New junior DevOps engineer - the best way to succeed
Hi guys, I started to work as a junior DevOps engineer 9 days ago, before that I finished colleague and worked 1 year as a System administrator T1. Now, I have my own dedicated mentor/buddy and first few days were like really awesome, he wanted to help with information and everything but in the last few days it's like some really weird feedback with some blaming vibe of how I don't know something - and I'm not asking silly things, like before running any plan or apply script in our CI/CD pipeline - because I don't want to destroy anything and similar situations, now, he already told that to our team lead which makes me a bit worried/scared on how to proceed, because I do believe it's a smart thing to not be a hero, but on the other hand, if questions in first few weeks-even months would be considered "how come you don't know that" for a person that never worked on this position and reported to TL I'm really confused on what to ask and approach. Also, documentation almost don't exist, as seniors were leaving the company documentation wasn't built and now too many of them left and few that are here are not having time to do it because of their work which I can understand. One feedback that I also got was that why I don't ask questions on daily meetings when he is explaining something - well how should I ask if even in dm he seems to be a bit unwilling to help. My bf is telling me that situations like this never got any better for him in the past so he is saying that I should already chasing another opportunity while working on this passive. I don't know, I don't like quitting at all, and it's really a great opportunity, but I never had situation like this. And yeah, colleague, courses, certs and even my own projects are basically just a scratch when you come into production, like the only thing is helping me are some commands around terminal haha. submitted by /u/Embarrassed_Cut_4955 to r/devops [link] [comments]

Do DevOps engineers actually memorize YAML?
I’m currently learning DevOps and going through tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible and Terraform one thing I keep noticing is that a lot of configs are written in YAML (k8s manifests, Ansible playbooks, CI pipelines, etc) some of these files can get pretty long so I’m wondering how this works in real jobs do DevOps engineers actually memorize these YAML structures or is it normal to check documentation and copy/modify examples? Also curious how this works in interviews do they expect you to write YAML from memory, or is it okay to refer to docs? Just trying to understand what the real workflow is like submitted by /u/Melodic_Struggle_95 to r/devops [link] [comments]

Is DevOps engineering a solid career choice for starting in 2026?
Hi everyone, I am planning to become an IT specialist and I'm currently looking into different directions. I've chosen DevOps engineering as my primary interest. Given the current industry trends leading into 2026, do you think this is a great choice for a beginner? What are the most important skills I should focus on right now to stay relevant? I would appreciate any advice on the market state and potential growth. Thanks! submitted by /u/hatetape to r/learnprogramming [link] [comments]

The market is weird right now for DevOps engineer salary
Anyone else noticing how weird DevOps compensation data looks lately? Glassdoor and Levels.fyi seem a step behind reality. Some teams are downsizing core DevOps roles, while others are paying a premium for FinOps, GenAI ops, and cloud cost optimization skills. For anyone comparing against published numbers, this DevOps engineer salary breakdown gives a useful baseline, but I’m curious how closely it matches what people are seeing right now: DevOps Engineer Salary Let’s sanity-check the market together. submitted by /u/IT_Certguru to r/devops [link] [comments]

We struggle to hire decent DevOps engineers
Idk if this is as widespread but I work for fairly large org and we struggle to hire competent engineers. Our pay (EU) is not a match to US colleagues but still fair around 110-115k EUR base and for that I'd expect some decent candidates. Out of 100+ candidates you can throw to the bin 80 easily.. you get all sort of random candidates, marketing folks, hr, fresh grads, bootcamp folks all applying to a Senior DevOps role. Remaining 10-15 .. those will look like Principal engineers on resume but will fold on first question like "can you explain what is systemd and when you'd use it". We really end up with 3-4 decent candidates eventually. Usually those guys already work somewhere asking above our budget and Rightfully so.. and already have multiple offers/options. So I don't get all this market is bad thing. submitted by /u/Dubinko to r/platformengineering [link] [comments]

what does a DevOps engineer actually do day-to-day?
Hi everyone, I’m currently getting into DevOps and had a few beginner questions that I’ve been thinking about. From a real-world perspective, what does a DevOps engineer usually do on a daily basis? Do you mostly write scripts and automation, or do you also write application code? Another thing I’m curious about is command usage. As a beginner, it feels overwhelming to remember so many commands and configurations. In real jobs, do engineers memorize most commands, or is it normal to rely on documentation, notes, and previously written scripts? Also, how different is interview expectation compared to actual on-the-job work? I’m asking this genuinely to understand what I should focus on while learning. submitted by /u/Melodic_Struggle_95 to r/devops [link] [comments]

Interviewer asked if I would physically drive to the DevOps engineer's house because he wasn't answering Slack.
Once I had an interview that started normal but turned into a weird psychological stress test. We got to the "hypothetical scenario" part. The interviewer sets the scene: It's late evening, I've finished my tasks, but suddenly Prod goes down. Clients are losing money. I gave the standard answers: Check logs. Rollback the commit. Redeploy. The interviewer keeps pushing: "Okay, you rolled back, but the infrastructure is still down. It's not the code, it's the infra. You don't have access. You need the DevOps guy." Me: "Okay, I ping the DevOps." Interviewer: "He's offline. Not answering Slack." Me: "I call him." Interviewer: "He’s not picking up. Client is screaming. Money is burning. What do you do?" I explained that if I don't have access to the infra and the key person is missing, there's a limit to what I can do without breaking things further. Then he drops the bomb: "Let's say you know where the DevOps guy lives. Would you go to his house?" I literally paused and said: "No, I wouldn't go. If he isn't answering calls or Slack, I am clearly an unwanted guest at his home." The interviewer admitted it was a "fictional situation with no right answer," but honestly, who thinks stalking a coworker is a valid troubleshooting step? Is this what "proactive" looks like now? submitted by /u/Ok_Researcher_6962 to r/recruitinghell [link] [comments]

DevOps engineers: What Bash skills do you actually use in production that aren't taught in most courses?
I'm a DevOps Team Lead managing Kubernetes/AWS infrastructure at an FDA-compliant medical device company. My colleague works at Proofpoint doing security automation. We've both noticed that most Bash courses teach toy examples, but production Bash is different. We're curious what real-world skills you wish you'd learned earlier: Are you parsing CloudWatch/Splunk logs? Automating CI/CD pipelines? Handling secrets management in scripts? Debugging production incidents with Bash one-liners? Something else entirely? What Bash skills have been most valuable in your DevOps career that you had to learn the hard way? submitted by /u/Dense_Bad_8897 to r/devops [link] [comments]

Planning to Become a DevOps Engineer in 2025? Here’s What Actually Matters
I see a lot of people jumping straight into Docker and Kubernetes and then wondering why they feel lost. DevOps isn’t just “learn these 5 tools” it’s a mix of mindset, fundamentals, and the right tools at the right time. Here’s a breakdown of how I’d start if I was new in 2025. Learn the Fundamentals First Before you even touch fancy automation tools, make sure you actually understand the stuff you’ll be automating. That means: Linux basics (file system, processes, permissions, services) Networking (IP, DNS, HTTP/S, ports, routing, NAT, firewalls) System administration (users, groups, package management, logs) Bash scripting for automating simple tasks Basic Python scripting (log parsing, API calls, automation scripts) If you can’t explain what happens when you curl a URL or why a service isn’t starting, you’ll struggle later. Version Control and CI/CD Are Core Skills Every DevOps pipeline starts with Git. Learn branching, merging, pull requests, and resolving conflicts. Then move into CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment). Popular tools: Jenkins GitLab CI GitHub Actions CircleCI You don’t just need to “click a deploy button” — understand pipeline stages, automated testing, build artifacts, and how to roll back if something breaks. Containers and Orchestration Containers are a big part of DevOps. Start with Docker: Build images with Dockerfiles Use volumes and networks Work with multi-container apps via Docker Compose Once you’re solid there, learn Kubernetes (K8s). Don’t rush this — it’s a lot. Focus on: Pods, deployments, services ConfigMaps and secrets Scaling and rolling updates Ingress and service discovery You’ll also want to understand managed K8s services like AWS EKS, Azure AKS, or GCP GKE. Cloud Skills Are Non-Negotiable Pick one cloud provider to start: AWS, Azure, or GCP. AWS is the most common, but it’s fine to choose based on job market in your area. Learn: Compute (EC2) Networking (VPC, subnets, security groups) Storage (S3, EBS) IAM (roles, policies, least privilege) Then, learn how to deploy containers or Kubernetes clusters in the cloud. Infrastructure as Code (IaC) This is how you make cloud resources repeatable and version-controlled. Terraform is the most popular and works with all major clouds. Learn how to: Define infrastructure in .tf files Use variables and modules Apply and destroy infrastructure safely Store state securely Monitoring, Logging, and Alerting If you build and deploy something but can’t see when it’s failing, you’re not doing DevOps. Get hands-on with: Prometheus + Grafana for metrics ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) for logging Cloud-native tools like AWS CloudWatch or GCP Stackdriver Security (DevSecOps Basics) Security is now a core part of DevOps, not an afterthought. Learn to: Scan code for vulnerabilities (Snyk, Trivy) Manage secrets (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager) Secure Docker images Apply IAM best practices Build Real Projects Don’t just follow tutorials. Build something end-to-end, like: A microservice app with Docker CI/CD pipeline → Docker → Kubernetes → Cloud deployment Terraform for infra provisioning Monitoring + logging setup Push everything to GitHub with a README that explains your setup. Network With the Community Join DevOps communities: Reddit (r/devops, r/kubernetes, r/aws) CNCF Slack channels DevOps Discord servers Local meetups or conferences Ask questions, share your progress, and help others. Stay Consistent & Keep Learning DevOps tools evolve fast. Even once you land a job, you’ll keep learning. Read blogs, watch KubeCon talks, experiment in your home lab. If you start from zero and commit a few hours per week, you could be job-ready in 6–8 months. The key is not to try and master everything at once — build layer by layer, and make sure each new tool you learn connects to something you already understand. If you want a well-structured course & resource suggestions to follow this roadmap step-by-step, DM me and I’ll share what worked for me and others breaking into DevOps. submitted by /u/Intellipaat_Team to r/devops [link] [comments]

Is DevOps still a good career path in 2025 for a new computer engineering graduate?
Hi everyone, I’m about to graduate with a degree in computer engineering, and I’m exploring different career paths in tech. I know that some fields are more affected by AI than others in terms of job demand and salary. I’m curious about DevOps in particular. • Is DevOps still a good field to get into in 2025? • Has it been significantly affected by AI? • Would you recommend going into DevOps as a new graduate? • Does it still offer good job opportunities and salaries compared to other fields? I’d really appreciate any advice or insight. submitted by /u/Top-Possession-5368 to r/devops [link] [comments]

im finally a DevOps Engineer
5 years ago I had zero college, zero experience, no certifications, and no marketable skills coming out of the army. i set the goal for myself to become a DevOps engineer and today I did it. got into IT with zero experience and one certification in 2020 when i got out of the army infantry. first job was help desk, then sysadmin, then a couple tier 2/3 remote support positions including as a RHCSA at red hat. then i got a sysadmin position for my current company in August of 2023. i worked my ass off. i have built full terraform/Terragrunt modules, deployment pipelines, and incident response tools for our clients, who are some of the biggest tech organizations in the world. google, zoom, red hat, Microsoft, etc... I do this across multiple cloud providers based on client needs. it's actually kind of shocking the amount of work we do at the level we do given the size of our team. I'm the only systems person and I get to touch infrastructure for large organizations on a regular basis. today i got the email that i have officially been promoted to DevOps engineer. im really proud of myself. I barely graduated high school because of my ADHD. I did well in the army but the violent environment was not good for my soul. college is very uncomfortable for me. I wasn't sure if I'd ever make a good living, let alone doing smart people stuff. when I was getting into IT I looked for the most lucrative positions. then looked for the one that I thought seemed the most interesting and that was DevOps. now im a DevOps engineer. I'm really proud of myself. submitted by /u/Broad-Comparison-801 to r/devops [link] [comments]

DevOps Engineers reputation is sinking..
Ain't gatekeeping but, It used to be that if you were really talented and experienced Sys Admin with SWE knowledge or vise versa you'd be a good fit for DevOps. As a matter of fact Google first SRE team was composed of their top 1% SWE's. Nowadays if you can't code and did some udemy courses on AWS you are marketed a DevOps engineer and all this BS is actively promoted by DevOps engineering channels. I'm in no shape or form a fu##ing genius - just your typical Devops, but even I was like WOW when just few days ago my colleague confessed that the reason he chose DevOps is because its easy and he can't learn any coding for SWE, or deep linux for System Engineer... sigh submitted by /u/Dubinko to r/devops [link] [comments]
