Heyyy! high-ish maintenance girlie here wanting to show off my progress of optimizing my liquids and toiletries. One of my main onebag goals has been to be able to bring tiny amounts of my whole routine. Some parts of my routine are fully optimized, while some parts still need some work! I'm also currently doing a liquids trial with some of my products. I'm living out of my liquids bag (just for the products I can refill) and keeping tally of how many times I can use each product. I'm going on an 11 day trip soon so I need data!! Looking for answers that are less general and more scientific and specific, if possible! As I understand it, dermaplaning is using a sharp, scalpel-like blade to take off the vellum hair (or peach fuzz) from the surface of the skin. Seems harmless, however, I've read many account of dermaplaning "wrecking" peoples skin, causing redness and stinging. This leads me to believe that there's something about the blade, angle used, pressure applied, or some combination of these that causes too much of the epidermis to be removed in the process. I've never had this done professionally or read a detailed description on how to do it professionally. Why is this happening to so many who try it (both professionally and at home)? Is there a way to do it that doesn't harm the skin barrier? If it's risky, why aren't people just shaving? Would a trust new Venus razor do the trick? I (male) have been shaving my own face with a straight razor for a long time, and it was the single biggest and change I've ever had for my own face's improvement. My shaving irritation, ingrown hairs, and acne problems went away not long after switching and getting good with it. For a long while, I thought it was just more efficient and less irritating to use one really sharp blade that's regularly honed than to use the cheap multiblade cartridges / disposables. However now that I've been in esthetics for a bit, and have performed quite a few dermaplanes on women, I understand exfoliation is also a big part of it. That has me wondering if there have been any studies done on looking at the real world differences between the two. I've searched around for it, but all I've found are people just asserting dermaplane is different from shaving without any real citation of research. Does anyone know of anything a little more concrete? The few differences I can find that have high quality behind them: 1) Straight razor shaving your own face you go with the grain of the terminal hair, dermaplaning done by a professional will go against the grain of vellus hair (both as a rule of thumb, some exceptions happen as you sometimes have to go in whatever direction will work for a particular area.) 2) Dermaplaning goes over almost all of the face, shaving will just be over neck, chin, cheeks, lips. Although since learning dermaplaning I have considered doing more of my face just to see how much stuff I'll get off. 3) Shaving, when done right, will use a pre-shave oil, followed up by a cream or shaving soap that is then shaved over. Dermaplaning will be either raw dry skin, or oil, I've seen both. 4) Medical scalpels (for proper dermaplane comparison,) are indeed incredibly sharp, however medical scalpels are not designed for prolong sharpness. Most surgeons will use a scalpel for a few cuts, but as soon as any degradation in the cutting edge happens, they just get a new one. There's little point in saving pennies when the insurance company is footing the bill. I've noticed this myself, and will start a dermaplane on the most difficult areas as the blade is sharp, and will move on to the easier and less sensitive areas of the face as the blade dulls. A straight razor CAN be sharper than a medical scalpel, but they are made to keep the edge for longer, and often you'll wind up with one less sharp, not to mention there is a wider range of quality, especially if you get into disposable shavette blades. There is also a potential difference with single bevel vs dual bevel blades, though I've only ever used dual bevels (single bevel seems to be more common in Asian blades.) I don't really know exactly what my question is, other than what high quality information is available to compare the two modalities? Is a straight razor shave going to get as much exfoliation? I've never compared the angle of attack of the two since I've only done razor to my own terminal hair and dermaplane to women with vellus hair, but does the angle make a big difference? Would a straight razor be effective exfoliation to the forehead? Does it ever make sense to recommend dermaplane to men if they would otherwise get the benefits from shaving with a straight razor? Should women who DIY at home just buy a straight razor instead of the cheap ass low quality razors or spend a bunch on disposable scalpels? Please I need help and advice on how to prevent those razor bumps after dermaplaning. It makes my skin textured and it's on the sides of my jaw. I have sensitive skin and I use only new razors for my face then throw it away. Clean face, clean hands. I use aloe Vera gel while shaving, wash my face again after shaving, use calming face mask right after and aloe vera gel after it. Maybe I have a bad technique on how I'm holding the razor and shave in this area but not sure. Or do you put the razor in alcohol even if it's new? This I don't do. Not sure what exactly causes it. Feel free to share your lazy girl habits! When I’m lazy I’ll just rub my brushes with a make up wipe and or micellar water and wash cloth to post pone washing my brushes a few days. I’ll use a dermaplan razor for my brow tails instead of plucking them I use my electric foot file every other time I shower instead of every time if I’m feeling lazy. (Follow up with vaelsine and the perfume I’m wearing and oooof softest beautiful smelling feet ever!!) I track my hair washing schedule with “hair track” so if I don’t feel like washing my hair I’ll check my app to see when I washed it (I have serb dermatitis on my scalp and my derm wants me wash every other day). I alternate what I shampoo I use. I alternate between a salicylic acid, ketoconazole shampoo, tea tree, moisturizing shampoo and a clarifying shampoo. The salicylic acid and ketoconazole need to be left on a minimum of 5 minutes and if I double cleanse it sucks. But I had a thinning spot and following my methods I’ve grown hair back! I also use glycolic Acid on my scalp toooo I’ll update with the more lazy things I do lmao. It’s like a sleep over where we can share :) Edit: I want to add some more things I do lmao. My hair on my thighs are non existent and I shave my legs on Friday so if in a pinch I’ll shave just the bottom half shin area or the lil bit that shows out of my pants. I keep seeing ads about women using these little face razors and shaving their cheeks and upper lip. And I want to try it because I like wearing makeup but foundation with more than average peach fuzz looks weird on me. But I’m scared that I will do it and then it’ll be like when I switched to shaving my chin…all of a sudden it was growing faster and then it’s prickly. I do not want prickles of hair all over my face. I’ve been shaving since I was 25ish, used cream removers for 8 years prior to that.
