I remember seeing robot vacuums years ago and thinking they were kind of neat, but at the time, they didn’t really make sense for my life. I can’t remember my exact living situation back then, but I definitely didn’t have a long-haired cat. I also remember thinking the price didn’t quite match the convenience they’d offer me at that point. Fast forward to now-and please be kind, I know I can be impulsive. I was buying some last-minute gifts and came across an iRobot on sale at a really good price. I didn’t overthink it: I checked overall reviews, compared prices briefly, and decided it was worth it. I fully own that I could’ve done more research. My only regret so far is not getting one with self-emptying features or the vacuum/mop combo. That said, it’s still been absolutely worth it. Obligatory occurred today. Sorry if it’s too long. As part of my job, I attended a conference as a speaker, this is the kind of event where people network in between sessions and the kind with promotional merch from sponsors. As soon as I arrived, I noticed that one of the tech giants had a table with some of their merch and an Amazon Echo Dot. That’s neat! I thought. Throughout the day, I visited the different tables and grabbed some of the trinkets they had. Stickers, a keychain, some funny socks, yet the echo dot remained there. I noticed that periodically they would restock their supply of things people took as they chatted. Near the end of the day, I gathered the courage to speak to the rep that was manning the table with the echo dot. I really have no use for an echo dot, but I recently got a digital doorbell and It works with the Alexa ecosystem and I thought it might be cool to get the doorbell to ring upstairs, especially if it was for free. I didn’t want to miss up on the chance of taking home another piece of domotica, just because “I didn’t ask”. Me: hey! What do you have to do to get the echo dot. Rep: oh it’s easy, all I need is your business card. Me: oh I don’t have a business card. Rep: no problem! Do you have linked in? Me: yes I do! *spends a good 2.5 minutes trying to log in, resetting my password, figuring out the 2FA all the while speaking to the nice rep” Me: here is the qr. Rep: great! Scans it. At this moment, someone came over and told the rep that they needed to go somewhere else. The rep got up from the table, gave me two thumbs up and said: “Ok you’re all good!! “ And just left me there alone. The echo dot on the table. I stood there for what must have been a good 55 seconds thinking about what to do next. Is that it? The echo dot is mine? The next speaker was just starting in the room next door so I thought “I guess I’m good to take it home, I better get back to the session”. I grabbed the little guy from the table and quickly found a seat at the auditorium, the echo dot sat on the chair next to me. While the speaker was presenting, I noticed that some of the organizers were hastily walking up and down the aisles, looking around the crowd. A sense of doom started to stir within me. One of them quickly paused in the aisle next to me, but didn’t say anything. They left. Whew! I’m In the clear!!! I thought. I was not. When the speaker finished their presentation. A very nice person, one of the organizers sat down next to me, this is when I knew I had FU. She very nicely and politely explained that the echo dot that was occupying the seat next to me (she pointed to it) was the prize to a very special draw they were going to have at the end of the session. She then very nicely asked if it was ok if she took it back to the main area. Again she pointed at it. I quickly grabbed from the seat and gave it to her; I couldn’t get it away from me fast enough. I apologized but not a lot of words came out of me, I was fully aware of the FU. I wanted the earth to swallow me. If I wasn’t next on the roster of speakers, I would’ve bolted from the event. And moved to Finland, probably. TLDR: inadvertently mistook a two thumbs up as a sign that I could take a tech gadget from a work event thinking that big tech was just giving away free stuff. Maybe I just suck at the game, but I just can't get past the midgame. I had a very nice colony, plenty of food, materials, energy production, around 18 colonists with only one death so far. I ran out of components in my map but managed to get to the fabrication bench to make more. Everything was looking up. Selling clothes and muffalos, getting some nice weapons... I just did my first orbital trade, and I was even making a small brewery. Then a huge mechanoid cluster landed, at the same time as 2 big raids from a quest came in. I stopped one 30 tribal raid through the north that kindly went through my kill box. Then the 40 pirates with assault riffles killed some mechanoids, breached my walls, killed most of my colonists, kidnapped the rest, and left while leaving half the mechanoids alive to kill me. There are 74 human corpses in my map, and around 30 pirates escaped. My pawns are alldead or kindnapped. Just the man in black left and a couple of half-dead pawns, vs 3 centipedes and half a cluster yet to attack. We'll see if I can deal with the mechs but my odds don't look great. At least this time the colony is not made of wood so it didn't burn down to the ground. Update1 before posting: some allies landed in pods to help, some died, and fled. Not a single mechanoid died. Update 2: well, Obviously my emergency chemfuel generator is in a woden section of the colony: Luckily the rain put the fire out. Only a single pawn left, incapable of violence, even the man in black died. He is locked in the hospital with no food left and every mood debuff known to mankind. Update 3: Everyone’s dead. Only I remain—poor Vinc—cowering, hiding in a cold prison cell, just waiting for the inevitable. I can hear the mechanoids tearing everything apart. Every passing second, I’m one step closer to the sweet release of death. The crows have broken free from their pen. They’re feasting on the fallen, gorging on human flesh while they still can, before the mechanoids turn their guns on them too. The lights flicker… then go out. The end is near. I can hear even more mechanoids coming. If only I could muster the courage to end it all now. Gunshots ring out in the empty rooms. Our allies keep trying to save anyone who is left, they don't know there is no hope. I can't take it anymore. I tried to come out and fight. Unnfortunately they didn't have the decency to end me. I can barely move. The smell of rotting and burning flesh is choking me. I am so hungry, but I can't even crawl. Goodbye, friends. We had a good time, for a little while. So... where did I go wrong? I'm feeling like re-assessing the kinds of gadgets I'm using on a regular basis and trying to discover some things I probably haven't known about that might improve my life considerably that I'm sure this community has multiple of for various things such that having the product enables the whole hobby. I've come here before for cooking tools recommendations and always open to more but I'm feeling like I should be able to consider more than just a smart phone and a smart watch / fitbit as a regular user. Personally even smart watches have limits because of battery life but I wear glasses and feel like there's gotta be something affordable and simple for glasses wearers without necessarily going overboard with an augmented reality headset. I’m going to explain my experience more in depth, because I like to share my thoughts on this switch. I hope this reaches people with similar interest. ■ First, a long time review of my now old smartphone: Until this year’s spring (2025), my phone was the Samsung Galaxy S9, which I bought in the fall of 2018. (So, to be exact, it’s 6 years and 7 months in usage, from only me.) At the time, I didn’t want the curved display style, but I wanted all the other specs, so I tolerated the edge design and got used to it. (Even after it fell down several times, the display never broke (without screen protection). There are just very small scratches everywhere, which are not noticeable.) To its release (2018) and some years later, it has been a really good phone. ► What “broke” the phone one after another, which collectively led me to replace it finally?: -After probably 3 years, the battery life gradually wore off (I bought a power bank to handle it, but it’s still annoying.) -After a few years, the internal storage is always full. (even with my SD-card. I love taking pictures, saving art, memes and other stuff, heh. ^^') I deleted many apps, but today’s apps require too much internal storage. –Phone got very slow and laggy, because its storage is always full, which is annoying when I wanted to quickly take photos or access information swiftly. –Phone gets hot, which slows down its computing processing. -It developed something like a “loose contact” on the USB-C port (after ~3-4 years). Sometimes it wouldn’t load or the loading would bug and go on and off the whole time. (I would stop the loading and try another cable or blow away any possible dirt, like with old Gameboy Pokémon editions, until it would load normally again.) -The screen got burned in, after about 5 years. (Surprisingly, this didn’t annoy me. But just letting you know.) (Old tech flex: The S9 screen has a Super-AMOLED display with 1440 Pixel x 2960 Pixel and ~570 ppi density. You can set its screen resolution to HD+, FHD+ or WQHD+.) -Obviously, there are no more safety updates. -Many apps on my phone became increasingly buggy. (after 5-6 years) –I couldn’t update or install some apps anymore, because my Android version was too old. (after 5-6 years) –These apps didn’t bug in the past, but they are more and more designed for modern software, so my S9 can’t run them flawlessly. With today’s policy, of longer software guarantees for mobile phones, I believe (and hope) that apps will work well for a longer time on these modern phones (= truly 7 years with almost no issues). ■ The Galaxy S25 experience: I know what technical features I gave up with the S25 (no headphone jack, no heart rate monitor, no LED-notification light, …) However, since I discovered an adapter that converts USB-C to a „3.5mm-Klinke“ (headphone jack) * and another one to Klinke + USB-C, accepting the goodbye of the notification LED that I wanted so bad in the past, and still having and using my working S9 for the heart rate monitor, I accepted this “new smartphone way of life”. ►The differences/improvements I noticed so far in my first month (not everything is perfect): -Obviously, the minimalistic packaging. (I knew what I would (not) get, but it’s still funny to see it myself in comparison to my S9. (picture 6) But anyway, I bought a high-quality charger (and a few other things), so my phone should last longer with a good battery life.) -The S25 display apparently has a lower pixel density (~498 PPI) than the S9 (~570 PPI), BUT it still looks slightly sharper than the S9 on the second setting (FHD+ 2220x1080). I suspect that’s because the software design was improved to show a better quality, and the apps are more optimized for the latest Android version. My conclusion based on my experience: Nobody truly needs WQHD+ on a mobile phone. (the need only starts on a tablet/monitor) -The S25 and S9 are pretty much the same size. (only around a 2mm difference in width) But I still notice that the S25 feels a bit bigger in my hand. Probably because of the straight angular edges too. In other words, my S9 feels more handy, like a pebble. (okay wait, the S3 mini is the true cute pebble.) My opinion: the S25 showed me again, that phones of this size are already big. The S3 mini is a small handy phone, the S5 is wide but still manageable, the S9 is a slim big phone and the S25 is a normal big phone. In German, the mobile phone is called „handy“, because it’s a device used with your hands and handy. And that’s how it should stay in the future: HANDY~ A handy phone should stay holdable with one hand, without causing cramps in my fingers/hand. If you want a bigger phone, then buy a tablet. (Or if you have big hands, then okay, get the Plus version.) -A few things work a tiny bit faster on my S9, like taking screenshots, because of the extra animations or pauses in the S25 animations. I still have to get used to it. -The vibration motor in the S25 is weaker than the one on the S9. I don’t notice it as fast as before, e.g. as an wake-up alarm. On the other hand, the S25 does some funny vibrations with variations in some apps, which is a gimmick I like. -On the S25, some apps have (more) widgets, but some have less OR the widgets are not that customizable anymore. ► What I like of the Galaxy S25: -The battery life is obviously a blessing for me right now. Lasting one day without one charging? Yessss, my phone is still alive. (If I would watch very much videos on it, then I need to charge it once. BUT still just ONCE.) Plus, having some battery life-saver options integrated is a technological progress in my opinion. -Many apps work fast now. BUT Instagram is just bad programmed. It’s sad to see, how this app is „verschlimmbessert“ (=worsened) intentionally more and more in the last years. Guess who wastes less time on this app now? :) (still thanks programmers I guess?) Social media detox “tip”: If your app/phone is buggy and runs slow, you will naturally lose the desire to use it. *insert smart-thinking-guy meme* -The 120Hz refresh rate is noticeable and nice at times. But I usually keep it at 60hz, because I don’t need it anytime and want to save battery life on some days, plus, I can’t look at my S9 anymore without thinking “Since when do you lag this much?!” -The camera(s).

We used to spend Christmas at my uncle and aunt's house, and in recent years, the trend was that people would gift phones or computers to their loved ones—and I’d be the one expected to set them up on Christmas Day. At first, I didn’t mind. It was usually a quick task. But one year, my uncle asked me to move his entire desktop and office setup from one room to another, set up new cables, and update all his software and operating system. This annoyed me because while everyone else was enjoying Christmas, I was basically working. The next year, I decided to spend Christmas with my new girlfriend. We had just started dating, things were going well, and honestly, I didn’t want to be the free family IT guy again. At some point that day, I got a phone call from my cousin. He didn’t greet me or even wish me a Merry Christmas—just straight-up asked why I wasn’t at the family lunch. I told him I was spending the day with my girlfriend and wouldn’t be joining them this year. In an annoyed tone, he replied: “But we need you! I just bought two new PCs for my daughters and you have to set them up.” That really pissed me off, but I kept my cool. I just said, “Yeah… Merry Christmas to you too,” and hung up.
