So, I bought this house that was ‘in need of updating and modernisation’. It was overlooked for months, according to the agents because people couldn’t see beyond the current decor. Thankfully, the house had a beautiful sea view, so, for a significantly reduced price I snapped it up and thought I’d worry about the rest later…. I absolutely detested the small dark kitchen, I’m often told I bite off more than I can chew, this was one of those occasions, and chew away I did. They said it’d be too much work, it couldn’t be done, but I had a vision, and come hell or high water I would have a nice kitchen. I decided to swap the rooms around by bringing the kitchen into the existing dining room, knocking the chimney breast out to accommodate an eBay find oven that I was determined would fit because it was a bargain, creating a central island to house the sink and dishwasher and making the existing kitchen a utility type room for washer, dryer, fridge etc. What followed was a lot of blood, sweat, tears, swearing, roping my girlfriends and my 65 year old mum in to dismantle flooring, walls and tiles by using a lure of wine and takeaways. 10 weeks of washing up in the upstairs bath (which was hell on earth), dealing with a new pup mid project (definitely bit off some more to chew), and helping the poor driver they sent alone with said bargain eBay range cooker, lift it up a flight of stairs and over my neighbours wall to get it into my house at 7am on a Sunday morning 😏 But we got there!! I now own enough power and hand tools to give B&Q a run for their money and a lot more knowledge when it comes to ‘DIY’ thanks to YouTube and forums like these here on Reddit. I bought this house several years ago and the paint and mounding was as it is in the photos. At first I didn’t care for it but decided to lean into it. But I also think that it’s probably terribly out of style and I am embarrassed to invite people over, especially anyone under the age of 40, since I suspect they’d think it looks like an old person’s place. Does it look awful and suffocating? Would young women walk away and go “yech!” If I host anyone? At least one person my age told me it wasn’t pleasing. I am particularly self-conscious about how I arrange decorative items. My husband and I aren’t the types to use a formal dining room, so we turned it into a library. I can’t wait until I actually have all the shelves filled with books as I hate decorating. Here’s a brief process overview. 1) The entire idea was inspired by the rug 2) Closed off large doorway between room and entryway (there is another large doorway from the living room). We didn’t have enough depth between the only uninterrupted wall and the window to build the shelves so this is what we decided to do. 3) Installed premade kitchen uppers as shelf base 4) Bought premade butcher block counter top and added stain/sealant. Installed on top of cabinets 5) Built shelves out of 0.75” sanded plywood. Each shelf secured by wood glue and screws to the vertical pieces of plywood. All 3 shelf sections are secured together. The outside vertical pieces of the shelves are secured to the studs in the walls they are up against. A small 0.5” wooden rod was added under each shelf as added support, and these rods are also secured to the studs. There is wooden framing above the shelves that is secured to studs, and the top of the shelves are secured to this. I think our shelves are a little wider than they are supposed to be, but I haven’t noticed any shelf sagging. 6) Caulked the hell out of every little crevice, primed every surface, two coats of paint. Added trim to the unfinished edges. We could have done a better job with the trim but oh well. 7) Added some privacy film to the windows Some lessons learned: - never assume a wall is truly square - the floor being slightly off level makes a big difference across the length of the room. We should have made the framing that our cabinets were placed on truly level, but thought it wouldn’t make a big difference. We wound up having to add about 0.5” of shims under the outermost side of the right shelf unit to make the shelves level. - painting cabinet doors sucks ass, and super smooth manufactured finished doors even more so.
