I'm at a loss. I've had these dogs since they were little, me and my girlfriend adopted them together a year ago. We ended up moving to a trailer park, and they kept giving us shit about them till eventually they threatened to kick us out if we didn't get rid of them in 4 days. She just dumped them while I was working overnight as a welder, at a job I hate, they were always the highlight of my day. She's been pressuring me to marry her, we've been dating for a couple years, but she just makes decisions without thinking them through, I was trying to find them another home, but she did this without even telling me. I don't know where they are, they're probably so scared and confused, I just don't know how she could do this to them, they don't know what's going on, it's not their fault. I don't know what to do, they were gonna evict us if we kept them, but this isn't right. I'm bawling my eyes out on the couch because I can't sleep in the same bed as her right now. We moved here from Florida a year ago. Here is an outsiders perspective on Colorado (Aurora) The people - in comparison to Florida the people here are awesome. everyone seems generally nice and helpful. It seems much less divided here, more of a we are all neighbors attitude. Driving - the traffic here is soooo much better. I used to drive 1 hour to go 15 miles in Tampa. I have seen almost no road rage, more considerate drivers, and the quality of cars on the road are much better (FL has no inspections, if it has wheels and moves you.can drive it on the roads) Activities - I'm not all that social so this is biased but the activities here are much better. Hiking in the mountains, the views, the community fairs are all awesome here. You are so close to nature. Government - while the administration here isn't perfect, it is much better here. The state seems to actually care, the trails are very well maintained. The roads are taken care of (considering the conditions of the weather). I feel like my taxes actually benefit the people of this state. Food - This is the only bad part of Colorado I can think of. The food here just isn't that great. Which is ok as it's forcing us to cook much more and saving us money. Overall I feel like Colorado is an amazing state. We will be moving to the west side of Colorado within the year (Rifle) and can't wait to see even more. We plan on being life long Colorado residents. So I just got a Sonos Arc for Christmas (comes Tuesday) and was super excited. Naturally, I started researching whether to add the Sub Mini or rear speakers first, and I was leaning toward the Sub Mini. Then I got a little carried away and added two Era 100s and the Sub Mini to my Amazon cart. While checking out, I realized I could apply for the $250 Amazon credit card to get the gift card. I was instantly approved — score! But here’s the kicker: the purchase didn’t even have to go on the Amazon card. I was able to use my American Express, which had $580 in rewards sitting unused for years. After applying the $250 Amazon gift card and $500 of Amex rewards, my out-of-pocket cost ended up being $51.49. As the title says, I would like to provide some impressions of Switzerland after living here for 2 years as an ‘expat’ - or as I like to say, as an (qualified) immigrant. Not a question - but it will answer many on this subreddit. 2023 - After 6 years of living in Denmark I received a a job offer in CH and I grabbed it immediately. Not only because of the money (it was considered, but it wouldn’t have been so bad in DK), but because of the nature and vicinity to my home country (IT). This post contains of course some generalisations for the sake of giving an idea of how life is here. I’d be curious to know what you readers think and what your experience in Switzerland has been so far. Good: Most people here are polite and respectful and have some common sense. You notice it in the early morning trains - very few people talking, and those who do moderate their tone. You see it when people first let passengers out, before they get in. People throw PET bottles in the PET bins. Cities are mostly clean. Bureaucratic procedures - at least those I had to do are straightforward. You can pay bills in literally 10 seconds. The difference with other countries can be very drastic. This is the first reason why I’d be very happy to spend the rest of my life here. It’s a safe place. I have never felt unsafe in Switzerland - at whatever time, at whatever place. When some of my friends don’t want to go to Reitschule in Bern I can just laugh - it’s way safer than a similar place in any other European country. Good money and plenty of opportunities. Although in the last year this changed a bit with some (planned) layoffs (see Novartis, Nestlé, CSL, etc.), I still see a dynamic job market for those who want to grow professionally. It’s an expensive country but hey, there are basically 5 countries in the whole planet where you can save/invest as much as here considering one has the same job. And no capital gain tax! The cliché ‘you get higher salaries but you also have higher expenses’ when scrutinised carefully just does not hold. Nature. After 2+ years, I’m just in awe every time I take the train and I see mountains everywhere. It is the only country of the 5 I have lived in which is beautiful all year round. Spring - temperature rising, chill coffee-in-the-bed mornings, the green comes back. Summer - hiking, lakes, festivals, and so much more. Fall - amazing foliage, markets all around. Winter - mesmerising snowy landscapes, skis and sleds, more markets. Other random things: people read. They go to museums. Things work most of the time. There are plenty of ways to optimise expenses. Actually, not many cons. But: A difficult thing to do is to build a social circle - which comes also with a certain age (30+) and the working rhythms. Still, opportunities to meet people are somehow limited and the Swiss, having their comfortable social circle already established, don’t really have a reason to expand it or to join another. Yes, I joined a sport informal club (climbing). Yes, I learnt German (a nice B2 by now). I even go to a book club! 😀 And still I find myself longing for a bit more integration and true, lasting relationships. I am sure it will come with time. My experience with the health system has been so far not worth the money that I pay towards it. Besides being very expensive, I felt doctors are way less prepared than they should be and not as empathic and understanding as I expect a doctor to be. I don't have any hope to see a change, but when a patient is seen basically as money, the priority becomes the money - and not the patient. Overall - I couldn't be happier. Those I met who are not happy they are either serial complainers or have not traveled enough to know how good of a time we are and we can have here in Switzerland. Cheers everyone. So we have had our Samsung 2 in 1 washer dryer heat pump for a year now, so I figured I'd do a review based on the last year. For us, it has been a game changer for our laundry. It is really nice to have all the capability of this machine and the convenience of it with a young family. We have not gone easy on it, we run everything from clothes, bedding, our dogs beds and blankets. The self clean cycles are really nice and seem to work well, our condenser coils are basically perfectly clean and the performance hasn't changed one bit. We were a little worried that the long cycle times would be a bottle neck for us, but because it runs and does everything, we are able to start laundry overnight or if we will be out for a while so it's actually been easier to keep up with laundry versus having a traditional set. I have also noticed we are using less detergent too. I set up both of the auto dispensers for detergent and we have had to fill them maybe 4 times in the last year. Even the largest loads only use 1-2 ounces of detergent. Overall we are super happy with it and I would definitely get it again if I had to make the decision. It saddens me to write that in 2025, these are blatant lies and a disrespectful middle finger to anyone who has any passion for language learning. Now? It's a bloated, AI-infested husk, squeezing every last monetary drop from users while punishing those who dare learn without a premium subscription. This once-revolutionary app has become a masterclass in corporate betrayal, just short of the owl reaching his own wicked claws into your wallet and helping himself. I've watched this app devolve since 2015. I’ve been a loyal user for 10 years. A decade. After achieving my longest and most successful run in 2025, I willingly threw my 1600-day streak away due to their latest atrocities. I'm done. This company is no longer revolutionizing language learning. It's showcasing corporate gluttony disguised as innovation. If you're considering downloading Duolingo, don't. You're just fattening the wallets of executives who've long abandoned any passion for education. Here's a litany of the app's most egregious sins, each a nail in the coffin of what was once a joyful tool: Gem overhaul & aggressive monetization (2018–2019): What started as a fun reward system morphed into a paywall. Gems (lingots), once freely earned for practice, now demand your credit card for once basic features like extra practice sessions, timed challenges, reviewing mistakes, and word matching are now locked behind the subscription. Removal of In-App Forums and Discussion Sections (2021): They axed the vibrant community hubs where learners swapped insights and clarified grammar. Every lesson used to have its own comment section where learners asked questions, shared mnemonics, explained grammar, and helped each other. Duolingo deleted all of them. Overnight, millions of useful explanations vanished, and learners were left completely alone with no place to ask “why is it said this way?). Now, if you need help understanding, you’re forced to pay for half-baked AI "help." It's like ripping the soul out of a classroom. It’s dehumanizing and utterly ineffective. Removal of Friend Leaderboards (2021): Let's not forget the 2021 removal of friend leaderboards, which stripped away that spark of rivalry competition with your close friends. Now there are only public leagues with complete strangers. Frequent Course Restructurings and Learning Path 2.0 Debacle (2021–2023): Endless "updates" that reset your progress, loop you into redundant lessons, and strip away any semblance of user choice.The 2022 switch to the linear Path removed the ability to somewhat choose what topics you’d like to study. No more flexibility, the Linear Path 2.0 is one-size-fits-none. Mass Layoffs of Real Linguists for Soulless, Incompetent AI (2024–2025): In a cold-blooded purge, Duolingo laid off a huge portion of real, talented language experts who crafted nuanced courses and replaced them by handing the reins over to AI. The result? Unnatural phrasing, creepy sounding robotic stories, mangled pronunciations, grammar mistakes, wrong translations, and bizarre cultural references that no human would ever write. Content quality plummeted, mistakes go unfixed despite reports, and the once-charming character voices are now cold and monotoned. They massacred passion for penny-pinching automation. Removal of Post-Correct Answer Translations (Mid-2025): You used to get an instant English translation right after a correct answer so you could confirm your answer. No more. Did you just get lucky… who knows? Now, you're left guessing if you truly understood, unless you shell out for premium perks. It's a petty barrier that erodes confidence and can turn triumphs into tedious hunts for clarity. Apocalyptic Descent from Free Learning to Hearts to Energy System Hell (Introduction of Hearts 2019, Replaced by Energy October 2025): This is the final insult that made me kill my marathon streak. Hearts were bad enough, limiting sessions by mistakes, but at least perfection still let you binge-learn until you got 5 answers wrong. Energy? A tyrannical timer that drains regardless of accuracy. Perfection is punished the same as mistakes. This system caps you at maybe two short lessons if you’re lucky before demanding cash to "refill." It's a predatory weaponization against eager minds. Who punishes success? Duolingo, apparently, in their quest to force-feed subscriptions. Aggressive Ads and Notifications (Worsened 2023–2025): Intrusive pop-ups, long video ads post-lesson, and the relentless buzz of push notifications guilt-tripping you about lost streaks, league demotions, and limited-time offers like a swarm of angry bees. It's psychological warfare, designed to wear you down. Subtle? Hardly. Annoying? Absolutely. Duolingo’s goal is not education anymore, it's exploitation. Their new mission statement? “To extract the maximum revenue while delivering minimum viable education one soul-crushing paywall at a time”. Their tagline? “Learn a language for free... until the energy runs out. Forever… as long as your wallet is open”. Because hey, greed speaks every language. The AI takeover betrayed the humans behind it, laying off real talent for soulless robots. These changes scream one truth: the app's soul is sold. You deserve better. Respect yourself, your education, your morals, and your wallet by abandoning this vile dumpster fire while your love for languages is still intact. Do yourself a favor and choose real alternatives that still respect learners (2025 edition): Anki (free, spaced repetition done right). Clozemaster (gamified sentence practice, no artificial limits). Language Transfer (free audio courses by a human who actually cares). Migaku (browser extension for immersive learning with Netflix/Youtube). italki or Preply (affordable 1-on-1 lessons with actual teachers). Pimsleur: (30 minute audio lessons with real human voices, worth every cent). Good old fashioned textbooks, note taking, movies, vlogs, and music in your target language. I’m not mad about paying. Good projects deserve funding and I pay and have paid for good language content. What guts me is watching a company that once swore to keep language learning accessible and free forever deliberately cripple the free experience with energy cages, AI slop, vanished communities, etc. until learning feels like punishment. I gladly support real value. This betrayal of their original vision hurts far more than any price tag ever could. I once wrote a glowing review of Duolingo. Now? One star, and that's generous. [1st photo of Lebi || 2nd photo of Lebi and Mango (15) who I adopted 3 years ago and now is by himself without Lebi] It's been a week and a couple of hours since I received that damn call from the vet's clinic telling me that my little angel Lebi passed away from complications after dental surgery. After reviewing all the medical reports we (my vet friend and I) concluded that Lebi had a previous unknown condition even though I did the blood & urine tests with an electrocardiogram with an ultrasound, there was no possibility to know that he had a pulmonar condition or at least it was not seen in the images or test results. I have been devastated emotionally actually but somewhat calm for which I'm confused because I thought I would be feeling way WAY worse than I feel right now and don't get me wrong, I miss him and cry everyday looking for him in every corner in my house, but I also feel calm that I gave him the life he deserved and try to loved him as much as possible always looking for the best quality of life for him (thus the dental surgery) with anual tests perform to check his health regularly. As of today, I can only say that life happens when you least expected, and even though you try to do everything right there is always a possibility for everything to go to shit so PLEASE hug your sweet angels, give them the extra Churu and cherish each day that your are able to wake up with them and go to the bed with them as well. I will forever miss you Lebiand I'm calm knowing all the love we shared and the things I did for your quality of life but sometimes life has other plans that we cannot change. Other than a period of time where I was very ill for 3 months I was doing reviews once a day for 60-75% of the time it took me to finish my journey. I have no problem reading kanji or new words from which they are derived and can read pretty much anything in Japanese immediately by looking at it naturally without a problem from originally knowing zero kanji when I started. I also learned a ton of new example words as well probably easily like 500+. Best purchase of my life since I started 25 years ago. And I couldn’t be happier, the big factors I had to consider was the new job has more opportunity for growth in the future, but it would have added 1 - 1.5 hours to my commute each day. I had a huge fear that my current employer would treat me differently because of this situation but they haven’t at all, and I’m working 4-7 hours of over time now (which I wouldn’t have been able to at the other job because of child care limitations and the extra commute. Advice from this sub urged me to push for more money and because of it I’m taking home $200+ a week, and that’s huge for my family. First up, this plus the $118.7 mil Strange earned overseas has pushed Disney's worldwide gross to over $6 bil, the second time ever for a studio (last year Universal made $6.98 bil). Keep in mind Moana still has the prime 5 day Thanksgiving slot ahead as well as the upcoming ultimate test for just how damn popular the Star Wars brand is with Rogue One, so Disney way well become the first to pass $7 bil. It wasn't just Disney records with Strange, as this is the 14th MCU film to premiere at #1 that means the MCU films are now tied with the Pixar brand for the most consecutive #1 premieres in a row. That means if Guardians of the Galaxy 2 premieres at #1 Marvel will clinch the record for good as while Inside Out did have an incredible opening it stopped the Pixar #1 premiere record by premiering at #2 against the insane juggernaut that was Jurassic World. However these are just nominal awards so let's talk about the actual success of Doctor Strange. The film was the second best solo origin film for Marvel behind Iron Man and the 8th best comic book origin story opening of any kind. The film did very well on IMAX, the biggest IMAX release ever which brought in $24.2 mil worldwide this weekend. 3D was also a a big as 45% of Doctor Strange sales this week were in 3D. The real surprise was China, where the film opened to $44.3 mil mostly due to the apparent huge popularity of Benedict Cumberbatch and his show Sherlock over there. That's actually the third best MCU Chinese opening behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, so expect very big things for the film there. Domestically, Doctor Strange should hold very well with little competition and an A on Cinemascore but Moana should slow it down by the end of the month. Still the film should easily clear $200 mil domestic by the end of its run and marks yet another major success for Marvel. Maybe it's the popularity of the Justin Timberlake song, the lack of recent animated kids films, or people still remember the dolls but Trolls surpassed expectations coming at #2 with $45.6 mil. Last year saw the release of The Peanuts Movie in the same slot and Trolls performed about the same. Trolls does have some breathing room in its odd Novemeber slot as the only new colorful kids film option before Moana takes that all away. Helping the film is certainly the impressive international appeal where the film has earned $104 mil so far, especially with good showings in France and UK. While the film probably isn't looking at a massive success it will likely clear $300 mil worldwide and could hold well with its A Cinemascore. While critics and audience reviews have embraced the return of Mel Gibson, the box office didn't translate as Hacksaw Ridge came in at #3 with a disappointing $14.7 mil. It's hard to pin down exactly why the film received very good reviews yet couldn't translate to box office. The most obvious could be Mel himself, who's still closely associated with the defaming remarks he made several years ago. The marketing in the US notably left off Mel's name in the posters and trailers but it's hard to know if public rejected it because of Mel or because they didn't know it was by Mel. A more sociopolitical reason may be that in the final throes of a bitter election most people wanted escapism with singing trolls and magic wizards than bloody violent war. Perhaps the most likely though is that old eternal boogeyman, the marketing which was fairly absent and perhaps so worried about the association with Mel downplayed the main character's important religious beliefs which may have brought out a Christian audience. The bright spot for Hacksaw though may be what little audience it had which was almost primarily over the age of 35 and gave the film an A on Cinemascore (it was a great weekend at the movies according to that poll), which could help the film have decent legs. Still this probably isn't the major comeback Gibson was probably hoping for and any possible Oscar noms will come too late to help.
