It seems like about once a week I see a post on here about someone asking why their tucked-in shirt looks like this and not like this (not trying to put anyone on blast! Just needed a quick example). The answer is always the same: wear higher waisted pants! I know this can be a bit scary. I am a Millennial. I lived most of my life in Levi's 511s, the default silhouette for men's trousers (for my generation): low waisted and tapered. I'm here to implore you, beg you even, to give fuller cut pants a try. Higher waist, fuller legs, straighter cut. It may be uncomfortable at first, it may feel like you're cosplaying, but trust me, once you get used to it, you will never go back. And this isn't just trend-chasing. I am not asking you to embrace Gen Z baggy jeans. What I'm suggesting is middle-of-the-road, immune to trends, classic trouser cuts. The tricky thing about transitioning from something like a 511 to a higher waisted pant is that the sizing you are used to won't work the same. For a high waisted pant to fit just right the waist has to be snug-- ideally they would stay put without a belt. If you're used to wearing a 32 in a lower waisted pant, there's a good chance a 32 in a higher waisted pant just won't fit you. So the main point of this guide is to give options that are cheap and that you could fairly easily go find and try on in the real world (for two of the examples, at least), or that you could order multiple pairs without breaking the bank. And from there, you'll have a better idea of how higher waisted pants fit you, and you can explore more options. So without further ado, here's three budget-friendly options for getting into higher waisted pants. All of these sit in the 11.5"-12" rise range. If you haven't worn higher waisted pants before, it's likely you are used to something like a 10"-11" rise. Trust me, even 1" will make a huge difference in look and feel. 1. Jeans - Wrangler Cowboy Cut Yes. Wrangler 13WMZ Cowboy Cut. Why? A bunch of reasons: They're $60. They're 100% cotton. They aren't even that high of a rise: mine are 11.5". The pockets actually sit on your ass, instead of hugging under. These are such a great starting point for getting a feel for wearing higher waisted jeans. If you're used to lower rise, stretch pants, this is where you should start. The other great thing about Wranglers is they are not hard to go find in the US. There are a ton of Boot Barn/workwear stores all over the country that carry just about every Wrangler cut. Go try some on! With jeans, more than any other kind of pant, you really should steer away from stretch. 100% cotton only. They will look better, age better, and generally just have more character. Even budget, mass-produced, Wranglers jeans look miles better than their stretchy counterparts. The bonus option here is to go with the "rigid" line. These are raw, unwashed denim. They will fit boxy and weird at first, but as they conform to your body and wear in, they will look better than pre-washed denim. And they're cheaper! Here's a good thread from menswearguy on jeans. 2. Work Pants - Carhartt There's a few different routes you can go with Carhartt. The key here is to stay with their "loose" fit (the roomiest, highest rise) and 100% cotton options. And, I know what you're thinking: "I'll be swimming in these!" Yes! These are big pants! But trust me, they won't look as ridiculous as you think. And once you get used to the freedom of movement you have in these, you'll wonder why you ever wore constricting or stretchy pants. And again, the price is right. I think even if you're not super comfortable wearing Carhartts as a fashion choice, they are great for so many other things: yard work, camping, hiking. And the harder you beat them up, the better they'll look. And, like Wranglers, these are fairly easy to go find in the real world and try on. Washed Duck Dungaree - standard work pant, extra pockets! Double Knee Dungaree - the classic double-knee Utility Work Pant - lightest option, look the most like "regular" pants 3. Not-Quite-Work-Pants, Not-Quite-Chinos - Ben Davis Ben Davis are the biggest pants of the bunch. And they break the fabric rule: they are 50/50 cotton/polyester. But they're thick and hold their shape, and they're generally hardy and well made. These are a great alternative to Dickies. The cool thing about Ben Davis pants is you can dress them up or down. You could wear these with nice leather shoes or boots and a tucked in buttondown, or with a sweater and sneakers. You could wear these to the office or the skate park. The styling on the website is not flattering, however. If you're nervous about how big these bad boys are, they have a trim fit, too. Some Final Thoughts The biggest reason you should try bigger pants imo, is because overall they look better. When you wear pants that sit closer to your natural waist, and fit correctly, and aren't tapered, you get a more flattering silhouette, every time. If you look at the silhouettes of some of those pics I linked above, of 511s and more tapered pants, you'll see how the pants buckle and cling to the waist and knees and calves in a way that is really unflattering. When you size up and give those areas a bit more room, your legs will look longer and fuller. Tucking in shirts will look and feel better. Another thing to think about is how the pants sit on your shoes, that is, the length. This can make or break a fit. This is almost esoteric, secret-sauce, type knowledge. There's no single answer. Wrangler obviously look classic when they stack over cowboy boots. But they might look silly stacked over vans. Personally, I give mine a double roll over Converse most of the time. Carhartts can look good stacked over boots; but they can look sloppy, too. Ben Davis come pressed and will sit quite straight if they aren't too long; but they can buckle weirdly if they hit your shoes. I got mine tailored so they hover just above my shoes and stay straight. This will ultimately be up to you and how you want to wear your pants. Carhartt jacket Carhartt Canvas double front pants So here is my quadrillion update on my waxed stuff. I went ahead and put a third layer of wax on my pants and my jacket. I’m going to go ahead and say they’re completely saturated at this point. I have hit them with the heat gun three times and they have been hanging for at least over a week now. They’re a little waxy to the touch now, almost no matter what I do before I did the third layer, which is actually the fourth layer on my jacket, third layer on the pants. They were not really waxy to the touch at all. They’re not incredibly waxy, but they are a little. If anybody wants to see, let me know and I’ll post pictures. Note - After this final waxing, I was just finishing up hitting the jacket with the E gun for the last time and the freaking zipper fell off, all this work. I feel like for basically nothing now. Some Tools To Help You Succeed in Fashion: Measuring Tape - Knowing your measurements is essential to finding clothes that fit when ordering online and translating between men's and women's clothing. Get someone to help you measure. Always check the size guide. Boob Tape to ensure button-downs stay closed and look uniform - I'm a B/C cup, and my girlfriend is a DDD; we both recommend Hollywood Secrets, which is available at most US-based drug, shoe, and beauty stores. This shit should be your best friend. Do you ever wonder how folks avoid boob gap? This is how. Well, this and a good sports bra. Ideas and Principles to Adopt: READ: Always read fit reviews on websites offering clothing, and be honest about your weight and height with yourself as you read them to see how you would fit these clothes. Also, review clothing that you like! Don't be afraid to add your weight and height to help others as well. Say you’re masc or butch! Help a friend in need. Know your body shape and seek out fashion influencers, advice, etc., that match your body type. For example, if you're curvy, don't follow and look for fashion advice from petite, curve-less, skinny people. That will discourage you and make you want to throw in the towel before you even get into fashion. I'd also argue that's a form of self-harm and, if my girlfriend's experiences are anything to go off of, will turn you off of trying to pay attention to fashion entirely and only gravitate toward "safe things" like hoodies and t-shirts and jeans. Don't be afraid to tailor your clothes, or to learn how to tailor your clothes. Don't be afraid to wear a bra or binder that changes how your breasts lay on your chest - or no bra at all. You can wear a sports bra or binder (if that's your jam) or a more shaped bra depending on what your support needs are and what you want out of the shape of the shirt. It is okay!!!! to have tits and wear a men's shirt, it's all about having the right bra or binder, and probably some boob tape too. Sometimes you have to spend money to get clothes that fit you well - An issue I keep encountering when I read lesbian fashion advice pretty much anywhere is that there are two price points, one is as cheap as humanly possible, and the other assumes a level of disposable income that a lot of people just don’t have. The thing is, sometimes money must be spent to either get clothes that work or help clothes to fit you better. Paying the extra money for the queer brand, or to take that pair of pants that looks so fucking good on you to the tailor is a good thing. There is no shame in spending money to look good. Get comfortable with with saving up for good quality pieces, or for looking at second-hand options. Step 1: Colors According to the Vivienne Files, a good capsule wardrobe has two core colors (e.g., black and brown), and three accent colors (e.g., red, white, and blue). This is not a how to build a capsule wardrobe post, but the general principles are the same. You probably have one or two colors you like on yourself, one of them is probably black. Figure out what the other colors are! My (very white/warm autumn) colors are baby pink, navy blue, cranberry red, gray, and black with some brown and tan accents. My girlfriend's (Native Hawaiian/Italian/cool winter) colors are mustard yellow, olive green, sunset orange, black, and grey with some brown, cranberry red/maroon (she wears so much do this), and navy blue accents. Your colors are your own! Figure out what makes you look good, and make sure to note them down for looking at clothes. Don't buy clothes in colors you look bad in! Step 2: Sizing & Getting Comfortable So here's the kicker: men's clothing doesn't work on everyone's bodies. Women's bodies are, unfortunately, built differently than men's, particularly if you have curves. If this is rough for you or causes you dysphoria, I'm sorry, it sucks. This is a post with some strategies to shop for clothes in the dreaded women's section if that's what you need to do in a way that suits your personal presentation choices (e.g., how to find or make clothing made 'for women' work for your body). Below are some key pointers that are useful for getting started. Firstly, measure yourself! Here are useful measurements for shopping for clothes. In all cases, don't pull the measuring tape tight to ensure accuracy. Otherwise, you'll feel very uncomfortable in the clothes you try on. Shoulder to Shoulder (esp. important if you have broad shoulders.) Bicep circumstance (measure around the widest part of your bicep while flexing) Many women's clothes have small armholes. Knowing this measurement helps to avoid looking like an overly jacked dude in a too-small shirt, ripping seams when you put on a shirt, or wearing shirts that are so tight that you can't bend your arm. This is a good measure of if you need to size up in a shirt because the rest of the measurements can be tailored. Bust (measure across your nipples) Underbust (measure around your ribcage under your breasts) Waist (measure from the narrowest part of your waist -- probably right around your belly button) Hips (measure from the widest part of your hips) Butt (Around the widest part of your ass) Inseam (measure from your ankle up into your crotch) Find clothes that fit your measurements - not clothes you instantly like or safely gravitate towards, but clothes that fit your measurements broadly and diversely - at a department store or a place like Target, Macy's, TJ Maxx, M&S, Primark, etc. that has a wide variety of inexpensive clothing, and try them on, drawing from both the men's and women's sections of the store. This is how you start to figure out what works for your body type and why you have to try things on broadly rather than just what feels "safe.'' Try on the following in a few different styles: Slacks, Jeans, Work Pants, Shorts When selecting clothes to try on, attempt to locate pieces that seem more gender-neutral to you in the women's section, such as straight-legged or boot-cut jeans or slacks (especially if you're curvy). In the men's section, look for athletic cut pants if you have any kind of curve, as these have more flex built into them to accommodate lifting butt on guys. NOTE ON PANT SIZING: Some clothing companies - especially those catering to a broader audience - use your waist size (e.g., 28-inch, 34-inch) as the size of the garment in question. Other companies use different sizing scales (such as a 10, 14, or 18). KNOWING YOUR MEASUREMENTS WILL HELP YOU TO USE THE SIZE GUIDE STORES PROVIDE TO TRANSLATE BETWEEN THE TWO. Button Up Shirts (note: a button down shirt is a shirt that has buttons to secure the collar down, which is why most shirts you'll see are button up, not down shirts). In the men's section, try on both a slim and a regular cut. Slim will be a tighter fit, particularly if you have curves, regular fit may look boxy on you in the wrong bra. In the women's section, try and find blouses that look more masculine -- this will be found by leaving the 'young person' section and going into the professional women's workwear section of the store. Some of these shirts may have darts, some may be cut baggier than others. Try both. Try and grab at least one fun young man Hawaiian shirt, as those are a fixture of masc wardrobes. T-shirts/Tanks (or vests) Grab some men's v-necks (higher neck) and some women's v-necks (deeper neck, less prone to giving boob shelf if the girls are big); Men and women's crew neck t-shirts, as well as thicker strapped men's and women's tank tops -- these should fit more loosely in a men's fit, or more form fitting in a women's fit. Sweaters/Crewnecks Usually unisex sizing -- so just grab one you like. My general advice for the trying on clothes part of this is to potentially also try on two different kinds of bras. If you've got bigger breasts, you probably want a more structured and supportive bra. This could potentially be the one you wear into the store, if you've got a fave, or this could be one you try on. Also, grab a bralette/unsupportive bra and a good sports bra with medium to high support. When looking at shirts try each with each bra. When trying on pants or shorts, drop a big squat and check if you have duck butt. Step 3: Black Slacks Think of this as an investment. The first thing you'll want is to be able to build outfits that you can dress up or down. This starts with a solid pair of slacks or trousers in a #suiting color. In terms of fit, I would suggest that you avoid having these be super baggy or super slim fitting. Slim or Skinny fitting will make the outfit look feminine (in terms of slacks) and baggy tends to make people look like their clothes are swallowing them. Neither of these looks is good for a wardrobe staple. Some advice from r/butchlesbians: Hem or cuff all pants so there is no excess fabric bunching at the ankle – this makes you look shorter. It is worth it to get nicer slacks hemmed for this reason alone. Keywords to look for: Trousers, Slacks, (and for a slightly more casual look, chinos) Avoid: Cargo pockets, drawstrings, no belt loops, pocket stitching on the pant leg, or double knees. Slacks cut like Wildfang's Empower Trouser, H&M's basic Slacks, Old Navy's Built-in Flex Slim Rotation Chinos or High-Waisted OGC Chino Pants, Both&'s Marlo, Daper Boi’s Slim Fit Chino Pants or Everlane's Utility Barrel Pant or Stretch Twill 5 Pocket Pant have a nice silhouette that can be made casual or dressed up should the occasion call for it. Note: If you look at the reviews and see pictures of either models or owners of the pant style in question and you don't like how it looks on a body type similar to yours, don't order them as returning clothes can be a pain in the ass with time limits and other challenges. However, if you're in a store and can try them on, give them a shot! You might be surprised! Brand Recommendations: $20-40 USD: Target, H&M, Old Navy, Uniqlo $41-80 USD: Gap, Uniqlo, Androgynous Fox $81-120 USD: Everlane, Wildfang, Both&, Dapper Boi $120+ USD: Peau De Loup, Haute Butch, Kirrin Finch Caveat: As I'm sure you've noticed, to buy clothes designed for queer people by other queer people, you have to spend more money. I wish this wasn't the case, as these companies price out most queer folks with how much their clothing costs. However, as these trousers are an investment, it's worth spending more for them and supporting a queer brand if you have the funds to do so. Also, many of these are available on resale sites like Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace. If you know your size, you can easily get pants from Wildfang and other queer-catering brands for far less money (e.g., I paid $35 for my Wildfang empower trousers on Poshmark). Step 4: Button-Down Shirts Button-downs are the staple of any masculine wardrobe -- you're going to end up owning about ten of them. The unfortunate thing about button-downs, though, is that they're a pain in the ass to figure out, fit-wise. Men's shirts tend to fit women with larger breasts or wider hips poorly because (the vast majority of) men don't have large breasts or hips. So when shopping for a button-up, try to take this into account and don’t let not fitting into a men’s shirt ruin your day. There are options! A good button-up should fit your shoulders without there being a ton of space to move around (i.e., you should be able to raise your arms, but you should not be able to grab handfuls of fabric on each shoulder and pull. It also should fit your neck. Men tend to have wider necks than women, which means their shirts are built to accommodate this fact. Gaping collars make shirts look oversized and, therefore, visually look like they fit you poorly, even if they fit the rest of your body well. When shopping for button-ups, try to avoid gaping collars. A good button-up shirt is also one you can comfortably button the whole way down. This includes the last button. A big problem I see with many masc or butch lesbians is that they’re wearing shirts that don’t fit their hips, while they do fit their shoulders, chest, and neck. A solution for this is tucking your shirt in, yes, but sometimes you don’t want to do that, and having a shirt that can be versatile with both a tucked-in and tucked-out look is essential for this wardrobe staple. The good news is that many button-down options are available for women’s bodies that don’t have darts or a feminine cut. However, sometimes, if you’ve got hips, you need a feminine cut that has more space through the hips. Companies like Androgynous Fox, Wildfang, Bridge & Burn, Dapper Boi, Peau De Loup, and Kirrin Finch have all taken this into account in designing shirts that fit women’s bodies. But there are cheaper options as well. Target’s men's section is where I’d start. If you can make a Goodfellow and Co button-down shirt work for you, you’re golden. Try on a few of them. This said, if for whatever reason, a men’s button down doesn’t work for you – take a look at Androgynous Fox's The Mickey, Urban Outfitter’s Cooper Solid Button Down, H&M’s Muscle Fit Cotton Shirt (more space in the chest for breasts) or Wildfang’s The Essential Oxford Button Up. If you have money to burn, Kirrin Finch’s Frankie is cartoonishly expensive but quite worth the price. Everlane’s Relaxed Oxford Shirt is also quite pricey but goes on sale often. In terms of plus size recommendations, Wildfang, Androgynous Fox, and Kirrin Finch all accommodate a wide variety of body types. I’ve also found that Morning Witch's Button Down Shirts (Deathly Bouquet) go up to 4XL. Maurice's Plus Size 90s Prep Relaxed Button Up Shirt and Old Navy’s Linen Blend Button Down Boyfriend Shirt go up to 4X. What’s important to note here is that these sizes are built to accommodate how women’s bodies grow in size rather than how men’s bodies do – these are shirts that provide a boyish, masculine look while also being designed with bodies like yours in mind. Styling Tips: A short-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear underneath a sweater, crew-neck sweatshirt, or open in the front. A long-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear buttoned up and tucked in—it also looks more professional. This master post is essential when reflecting on fit, style, color, etc. It’s also written by fashionable, and nerdy-about-fashion, guys, and has some good product recommendations. A good pair of jeans can look professional (if they are in a cut that looks professional [i.e., not excessively baggy]) or casual, depending on how they are styled. What we want from these jeans is a silhouette that isn’t too form-fitting - but also doesn’t look like it is oversized. Currently, fashion for young people is shifting away from more form-fitting cuts of jeans into baggy styles of jeans – which is fine if that floats your boat. Still, for a pair of jeans that you are turning into a masculine wardrobe staple, I recommend sticking to the more classic cuts: Boot, Straight Leg, Slim, Athletic Slim, or Skinny. I am including skinny here because sometimes, particularly if you are bottom-heavy, skinny jeans can be very slimming, while baggy jeans only work on particular body types (such as those who are skinny, slim, apple-shaped) and tend to feminize bodies that aren’t that type. Vintage Levis are a staple of hipster men’s fashion these days (writing in summer 2024) because they sit at men’s natural waists, which makes them better than a lot of current cuts of men’s jeans to fit a body with hips or an ass. If you’re short and have curves, particularly in the hip, try bootcut jeans. Levi’s makes great vintage-style bootcut women’s jeans (my girlfriend’s go-to) as well as the 315s, which are shaping in a similar look. For a more classically masculine look in women’s jeans, you can also try the higher-waisted 80s Mom Jeans which are tapered, or the straight-fit, mid-rise wedgie that is a favorite recommendation of dyke fashion bloggers. r/mensfashionadvice also suggests the following if you can make men’s pants work for you: Levis 510 (skinny), 511 (slim), 512 (slim taper), 513 (slim straight), 514 (looser slim straight). Bullet point from curvy girlfriend: Don’t be afraid to mid or high-waist it. Levi’s Wedgie only goes up to a 34-inch waist – HOWEVER, I wear a 32, have a 36-inch natural waist and a 47-inch around the widest part of my butt [and a 27-inch inseam] – so I’d encourage you to try them on if you are even remotely close to these measurements. My go-to pair of jeans is the Goodfellow athletic cut jeans from Target (linked in a lighter wash). I’ve also had good luck with Urban Outfitters BDG brand’s vintage slim fit jean (men’s) and their high-waisted cowboy jean (women’s). Additionally, Old Navy’s OG Slim-Straight High/Mid-Waisted Jean (also in curvy) is sized for women (on a 00-30 scale as opposed to 24-50-inch waist scale). Bear your measurements in mind when looking at their stuff. My girlfriend has had good luck with Lee jeans (which are sold at Wal-Mart) and jeans from Express. I have enjoyed my jeans from Nordstrom x Wildfang’s collaboration and my skinny jeans from the Gap. The thing with jeans is that you probably already have a pair or three that you like. What I’d focus on is for more dressy jeans, go for a darker wash with no rips or tears, but for casual jeans, whatever works, works. Don’t let fashion snobs bully you out of clothing that you like and makes you feel confident, or tell you that the cut of jeans that works for you isn’t fashionable anymore (I’m looking at you, Gen-Z), and understand that if it works for you, it works for you and you are the one who makes it fashion. Don’t throw out your skinnies – if you want to wear baggy jeans go for it! Remember that everyone’s style is different but that if something is too baggy or too skinny it tends to look unprofessional. Step 6: T-Shirts Derek Guy (the menswear blogger), has an incredible Twitter thread on how to find a t-shirt that fits you well. Start Here. If you can’t be bothered, essentially he argues that there is a certain ratio between a person’s torso and legs in those classic pictures of men in t-shirts that we masc folks covet as like, fashion goals: slightly cropped torso, long legs. T-shirts are, in general, cut long because t-shirt companies need to sell across multiple torso sizes. This is why styles like the half/french tuck on the t-shirt are so popular with fashion modeling and photography – the shirt is simply too long for both the model’s torso and where their pants sit on their legs. Point being: cheap men’s t-shirts - a staple of most masculine-leaning lesbian wardrobes - tend to sit oddly on a lot of bodies – particularly if you’re shorter, have noticeable breasts or hips, or are rounder about the middle. Buying a 10-pack of Hanes or Fruit of the Loom t-shirts at Walmart will get you places if you have a very specific body type, but most likely, you don’t have that body type. That’s okay! Good quality t-shirts both last longer, and fit you better, but you have to pay more for them. Don’t get sticker shock at spending 20 bucks on a t-shirt if it fits you well and works for your body. So how do you, in trying to find more masculine looks, find a stylish t-shirt that works? Ideally, a t-shirt should fit about 1/3 of your body – most men’s t-shirts are cut to fit 1/2 of a man. Given that you are - most likely - not a six-foot tall man, you probably want to focus on the silhouette that falls just above or just below your hips. Boxier cuts, if you’re slim, look very good on women with breasts. You can also achieve this by tucking in a t-shirt at your natural waist. Don’t french tuck, that was horrific advice on Queer Eye. Cut and Style There are three necklines and one style that I think are particularly useful for wardrobe building: Crew neck (think your traditional collar on a sweatshirt or sweater that doesn't have a hood) This is your basic ‘unisex’ t-shirt A crew neck with jeans or slacks looks effortlessly classy or casual, depending on how it is styled. V-Neck (shaped like a v, obviously) In women’s clothing, v-necks tend to be a bit deeper A v-neck t-shirt under a button-up or flannel allows you to comfortably button up the shirt to the neck without having too many layers of fabric in the way. Henley (buttons at the neck) In women’s clothing, henleys tend to cut lower with more of a boat or scoop-cut neckline before the buttons start. A henley can be worn with anything but looks great underneath a chunky sweater – the kind you find at Goodwill and are like score. Baseball Style Tees (Typically with full sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves - though they do come in short sleeves too) Characterized by having sleeves of a different color than the rest of the shirt and the triangular cut of the sleeves going into the neckline of the shirt is good for people with broad shoulders. Baseball tees make everyone look masculine - they’re practically designed this way. I think they’re a positive staple in anyone’s wardrobe if you’re trying to create a masculine vibe. So try some t-shirts from both the women’s and men’s sections in a place like Target or a department store. Try the athletic and boxy fits and maybe some of the shirts with deeper v-necks, too. Gay men wear them all the time, why can’t you? Product Recommendations My favorite all-time masculine-looking t-shirts are Target’s A New Day Women’s Short Sleeve T-shirt (curvy girlfriend note: these don’t fit well if you have hips, as they tend to sit at the hips and ride up to them), Homage’s Women’s Go-To Tee, Arizona Men’s V-Neck Short Sleeve T-Shirt, Androgynous Fox Basics | V Neck (warning that this shirt runs LONG AF and needs to be tucked in to work and I’m 5’7”). Gap’s Everyday Soft Crewneck T-Shirt (originally got these in a three-pack), H&M Basics T-shirt and their Linen-Blend T-shirt (love the deep v on this). What you’ll notice here is that these are all women’s t-shirts except the ones from Arizona and Gap, but they have the length to achieve the correct length slightly cropped on my body. What you’ll also notice here is that these are all short-sleeved, because I live in a warmer environment. Ideas and Principles to Adopt: READ: Always read fit reviews on websites offering clothing, and be honest about your weight and height with yourself as you read them to see how you would fit these clothes. Also, review clothing that you like! Don't be afraid to add your weight and height to help others as well. Say you’re masc or butch! Help a friend in need. Know your body shape and seek out fashion influencers, advice, etc., that match your body type. For example, if you're curvy, don't follow and look for fashion advice from petite, curve-less, skinny people. That will discourage you and make you want to throw in the towel before you even get into fashion. I'd also argue that's a form of self-harm and, if my girlfriend's experiences are anything to go off of, will turn you off of trying to pay attention to fashion entirely and only gravitate toward "safe things" like hoodies and t-shirts and jeans. Don't be afraid to tailor your clothes, or to learn how to tailor your clothes. Don't be afraid to wear a bra or binder that changes how your breasts lay on your chest - or no bra at all. You can wear a sports bra or binder (if that's your jam) or a more shaped bra depending on what your support needs are and what you want out of the shape of the shirt. It is okay!!!! to have tits and wear a men's shirt, it's all about having the right bra or binder, and probably some boob tape too. Sometimes you have to spend money to get clothes that fit you well - An issue I keep encountering when I read lesbian fashion advice pretty much anywhere is that there are two price points, one is as cheap as humanly possible, and the other assumes a level of disposable income that a lot of people just don’t have. The thing is, sometimes money must be spent to either get clothes that work or help clothes to fit you better. Paying the extra money for the queer brand, or to take that pair of pants that looks so fucking good on you to the tailor is a good thing. There is no shame in spending money to look good. Get comfortable with with saving up for good quality pieces, or for looking at second-hand options. Step 1: Colors According to the Vivienne Files, a good capsule wardrobe has two core colors (e.g., black and brown), and three accent colors (e.g., red, white, and blue). This is not a how to build a capsule wardrobe post, but the general principles are the same. You probably have one or two colors you like on yourself, one of them is probably black. Figure out what the other colors are! My (very white/warm autumn) colors are baby pink, navy blue, cranberry red, gray, and black with some brown and tan accents. My girlfriend's (Native Hawaiian/Italian/cool winter) colors are mustard yellow, olive green, sunset orange, black, and grey with some brown, cranberry red/maroon (she wears so much do this), and navy blue accents. Your colors are your own! Figure out what makes you look good, and make sure to note them down for looking at clothes. Don't buy clothes in colors you look bad in! Step 2: Sizing & Getting Comfortable So here's the kicker: men's clothing doesn't work on everyone's bodies. Women's bodies are, unfortunately, built differently than men's, particularly if you have curves. If this is rough for you or causes you dysphoria, I'm sorry, it sucks. This is a post with some strategies to shop for clothes in the dreaded women's section if that's what you need to do in a way that suits your personal presentation choices (e.g., how to find or make clothing made 'for women' work for your body). Below are some key pointers that are useful for getting started. Firstly, measure yourself! Here are useful measurements for shopping for clothes. In all cases, don't pull the measuring tape tight to ensure accuracy. Otherwise, you'll feel very uncomfortable in the clothes you try on. Shoulder to Shoulder (esp. important if you have broad shoulders.) Bicep circumstance (measure around the widest part of your bicep while flexing) Many women's clothes have small armholes. Knowing this measurement helps to avoid looking like an overly jacked dude in a too-small shirt, ripping seams when you put on a shirt, or wearing shirts that are so tight that you can't bend your arm. This is a good measure of if you need to size up in a shirt because the rest of the measurements can be tailored. Bust (measure across your nipples) Underbust (measure around your ribcage under your breasts) Waist (measure from the narrowest part of your waist -- probably right around your belly button) Hips (measure from the widest part of your hips) Butt (Around the widest part of your ass) Inseam (measure from your ankle up into your crotch) Find clothes that fit your measurements - not clothes you instantly like or safely gravitate towards, but clothes that fit your measurements broadly and diversely - at a department store or a place like Target, Macy's, TJ Maxx, M&S, Primark, etc. that has a wide variety of inexpensive clothing, and try them on, drawing from both the men's and women's sections of the store. This is how you start to figure out what works for your body type and why you have to try things on broadly rather than just what feels "safe.'' Try on the following in a few different styles: Slacks, Jeans, Work Pants, Shorts When selecting clothes to try on, attempt to locate pieces that seem more gender-neutral to you in the women's section, such as straight-legged or boot-cut jeans or slacks (especially if you're curvy). In the men's section, look for athletic cut pants if you have any kind of curve, as these have more flex built into them to accommodate lifting butt on guys. NOTE ON PANT SIZING: Some clothing companies - especially those catering to a broader audience - use your waist size (e.g., 28-inch, 34-inch) as the size of the garment in question. Other companies use different sizing scales (such as a 10, 14, or 18). KNOWING YOUR MEASUREMENTS WILL HELP YOU TO USE THE SIZE GUIDE STORES PROVIDE TO TRANSLATE BETWEEN THE TWO. Button Up Shirts (note: a button down shirt is a shirt that has buttons to secure the collar down, which is why most shirts you'll see are button up, not down shirts). In the men's section, try on both a slim and a regular cut. Slim will be a tighter fit, particularly if you have curves, regular fit may look boxy on you in the wrong bra. In the women's section, try and find blouses that look more masculine -- this will be found by leaving the 'young person' section and going into the professional women's workwear section of the store. Some of these shirts may have darts, some may be cut baggier than others. Try both. Try and grab at least one fun young man Hawaiian shirt, as those are a fixture of masc wardrobes. T-shirts/Tanks (or vests) Grab some men's v-necks (higher neck) and some women's v-necks (deeper neck, less prone to giving boob shelf if the girls are big); Men and women's crew neck t-shirts, as well as thicker strapped men's and women's tank tops -- these should fit more loosely in a men's fit, or more form fitting in a women's fit. Sweaters/Crewnecks Usually unisex sizing -- so just grab one you like. My general advice for the trying on clothes part of this is to potentially also try on two different kinds of bras. If you've got bigger breasts, you probably want a more structured and supportive bra. This could potentially be the one you wear into the store, if you've got a fave, or this could be one you try on. Also, grab a bralette/unsupportive bra and a good sports bra with medium to high support. When looking at shirts try each with each bra. When trying on pants or shorts, drop a big squat and check if you have duck butt. Step 3: Black Slacks Think of this as an investment. The first thing you'll want is to be able to build outfits that you can dress up or down. This starts with a solid pair of slacks or trousers in a #suiting color. In terms of fit, I would suggest that you avoid having these be super baggy or super slim fitting. Slim or Skinny fitting will make the outfit look feminine (in terms of slacks) and baggy tends to make people look like their clothes are swallowing them. Neither of these looks is good for a wardrobe staple. Some advice from r/butchlesbians: Hem or cuff all pants so there is no excess fabric bunching at the ankle – this makes you look shorter. It is worth it to get nicer slacks hemmed for this reason alone. Keywords to look for: Trousers, Slacks, (and for a slightly more casual look, chinos) Avoid: Cargo pockets, drawstrings, no belt loops, pocket stitching on the pant leg, or double knees. Note: If you look at the reviews and see pictures of either models or owners of the pant style in question and you don't like how it looks on a body type similar to yours, don't order them as returning clothes can be a pain in the ass with time limits and other challenges. However, if you're in a store and can try them on, give them a shot! You might be surprised! Brand Recommendations: $20-40 USD: Target, H&M, Old Navy, Uniqlo $41-80 USD: Gap, Uniqlo, Androgynous Fox $81-120 USD: Everlane, Wildfang, Both&, Dapper Boi $120+ USD: Peau De Loup, Haute Butch, Kirrin Finch Caveat: As I'm sure you've noticed, to buy clothes designed for queer people by other queer people, you have to spend more money. I wish this wasn't the case, as these companies price out most queer folks with how much their clothing costs. However, as these trousers are an investment, it's worth spending more for them and supporting a queer brand if you have the funds to do so. Also, many of these are available on resale sites like Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace. If you know your size, you can easily get pants from Wildfang and other queer-catering brands for far less money (e.g., I paid $35 for my Wildfang empower trousers on Poshmark). Step 4: Button-Down Shirts Button-downs are the staple of any masculine wardrobe -- you're going to end up owning about ten of them. The unfortunate thing about button-downs, though, is that they're a pain in the ass to figure out, fit-wise. Men's shirts tend to fit women with larger breasts or wider hips poorly because (the vast majority of) men don't have large breasts or hips. So when shopping for a button-up, try to take this into account and don’t let not fitting into a men’s shirt ruin your day. There are options! A good button-up should fit your shoulders without there being a ton of space to move around (i.e., you should be able to raise your arms, but you should not be able to grab handfuls of fabric on each shoulder and pull. It also should fit your neck. Men tend to have wider necks than women, which means their shirts are built to accommodate this fact. Gaping collars make shirts look oversized and, therefore, visually look like they fit you poorly, even if they fit the rest of your body well. When shopping for button-ups, try to avoid gaping collars. A good button-up shirt is also one you can comfortably button the whole way down. This includes the last button. A big problem I see with many masc or butch lesbians is that they’re wearing shirts that don’t fit their hips, while they do fit their shoulders, chest, and neck. A solution for this is tucking your shirt in, yes, but sometimes you don’t want to do that, and having a shirt that can be versatile with both a tucked-in and tucked-out look is essential for this wardrobe staple. The good news is that many button-down options are available for women’s bodies that don’t have darts or a feminine cut. However, sometimes, if you’ve got hips, you need a feminine cut that has more space through the hips. But there are cheaper options as well. Target’s men's section is where I’d start. If you can make a Goodfellow and Co button-down shirt work for you, you’re golden. Try on a few of them. If you have money to burn, Kirrin Finch’s Frankie is cartoonishly expensive but quite worth the price. Everlane’s Relaxed Oxford Shirt is also quite pricey but goes on sale often. In terms of plus size recommendations, Wildfang, Androgynous Fox, and Kirrin Finch all accommodate a wide variety of body types. I’ve also found that Morning Witch's Button Down Shirts (Deathly Bouquet) go up to 4XL. Maurice's Plus Size 90s Prep Relaxed Button Up Shirt and Old Navy’s Linen Blend Button Down Boyfriend Shirt go up to 4X. What’s important to note here is that these sizes are built to accommodate how women’s bodies grow in size rather than how men’s bodies do – these are shirts that provide a boyish, masculine look while also being designed with bodies like yours in mind. Styling Tips: A short-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear underneath a sweater, crew-neck sweatshirt, or open in the front. A long-sleeve collared shirt is easier to wear buttoned up and tucked in—it also looks more professional. This master post is essential when reflecting on fit, style, color, etc. It’s also written by fashionable, and nerdy-about-fashion, guys, and has some good product recommendations. A good pair of jeans can look professional (if they are in a cut that looks professional [i.e., not excessively baggy]) or casual, depending on how they are styled. What we want from these jeans is a silhouette that isn’t too form-fitting - but also doesn’t look like it is oversized. Currently, fashion for young people is shifting away from more form-fitting cuts of jeans into baggy styles of jeans – which is fine if that floats your boat. Still, for a pair of jeans that you are turning into a masculine wardrobe staple, I recommend sticking to the more classic cuts: Boot, Straight Leg, Slim, Athletic Slim, or Skinny. I am including skinny here because sometimes, particularly if you are bottom-heavy, skinny jeans can be very slimming, while baggy jeans only work on particular body types (such as those who are skinny, slim, apple-shaped) and tend to feminize bodies that aren’t that type. Vintage Levis are a staple of hipster men’s fashion these days (writing in summer 2024) because they sit at men’s natural waists, which makes them better than a lot of current cuts of men’s jeans to fit a body with hips or an ass. If you’re short and have curves, particularly in the hip, try bootcut jeans. Levi’s makes great vintage-style bootcut women’s jeans (my girlfriend’s go-to) as well as the 315s, which are shaping in a similar look. For a more classically masculine look in women’s jeans, you can also try the higher-waisted 80s Mom Jeans which are tapered, or the straight-fit, mid-rise wedgie that is a favorite recommendation of dyke fashion bloggers. r/mensfashionadvice also suggests the following if you can make men’s pants work for you: Levis 510 (skinny), 511 (slim), 512 (slim taper), 513 (slim straight), 514 (looser slim straight). Bullet point from curvy girlfriend: Don’t be afraid to mid or high-waist it. Levi’s Wedgie only goes up to a 34-inch waist – HOWEVER, I wear a 32, have a 36-inch natural waist and a 47-inch around the widest part of my butt [and a 27-inch inseam] – so I’d encourage you to try them on if you are even remotely close to these measurements. My go-to pair of jeans is the Goodfellow athletic cut jeans from Target (linked in a lighter wash). I’ve also had good luck with Urban Outfitters BDG brand’s vintage slim fit jean (men’s) and their high-waisted cowboy jean (women’s). Additionally, Old Navy’s OG Slim-Straight High/Mid-Waisted Jean (also in curvy) is sized for women (on a 00-30 scale as opposed to 24-50-inch waist scale). Bear your measurements in mind when looking at their stuff. My girlfriend has had good luck with Lee jeans (which are sold at Wal-Mart) and jeans from Express. I have enjoyed my jeans from Nordstrom x Wildfang’s collaboration and my skinny jeans from the Gap. The thing with jeans is that you probably already have a pair or three that you like. What I’d focus on is for more dressy jeans, go for a darker wash with no rips or tears, but for casual jeans, whatever works, works. Don’t let fashion snobs bully you out of clothing that you like and makes you feel confident, or tell you that the cut of jeans that works for you isn’t fashionable anymore (I’m looking at you, Gen-Z), and understand that if it works for you, it works for you and you are the one who makes it fashion. Don’t throw out your skinnies – if you want to wear baggy jeans go for it! Remember that everyone’s style is different but that if something is too baggy or too skinny it tends to look unprofessional. Step 6: T-Shirts Derek Guy (the menswear blogger), has an incredible Twitter thread on how to find a t-shirt that fits you well. Start Here. If you can’t be bothered, essentially he argues that there is a certain ratio between a person’s torso and legs in those classic pictures of men in t-shirts that we masc folks covet as like, fashion goals: slightly cropped torso, long legs. T-shirts are, in general, cut long because t-shirt companies need to sell across multiple torso sizes. This is why styles like the half/french tuck on the t-shirt are so popular with fashion modeling and photography – the shirt is simply too long for both the model’s torso and where their pants sit on their legs. Point being: cheap men’s t-shirts - a staple of most masculine-leaning lesbian wardrobes - tend to sit oddly on a lot of bodies – particularly if you’re shorter, have noticeable breasts or hips, or are rounder about the middle. Buying a 10-pack of Hanes or Fruit of the Loom t-shirts at Walmart will get you places if you have a very specific body type, but most likely, you don’t have that body type. That’s okay! Good quality t-shirts both last longer, and fit you better, but you have to pay more for them. Don’t get sticker shock at spending 20 bucks on a t-shirt if it fits you well and works for your body. So how do you, in trying to find more masculine looks, find a stylish t-shirt that works? Ideally, a t-shirt should fit about 1/3 of your body – most men’s t-shirts are cut to fit 1/2 of a man. Given that you are - most likely - not a six-foot tall man, you probably want to focus on the silhouette that falls just above or just below your hips. Boxier cuts, if you’re slim, look very good on women with breasts. You can also achieve this by tucking in a t-shirt at your natural waist. Don’t french tuck, that was horrific advice on Queer Eye. Cut and Style There are three necklines and one style that I think are particularly useful for wardrobe building: Crew neck (think your traditional collar on a sweatshirt or sweater that doesn't have a hood) This is your basic ‘unisex’ t-shirt A crew neck with jeans or slacks looks effortlessly classy or casual, depending on how it is styled. V-Neck (shaped like a v, obviously) In women’s clothing, v-necks tend to be a bit deeper A v-neck t-shirt under a button-up or flannel allows you to comfortably button up the shirt to the neck without having too many layers of fabric in the way. Henley (buttons at the neck) In women’s clothing, henleys tend to cut lower with more of a boat or scoop-cut neckline before the buttons start. A henley can be worn with anything but looks great underneath a chunky sweater – the kind you find at Goodwill and are like score. Baseball Style Tees (Typically with full sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves - though they do come in short sleeves too) Characterized by having sleeves of a different color than the rest of the shirt and the triangular cut of the sleeves going into the neckline of the shirt is good for people with broad shoulders. Baseball tees make everyone look masculine - they’re practically designed this way. I think they’re a positive staple in anyone’s wardrobe if you’re trying to create a masculine vibe. So try some t-shirts from both the women’s and men’s sections in a place like Target or a department store. Try the athletic and boxy fits and maybe some of the shirts with deeper v-necks, too. Hey there everyone, I am currently building my capsule wardrobe and this journey has been a lot of fun. I have made a few mistakes and bought great items that I love and I have some insights to share. It all started with me gaining a lot of weight due to the gym and all of my clothes stopped fitting me, and were super unflattering. This was a year ago, I'd buy replacements for the items I outgrew in Zara and similar stores (mostly pants since it was painful for my thighs always rubbing on each other), but I was never in love with my clothes. Thats until I discovered this sub. I first made a list of everything I needed and started to pin point the points of failure in my closet, why didn't I love my clothes? What was wrong with them? After that I figured it was mostly because of fit, since everything was way too tight, also the quality was not the best, and overall I always had a lot of basics, but the outfits can become boring. So after all of this I went to Pinterest and created a mood aesthetic to figure out what I liked and what I didn't. the first style I gravitated towards was preppy, and timeless, something like what Alain Delon would wear. Then, I started making an excel document with clothes that I needed that addressed all of my concerns. The first thing was creating two different categories, the items that I absolutely needed, and the items that were poor quality/I didn't love and could be replaced. I addressed the necessities first, creating a list, that I would then use a couple months later to buy the items I wanted on sale. First I went to Zara for a couple of basics like dress pants, and Massimo dutti for knit sweaters. I bought everything in a short period of time, during a sale, which resulted in mistakes. I didn't love the items from Zara, due to the quality, it feels too stiff, and it has a lot of loose threads. Two of the pants still have the tags on them. So I established a rule of only buying natural fibers, and went to Massimo Dutti to buy knits. Best decision ever, I love every single item I bought. I then took a longer amount of time, and started to just wear my clothes, and noticed a couple of gaps in my wardrobe. I still liked the preppy style but I wanted more durable clothes. I then discovered the r/BuyItForLife sub. I didn't love the pants I had, and I had absolutely no jackets that fitted me, that's when I took a deep dive into Levi's and Carhartt. The quality is great for both, and I managed to catch most of the items on sale when the sales were almost over. I wear these all the time. Nothing fits me. But one of my mistakes was buying things too fast, so Im taking a different approach. Im mostly looking at tshirts and polos. I love knitted polos, but since I wear a backpack to work, it tends to damage the back of my knits, so since its summer, I won't be wearing a jacket. So this is a concern I got some steps on how to achieve this: Take a look and properly research a lot of brands. Look at what they offer, what materials they use, where do they make the items, if they are sustainable, etc create a list for those brands and do elimination rounds to see who survives Do a deliberation station to see if I really need the item Buy very slowly I plan to buy accordingly to my laundry cycle, so 5 or 6 more items will be enough I think. I've had and worn my Carhartts on a weekly basis for probably the last 4 years. I love em to death but she's starting to get some holes in some unfortunate places that refuse to be sewed closed for longer than a week at a time. I'm looking to get a new pair to break in but the closest looking thing I can find online is this. Note the lack of extra side pockets. Any clue as to if these are still made? I know there’s a thread dedicated to clothing recommendations- but I’m hoping to save some people from making the same mistake I did. Like most everyone else I generally just opt for mens work pants (dickies flex& carhartt double front are my picks), but lately I’ve been in a downswing in regards to my body. Was hoping to find something that made me feel a little less frumpy. I’m 5’6, 150 Ibs and generally bounce back and forth between 30x32 and 32x32. Ordered a M from them and man oh man, just not a good pant. First off, they hit pretty low rise, and the waist was also too large. I knew I’d be wearing a belt with this, but with a belt, the fabric then cinches in an unflattering way. The small belt in the back is also useless and doesn’t stay Furthermore..the pockets…oh pockets. The rear ones are comically deep and land about midway on the back of my thigh. I’m all for getting pockets but my god, position them better. The utility pockets are also terribly places and again, way too deep?? If you carry a utility knife, it slides down into the abyss and sits smack dab in the middle of where my knee bends so I can be reminded of where my knife is with every step. Super uncomfortable to put anything in your pockets and have to bend your legs at all. I’ll bet you thought I was done with the pocket gripes but there’s one more- the front pockets are angled in such a way that trying to hook a tape measure on them is a chore and leaves it dangling just ready to fall on the ground. No introduction is really needed here so I'll keep it brief for people who may not be as familiar. /u/HalfTheGoldTreasure is an active user and WAYWT poster as well as a moderator of this forum. Well known for mixing Ivy & prep influences with some streetwear and westernwear, they've contributed significantly to this forum and I felt like celebrating that. HalfTheGoldTreasure Fits How did your style journey begin? Would you say there was a specific inciting incident that made you start considering your clothing differently, or was it a more gradual journey? It started when I was young, probably 13. I think I mentioned before that I had a huge gap in my (fairly jacked up) teeth and when I was going to get braces the recession hit and that was out of the cards. So I ended up very self conscious and had some pretty poor self image, never really like I was attractive. I kinda funneled that into feeling like if I wasn’t going to be hot, at least I could be well dressed. From there, I kinda learned how much I loved clothes. I loved just getting dressed up. And I’d always put together outfits in my room if I was bored. I loved the idea of being able to recreate a style. Almost like creating a character. I think that experience was pretty formative for where I ended up: posting pictures of outfits for other guys on the internet Looking at fit pics of yours from early 2018 to now, you definitely started off dressing (or at least posting) in what would've been considered closer to MFA's "house style", but it seems like there were some prep influences even early on, before arriving at your current style. Is prep something that you would say has a larger or formative influence on your life outside of fashion? I've heard prep described as closer to a lifestyle or a subculture than as a purely aesthetic movement - would you say that rings true for your experience? It’s crazy it was only 2018, I feel like it was so much longer ago but that tracks, that was just about when I had graduated college and moved back home. To preface my next statement, I need to be clear I was completely offline until like 5 years ago, basically when I finished college. I had a twitter where I followed 100 friends, an instagram where I followed 150 friends and I would check NBA scores on my laptop. I found MFA only cause I used reddit to stream NBA games and read r/NBA. I cannot emphasize how much I straight up only used the computer to keep up with professional basketball (and college during March Madness). So with that stipulated, I would like to proudly declare that I came to the MFA house style completely independently of MFA. I am constantly learning old MFA lore cause at that time I was watching Derek Rose highlight compilations on YouTube. I came to the basic bastard because it was just sort of in the zeitgeist at the time. I’ve always had a very strong sense of what’s “good” and “bad” with clothes. At the time the minimalist, post-heritage menswear look was the thing to beat and I went all in. I wanted to be seen as well dressed in college and that sort of smart casual look was the move at the time. I remember I was specifically called out by a professor (whose schtick was wearing a sweater vest every class) for always wearing a crew neck sweater over a button down to class. He said that’s a kid with style and I was embarrassed but secretly very pleased. Looking back, I was going to class and hanging out and going to bars to drink the cheapest beer wearing business casual. At the time, that preppy minimalism was very much “hipster” for the school I went to. I was also mixing in dad caps and this sick Martha’s Vineyard ball cap, that wasn’t quite a dad hat and wasn’t quite a flat brim that would kiiiillll today, and some really faded t-shirts from high school that were coming back around (like one for when my high school went to the hockey conference semi-finals). As for the prep influences, I’m from Connecticut, specifically the part of Connecticut (or close enough to it) that people picture in their heads when you tell them you’re from Connecticut. Prep was everywhere around me, it was kids wearing Sperry’s to high school, and every dress shirt, for any occasion, being an OCBD, and everyone wearing Polo (especially the polos and quarter zips). It was just everywhere. And as a kid who didn’t have a lot of money, and was super self conscious about how he looked, I noticed it everywhere. And I wanted to be part of it. But even more so than that my dad is from the sticks in New Hampshire. Like a small town in the woods, and when he went to college in the 70s he was doing Ivy cause that’s what they wore. The tweed, the OCBDs, the cord blazers. And the entire time I was growing up he was always in a blue, or white or yellow OCBD, like every single day. My Wythe blue OCBD I have looks and feels exactly like the ones he used to wear as a kid. I’ve lived in New England/the Northeast my entire life, and I can’t imagine living elsewhere. I want to retire to Maine and spend the rest of my days in head to vintage LL Bean doing LL Bean things. It wasn’t until I got to college that I realized that wasn’t the standard, which is about when I started leaning in harder. I never really got homesick and I never wanted to go back home, but I liked having something that felt a bit like hometown pride. I really do love a lot of prep and ivy. There’s a lot of romance to the aesthetic. Animal House, The Graduate, The Talented Mr Ripley, even Dirty Dancing. You see those films and the clothes are so iconic and backdrops are so beautiful and green and outdoors. You post a pic wearing a gun club check blazer and a unistripe shirt, that shits going right in my IG stories. New drakes cookbook? I’ll eat that shit right up. Ivy and prep will never die, every ten years or so you’ll hear about how it’s back but this time it’s ______. That’s cause it is at its core one of the pillars of American Fashion (alongside workwear/westernwear and streetwear/sportswear) and will only return again because of how deeply it’s entrenched in how Americans look at fashion. But you’re right that prep isn’t just an aesthetic. Its place in American mythology is because it’s the uniform of privilege. It’s what was worn at America’s top institutions and the predatory schools where their families could afford to send them. It's always been a class signifier. 50 years ago, wearing your navy sack suit and ivy university tie meant the white guy sitting across the desk from you could tell you went to his alma mater and probably came from “a good family” and that’s how you got a job. The unspoken rules and class signifiers were always there. Today it’s morphed into the frat boy uniform: Southern Tide, Vineyard Vines, golf polo from a Big East or SEC school. It’s a marker of white privilege and structural inequality, and as such, it’s really hard for me to want to be a part of that. However, all of that being said, Ivy/Prep is pretty generally only an aesthetic movement, sustained by enthusiasts, these days. Normal people are not wearing prep, they’re wearing business casual. The people buying OCBDs are either hardcore enthusiasts, cosplaying as 70s students, looking for the most insanely minute details or a new college grad buying shirts to wear because they read oxfords were the best choice on the internet. Because I really don’t fall into the modern “Barstool Couture” prep variety, to most people I look like a fashion guy. I cannot think of a single time I’ve been called preppy by anyone who didn’t have a strong knowledge of basic aesthetics. I think this is due in part to the fact that since I think of prep as an aesthetic, I freely blend it with a variety of other ideas, as opposed to many of the staunchest defenders of Amotora. I always think about the fact that the guy who really defined what Prep is in America (at least from a fashion perspective), Ralph Lauren himself, was a poor, jewish kid from the Bronx who would absolutely not belong to the UES or New Englanders on which he based his designs. I think there’s something to be said about the dynamics of Prep and what it means to be accepted in America . I think it’s very telling that the people who do Ivy the most interestingly are Japanese Ametora brands and the Black Ivy. But my takeaway is that looking in on those who just did it was what made me do it too. I've noticed what I perceive as something of a streetwear slant in some of your item and styling choices over the years. Would you say that you're consciously influenced by streetwear? Yeah I think for years I've been trending more streetwear but the recent Neo-Prep trend kinda kicked it into higher gear. It’s mostly cause I wear business casual for work and at the end of the day I don’t want to go to a bar in business casual, even if it’s cool bizcas. I think EG was a good gateway into that styling, particularly when I started to see less of the Advanced J Crew (Bedford and chinos aka the easy pass to a MFA TopWAYWT) styling and more of the baggier milsurp snearkers/gorpcore stylings via stores or IG accounts. And don’t get me wrong, I love white t shirts. But I love my Kevin Garnett bootleg graphic T just as much. It was actually the search for graphic Ts that pushed me further to try new brands. I was like who makes graphics…Carhartt WIP I guess? Then I was checking out Online Ceramics and then Brain Dead and then I was thinking, what if I went back to the source and then I’m looking at Stussy graphics and now its Supreme. I really love basketball as well, which holds such an important place, alongside skating, in the development of streetwear as a movement. It's very nice to be able to include some of my interest In the my style. It's fairly easy for me to make the subtle transition to more streetwear inspired looks because workwear and sportswear both overlap so easily with prep inspired basics. It’s just a matter of choosing the right version of the items. Things like Carhartt Detroit jackets, varsity jackets, and hefty grey hoodies have the right combo of vintage styling that fits in with an ivy aesthetic but are also very contemporary. Carpenter pants and double knees slot in as an alternative for chinos or white jeans but are staples of contemporary streetwear. The streetwear cardigan moment was great for me, cause now cool brands are making cool versions of the knitwear I already wear. I could buy a mohair cardigan from Needles or Stussy today, and have no issue pairing it with my existing wardrobe. I am currently desperately waiting for a Supreme sweater, to make the streetwear takeover of my closet complete. Before you say it, I am aware I am just doing Aime Leon Dore. Speaking of styling choices, we've discussed before how you use them (things like buttoning specific buttons to alter the shape of outerwear, specific cuffing heights, shirts tucked vs. exposed, etc.) as a way of creating more visual interest and personality in outfits. Do you view the formation of an outfit as complete when the individual pieces have been selected, with the styling of those pieces as a secondary process? Or are you creating the outfit with the styling in mind from the beginning? A good outfit is a case where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. There’s a huge difference between buying and wearing cool pieces and wearing a cool outfit. Cool outfits needs a concept, even simple concepts like I’m gunna do a take on hiking gear or I’m gunna wear a Carhartt jacket with chinos or I’m going to mix a bunch of fall textures or I wanna wear these 3 colors together. But that’s not the end, styling is how you take the items and make them feel more than just clothes. The details on the rest of the outfit should support that concept. Use an untucked shirt as a mid layer to drop some color in. Button at the top of the jacket (or use the GOAT double zipper) to show off the shirt underneath. Let a shirt collar hang loose over the top of a sweater or unbutton the collar of a button down below a v neck. It’ll look more relaxed and interesting. Other moves give an outfit personality: a sweater over an untucked shirt reads a bit more casual (sprezzatura, if you will), almost disheveled, plus sometimes I wanna wear a sweater and not feel like I’m at work! Same concept applies to a hoodie with some t shirt below it. A t shirt under a button down can be perceived as slouchier. I love popping my collar on a jacket, not even to protect from the wind I just think it looks cool. I tie the laces on all my hoodies, cause it’s what I’ve always done. It’s important to have little quirks that run as a throughline through your style. These embellishments unify all the various styles you try out. Having various ways of styling an item make it much more rewearable as well. Wearing a jacket open, fully closed up, buttoned at the top, making use of a double zipper are all ways of getting more versatility out of a piece. I never get tired of wearing my Barbour cause every time I do, I style it differently. It makes me reach for it so much more and never Lastly, styling decisions are also very important for blending aesthetics or concepts. You can use those styling moves to cement the mixing of the styles beyond just combining items of different genres. Pants breaking on sneakers is going to read more streetwear, while cuffed is going to invoke the hipster/prep/minimalist/heritage menswear because it was such a big part of those movements. Being aware of the historic and cultural moments More broadly, are there any designers or brands that have been particularly influential for you? And are there any that are current favorites? Pretty obviously, ALD has had the most profound influence on me. The blend of heritage prep and contemporary streetwear and their impeccable styling is all I’ve ever aspired to do. It’s perfectly new and familiar and I think that’s a hard balance to strike. They also completely convinced me to get a sweatsuit. It’s the best styling inspiration around and every season is basically a shopping list I use to start my eBay searches. I’ve said before and I stand by it: good ALD fits have 1 ALD piece. The best ones have none and that's a goal to which I always aspire. Other than ALD, I’m not sure I’m particularly inspired by “a brand” (maybe J Crew in years past). There’s lots of brands I like but not really any I’d wear head to toe. I’m mostly a pick a piece here and there from a bunch of brands, and combine them into my own thing kinda guy. Like I love EG, and it was the first step up brand I learned about but the EG brand identity is not really my vibe. I’ve put off FA Pants or the Aircraft pants for too long tho and really need a pair. I genuinely like the new J Crew, I also liked the old J Crew tbh. There were only a few years I wasn’t really buying from J Crew. I think this iteration better than Brendan’s work at NOAH (which I find kinda boring due to ehh styling in their lookbooks) even if it’s not as “high quality.” I think BB is very good at what he does, walking the very difficult line of blending prep and westernwear, but I think his styling is subpar and doesn’t pop or stick in my brain like other brands’ styling does. Also their inseams are always too short for me so I never buy any. I love Wythe. I very much appreciate the soft, contemplative country style over the WHISKEY, LUMBER, DENIM, MEN heritage workwear of the early 2010s (coincidentally, that’s also the kind of country music I like). It reminds me a lot of OrSlow. And I appreciate being able to buy the staples each year. I like having a way to add some subtle cowboy to an outfit. I look forward to their stuff every season. They make the perfect shirt to wear with a pair of jeans that can also be worn under a suit to immediately make it more interesting. I am very into Supreme’s FW22. I’ve been eyeing several pieces that I think could absolutely slot into my wardrobe and bring an immediate spark. Same with Stussy the last couple years. The current lineup is reasonably priced (+ deep secondhand market) workwear, fleeces, cardigans, graphic knitwear that can slot easily into most wardrobes. I’ll always recommend J Press as a place to get OCBDs and Shaggy Dogs, but aside from the icons I’m not buying much. Brands that I would like to try some day include Drake’s and Evan Kinori. I love that Drakes makes the platonic ideal of a lot of prep staples and their guncheck overcoat is a grail. EK is sick, I really appreciate Simplewear guys because I find that sort of carefully curated minimalism very striking. EK zipper jackets and field shirts are gorgeous and infinitely wearable. I am interested in finally buying a Brain Dead graphic T, after how much I wear my Online Ceramics ones. I love the edginess of them. Similarly, I’ve been buying a bunch of bootleg graphic Ts for bands and movies from instagram sellers these days. I also love Full Court Press for basketball related gear! Brands that I’m looking for the right piece to finally snag: Palace, there was a pink bowling shirt this pre-fall that really caught my eye. Some patched denim from FDMTL and something vintage from Brut Archives have been big priorities for me, something from Kapital would be cool too. Not a fleece but something that intersects with my current style. Maybe a fucked up denim jacket (I had a chance to buy a coverall and I hesitated and it left the deepest sale I’d ever encountered). As for brands I really appreciate but would never wear: I really appreciate Nanamica/NFPL for interesting tech stuff that isn’t tech wear. Gramicci, Manatash, Snow Peak and lots of other Japanese gorpcore brands. The simpleness of the designs and interesting silhouettes are very cool, even if not for me. Mfpen, Studio Nicholson, Sillage, and Lemaire are all so striking. I love them every time I see them. I think if I were to ever do it all over, that would be the skill tree I’d pour my exp (hard earned cash from working a job) into. I like that the guys who wear it look like they have very cool, nicely decorated apartments. Those are probably some of my favorites to see but not anything I’d wear. And I would be remiss, to not give the remainder of my time to the GOAT, Ralph Lauren. It sucks that so much of what people know of Ralph is polos and quarter zips with a little embroidered polo player on it. Ralph understands Americana in a way that few others do. He understands that New England barn coats, and OCBDs are Americana, and that Jeans and huge belt buckles and denim jackets are Americana, and that Old New York Glamour and Tuxedos and Gowns are Americana and that sportswear and streetwear are Americana. And since he understands that he was able to combine them in ways that people who separated them into distinct categories could never. He has these iconic looks: the tuxedo jacket with jeans, or the tweed sports coat over a double denim ensemble. They’re so distinctly Ralph and I really love that. He creates characters through styling, you can look at any of the polo bears and see them. I really love him and think he’s far too under-appreciated for the way he saw how everything connects. Are there any particular articles of clothing that you feel a close personal connection to, whether you wear them often or not? Probably my uni-stripe OCBD. Like I said above, it reminds me of my dad, but it’s also not the exact one he wore, so it feels more like me. Unis have been my go to color way of OCBDs for years and the one I wear now is a J Press with the button flap pocket. I love that detail. I know thousands of other people have one like it but this one feels like it's all mine. It’s incredibly broken in and easy to wear. There are countless photos of me in it. I wore it when I proposed to my fiancé. It’s what I grab when I don’t know what to wear. It’s just my shirt. Do you feel that your wardrobe is "complete", in the sense that new purchases are made not to fill specific holes (like "I really need a longer coat") but instead for pure enjoyment of the design? And are there any pieces or stylistic directions that you feel yourself being drawn to or that you specifically desire to explore? I could use a navy moleskin chore coat and a second suit that I can easily make into separates to round out my work clothes. But after that I’m basically only buying things I think are cool. I still have to work in a business casual office a few days a week. But I just have so much stuff that I can cover basically any situation from casual to formal and always be appropriately dressed. So aside from looking for things that can do a bit of double duty, I’m looking to grab stuff that advances my style further into the blend of aesthetics I’ve developed. Jordan 1s or 4s are on top of my list. A pair of Paraboot loafers eventually. I dunno, I have so many clothes as is. I need to cut down my closet to fit it in my apartment. You mentioned looking forward to simplifying, and that's a trend I've noticed in a lot of people over the years with fashion; they start off pretty narrow in scope, expand into many different styles and all the things they want to try, and eventually start to settle into their more long-term personal style. Do you have any general (or specific) advice you would want to give to people who might be coming across this interview and just starting out on their journey? Yeah, my advice is to follow that path. You learn so much by trying new things, the most important of which is how to appreciate things that aren’t for you and the proper pace to experiment at. Like personally, I love how crazy sneakers look on other people. I love crazy sneakers and I’ve experimented a bunch, most recently with reebok beatniks, but at the end of the day I just reached for my white sneakers. And that's fine! I’m a white sneaker guy! I love white sneaks! I am going to keep buying white versions of cool sneaks so that I actually wear them. I think most people go out, try everything they could possibly like within reason, have a huge closet, and then only reach for the stuff that they were into when they got started. Because at the end of the day, that's what got you into it in the first place, it holds a lot of emotional value! But it’s not the exact stuff, it's better in quality, or cut or color. Then you can take all the experience you have with all these things you tried, and all the stuff that survived countless wardrobe cullings and you have developed a personal style. In summary, my advice would be to be patient, take the journey, no one who dresses with a defined personal aesthetic got there overnight. My general advice to anyone starting out is that there’s a difference between dressing cool/acceptable/nice and having a carefully curated, defined personal aesthetic that you may see from posters on this sub or on instagram. Both are equally valid (as someone who has worked to curate said aesthetic), however, I don’t think it’s necessary to move out of Urban Outfitters, J Crew or Uniqlo spectrum to move into Cool/Acceptable/Trendy/Nice territory. I think quality is way, way, way overrated and “Buying-For-Life” will trick you into owning really expensive stuff that you may not even like in a year. In general, your interest in clothes will die well before typical mall tier clothes do, so might as well buy something cool that you like. If you like it enough to keep wearing it you will realize what qualities you would like to look for in an upgrade piece. Thrifting and ebay are a good way to test things out, but are also a money hole. I have wasted so much cash on things that didn’t fit or weren’t exactly what I wanted or that need enough tailoring to reduce any savings I would have had from buying new. The amount I was spending on clothes reduced a ton when I stopped just ordering everything on ebay, particularly cause ebay is great for scratching the “I need to spend $40 to feel something” quick hit in lieu of the I waited and got something that i really want satisfaction. However, that's also a byproduct of basically completing the foundation of my wardrobe. I have enough chinos, OCBDs, Jeans, and go-to jackets and coats. All of this is to say, when building a new wardrobe, focus on getting a foundation. Pick a style you like, pick someone who dresses well in that style and copy the key pieces that you can try on in a mall or local outlets, even if it’s not exact. Trying to recreate is a much more valuable experiment than buying exactly what they’re wearing, particularly since it’s either gunna be expensive!!! Or Secondhand!! Or from a past season!!! When you do want to buy a fun bold piece, be thoughtful, consider if you can make at least three (3) unique outfits with what you already own. If you can do this, you can create more. Lastly, whether you’re posting fit pics or just trying to be more stylish, you will suck for a while. It will not be easy to transition and you will be bad at it. But eventually, by sticking with it, it will stick and it will look cool. My last advice is that expensive jeans are not worth it. I noticed that most Carhartt's Fall/Winter 2022 line-up recently went live on Carhartt.com. Not all of them are in stock and some links have been unreliable, but most are purchasable right now. Some of these styles were previously described in the EMEA/PAC Fall/Winter 2022 catalog that came out last year while others are new and apparently exclusive to Carhartt's US market. There are some interesting new styles as well as apparent replacements of classic styles. Here are ten notable Fall/Winter 2022 styles: #1 Relaxed Fit Denim Sherpa-Lined Jacket https://preview.redd.it/onvw2h5voqd91.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd64540163f543bfdfbf9aea37dd27405fa4bc2a This 105478 Relaxed Fit Denim Sherpa-Lined Jacket is Carhartt's first Men's denim jacket since the J291 Unlined Denim Jacket and J293 Sherpa-Lined Denim Jacket were discontinued in 2014. This new one definitely has more of a retro look with the sherpa-lined collar, somewhat reminiscent of the 1970s Carhartt denim styles, though it's made of 12.5 instead of 15-ounce denim. I hope the lining isn't as thin as the sherpa-lining on other recent Carhartt styles. It's also worth noting that it's available in Medium Tall, which is rare nowadays. #2 Super Dux Relaxed Fit Sherpa-Lined Camo Active Jacket https://preview.redd.it/kefz21xwoqd91.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2288c2844355cf0a25b37ffb365b52fd1557eade This 105477 Super Dux™ Relaxed Fit Sherpa-Lined Camo Active Jacket is part of Carhartt's new camo line that pays homage to the Mossy Oak Treestand camo of the 1990s. The new SuperDux line itself has roots in the 1930s. I really like this camo pattern and if I were getting a camo jacket, this is the pattern I'd get. Carhartt classifies this as an Active Jacket though it doesn't have the rib-knit waistband that is usually present. #3 Relaxed Fit 5-Pocket Jean https://preview.redd.it/2wh2l52yoqd91.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fec461d6bee39123e5592295b2317915d6ed754 Carhartt hasn't produced a 100% denim, straight-leg five-pocket jean since the B460 Relaxed Fit Jeans were discontinued in 2019 so this 105119 Relaxed Fit 5-Pocket Jean is a welcome addition. It may be the replacement for the B17 Relaxed Fit Tapered Leg Jeans. I appreciate the appeal of Rugged Flex denim but favorite is still 100% cotton denim. Right now, these jeans are available in three colors, though two of them appear quite similar (at least in the stock photos). The stock photo looks like rigid denim to me. I don't like screen-printed graphics because they are prone to cracking but this style has a sewn on, felted logo so that isn't an issue. I like the bold, contrasting colors of the black hoodie, though I wish it were the heavyweight 13-ounce fabric and had Rain Defender technology, but you can't have everything I guess. #6 Rugged Flex Relaxed Fit Ripstop Cargo Work Pant https://preview.redd.it/wups73t5pqd91.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cab28bc51aec96d82fdded4e5932d47f20b580d0 The 105461 Rugged Flex® Relaxed Fit Ripstop Cargo Work Pant appears to the be the potential successor to the B324 Relaxed Fit Ripstop Cargo Pants. I can only hope that they fixed the design flaw that makes the B342 unwearable for me: the cargo pocket corners slamming right into the soft part of my knee whenever I take a step. The 59% cotton/39% polyester/2% spandex blend is an interesting new blend that Carhartt recently began using. The gusseted crotch is a plus and one of the reasons I like Duluth Trading Company's pants and jeans. #7 Carhartt Montana Loose Fit Insulated Jacket https://preview.redd.it/9xu9djq8pqd91.jpg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9df4a79aa04cf2860ecb4f9b0fcef2c4ca4a39ba The 105474 Carhartt Montana Loose Fit Insulated Jacket seems to be one of Carhartt's warmest styles, rated 4 of 4 on their warmth rating scale, comparable to the Yukon Extremes line. It's got a lot of good cold-weather features: Rain Defender, Wind Fighter, faux-down insulation, internal rib-knit cuffs, etc. I also like that it has Carstrong reinforcements, though I am not sure if the entire jacket is reinforced or just the high-wear areas. If that is indeed the case, it is disappointing that Carhartt has reduced the denim weight from 15-ounce to 13-ounce. The B13 jeans are made of 11.75-ounce denim, so it's refreshing to know that its possible replacement is made of 13-ounce denim instead of being downgraded to a lighter weight denim like most denim replacement styles. Idk what's different about me, but the Firehose Flex pants I got last year are straight up bad1 and both the local store and corporate number offered any meaningful support. So I have sworn them off...I see no reason to pay a premium for non-premium products with no actual guarantee to speak of. That said, the slim fit on the Firehose Flex was good, and the plentiful yet low-profile pockets were great too. If there were a pant with a similar design but, ya know, actually durable material, that would be great. I am 50/50 on whether they need stretch. I'd prefer canvas-y/duck material over denim. Thick and too-hot-in-the-summer material is fine; I'd rather be too warm than cool from having the breeze blowing through holes in the knees and crotch. Brown color would be great (shows less dirt), though I really don't like the Carhartt yellow-y brown. But also, color is like the lowest priority if the pants hit all the other marks. Pockets for insert knee pads would be a great plus. I'd be willing to spend up to $100 or so if it gets me pants that will actually last for years, and are backed by an actually usable guarantee. Looking at the big brands, here are my thoughts based on the product info; I haven't actually owned any of these so I could use some real-world experience too: "RUGGED FLEX RIGBY DOUBLE-FRONT PANT" from Carhartt seem appropriately durable and have knee pad pockets, but I'd really like more leg pocket space "DuraTech Ranger Duck Cargo Pants" from Dickies also seem decent but the cavernous cargo pockets aren't as good as multiple separate ones 1620 Workwear "Double Knee Utility Pant" seem spot-on for durability, but the price is kinda steep, and no additional pockets would be annoying Caterpillar "Men's Trademark Pants" look a bit too whatever-the-construction-version-of-tacticool-is with their two-tone design, but the pockets look fantastic and at least their promise of durability sounds good too "WRANGLER® RIGGS WORKWEAR® RIPSTOP RANGER CARGO PANT" also have a nice pocket design, and the 10oz fabric is a bit thicker than others Any thoughts? 1 Here's what's wrong with them.
