It really fucking sucks to go to the vet for something you think is minor and come home with an empty carrier
His name was Oscar, he was 10 years old but I had him for 6, since I was 13. He was feral after being abused and dumped on my family farm. I was planning on taking him to college with me in September. Edit: My comment explaining didnt show up but he had a urinary blockage that I didn't catch. Vet bill was estimated 2k-4k for overnight treatment with a low chance of surviving the anesthetic due to high potassium levels, as well as high rates of it happening again. I was under the impression he was constipated or something because he was straining in the litterbox and yelled when you touched his stomach. I took him first thing in the morning after I noticed cuz it happened at night. I didnt have the money for treatment nor did I want him to die without me there so I made the decision to euthanize. Edit 2: Originally didnt post the reason because I was scared it would get downvoted and people saying it was my fault for not going sooner or doing more, but you guys have helped me feel much better knowing there wasn't much else I could do. Thank you. I think I'm dissociated because my whole body feels numb and I don't really feel like he's gone, or crushing sadness. But when I had to feed my other cat and there was no wailing for food or fighting him to get off the counter, it hit me and I cried on the floor for like 20 minutes. submitted by /u/Fickle-Hour4458 to r/cats [link] [comments]

Please help me find a trustworthy cat carrier (I have betrayed by the Catit Cabrio)
Edit: title should be “I have *been* betrayed” sorry Hello! I am a new cat owner, of a gorgeous 2y/o moggy that came to me via the local shelter. I spent a lot of time preparing for his arrival, making my space (now his space) as cosy as possible, so that this sweet lad would feel safe despite his previously tumultuous existence. However, our first vet check-up approaches and I need a replacement for the shelter-provided cat carrier, which was definitely too small for him (and presumably full of bad memories and rancid vibes). Here is my problem: I don’t have a car, and typically walk everywhere, which is how I planned on taking my cat for his check-up. I live a 10 min walk from the vet. Too close to justify a taxi really—which, if we account for time spent waiting, etc, would likely actually prolong the time my cat spends in the carrier. I’m not particularly weak, and he’s not particularly big (under 5kg), but for stability purposes I would much prefer a carrier with a strap I could wear across my body. That way I can still support with my arms but won’t be afraid I’ll drop him if caught off-guard. It seems like most experts strongly recommend a hard plastic or metal carrier, particularly one that’s top-loading for ease of access. I have done A Lot of research into the best carriers (some would say “too much”), and the Catit Cabrio ticked all my boxes and came out on top—for most people. I am of the unlucky minority that shelled out for this premium carrier then found that the plastic parts on mine did not slot together correctly (it turns out this is a pretty common factory fault), and was left with a flimsy mess that looked and felt ready to fall apart when I picked it up before any weight was even added. 🙃🙃🙃 (it was also maybe too big? But that’s a minor issue compared to its construction) That went back to the shop, and now I turn to you, the good people of CatsUK, in my time of need. We have a week before the vet appointment (and have already lost a full week of planned carrier assimilation time to the whole Cabrio debacle). I am willing to be open-minded about style/material, but would prefer not to opt for a backpack, as it seems most vets consistently warn against them (unless an expert on the sub has other thoughts?). I also think a stroller/rolling option would be difficult for the street I live on, as the pavement isn’t flat or particularly wide in places. Alternatively, is there a (safe, correct) way to attach a sturdy shoulder strap to a traditional hard carrier that doesn’t feel risky? Can I put the hard carrier in a large well-ventilated bag? Do they already make bags for that purpose? Please help me, I have spent so many hours researching this, I’ve lost all sense of perspective. submitted by /u/hamboneshowpoodle to r/CatsUK [link] [comments]

Cannot get cat into carrier. He is clearly stressed and is extremely combative. I may have to cancel his appointment
Usually he’s fine if I lure him in with some food and let him eat in there. But he’s having dental surgery (two tooth extractions) and can’t eat beforehand. I tried the burrito method but he quickly became combative and I could not get him in. Several subsequent attempts only got worse and now he’s stressed and hiding under the bed. He’s extremely combative, stressed, panting, making horrible noises. He’s usually a very sweet cat but he has become an absolute nightmare in the span of 10 minutes. I can’t even get him into a burrito. I’m at a loss. I need to get him to the vet and I cannot do this again. I think I’ll have to wait another week for the next appointment. Should I ask for gabapentin or something? submitted by /u/Umbra427 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Looking for suggestions on the BEST cat carrier -- either a bag or crate, does anyone have suggestions?
The last one I purchased on Amazon claimed to be suitable for larger cats but was too small for my 14-pound guy. He fit inside but it was too cramped. I wanted something a little spacier and with more room. Does anyone have specific product recommendations? I would love to be able to order something from Chewy or Amazon, but I want to ask others for advice this time because I just don't trust stock photos anymore. submitted by /u/PeterLoew88 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Cat as mail carriers in 1870s
In the 1870s, the city of Liège in Belgium conducted an unusual experiment involving cats as mail carriers. The Belgian Society for the Elevation of the Domestic Cat trained 37 cats to deliver messages in small waterproof bags attached to their necks. The cats were released in villages around Liège with the goal of returning home with the mail, similar to how carrier pigeons operated. While some cats did successfully return, the overall results were inconsistent, as the cats tended to follow their own whims rather than strict delivery routes. Due to their unreliable nature, the experiment was never repeated. submitted by /u/JimatJimat to r/Catswithjobs [link] [comments]

The war has started. We are in danger. We need 20+ cat carriers to evacuate our rescued cats. Please help this is their only chance.
The war has already started. We are in serious danger. Any moment could bring destruction, and lives human and animal could be lost. We are doing everything we can to protect our rescued cats, but we are not prepared to move them to safety. We urgently need 30+ cat carrier boxes to evacuate our babies, but the cost is more than we can afford right now. These carriers are not just boxes they’re their only chance at survival. We’re waiting for the call to evacuate. The fear is real. The time is running out. Please, I’m begging you help us save these innocent souls who have already survived so much. If you have ever believed in compassion, this is the time to act. Your kindness can save lives. What kind of cat carrier should I get?
My family recently adopted a 2-year-old cat, and we need to get a carrier for him. My previous cat had had a hard plastic carrier that opened at the top and front, but I no longer have the carrier because I gave away her things after she passed away a couple of years ago. (I hadn't expected to get a new cat this soon; it's a long story.) I didn't like the carrier that I'd had for my previous cat. It was heavy and, no matter how careful I was, I always felt like I was jostling the cat while carrying her. I remember seeing other people at the vet's office who had their cats in what looked like backpacks, but they wore them so that the cat was on their stomach. I thought this seemed like a cool idea, but all the ones I can find online are designed to be worn on your back. (I'm guessing the people in the vet office were wearing this style of carrier backwards?) Is this style of carrier okay for a cat and, if so, is there a specific brand I should get? Does it have to be worn on my back, or can I wear it backwards? (I'm worried about not being able to see the cat.) If I don't get this type of carrier, what type should I get? Ironically, when I google cat carrier reviews, I keep seeing the hard plastic kind that I got rid of being recommended. Is that really the best kind? submitted by /u/Amanda39 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

Best carrier for cat that’s terrified of carrier.
I've been taking care of stray cats I finally got one of the kittens to love me! He loves attention, food and playing but doesn't like to be held and if you pick him up he'll immediately jump down. Silly me thought it would be so simple to get him in a hard carrier to go to the vet and I had to cancel. I can't even touch the crate now. I put it out weeks before the appointment, with a blanket, treats etc and he wanted no part of it. Should I try a soft but sturdy carrier or buy another hard one with a top door? Honestly I'm afraid just the sight of another hard carrier will immediately cause him to panic. He's very sweet but I feel like I ruined any chance by trying to force him into that carrier. Even if I put his favorite food within 3/4 feet of it and stand back he won't go near the food. Also, I'm carrying for about 7/8 strays so I can't spend a whole lot on a carrier. There's an adult male I'd like to take to the vet too so I'm hoping to be able to use the same carrier later on. submitted by /u/JustCardiologist1729 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

What is the best and safest cat carrier out there?
Money is no object: I'm looking for the safest possible cat carrier for the car. I'd like something that clips into the car seat hooks that are built into my car for extra security, but at the least something that can really be locked down and buckled in.. let me know what your recs are!! Tysm :) submitted by /u/Possible_Ad_6907 to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

I found the air tag in the cat carrier
Please read my other posts for more context but a tl:dr; I’m pretty sure my ex was/is trying to kill me. There were a few instances that I wrote off as “accidents'' until I think he poisoned my soup that was specifically for me. On Christmas he found where we were staying and slashed my tires and threw a heavy patio chair and planter through a window. He still hasn’t been caught. I checked everywhere I could think of and still couldn't figure out how he was tracking us. I blocked him on everything including email after he sent me pics of his target practice sheets among other things. I got a cheap burner phone. My daughter was out of school for winter break so he didn’t follow her or anything. I checked my car for a tracker. Still nothing. I do not have an iphone so I couldn’t check whatever app a air tag is attached to. My cat is harness trained and wears a collar but there was no tracker. Until today I decided to “feel up” (sorry only way I can describe it) the carrier. I ran my fingers over every inch of it and felt a bump on the bottom soft side. There was no new stitching or obvious cut. He had to use a seam ripper along the stitching. It was undetectable and I almost missed it. He had to have had help because I’ve never seen him sew anything. Probably the same person who is letting him hide now. If his excuse for the air tag was to track my cat he would have put it on his collar or harness because that is what he would wear when we go on walks/car rides. My cat would never go in his carrier unless I was planning on leaving for more than a few days. I have no idea how long it has been there nor do I know how far the tracker works but now we aren’t safe where we are, AGAIN. I feel disgusting and I feel like hunted prey. This is so unnerving and I’m so uncomfortable. Who the f*ck was I living with? submitted by /u/amme04 to r/TwoXChromosomes [link] [comments]

Some piece of subhuman trash left this cat in a carrier on the side of the road in the rain.

Someone left him in a carrier outside the shelter overnight in the pouring rain. He’s the sweetest cat ever

PSA: PLEASE buy appropriately sized carriers for EACH of your cats
As a veterinary worker and cat caretaker, I am shocked by how many people either do not have enough carriers for their cats or have poorly sized ones. Not to mention there are many carrier designs I hate, but having one is better than trying to carry an angry cat around in your arms. You should never be transporting multiple cats in a carrier once they’re about 6mo or older, and especially when going somewhere stressful like the vets. Cramming two adult cats in a carrier may seem okay if they’re not fighting, but it’s very frustrating for vet staff trying to work with one at a time. And sometimes we need to perform a procedure that may leave a cat irritated or they have to wake up from anesthesia and it’s usually done in their carrier, but when we have to put two cats in one suddenly things are difficult when they don’t need to be. Also consider sizing. Your cat should be able to fit in the carrier and turn around without being shoved in. Alternatively, an oversized dog crate creates its own issues as it leaves your cat less secure during handling and just plain takes up a ton of space for no reason. Carting around a dog carrier half my height just to treat a cat is a hassle, and I can feel the cat inside falling all over as we move. The best carriers are hard sided and have a front and top opening for easy loading, access, and treatment. My top preferred carrier designs are: This one (or anything similar with hard sides and front/top opening) or this one (no top opening but top comes off) Sherpa soft carriers are good too these are ok-ish Please avoid carriers that: require you to unzip the entire thing to get the cat out, are those weird triangular ones, foldable flimsy ones, only have a front door and no ability to unscrew/remove the top. Wall of shame of worst carriers: I HATE THESE possibly the worst kind maybe fun for a walk but not for the vet’s maybe ok for travel but again, NOT the vet’s the actual worst ones that just have one zipper for the whole bag and when you unzip it the whole thing just falls open THE WORST A carrier may be the last thing on your mind and people often pick carriers that are stylish or easy to store, but you need to consider emergency situations and your cat’s safety. If you do not have enough and/or proper carriers yet, please get one ASAP before it’s too late. A sincere thank you from all veterinary stuff who wish to take care of your kitties as best as we can! submitted by /u/u1tr4me0w to r/CatAdvice [link] [comments]

I posted about a stray cat bringing me her kitten. Well here’s an update. We moved them to our screened in back porch. I gave them a cat carrier with a blanket and we feed her twice a day. We do plan on getting her spayed when she’s done nursing. Thank you guys for the love and kind words :)
