I have a few Daiwa reels all are the MQ. My favorite spinning reels to date. BG MQ would get my vote.

Generally in casting reels I prefer Shimano, in spinning reels I prefer Daiwa and when buying... brands outside of the Shimano / Daiwa debate. So there are plenty ...

I bought my first Daiwa casting reel with "zero adjust" (the Tatula X). The spool wants to spin freely on its own when engaged, causing overruns. What I mean by this is, if I engage the reel and my lure is stationary on a hard surface, rather than doing nothing as a traditional reel would with a properly set spool tension, it will spin if not held with the thumb - even though the lure is not moving at all. It reminds me of what happens when people get a spinning reel with a back reeling switch and they don't understand why the reel is spinning and causing a mess because the switch is flipped on. Are the Daiwa zero adjust reels supposed to do this or is my factory setting incorrect (I guess you're supposed to never touch the tension knob on these as they're allegedly perfectly set in the factory)? Hey everyone, I’m wanting to disassemble some of my reels that are a few years old and give them a really nice clean and greasing. I’m kind of nervous to do it because I don’t want to take them apart and not be able to get them back together. Is it a fairly easy process I could do on my own or is it worth the money to just take them to someone and pay to have them done? Thanks for any advice! Also if there’s any good YouTube videos out there showing the process the correct way please recommend. The reel in question is the Daiwa SS Tournament 700, in production from '87-'22 relatively unchanged. Whether made in Japan or Thailand, they're very high quality. While they aren't as smooth as the latest and greatest, they will outlast them. Hey folks I do a lot of inshore saltwater fishing and I currently use a nasci 1000 which I love the feel of but sometimes when I take it out on my paddleboard I get nervous about ruining it in the saltwater cause it’s always getting splashed. Anyways I’ve been comparing some reels and I’m looking in the $200-250 range in the 2500 or 3000 size. I’m looking at the Daiwa tatula mq lt Daiwa bg mq Shimano stradic Quantum Cabo Penn spinfisher Shimano spheros sw Daiwa saltist back bay lt I was going to go for the Tatula but I heard some complaints about the longevity and line lay. Hello folks! I’d like to know if any has experience using spin reel set ups for yellowtail fishing. I’ve heard a 4000 reel can do the job but I doubt it. I have a Daiwa BGMQ 8000 reel with 40lb braid up to 300 yards on it. I like to use 20-30lb floor leaders. Thoughts on Spinners vs yellowtail? I notice on boats that everyone pretty much has the same conventional rod/ reel set up. I remember last year a dude was crushing it with a 10,000 spinner set up. That reel was grinding lol ☕️. I’m thinking about buying one of these spinning reels for my friend who’s just getting into fishing, mainly for largemouth bass Shimano Nasci FC Daiwa Legalis LT Daiwa Regal LT I need some advice to push me in the right direction. My main goal is to get him something that’s beginner friendly but still performs well. I’m mainly looking at casting distance, retrieve smoothness, drag performance, and overall ease of use. Right now I’m leaning toward the Daiwa Legalis LT or the Daiwa Regal LT, but I don’t really know the difference between them. I’ve heard the Regal is smoother because it has more bearings, but I’m not sure if the Legalis LT has more features. I also keep seeing the Shimano Nasci FC come up a lot, but it’s a little out of his budget, so that’s just something to think about. Got a new job and celebrating by getting a new reel. Primarily saltwater and will probably use it with a popping cork most of the time on a 7’ medium rod. Was looking at the ultegra, spheros, and Stradic in the 3000 size. Will likely fish the surf a lot with it. Bought a new 6’6” light rod that I’m trying to find a reel for. I remembered I have a 1000 size Exceler that has been collecting dust so I popped it on and instantly hated it. I’d consider a 2000-XH variant but it would only increase rotating resistance and more inertia because the handle is the same size as the 1000s. Long story short, I’m looking to get a new reel. I live in Missouri and fish a variety of species. Bass, panfish, crappie, trout… so a little bit of everything. I already have a lews speed spin crx 200 on a 6’6 medium power fast action rod. I also just got a 23 jdm daiwa Legalis 1000s that I’m putting on a 6”8 light power panfish elite. What should I get next? I’ll likely be ordering off digitaka (that where I just got the Legalis). I’ve been looking at vanfords, ultregras, maybe even a twin power. I’m looking at the jdm stuff and there’s just a ton off options. And of the two reels I asked about, I went with neither. A good friend of mine is a tatula enjoyer and I have known of this fact. Of course he suggested I get a tat. So that's what I went with... Daiwa tat 2500xg, paired with a St. Croix victory 7'1 medium fast, and spooled with Varivas 8 1 GOU. And man has this setup been awesome. Super lightweight. Super smooth. Cast's great. LOOKS great. I've been using it mainly to fish flukes and it has been stellar. So yeah, if you were on the fence about the Tat... Be on the fence no longer. Comparing mid and high end range products, I assume shimano should cast better due to better line lay, worm oscillation, and long spools. Or are they quite similar? I wonder how much distance difference there would be for casting metal lure as far as possible. Edit: I am talking about saltwater fishing with metal jigs where you cast up to 100 metres. I’m about to reel up my Daiwa Revros and I prefer braided line with a fluoro leader over just fluoro or mono (just my personal preference). Should I add fluoro or mono backing if using braid? every youtube vid I see says it makes it grip better and reducing slipping. Edit: I fish North American fresh water rivers and streams mostly for pan fish, bass, and occasional sauger. Unless I accidentally hook a carpet nothing is going to strip my spool. Heck, most of the time I can about hit the far shore with a cast. Edit end For instance, Daiwa Regal 2500 holds 240 yards of 8lb line. Why? I can't cast more than 50 yards when the wind is in my favor. If you double that for all the knots I mess up and give a safety factor for the off chance a larger fish wants to test the drag that'd be 100 yards of line. But that would leave the spool less than half full and anytime my spool gets half empty, it greatly impacts casting distance ( unless I'm running really light line like 4 lb). Now, I've got some older reels with plastic spools. So yeah, they are not as smooth casting as some of the modern metal polished spools, I will admit, but they all tend to cast better when they are filled to capacity and the line isn'trubbingagainstthe edge of the spool as much as it plays out. So, why the extra line capacity? It seems unnecessary. Edit: NGL, the title was a bit clickbait, I will say that the core argument is that I wouldn't pay the 58% premium the Fuego commands over the Regal, but if you find it on sale when the Regal is not on sale or if you like the color, why not! TL;DR at bottom: Between $69.99 - $109.99, Daiwa offers the following Spinning Reels: Regal - $69.99 (schematic here) Legalis - $79.99 (schematic here) Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Carbonlite 2 - $79.99 (schematic here) Exceler - $99.99 (schematic here) Fuego - $109.99 (schematic here) What is the difference between all these reels? I'm going to use the 2500 (2000 for the Johnnie Morris) as an example: Let's start with the body - All 5 reels on this list have Zaion-V bodies. This is the high carbon material in "carbonlite". The gearing is pretty identical in all 4 Daiwas, despite the fact that some of the these reel have "digigear" branding, and some of these reels have "tough digigear" branding. The branding itself doesn't even say anything TBH, in this day and age, which gears aren't digitally designed and machine cut? For the 4 Daiwas, the pinion gear is Q36-0301; The drive gear is Q36-0501, on the Regal and Legalis, Q36-0401 on the Fuego and Exceler - The two are pretty identical outside of accommodating for different handles. The oscillation gear is Q13-9001. Johnny Morris don't have parts numbers I can check, but come on, I'm willing to bet it is the same thing. Drag on these reels are also identical - The stack design is identical, and the ATD drag washer itself, J54-7001 is used on all the Daiwas. Johnny Morris has the exact same design, and considering that it rolls out of the same factory, I assume it has the exact same washers. Handle wise, the Regal and Legalis have the cheaper shaft through design, the Fuego, Exceler, and Johnny Morris have the screw in design. Bearing design is where it begins to get interesting - The Legalis and Exceler have 5+1, Fuego and Regal have 6+1, and Johnny Morris have 7+1. Here's where the bearings are placed on all 5: 1 Roller bearing for the clutch 2 bearings for the pinion gear (Shimano calls this X-ship) 2 bearings to support the handle and drive gear 1 bearing to support the oscillation gear In addition, the Fuego and Regal gets: 1 bearing to support the spool The Johnny Morris gets 1 more than that: 1 bearing in the handle assembly Note: contrary to popular belief, the Fuego doesn't get sealed or shielded bearings, the parts numbers are the same across all 4 Daiwas and I presume the Johnny Morris too. Additionally, the Legalis and Exceler gets air-bail, the other three have solid bails. Now the Johnny Morris has a bail that looks identical to the Legalis, which suggests to me that I donno, it might be air bail? I doubt Daiwa would make the same two bails that look identical to shave a few cents off in costs - The manufacturing complexity would override the cost savings. But, Bass Pro doesn't advertise the airbail, possibly because "air bail" is a Daiwa trademark. The Fuego is the only one of the bunch that gets "magseal", but only for the main shaft - no other part of the reel is sealed. But IMO, the magseal really doesn't do anything, it is purely a marketing gimmick for Daiwa. Like seriously, it doesn't make sense to seal the main shaft and ONLY the main shaft. I actually looked at some saltwater reels, and both the Daiwa BG and Penn Battle III don't have seals in that location. Also, there's literally an anti-reverse switch an inch away - if your reel is getting dunked or splashed, water is coming in through there.... Hell, Magseal is actually a detriment here. It increases servicing complexity significantly, and Daiwa does not officially sell magseal fluid (although it is commonly found on Ebay, perhaps from their employees selling it off). If you dunked your Fuego, the Magseal means you can't just go to any tackle store, grab a bottle of reel oil, clean the reel, and be back on the water the next day. You have to order the magseal oil off ebay and wait for it to get there before you can get it back together..... TL;DR Now let's put this all together: The Legalis is a Regal with 1 less bearing and airbail, costs an extra $10 The Exceler is a Legalis with a screw in handle, costs an extra $20 The Fuego is a Regal with magseal and screw in handle, costs an extra $40 The Johnny Morris is a Regal with 1 more bearing, screw in handle and maybe air bail, costs an extra $10. So like, if you want to save money, just buy the Regal - You get maybe an extra half gram in rotational weight with the solid bail (relative to the Legalis and Exceler) and maybe a few microns of extra play with the shaft through handle. The Fuego is perhaps the worst value here - A 58% price increase over the Regal for what, a screw in handle, and a seal of practically no value (possibly even negative value). Daiwa values the screw in handle at $20 (as seen in the Exceler - Legalis price gap), that means what, you paid $20 for that magseal? But to be honest with ya, this is honestly when you should buy the "house brand".
