The Ghost in the Chrome Hearts’ Machine It is one of fashion’s most veiled stories and also one of its saddest. Long before Chrome Hearts became a billion-dollar playground for rock stars and fashion royalty, the brand was built by the man whose name has all but erased from its history. A mild-mannered, self-taught silversmith from the northwestern Yakama Nation , Leonard Kamhout was not just another hired-hand; his were THE hands that forged the vision, the aesthetics and feel that would become Chrome Hearts. Before making history Kamhout was a card-carrying Native American, a lifelong vegetarian, a meditator, a hippie who once reigned as a state champion fencer. He lived by principle and craft as a true old world western metalworker. At Edward H. Bohlin & Co., the legendary Hollywood saddle-maker, he spent nearly a decade hammering and carving gold and silver the hard way, no molds, no shortcuts. From those years came a skill that caught the attention of Hollywood itself: Even Larry Hagman’s belt buckle in the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger of Dallas. His pieces were not props; they were statements in metal, etched into pop culture before the internet could freeze such moments in time. The Turning Point By the late ’80s, Chrome Hearts co-founder John Bowman would approach Leonard for his signature silver work so they could highlight the chrome leather gear with precious metals “to set it apart” from standard biker wear readily available in the late 80s. Leonard wasn’t simply contracted as a seasonal model maker. He was in fact a founding partner secured early on to elevate the brands ascetic & feel which he would do steadily for seven years. It was these early years of silversmithing that would set the brand apart world wide. Everything from the clasps, rings, links, crosses buckles, and appliqués the brand would become recognizable for, originated from his drawings, which he would hammer into masters, and carve into the finished original models Chrome would produce & market across the globe. Leonard wasn’t just the designer; he was the fabricator, as well as the creative director who would articulate the world of Chrome into the forms & shapes that have carried the brand for nearly a half century. Richard Stark and his wife, Laurie would sell/run the business. Leonard would build its mythology in silver. For this visionary old-world skill and goodwill he would deliver, The Deal was simple: one-third ownership alongside Bowman and Stark in equal partnership. When Cher presented the trio with the CFDA Accessories Award in 1992, she recognized him not as the help, but as a founder. Trust was implied. Lawyers were not and soon came the unraveling. Richard Stark demanded that each partner be given his own award from the CFDA, something previously unheard of. The unity cracked. Leonard’s stake dissolved into nothing. What remained was a survival pittance of $5,000 to $10,000 a month at best, tied to a stark caveat: no piece-no pay. For the last decade of his life, the man who had originated the CH masterpieces all know and love was reduced to a piecemeal “work for hire” consultant on the very icons he had created. In 2016 when Chrome Hearts celebrated its 25th anniversary with a lavish coffee-table book, Leonard’s name and contributions were omitted entirely, left nonexistent. The Quiet Erasure On December 31, 2016 in Stevenson, Washington Leonard Kamhout would end his life at the age of 70, a father of four, and still in his final days, a recluse desperate to carve and piecemeal silver parts for a company that refused to acknowledge his worth or the mark he made in fashion as a true American artisan. The Starks would not attend his funeral. They did not offer help to even cover basic cremation costs. Instead, they moved to claim what little remained: Leonard’s final sketches, his work notes, and the few original masters he had yet to deliver, artifacts that quietly tell a story of a man and his work, years after CH had spent decades denying his relevance or contributions. Fashion loves mythology, but rarely does it reward the creatives who build it. Today Chrome generates more than a billion annually, The Starks conduct throughout this generational tragedy can buy the world time and again. What they can’t turn back time on is Leonard’s trust or talents- leaving a hollow shell of a company skill-strapped, having to appoint their offsprings “creative directors” leaving no trace or legacy of the man who only made it all. Kamhout was left with very little personally but the peace denied him in life and a creative body of work that despite all efforts continues to testify to this day, posthumously building fortunes for his one time gate-keepers, ultimately becoming their prisoner in the kingdom he built.
