DC Comics is being targeted by a new boycott campaign over Black-led superhero books
A group of content creators is coming together to call for a boycott of all DC Comics after what they feel is a dearth of Black-led comic books in the company's primary continuity. A new organization called the Black Comic Alliance, led by comics content creator James Portis III, is calling for all fans, readers, and creators "to withhold financial support as well as cease content creation for DC Comics publishing initiatives until meaningful structural changes are made regarding Black representation in their mainline continuity." This is the second stage of a planned #DCSoWhite project campaign that Portis has been pushing for in recent months to publicly force DC Comics to make changes using negative opinions about the company in social media (and media) coverage. The #DCBlackout boycott is called by the Black Comic Alliance to last until DC puts up for pre-order "a Black-led ongoing in mainline continuity" with retailers and that it has marketing efforts "on the levels that would show faith in the title and a desire for it to succeed." Earlier this month, as part of the #DCSoWhite campaign, Portis individually also called for these new Black-led DC ongoings to run for 18-24 months "so that fresh data can be gathered on their sales from multiple avenues like digital and collected editions, not just single issue preorders." DC & Marvel aren't doing long creator runs as much anymore because comic readers aren't supporting them as much anymore, says 15+ year comics veteran Scott Snyder
Here's something I don't have to tell you if you've been to a comic book store lately: DC and Marvel storylines are getting shorter. Arcs that used to fill multiple TPBs are now relegated to one or two (save for a couple of surefire head-liners), and as a result, fans get less time exploring what a certain situation can mean to their favorite characters. Now, we're not experts enough to know exactly why this is happening, but we do know someone who's a lot more embedded in the industry than we are, and he's got an opinion he'd like to share. According to Scott Snyder, longer runs don't happen at DC and Marvel because readers aren't buying them. Snyder voiced his thoughts over on his Best Jacket Press substack, where he was explaining what his day-to-day looked like as one of the advisors for DC's Next Level line. One of the things he keeps having to tell authors, Snyder says, is that "the ending needs to be stronger," a necessity brought about by readers investing less in longer stories. "I don’t know if it’s a byproduct of streaming or if it’s an era of comics that’s gone," Snyder explained, "Like eight or nine years ago, when there was really more of a predilection for these long, long runs where a story in a plot would go for a very, very long time. But the economics of comics right now, although a lot of things are overperforming and there’s a lot of new readership and a lot of excitement, really aren’t supporting very long, slow burn runs in any kind of profitable way." Still, Snyder's Best Jacket substack is often times addressed directly to aspiring comic creators, and he's quick to clarify - the current market shouldn't entirely dictate how they want to write comics. "It doesn’t mean that you can’t do a series that’s like, 20 or 30 issues that’s a slow burn," the Batman legend clarifies, "You absolutely should if that’s exactly what you want to do. And I love series like that. I’m just saying it’s a harder marketplace for series like that right now than it was eight or nine years ago." To Snyder's point, the fact that slower storylines are harder to market does not equate to them being impossible to market. Snyder's own Absolute Batman, for example, has been going for 20 issues as of this writing, and the author has claimed that "there are absolutely no plans of ending it" in October of last year. So perhaps the key to getting readers into longer storylines are spiky shoulder-pads and mutant villains? Somebody get the My Little Pony comics people on the line. submitted by /u/Popverse2022 to r/comicbooks [link] [comments]

<Hated Design> Darkseid's Clothes (DC Comics)
Now obviously Darkseid himself is an iconic and amazing design, I love the cracked skin and glowing eyes and the scary teeth, but he just has no drip. The helmet makes his head look like a thumb, the tank top doesn't cut off at the right place to make his arms look bigger, his skirt doesn't even fit, the gloves are genuinely just rubber kitchen gloves, like it does not work at all. The kinky boots I can kinda get behind but even then he's not doing anything to make them pop. Also, indigo is just not a good complement for his skin tone. There's no detail, there's no flair, there's no nothing. I get that sometimes you want simplicity, but this is too far. I also included two outfits that I do like for him. I think the movie fit is kinda nice: Silver is a better complement for his skin tone, the armor plating and Omega symbol make his musculature really stand out, and the helmet frames his face a lot better to make him look intimidating. Turning the gloves into gauntlets is really nice too. If it had maybe one more thing going on and a bit more color, it'd be really awesome... like the cloak design, which I think is the best one here. The Omega symbol now in red, the asymmetry of the big weapon hand, the detail lines on the suit, the tatters on the cape to make his silhouette more jagged and imposing, it all really works. It's still mostly in indigo -- bitch has a favorite color and he wants you to know about it -- but it's a lot better-looking than his usual deal. I think the ideal Darkseid outfit for me would be the movie's silver armor and bracers with the red highlights and cape of the last image. He can even keep his kinky boots, as long as he puts a bit of red on the kneecaps. Silver and indigo with red highlights, now doesn't that sound like a killer color scheme? I think an outfit like that would sell "godlike apocalyptic embodiment of evil" a hell of a lot better than his current clothes, which mostly say "combination janitor and cheap stripper". EDIT: The comments have made me realize an even better idea. You guys are right, he doesn't need armor. He should drop it ALL and kick ass in nothing but the miniskirt, with maybe a belt and some bracers. Strip off the loser tank top and show us those pecs! submitted by /u/Dragons_Exist to r/TopCharacterDesigns [link] [comments]

I won't capitulate to fascists, so with the Paramount buyout happening, I have to say goodbye to DC Comics. I had to do the same with Marvel when Disney bought them.
