We were playing Catan last night with another couple. She had longest road, I had an ore port she desperately needed. She offers me a deal, I decline because it helps her more than me. She got silent. Scary silent. After our friends left she goes, you know what your problem is. You care more about winning a fucking board game than making me happy I laughed because I thought she was joking. She packed a bag and went to her sisters. Texted me this morning that she needs space to think about our relationship. Over catan. Am I insane or is she massively overreacting? We've been together 3 years and she's ending it over a trade in Catan? I love board games. I really do. But every single game night I somehow become the idiot who volunteers to learn the rules. Everyone else is chatting and pouring drinks. I’m hunched over a 20 page rulebook like I’m cramming for an exam. Then we start playin and it begins. Wait can you do that. That’s not how we played last time. Are you sure. Someone squints at me like I’m trying to pull a fast one in a game about wooden sheep. The worst part is when you realize you explained one tiny thing wrong. One thing. And suddenly the whole table is loud. People are rewinding turns. Someone jokes about cheating but it doesn’t feel like a joke. Oh remember when you taught that rule wrong. Yeah thanks for bringing it up again in 2025. Board games are supposed to be fun. Instead I’m acting like a referee getting yelled at by drunk adults. My board game collection started in 2014. At the time, I was only playing video games (Starcraft 2 and Dota 2) I was on a video game forum and came across a post that said "Looking for people to play Catan, Dominion, etc" ...I though to myself those don't sound like video games. So I googled those games and found out they were actually board games. As a kid, I used to love playing Monopoly, Clue, The Witch's Cauldron, Chutes and Ladders etc. I went to my local board game store and picked up a copy of Settlers of Catan. After that, my love for board games was reborn. Recently I've been playing mostly co-op games with my wife. I used to have board game nights with friends and family when I lived in Michigan, but I took a job out in North Dakota 7 years ago, and organizing board game nights has been hard. People out here are more interested in hunting, fishing, shooting guns and riding motorcycles. Regardless, I'm always on the lookout for new games, particularly co-op games. For over 10 years we've been living in a golden era of tabletop game culture. Never in living memory has tabletop gaming been so widely accepted and adored as it has been recently. Over 50% of the modern board game renaissance, by economic volume, has been in the United States. When I was young, there used to be a lot of talk about how to bring more people/diversity into the hobby, and it's been a joy to say that in recent years we've seen the demographics of who plays and designs board games change a lot. Now, I personally believe diversity brings its own values and rewards, but even if you don't, making tabletop games something that was increasingly for everyone meant more revenue for the companies that make games. It turns out if you can get groups like, oh for example, women, who I guess make up about 50% of the population or something trivial like that, to play your games too that means a lot more people and dollars in the hobby. During this time of making board games increasingly accessible to larger groups of people, I have often seen complaints pop up, here, on BGG, and other venues, about "politics" in board games. Whether it's whining about gay "Mamas and Papas" in Viticulture, or people defending Puerto Rico to direct descendants of colonization uncomfortable with the themes, or whatever else, it seems that the bigger our hobby has gotten, the louder these whining complaints have gotten. Well, it brings me no pleasure to say this, but y'all who thought "wokeness had gone too far", you won. People are removing their pronouns from email signatures and changing the names of things from spanish to english. You did it. In exchange for that, you've killed our hobby. The golden era has ended. The tariffs are not just going to increase the cost of board games themselves, they're going to increase the cost of all other goods. This is a hobby that relies on people having expendable incomes, and in the United States that is going to be a very, very small number of people in the coming year. We are going to go back to a time where very few people can afford to design/produce board games, cutting down on diversity of designers. We are also going to go back to a time where these hobbies will be considered prohibitively expensive and niche. We are going to go back to a time when getting people to participate in these hobbies is going to take a lot more effort. Small board game content creators will have to slow down or stop. Local friendly retailers will go out of business. Board game cafes will become limited and increasingly prohibitively expensive (the biggest local board game cafe here was already too expensive for working class people). Sooo my partner planned a triple date with some friends at the board game cafe and I’ve been putting off going with her for probably the last year. I have a ton of anxiety with board games because it takes me forever to understand them and I end up always feeling really stupid. I don’t know if it’s RSD or what but anyways! I thought I was capable of going despite my anxiety and thought it was time to finally have this board game night shes wanted. However…. I can’t. My anxiety has been so bad and I had a panic attack about the whole situation and want to back out. My partner is upset with me and says “everyone doesn’t know the game but you learn and it’s fun” buttttt it’s NOT fun for me. I rather disappear. Now she feels obligated to stay here but I don’t want that. I know she wants to go and is making me feel really bad. I really love reading lists of top board games, so last year I came up with the idea of aggregating the lists of some of my favorite reviewers together into one mega list. When I published the list people seemed to really enjoy it, so I made sure that I updated it for 2020! The math is overall better as well—leveraging Borda count to handle the aggregation (I played with different methods like Monte Carlo and supervised learning techniques and decided on the simpler method ultimately). I also added a bunch more information about the games and the whole list is filterable. So, if you only care about Edward Uhler or Tom Vasel contributed to the list, you can look at that.
