Got 2gig fiber connection and need cable from the box to router, I need around 4m to place router in middle of house. Broadband company told me to use cat 6 cable. I live in a university building where internet access is provided to each apartment through only one port. To get a wired connection to my work desk in another room, I pulled a 50 feet Cat 6 cable. However, I can't get my work VPN (Cloudflare WARP) to connect. It fails with CF_DNS_LOOKUP_FAILURE even though most websites seem to load normally. I know you can't run power and Ethernet parallel (same conduit) to each other or in close proximity. But can you run two ethernet lines parallel to each other and next to each other (same 1" conduit)? This would be for unshielded CAT 6. It's a matter of convenience, but if it's a bad idea I can certainly run a second conduit and separate them. Edit: thanks for all of the answers. Just got a brand spankin' new Cat 8 ethernet cable, routed it through the wall and floor for a direct connection from the PC to the router. The speed is consistently slow, hovering between 24-40kbit/s. WiFi has been unstable for a very long time, and consistently "wobbles" as can be seen in the image above. I've done my best in terms of troubleshooting drivers in regards to the ethernet cable, but that hasn't gotten me much of anywhere. I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to even begin with the WiFi. Hello everyone, i am trying to connect my xbox to my router through a Cat 6 ethernet cable thats already in the walls of my appartment. I have done the RJ45 connector on both ends, one goes in my xbox and the other in the router. The problem is that i am getting only around 96Mbps compared to the 300mbs i get if I plug the xbox straight in the router with a 3 feet patch cord. I also have a pair tester which shows pair 1 to 8 being well connected. So this is where I am at. I'm wondering if maybe my RJ45 connectors i bought on amazon are too cheap? A colleague gave me a bunch of different cables that he used in his first high-end system. Among them is the Transparent Ethernet cable. That's why I haven't tried them yet. And is there a difference in sound here compared to a generic LAN cable? Well, it seems to me that there is a small difference! It's not very audible, but there is. First of all, in a calmer and smoother presentation. Female vocals are less harsh (where they should be), they sound nicer and more natural (Amira Medunjanin, Eva Cassidy..). The piano at the beginning of Amira's song "Eleno Kerko" has a better and more audible timbre, as on Jarrett's The Köln Concert album The bells on the song Time (Pink Floyd) are better separated in sound, and it sounds a little more tonally correct. I didn't notice any changes on the bass (I didn't pay much attention). I appreciate the Placebo effect, but I've changed (AB) cables several times for the same songs and the impression is that it still has some bad effects, small ones by the way. I have extensive listening experience with dozens of components and cables that I've tried in my system and I try to keep a cool head here. These changes aren't really worth investing in an entry-level mid-range system. They were in my colleague's previous top-of-the-line system anyway. Of course, all my observations about sound are individual and subjective in nature, and that's our hobby. I'm looking ahead to getting some ethernet cables wired through my house with the intention to run ethernet from the router room into one bedroom and the living room. I'd like to understand any potential drawbacks from running only two cables (one to each location) and hooking up a 5 port PoE switch in each room compared to multiple cables to each room. I understand one cable will become saturated easier than multiple standalone cables back to router, however I'll never use multiple devices in any room simulatenously to max out a gigabit switch and Cat 6 cable. Also understand redundancy and the untidiness of a switch, but I'm expecting the single cable option plus switches to be much cheaper (please do correct me if this is not the case - I have yet to request quotes as I'm still planning). P.S. I have an Eero 6+ router with only one port and currently have a switch hooked up to service my devices via ethernet. I understand I'll effectively be daisy chaining switches with the single cable and switch arrangement. Would you expect any issues with this? I would like to start using Ethernet for my TVs and audio streamer instead of WiFi. My house has RG6 coax in every room in the house. It also has Ethernet in every room, but the cables are Cat 5e. There isn't a switch on the house, but all of the Ethernet cables are together in the basement. Should I upgrade the cables to Cat 6 or use MoCA 2.5 adapters with the coax? Hello everyone, When it comes to tech I don't have much knowledge other than the basics really. Anyways, I recently bought a cat6 cable to connect to my router into my box to watch tv. When I connect it up it only maxes out at 100mbps. When I go wireless it shows up as 867mbps so my internet can obviously go to higher speeds. I would prefer doing it through an ethernet cable as sometimes the connection can be sporadic and can get buffering. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this problem so that I can get faster speeds from my wired connection. We're building a house. The lumber got delivered recently. After it's under roof, at some point soon, I'm going to go in and manage my own low-voltage runs (or at least ethernet). But I've never done this before. I'm trying to self-educate. Could you all please offer me some advice? (1) If I do two CAT-6 drops in each room, what are your all's preferred ways to terminate? Two-port wall plates with some service loop behind the drywall? In a box? Inside the conduit somehow? (2) Is a punchdown tool and some blank RJ45 keystones enough? Is the job way easier with toolless keystone jacks or one of those passthrough crimper multitools or something? (3) What's a reasonable cable tester to buy, or cable testing solution? Just a $20 tone thing? Do I need a $100 Scout?' (4) This sounds dumb, but what happens at my basement demarc/networking closet area? I'll run the cable through smurf tube throughout the house to my wall drops, soffet POE camera spots, attic, etc., and the other end of the smurf tube will all terminate next to each other in the basement ceiling against one wall, so then... should I feed all those cables straight into a keystone patch panel on the rack I'm going to build? Or like do I.... build a patch panel into the drywall or something? I am failing to visualize what a bunch of CAT-6 cables are meant to look like coming out of my basement ceiling, or high up on the basement drywall, and the cleanest/best way to get those cables tidied into a rack with a gateway and switch and NVR and such. My lovely, wonderful, and absolute nusiance of a cat chewed up my Ethernet cable. Pic of the spoiled bastard for attention. Anyways, I know the most permanent solution is getting another 75foot cable and redoing my run but considering I'm in a rented apartment I do NOT want to undo all my nail down cable clips and then redo and make new holes. Cable is cat 6 and I use it to hit my 2.5gbps speeds, I'm sure there's gonna be SOME loss regardless of the route, but it I can get 2gbps or even 1.5gbps, I'd consider it a good enough temporary fix that is permanent. Any advice? I'm totally new to this, I've done some electrical work on my car and thought about just splicing the cables, but I know that's a bit of a nightmare because everything has to be in a specific order and shielded, so I'd likely get it to work but face huge signal loss. I needed to run ethernet through the concrete ceiling but making the hole wider wasn't an option so i just cut of the connector, stuck it through and then reconnected it on the other side like so. I found out afterwards that this is a Cat-5 cable so I replaced it today with 6a, but this is how it was for the last 6 months and it worked great. It is hidden behind a cover so it wasn't that much of a deal, but this time i just soldered it, shielded it properly and even applied shrinking tube so it's nicely done now.
