how to deal with this. It’s uncomfortable. It’s not flat out racism but still… EDIT: fyi, I’m currently working and unable to reply. I saw some really helpful comments and I want to take my time with my replies. I will check back again later. Thank you! submitted by /u/BrokeFartFountain to r/TrueOffMyChest [link] [comments]

Bird seed advice
I bought this “premium” mix at a big box store and have quite a lot of it. When I put it in the feeder, birds and squirrels dig through most of it, scattering the bulk over the yard and patio. I’m assuming they’re going for the sunflower seeds, of which there is not much to speak of. (I recently bought another feeder and went to a specialty store to pick up premium oil sunflower seeds.) in the meantime, should I just use up this other bulk mix or is it total garbage and likely causing more harm than good? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/luckygirl721 to r/birdfeeding [link] [comments]

Why the most expensive bird seed gave me the most bang for my bucks
I started backyard bird feeding this year and have been experimenting with different setups. I wanted to share why the most expensive bird seed has actually given me the most value for money. Lots of folks start with getting seemingly reasonably priced wild bird seed mixes, but it’s now more common knowledge that a lot of it is filler and birds drop quite a bit of it, so I skipped this step. I knew that I had to skip straight to the most highly sought after seeds so I don’t end up paying for seeds that birds will throw away anyway. Then at Costco, there was a giant bag of 18kgs (40 lbs) of black oil sunflower seeds for a very reasonable ~$40. I thought it’s Costco they usually have the best stuff but fortunately, I didn’t buy it and read up that night that 75% of the weight and volume is in husks that not only don’t get consumed but make a huge hard to clean mess. The additional tiresome chore of cleaning up the mess made me think of sunflower hearts next. Sunflower hearts were something $60+ for 25 lbs, a significant step up ($2.5 per pound) from the Costco seeds ($1 per pound). But, when I adjust the Costco seeds to account for 75% being lost as husk, that’s more like $4 per pound, significantly more expensive than the sunflower hearts. So I got the sunflower hearts and it caused a full on bar brawl at the bird feeder, the birds were so addicted to it. Unfortunately there was also a LOT of wasted seeds, since the small birds were biting off a piece of each sunflower heart and the rest was dropping to the ground, where unwanted birds like doves and squirrels were showing up. Secondly, they were voracious, the feeder was getting wiped out almost daily. So if I were to adjust the price, this was more like $5 per pound since at least half of each seed was being wasted. Finally, I arrived at crushed sunflower hearts, thinking they’re smaller so they would be less inclined to be bitten and half wasted. But these were even more expensive at like $50 for 18 pounds ($2.8 per pound). In terms of sticker shock, this was a big jump, going from $40 for a giant 40 lbs bag at Costco to $50+ for a punt 18 lbs. But what happened when I put the crushed hearts in was significantly less seed being dropped to the ground, not enough to make doves a constant fixture and not enough to attract squirrels. The smaller birds are going down and getting them. And at the feeder I’ve got the same ruckus going with birds flittering by getting seeds, shooing away other birds, constantly swooping in and out. Maybe a quarter of the feeder is being actually finished daily, which is a huge improvement from wiping out the feeder in 1-1.5 days with regular sunflower hearts. I won’t even begin to try adjusting the per lbs price of the sunflower hearts for how little time they were lasting. So the birdseed with the biggest sticker shock is turning out to be the best bang for my buck for me. It lasts long, doesn’t get wasted as much, is not attracting the wrong birds/squirrels and the peace of mind of not cleaning up after is well worth it for me. Something for beginners to consider when they decide which birdseeds to get. submitted by /u/HippityHoppityBoop to r/birding [link] [comments]

Attracting birds to my backyard: What kind of seed and what style of feeder?
I’m just starting getting into bird photography and I’d like to practice in my backyard before going into the field. -I’m going to be making a platform bird feeder (just a square/rectangle frame with window screen/mesh underneath), would this be sufficient for most species? Something like this: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b5/f0/19/b5f0194360b1bde665979487e55d0297.jpg -As for the seed/food, which few would you recommend? I’m thinking of sunflower hearts, peanuts (normal grocery store peanuts or are there bird specific ones?), and maybe thistle? Thanks! submitted by /u/naturepc to r/birding [link] [comments]

TIFU by getting my wife to buy the bird seed
So I've spent the last 20 minutes hypervnetlating with laughter and I promised my wife I wouldn't tell anyone we know because she's a bit humiliated... so this is my way of getting it off my chest. Since lockdown, my wife and I have found a new appreciation of the garden. It isn't big it, isnt pretty... but it's a way to get outside and, given the cabin fever we've experienced, this is a nice form of escapism. We've always had a bird feeder that we topped up periodically... but with us both working from home, we've enjoyed watching the birds come and go. We got bladk birds, starlings, magpies and more pigeons than you could count. After a while we fed them by hand and now we can even get a few of them to sit on our hand and eat. Its therapeutic in a weird way and naturally we've named some of them and so on. I really recommend it ( #berbs ) Anyway, the wife asks a week ago if she can buy some more bird seed - I said sure, sounds good. I should add my wife isn't from a country that uses the metric system and she's still getting used to it over here. I was in the room whilst she put the order in and - well - maybe when she said "ooo is it ok if I get a fair bit, its cheaper that way?" and "ooo a selection for wild birds, shall I get some of that too?" I didn't do my due diligence. I thought "what the hell, its not like it goes off. We can stick it in the garage". When she told me how much it was, I was shocked but I assumed she got a few bits with the order (again, she is still adjusting to the price of things over here and everything is super expensive to her) So you can probably see where this is going... this morning a delivery arrived. My first clue should have been the size of the van that pulled up outside my house, ready to deliver 4 sacks of 12.5kg of birdseed. The delivery driver, from his safe social distance, lost his shit with laughter as my mind melted as he pulled sack after sack off his van. My wife was in a zoom meeting and when I finally got her attention revealed there's still more to come that's in transit and will arrive tomorrow. Turns out, for some reason, she thought it was 2.5kg to the lb. I don't know if you can picture the amount of birdseed we have, but I'd say -- if we take into account how much is due to arrive tomorrow- I'll expect we have about the size of a small sofa. We have enough birdseed to last our entire lives, we can give it as inheritance after we die... from drowning in birdseed. We've both spent a good part of the last hour crying with laughter amid our sacks. Every time I go into the hallway, I lose my shit a bit. After 6 weeks in lockdown I really think I might be losing my mind. The best bit, we threw some into the garden and the birds don't want to know. Little bastards. TL;DR My wife bought bird seed. She didn't appreciate the nuances of the metric system and bought Pablo Escobar quanitites. The birds don't like it. My house is full of it. I can't. UPDATE- golly, this is what it feels like when Reddit goes bananas? My phone has been going crazy... Anyway, lots of people asked for photos - regrettably, I had already started breaking the sacks down so I cant do all of it.. but here is ONE of the FOUR sacks (12.5kg) we received... cant wait for more tomorrow! Annoyingly its also the most compact of the sacks we got due to smaller seeds. The one with the peanuts was immense! Oh and for 100% honesty I'm squeezing it a bit (Because it isn't a solid mass to hold)... but believe me when I say I am satisfied I got the full amount we paid for, its a solid mass to carry. Also, hello lockdown hair! https://imgur.com/gallery/PdjInrR submitted by /u/EdgarTFriendly to r/tifu [link] [comments]

It’s not just bees that are being harmed by the pesticides called neonicotinoids, it’s birds too. A study in Canada has shown that migrating white-crowned sparrows lose weight just hours after eating seeds treated with the neocotinoid imidacloprid, delaying their onward migration by several days.

Today I made 350 seed bombs, filled with a nectar rich wilfdlower seed mix, to help combat the butterfly and bee population decline. You can disperse them in the neighbourhood after the clay hardens so birds won’t get to the seeds. When the rain comes the clay dissolves and the seeds will sprout.
