This massive canvas has been living on my dining table for weeks because I just moved and don’t have a better set up yet. So yeah. Coconut-based yogurt with a banana and dark chocolate, eaten directly on top of the painting. Got the cancellation this morning, mid-highlights, and just kind of… kept painting. I figure the upside is that I now get to make some footage for my socials, since the buyer wanted to keep this work private. This isn’t my first cancellation and it won’t be my last, but something about this one stings in a specific way I haven’t fully processed yet. Maybe because it’s the largest thing I’ve made in a while and I was really counting on the income. Maybe because the dogs are beautiful and I’ve spent weeks learning their faces. Anyway. The painting still exists. That’s the strange thing about making physical objects: they don’t care about intent or that they’ll never get to exist in the same room as the creatures they were based on. I work at a restaurant in Florida that’s relatively new at a member’s only golf resort. While the upper company executives were thinking of how service would look, one of the higher executives proposed table side martinis for every martini that’s just your basic vodka/gin plus vermouth (or no vermouth) martini. We’ve been open for about a year and we haven’t implemented it yet, much to his annoyance. He visits every couple weeks, and because the application of it is just so time consuming and lacks monetary incentive for servers to want to provide it (it’s like a 2 dollar up charge), we havent committed fully to it. Basically, whenever the guest orders a vodka or gin martini, we’re supposed to let the bartender (who already could be swamped with other things) fill up separate little containers for the spirit and the ice needed to shake it, and leave it on the service well for us to take and put on this big, cumbersome (yet beautiful, I admit) bar cart that we have to then stop whatever we’re doing in our own flow and slowly and awkwardly wheel it out to their table. Then we put the ice in the shaker, add olive juice or vermouth if they want, and shake in front of their table. If other people have ordered drinks that aren’t martinis - sorry pal, you’re outta luck, cuz I’ve had to take an extra few minutes to set up this freakin cart and make a show of shaking your liquor in front of you before I have an opportunity to check whether the bartender has made and dropped my drinks off at the service well — which they might even be dying at that moment. So even if it’s one person out of 8 that wants a martini, they have to wait while that one person gets singled out for an experience they didn’t ask for, for a drink that took way longer than necessary, just because some exec wants to feel validated for being part of the creative process by having us include his idea in his idea of a fine-dining experience. I love the attitude and passion for it — but the proposed implementation has so many holes that he doesn’t see because I don’t think he’s never managed a restaurant before, and he’s never there during our service anyway for longer than an hour (usually to dine) to see the natural rhythm of everything. I need your help with either: a) coming up with ideas for what to say to the upper execs in order for them to feel like we’re in a really rough position right now to commit to this — and the only people who would be benefitting is the odd guest who says “oh wow, neat!”, while everyone else (guests and service workers) suffer cuz it’s “mr. Executive’s baby” (let alone the fact that it’s just tacky the way we’re supposed to do it, in my opinion) Or b) helping me put some sort of plan together to make it as easy as possible to implement that would please both him and our servers/guests. A little extra info: I’ve already proposed the idea that we make it its own item on the menu, like “tableside martini service” that has a very specific price attached to it and would entice us to want to offer it as part of an upsell (while we’re slow, of course). We tried that for like a week but he didn’t let us know that it was now on our menus so by the end of the week when no one had still ordered a tableside martini, it just looked like we weren’t offering it. So now he’s decided to make us do them that way for ALL vodka/gin martinis — without upcharging. I can’t tell you how much I hate this idea. Plz help. I think it’s even more beautiful than I had imagined after seeing it in my dining room. The only listing for the chairs I could find online was a set of 6 selling for $4.8k. We got 8, and I like the orange upholstery of ours much better than the ones listed online. And the table seems to be listed for upwards of $3k online without the custom glass top we got with our set. Altogether I paid $3k and that feels very reasonable to me. In May I bought a ps5, started GT7 on controller. Few weeks later got a cockpit and wheel setup in the middle of my living room. Here we are in June and I sold my dining table and got an g9 ultra wide on offer up for $500, bought stand, moved my desktop pc out of my room into here and I just can’t stop now. I really really want more upgrades already, next is pedals. I’m gonna chill for a little. Going to decorate this little area maybe a shelf w some small race cars & semi trucks because I drive for a living. Few little art pieces. Definitely definitely wish I just spent a little more on a better cockpit from the get go, but didn’t know I was gonna fully commit like this Ps. My Name is Gina, 55 F from upstate New York, and I run a family owned pizzeria. My husband and I have been in the service industry for decades and over the past few years, We've noticed a huge increase in rude customers, rude children and a crazy level of entitlement. One of the rules we have in our restaurant is that nobody is allowed to talk on speaker phone, play music out loud or have anything playing on speaker from a personal device. This is such a simple request and something that has always been the standard. This was not even an issue or something that needed to be said before the pandemic. But now it seems parents feel attacked if their children cannot watch Bluey on volume. We have signs up asking people not to do this and we actually do enforce this rule (politely but firmly) A few weeks ago, a woman was sitting with her 9 year old son who was watching cartoons on his tablet at full volume, while also scrolling tiktok on a phone. I nicely explained to the woman that we do not allow this, as it is disruptive to other customers and asked her to please turn off the volume. The woman rudely replied that her son has both ADHD and autism so he needs to do this in order to sit down without making a fuss. I asked if she could please use headphones and she snapped that her son does not like to use them. I told her that this is not acceptable and to please either use headphones or set his devices to silent. About 10 minutes later, I was in the kitchen and heard loud banging noises coming from the dining room. I came out to find the child furiously banging his fists on the table while the mom just sat there ignoring it. It was almost as if he was waiting for her to say something but she did nothing. I asked her to please stop him and she replied that he is on the spectrum and this is just his "normal behavior" if he doesn't have a device to calm him down. The boy then stood up and started running around my restaurant, punching and kicking the other tables and chairs, and knocking things over. Another customer yelled at the mom to "CONTROL YOUR KID OR I WILL!" She launched into a what sounded like a pre rehearsed monologue about how autistic children deserve to occupy the same spaces as everyone else. I agree with this, but everyone still needs to behave appropriately. I told the woman that if she could not get her son's behavior under control that she needs to leave. She was furious and stared yelling about how it is illegal to discriminate against people who are on the spectrum and that she would report me. My husband came out, put her food into a togo box and just said to her "get out right now!" She looked genuinely shocked and said that kids should not be expected to just sit quietly and that the world needs to be more accepting of those who are different. I love kids, my husband and I raised 5 of them, even one with special needs. But autism or not, nothing gives you the right to behave this way in any setting. If your child's issues are so severe that simply sitting in a restaurant without a device makes them freak out and throw a tantrum, then maybe reconsider taking them there in the first place. I'm tired of rude kids and lazy parents who embolden them to behave this way, refusing to discipline them or set any kind of rules or boundaries. This is not about ADHD, autism, or any other condition. This is about entitlement, bad parenting and bad behavior as a result. I built one of Jory Brighams Hank chairs with the plans from the Wood Whisperer and my wife loved the design but wanted it narrower are less like a lounge chair for the table. So I thinned the dimensions and made a set of three. All were made with number two common black walnut and classic tobacco leather for the seats.
