Why this cat6 cable is limited to 1gbps
Got 2gig fiber connection and need cable from the box to router, I need around 4m to place router in middle of house. Broadband company told me to use cat 6 cable. Google says cat 6 should be able to do 2gigabytes. On amazon their amazon choice recommended cat 6 cable got lot of reviews and good price but it says cat 6 max speed of 1 gig. I am in uk if that make any difference to cat standards submitted by /u/Pale-Yard-4497 to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Bad connection through long ethernet cable
I live in a university building where internet access is provided to each apartment through only one port. To get a wired connection to my work desk in another room, I pulled a 50 feet Cat 6 cable. However, I can't get my work VPN (Cloudflare WARP) to connect. It fails with CF_DNS_LOOKUP_FAILURE even though most websites seem to load normally. I ran a ping test to 8.8.8.8 and noticed a weird pattern where it seems to drop the connection every few seconds: 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=18 ttl=117 time=6.652 ms ping: sendto: No route to host ping: sendto: No route to host Request timeout for icmp_seq 19 ping: sendto: No route to host Request timeout for icmp_seq 20 ping: sendto: No route to host Request timeout for icmp_seq 21 ping: sendto: No route to host Request timeout for icmp_seq 22 Request timeout for icmp_seq 23 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=24 ttl=117 time=11.007 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=25 ttl=117 time=7.025 ms However, using a different Ethernet adapter borrowed from my wife seems to fix the connection. This makes me think the issue isn't with the cable but the ethernet to USB adapter I'm using to connect my Macbook. Any thoughts? submitted by /u/RevolutionaryBu to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Running two unshielded CAT 6 lines through the same conduit?
I know you can't run power and Ethernet parallel (same conduit) to each other or in close proximity. But can you run two ethernet lines parallel to each other and next to each other (same 1" conduit)? This would be for unshielded CAT 6. It's a matter of convenience, but if it's a bad idea I can certainly run a second conduit and separate them. Edit: thanks for all of the answers. Come to think of it, I have seen massive bundles of cable running in and out of server racks in rooms, I should have thought of that myself. Again, thanks all. Great conversation. submitted by /u/Remy_Jardin to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Ethernet cable issues, unstable WiFi. Any help troubleshooting?
Just got a brand spankin' new Cat 8 ethernet cable, routed it through the wall and floor for a direct connection from the PC to the router. The speed is consistently slow, hovering between 24-40kbit/s. WiFi has been unstable for a very long time, and consistently "wobbles" as can be seen in the image above. I've done my best in terms of troubleshooting drivers in regards to the ethernet cable, but that hasn't gotten me much of anywhere. I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to even begin with the WiFi. Anyone got any tips on what to check/do about this? submitted by /u/TechnicalRoll0 to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Cat 6 ethernet cable getting max 96Mbps
Hello everyone, i am trying to connect my xbox to my router through a Cat 6 ethernet cable thats already in the walls of my appartment. I have done the RJ45 connector on both ends, one goes in my xbox and the other in the router. The problem is that i am getting only around 96Mbps compared to the 300mbs i get if I plug the xbox straight in the router with a 3 feet patch cord. I also have a pair tester which shows pair 1 to 8 being well connected. So this is where I am at. I'm wondering if maybe my RJ45 connectors i bought on amazon are too cheap? Or if maybe someone here has an idea? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/L1lju1cee to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Transparent Ethernet (CAT 6) cable - Review
A colleague gave me a bunch of different cables that he used in his first high-end system. Among them is the Transparent Ethernet cable. A similar version of the Transparent sells for €710 (2m), which is not much compared to the Transparent Reference speaker (>€24,000) that I also have for testing. https://www.technologyfactory.eu/en/transparent-cable/digital-cables-ethernet/transparent-ethernet/a-21658-10001123 Otherwise, I don't really believe that an Ethernet cable (even a very high-quality one) can make a difference in sound. That's why I haven't tried them yet. And is there a difference in sound here compared to a generic LAN cable? Well, it seems to me that there is a small difference! It's not very audible, but there is. First of all, in a calmer and smoother presentation. Female vocals are less harsh (where they should be), they sound nicer and more natural (Amira Medunjanin, Eva Cassidy..). The piano at the beginning of Amira's song "Eleno Kerko" has a better and more audible timbre, as on Jarrett's The Köln Concert album The bells on the song Time (Pink Floyd) are better separated in sound, and it sounds a little more tonally correct. I didn't notice any changes on the bass (I didn't pay much attention). I appreciate the Placebo effect, but I've changed (AB) cables several times for the same songs and the impression is that it still has some bad effects, small ones by the way. I have extensive listening experience with dozens of components and cables that I've tried in my system and I try to keep a cool head here. These changes aren't really worth investing in an entry-level mid-range system. They were in my colleague's previous top-of-the-line system anyway. Of course, all my observations about sound are individual and subjective in nature, and that's our hobby. Get the popcorn ready! :)) https://preview.redd.it/xrwhakrzholg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2000a74767ee6e82dffc56564976b91498518993 https://preview.redd.it/2ci1gprzholg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7fe52d86c39a754f9b862f710224bf3a037f43bd https://preview.redd.it/3y3slmrzholg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26b2da4d53e148b1dc4b90c0457cbcb3070b8ffa https://preview.redd.it/cn8bunrzholg1.jpg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40cbc9e1d2180591e052c6327e56c2c04c8acf66 https://preview.redd.it/e0oyvkrzholg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c0c299da20282cd4afad7dc5db66c5d7c7ccb47d https://preview.redd.it/8b9evm23iolg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f27dd827ee396f1aedf9309feed3f7eedc59b63f https://preview.redd.it/wa4hev3siolg1.jpg?width=4624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64d26f24dc01bd52f21fa1bd0ea3d23b6fe63501 submitted by /u/Dedar33 to r/audiophile [link] [comments]

Multiple Ethernet Cables per Room vs Single Cables with Local Switches
I'm looking ahead to getting some ethernet cables wired through my house with the intention to run ethernet from the router room into one bedroom and the living room. I'd like to understand any potential drawbacks from running only two cables (one to each location) and hooking up a 5 port PoE switch in each room compared to multiple cables to each room. I understand one cable will become saturated easier than multiple standalone cables back to router, however I'll never use multiple devices in any room simulatenously to max out a gigabit switch and Cat 6 cable. Also understand redundancy and the untidiness of a switch, but I'm expecting the single cable option plus switches to be much cheaper (please do correct me if this is not the case - I have yet to request quotes as I'm still planning). P.S. I have an Eero 6+ router with only one port and currently have a switch hooked up to service my devices via ethernet. I understand I'll effectively be daisy chaining switches with the single cable and switch arrangement. Would you expect any issues with this? Upgrade Cat 6 or use MoCA?
I would like to start using Ethernet for my TVs and audio streamer instead of WiFi. My house has RG6 coax in every room in the house. It also has Ethernet in every room, but the cables are Cat 5e. There isn't a switch on the house, but all of the Ethernet cables are together in the basement. Should I upgrade the cables to Cat 6 or use MoCA 2.5 adapters with the coax? Cat 6 cable maxing out at 100mbps
Hello everyone, When it comes to tech I don't have much knowledge other than the basics really. Anyways, I recently bought a cat6 cable to connect to my router into my box to watch tv. When I connect it up it only maxes out at 100mbps. When I go wireless it shows up as 867mbps so my internet can obviously go to higher speeds. I would prefer doing it through an ethernet cable as sometimes the connection can be sporadic and can get buffering. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this problem so that I can get faster speeds from my wired connection. Any help much appreciated, thank you! submitted by /u/Longjumping-Use4369 to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Is this the best Ethernet cable for the money?
So I need a 125ft Ethernet cable but almost most of the ones are like 28awg or 30awg which is bad. Until I found this one that is 24awg and is in my budget (kinda). I saw one 23awg too but it was 50 bucks which is too much ngl. So anyways, would you say this is the best cable I can get for 30 bucks? And should I buy it? Also I don’t need any crazy speeds. All I need is 250mbs. Or should I save some money and get a 28awg? submitted by /u/Matteo_the7best to r/ethernet [link] [comments]

First-time buyer, zero DIY experience – advice needed for running Cat 6 in upstairs flat (never even used a drill)
Hi everyone, I’m a first-time buyer and I need some guidance before I do anything stupid 😅 I want to be very clear up front: I have zero DIY experience. I have never drilled a hole, never chased a wall, and don’t really know what’s realistic vs what should be left to a professional. Property details: • 2-bedroom, upstairs flat in an older 4-in-a-block building • Construction appears to be mostly solid brick • There is loft access above the flat • All network equipment will live in a bedroom cupboard (all cables to terminate there) What I want to do: Run Cat 6 Ethernet cables from the cupboard to multiple rooms so I can avoid Wi-Fi where possible. Cable runs required: • Living room – 2 × Cat 6 • Bedroom 1 – 1 × Cat 6 • Bedroom 2 – 1 × Cat 6 • Kitchen – 1 × Cat 6 • Hallway ceiling (centre) – 1 × Cat 6 for a UniFi wireless access point My experience level: Absolute beginner. I have never even held a drill. Assume I don’t know basic things and please explain like I’m five. What I’m trying to understand: • Is this even realistic as a DIY job for someone like me? • Would using the loft make this easier/cleaner? • Am I likely to need to drill through solid brick, or is there a safer route? • What parts of this are “definitely hire a pro” vs “possible for a beginner with patience”? • Any common beginner mistakes I should absolutely avoid? I’m not trying to cheap out or do unsafe work—I just want to understand the scope before deciding whether to learn, partially DIY, or hire someone. Happy to add photos if that helps. Thanks in advance for any advice 🙏 submitted by /u/GenericUser104 to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Is any ethernet cable reliable?
Recently started looking into a potential ethernet cable purchase, note that it's mostly gonna be used by my PS5. I saw everyone saying something called cat6a is fine and mostly standard, but I got recommended a cheaper one called cat8, it's on sale right now and is cheaper than the cat6a options. Should I go for this or just buy a cat6a? I really don't understand the differences so any help is appreciated. submitted by /u/GiveMeLEMONSSS to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Do I need shielded ethernet cable to run near my furnace and hot water heater ?
I need to extend my wired network to another part of the room. To do this I need to run the cable through a small room that contains my gas furnace and gas water heater. The cable would be approximately 1 and 1/2 ft from the water heater and 2 ft from the gas furnace. The cable would run against the wall surrounding the area. Do I need to get shielded ethernet cable? I recently upgraded my provider provided router (WIFI 6e gateway) to a tp-link be6500 WIFI 7 router and now my wifi is faster than my ethernet connected desktop, how is this possible? Do I need a newer cat-6 or something?
My home internet is only rated for single gig speed, believe me I am not complaining about this, just confused because the only device in my apartment that could possibly use 2 gigs is my desktop computer. I'm thinking it has to be a cable issue, I did just pick the most affordable 25ft at bestbuy because it had to reach my centrally located living room spot I chose for the router. building out CAT-6 in my new house
We're building a house. The lumber got delivered recently. After it's under roof, at some point soon, I'm going to go in and manage my own low-voltage runs (or at least ethernet). But I've never done this before. I'm trying to self-educate. Could you all please offer me some advice? (1) If I do two CAT-6 drops in each room, what are your all's preferred ways to terminate? Two-port wall plates with some service loop behind the drywall? In a box? Inside the conduit somehow? (2) Is a punchdown tool and some blank RJ45 keystones enough? Is the job way easier with toolless keystone jacks or one of those passthrough crimper multitools or something? (3) What's a reasonable cable tester to buy, or cable testing solution? Just a $20 tone thing? Do I need a $100 Scout?' (4) This sounds dumb, but what happens at my basement demarc/networking closet area? I'll run the cable through smurf tube throughout the house to my wall drops, soffet POE camera spots, attic, etc., and the other end of the smurf tube will all terminate next to each other in the basement ceiling against one wall, so then... should I feed all those cables straight into a keystone patch panel on the rack I'm going to build? Or like do I.... build a patch panel into the drywall or something? I am failing to visualize what a bunch of CAT-6 cables are meant to look like coming out of my basement ceiling, or high up on the basement drywall, and the cleanest/best way to get those cables tidied into a rack with a gateway and switch and NVR and such. Thanks so much!! submitted by /u/vexion to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Advice on fixing cat-chewed cable; punch down junction box or crimp and coupler?
My lovely, wonderful, and absolute nusiance of a cat chewed up my Ethernet cable. Pic of the spoiled bastard for attention. Anyways, I know the most permanent solution is getting another 75foot cable and redoing my run but considering I'm in a rented apartment I do NOT want to undo all my nail down cable clips and then redo and make new holes. Cable is cat 6 and I use it to hit my 2.5gbps speeds, I'm sure there's gonna be SOME loss regardless of the route, but it I can get 2gbps or even 1.5gbps, I'd consider it a good enough temporary fix that is permanent. Any advice? I'm totally new to this, I've done some electrical work on my car and thought about just splicing the cables, but I know that's a bit of a nightmare because everything has to be in a specific order and shielded, so I'd likely get it to work but face huge signal loss. Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/BohunkFunk to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

There are so many references. update with the DAC Twinax cable (between the Cloud Gateway Giber and the switch) choice of SFP+ transceivers : https://www.fs.com/eu-en/products/200489.html choice of fiber optical cable (single-mode dual G.657 A2) : https://www.fs.com/eu-en/products/40191.html Because of the heat wave in my area, I'd rather avoid cooper cable and its hot SFP+ modules if possible. This fiber optical is 1m long as you can check on FS shop. Not pricy. Thanks in advance. >>>> Configuration updated (picture 2): a passive DAC Twinax cable between the conroller (Cloud Gateway Fiber) and the switch. New choice of the cable would be this product : https://www.fs.com/fr/products/40109.html?attribute=8723&id=2354437 https://preview.redd.it/ovouxli1zqlf1.jpg?width=2336&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=91965f87948ef69b696b5b1603045f5b133dcdd5 submitted by /u/Eastern-Rock129 to r/Ubiquiti [link] [comments]

Why do People say not to buy over cat 6?
Hello I have been looking around for a ethernet cable, and I have seen people say to buy cat 5/6 cables, when you can get cat 8 cables that give you faster speeds for only 6$, why not get the cat 8? submitted by /u/Bulky_Target1416 to r/HomeNetworking [link] [comments]

Why do ethernet cables even have shielding??
I needed to run ethernet through the concrete ceiling but making the hole wider wasn't an option so i just cut of the connector, stuck it through and then reconnected it on the other side like so. I found out afterwards that this is a Cat-5 cable so I replaced it today with 6a, but this is how it was for the last 6 months and it worked great. It is hidden behind a cover so it wasn't that much of a deal, but this time i just soldered it, shielded it properly and even applied shrinking tube so it's nicely done now. (For anyone wondering: The clamps were so fiddly to work with because the cable is so high up that I switched the method halfway through.) submitted by /u/ehrenmannNo1 to r/techsupportmacgyver [link] [comments]
